The Dawnay Arms in Hambleton

We called in here (family of 4, 2 adults and 2 kids) for a bite to eat on a Sunday. Ordered 4 x drinks, 2 of which were undrinkable. Bar staff changed them and again, these were undrinkable. They then changed them for a third time but there was no difference so out of frustration we just said they'd do. Then made a food order, 2 kids meals, a roast dinner with lamb and a burger meal. The lamb was so chewy and just seemed like cheap cuts and most of it was left, and then the burger came, and even though we asked if there was onions on the burger (as the menu didn't say..) and we were told no, the burger came with loads of onions all over it. This totally ruined the taste of the burger (it's a good job that we were not allergic otherwise they'd have had a problem on their hands). The staff did offer to change the burger but we were pushed for time and after the drinks palaver we just decided to remove the onions as best we could and make the best of it.

Great Pub. But not lively. Unless you go for one of the fantastic pub quizzes. Then you'll struggle to find a seat!

A wonderful inn, with wonderful food, great host and a fantastic atmosphere. All at a reasonable price. Who could. ask for more. I would recommend it to anyone. Steaks cooked to perfection as requested.

Great food at a good price, warm atmosphere and friendly staff. Zach the bar manager made us feel very welcome, would recommend and will be returning.

Came in for a meal at late notice and managed to get fitted in. Had the steak and ale pie and a french burger and both were lovely. Reasonable prices, good drinks selection and good service

Wonderful Atmosphere and even better customer service from the landlord. And fast sufficient service from I think his name was zac behind the bar.

Had a lively meal here on Wed evening. Delicious food. Great service. And a great night at the fun pub quiz afterwards made a very special evening.

We’ve eaten here many times and always really enjoyed the experience but yesterdays’s Sunday lunch was rather disappointing. A lovely dining room with friendly, efficient service but the quality of the meal was not up to the standard expected. The roast beef was tasty but with a lot of inedible fat and gristle and the roast potatoes were soggy rather than crisp. Not a great meal!

We went tonight for dinner, food, service and atmosphere excellent, landlady very accomodating as we're bar staff. Food was freshly cooked and very enjoyable. Would thoroughly recommend f you are close to the area.thank you

We fell on the Dawney Arms by accident but we were so glad we did. The food was amazing. The member of staff who served us was faultless, really accommodating, efficient, helpful and friendly. The landlady, who is also the chef came to our table to make sure we were happy with the food. Really must say that this was one of the best pub meals we’ve had in a very long time and would highly recommend checking this little gem out. Wonderful 👍

Popped in for a meal when passing. A warm and friendly welcome by staff and locals. A good selection of drinks and food on the menu to cater for all tastes. Quality, quantity and value of our meals were outstanding. All appearing to be homemade, fresh and served piping hot. Will definitely call in again if we are passing by !

I would say this is without a doubt the best pub for food, service and atmosphere I've ever had the fortunate luck to have discovered. The landlady is the chef and she's so good that she introduced herself and personally came out to make sure we were satisfied with our food which of course was possibly the best quality and home made available and the portion sizes are very generous but isn't reflected in the price. Exceptional value for money. We would dedicatedly call in again next time we visit York.

Was staying in nearby cottage for 2 nights attending a wedding at nearby Woodstock , so planned to eat here on the first night ! Great choice ! The staff really pleasant and attentive! The food was very impressive and tasty ! Be sure to stop on your travels through here you won’t be disappointed!

Sunday lunch stop while visiting family. Absolutely delicious. Plentiful, tasty and served by lovely friendly staff. The landlady is welcoming and lovely. Great outdoor space too if you fancy drinking or dining alfresco! A little gem you must try if in the area. Shame we love so far away.

Visiting family in York and so checked the reviews of local pubs for Sunday lunch. This little gem did not disappoint. Lovely pub, great food, lovely staff and excellent service. Sunday lunch was delicious. Piping hot, tasty, plentiful. The menu was extensive and well priced. Huge car park at the rear accessed via a side road and lovely outdoor space if you want to drink or dine alfresco! Wish we lived closer. Thank you for a lovely experience.

Nice village pub, good range of drinks and friendly staff. Pity it doesn't open Mondays or Tuesdays as I was only able to make a short visit on Sunday afternoon.

friendly welcoming hosts that made my brief visit very enjoyable, the beer battered Haddock was excellent, best fish and chips I've had in ages, wished I lived closer.

This pub came highly recommended and it didn’t disappoint. Visited in January with my family and we all enjoyed the delicious home made burgers served with home made chips, onion rings and coleslaw. The best we’ve had in any pub and we’ve visited a lot over the years! We loved it so much we visited again in March for Mother’s Day. We were told that the burgers were not on the menu that day due to it being a special set menu. Feeling very disappointed, I asked the owner, Vick if we could request the burgers as we had been looking forward to sampling them again. She agreed and went above and beyond to cook them for us again. They tasted just as good as the first time! All the staff are friendly and courteous and nothing is too much trouble. Thank you for accommodating us and we’ll definitely be back soon!

