Family favourite - when we visit the area the Royal Oak is always on the list of places to include, usually Tuesday night when it’s 2for1 on parmos! And the parmos are spectacular! The pub has such a cosy, welcoming feel and there is a dog friendly area for dining. The standard is food is 5* and we will keep coming back in the future.

Booked for two people and two small dogs. Food was excellent. The only thing that stopped me giving 5 stars was the music. It was a random mix of annoying music rather than music more befitting for a country pub. Sorry guys, it’s just my personal taste.

Pamo Tuesday! A great deal and a good offer. Place was busy, but luckily we got a table for two without booking. Staff were great as usual. Friendly, and efficient. Sadly my Hot Shot Parmo was not up to it's usual standard. For £2.50 extra (extortionate) my pepperoni was just chucked on top (Normally under the cheese), there were a couple of random chilli's on there as well, but NO SIGN of any Japapeno . Was big though. Most disappointed, but I'm sure it was just on off day for a busy kitchen.

Very disapointing experience!. After a lovely weekend in York I wanted to treat my grandparents to a Sunday dinner in a traditional pub. On first impressions don’t get me wrong the atmosphere was nice and the decor was lovely. When seated however we where squeezed onto a small table despite it not being too busy. When ordering we found many of the options we fancied where unavailable despite only being 6pm. We all decided to have a beef dinner. When it arrived I noticed that I was missing a Yorkshire pudding compared to everyone else. I assumed it had accidentally been missed or knocked off however when I asked the waiter he told me that they had ran out of Yorkshire puddings !. When digging in to our dinner we all noticed that the dinner was cold, the beef was so tough you couldn’t cut it and the carrots had not been cooked. Don’t get me wrong the waiter was lovely and to be honest I felt sorry for him as it was only himself and another man running the pub who where both ran off their feet. When notifying him of our disappointment he did offer us a discount and was very apologetic. I understand businesses can be understaffed however this was a very disappointing way to end our lovely weekend in York.

Upon fishing a lovely walk around Roseberry Topping, me and my 3 sisters were on the hunt for a good meal to refuel before driving the hour journey back home. A quick Google search lead us a few minutes down the road to this little gem of a place. First impressions were that it was a very welcoming cosy and friendly place very traditional, the staff were amazing, very accommodating and thankfully didn't mind we were a wee bit muddy from the walk 🙏 hot drinks brought straight out to us. We weren't waiting very long before our breakfasts were brought out , and they were delicious very good quality ingredients and you could tell everything was cooked fresh and was full of flavour, I must give a big shout out to the black pudding it was the best I've had ( tasted and looked home made) we were all very impressed and cleaned our plates leaving feeling very full and satisfied, if I was in the area again I would 100% be eating here again.

Booked for 4pm. Arrived around 3.30pm, seated straight away by a friendly and welcoming waiter. We were able to order straight away and drinks arrived promptly, shortly followed by our Sunday lunch. Our pooch was catered for also with his own meal served with ours (£4.50 for doggy meal). Atmosphere lovely as always, food delicious 😋 pork crackling especially so. I had the trio of meats, my mam went for beef dinner and with a bottle of red and a coffee thrown in the whole bill came to £62.30 (I believe). Which I'd say is value for money given the quality of service the food and general ambience.

Traditional Yorkshire pub in the center of a lovely village. Beautiful room furnished in a modern country style and immaculate newly refurbished shower room. Delicious food! We had dinner and breakfast and the ingredients were all quality and cooked to perfection. The sausage, bacon and black pudding come from the butcher next door and the eggs are really fresh. For starters we had the ham hock terrine with piccalilli and thd seafood cocktail, very generous portions. Lots of smoked salmon, crayfish tails and smoked macrel on the seafood cocktail. Can recommend the lasagne, the parmos and the chips are proper chips, yummy. We tried a bailies creme brulee and a lemon and Berry delicious, both scrumptious. The bar has a great selection of beers, lagers, gins & wines and gas a real fire. The staff are all really friendly and attentive. Love this pub and can't wait to return.

Reserved a table online for a small family reunion. Clearly a popular spot and there were a lot of people milling around outside and drinking outside the pubs on the main street. Service inside was good and there was a good choice of food which was very tasty. Sadly there was a large group of well watered men booked onto the table next to us, in the area by the bar, which completely spoilt the last half of our meal as we simply couldn't hear each other talking. It was a real shame that staff didn't consider putting us in the other part of the restaurant where there were several empty tables all evening, or relocating us for the last part of our meal when it would have been obvious we could no longer converse or hear. .... this would have made all the difference. (It would have been awkward having to ask to be moved ... but care from front of house staff could have carefully relocated us.)

Food was tasty. However the crusted cod ordered by 2 of our party was served with a very meagre amount of tiny pieces of crispy potatoes. It was like 3 chips chopped up. I pointed this out to the girl serving as it was more like a starter. She took it back to the kitchen and quickly returned to say chef was making some more. I had to laugh and I think even the serving girl was embarrassed when she brought me a tiny bowl you’d normally get mayo/ketchup in with another very meagre portion of potato pieces! Also it was meant to be served with creamed leeks and there must have been a leek shortage too! Saying that the other 2 party members had significantly larger portions, a gammon and a sizzler. When the plates were cleared I also informed the guy of the issue with the potatoes served with the cod. He asked the other person if hers was the same and she had said she wasn’t bothered by the small portion, she does not have much appetite and often has a starter instead of main. It’s a shame I came home hungry and I’m not a big eater myself. I’d consider going again but if you’re hungry give the crusted cod a miss! Edit 22/10/24. The owner rang me last week to discuss and apologise. He told me he would be speaking to the manager and would get back to me.