What an amazing pub, we were there for Irish Night when the Irish band Parceol were playing, great atmosphere and the staff are amazing….and the food…wowee, we ordered 2 platters, one seafood and one ploughmans , very good indeed and high quality. Passed this pub hundreds of times but it was our first visit….and it certainly won’t be the last, our two little dogs Pixie and Minnie enjoyed it. The perfect place at the right time. All of our party were warmly welcomed. All staff were friendly and welcoming. Nothing was ever too much trouble. The food was well cooked and plentiful. Everyone of us enjoyed what we ate. Not one complaint. Would highly recommend a visit whether it be just for a drink or a meal. We will return a soon as we can. Great pub/restaurant.

Probably the best combination of good food and good customer service we have had for a while. We came as a family of 4 with 2 young children and they could not do enough for us. Would recommend to anyone.

Another delicious Sunday lunch. I am Coeliac and require gluten free and it’s so nice to be able to have everything on the Sunday lunch. Lovely warm atmosphere. Landlady Victoria is lovely, so friendly, helpful and welcoming, as are all the staff. Customer service is second to none. Highly recommended 😀

Lovely staff, lovely pub but waited over an hour for 3 meals, finally got our food when the quiz was about to start couldn’t hear ourselves think or hear each talking. (Wouldn’t of booked if knew it was quiz night) just a shame as we use to go regularly before being taken over

Had a fantastic Sunday roast here with 3 friends. Staff were extremely friendly and we were made to feel very welcome. Lovely atmosphere, the fire made it even better. Will definitely be recommending to others and would be delighted to visit again.

Just lovely. A great place for a family meal. Love how they are able to do smaller portions of their main menu rather than just nuggets or spaghetti, works well and a nice selection of beers and gin too!! stopped off just passing through the village, never been in the Downey Armes before. Had a drink and a meal with my son. 100% recommend a stop! the food is excellent good beer and friendly staff, we will definitely be popping in if we are passing again. great pub

Really excellent meal, so good we booked again. Staff were so friendly and attentive it was a real pleasure to find such a gem of a pub on our three day visit to York. I had the salt and pepper squid...lovely starter followed by steak and ale pie which was truly delicious and massive...there was so much I had to force myself to finish it...the proprietor said they specialise in quality and quantity...very true! Five 🌟

My wife and I called in on spec at lunch time today and were given a nice table beside a crackling log fire in a very comfortable bar area, a nice start, there were a number of real ales available but I cant get past Timothy Taylors Landlord ale which was in great form. We chose starters of deep fried king prawns in batter with chilli jam and Carrot soup followed up by a main of belly pork with a big Yorkshire pudding and loads of vegetables all served by lovely staff. Neither of us had any room for a pud but I managed a coffee before we left full and very happy, Well done to everyone at the Dawnay Arms.

Had a meal here recently. The staff were amazing. Nothing too much trouble. The food was really nice and the portions were generous. Definitely recommend this place.

We had fantastic meals, we had a prawn curry, that was to die for and the plough man's, it was awsome, I would definitely recommend, we can't wait to go back 😀 the staff are a great lot too, lovely people, nothing to much, always happy and fun to be with ❤️🥰

Great Sunday roast and friendly staff

Such a lovely pub. Visited tonight phoned ahead and managed to get a table. Met with friendly and polite staff. Good selection of food with a specials board aswell. Would highly recommend this place and will certainly be going back.

Had a wonderful meal here after an unpleasant experience elsewhere earlier in the day. All staff were very warm, welcoming and helpful. The menu was amazing and had a wide selection, we were stuck for choices! The food was delicious and the portions were huge! Will definitely be coming back!

Called in tonight for dinner with partner and son, so pleased we did. It was curry night. All you can eat buffet, three types of curry, rice, chips Nan bread and popadoms. Absolutely brilliant, staff are so friendly and lovely, can’t do enough for you and the food was really really tasty. And such a reasonable price. Will definitely go again.

5 of us had a great Sunday lunch. Plenty of veg and a couple of Yorkshire puds. My daughter opted for chicken goujons, fish platter for me which was excellent. Good choice of beers. Really nice friendly atmosphere and value for money. I'll be coming.

Lovely pub. Great food with very friendly staff. Also to note I am coeliac and the chef is very knowledgeable and nothing is too much trouble. Running a limited menu due to reduced staffing but with gf and vegan options and adaptions on request. Highly recommended a must try!!

We were staying in the area and had seen previous good reports for Dawnay Arms.Were not disappointed and we were made most welcome. The food was excellent and we would certainly recommend. Garry gave us their business card with phone number as we may have been arriving late the following evening, when we returned for another excellent meal.
