Apr 2025 We have made 2 visits to The Buck in recent weeks and tried a variety of meals in the bar. The food is pretty good. Portion sizes are about right for us. * Meat Feast Parmo was tasty * Cheesy Garlic bread was very nice. * The Big Buck burger was pretty good. * Pie and mash was good. * Cod and Chips was tasty and sizeable. * The chips were ok, could be better

The Buck is a large hotel/pub on the way into the village with a nice position by the stream side. From a design and decor perspective it is pretty much the norm for modern pubsand although it seems to target diners as the main market, there is enough space to cater for people who just want a drink. On a Monday evening it was pretty quiet when we were in and the service was pleasant, as were our drinks.

Evening meal visit with family. Food was good overall, service very slow. I appreciate that home cooked food takes time but we were there nearly two hours for a main course and dessert. Staff could have taken a drinks order as we were shown to a table for example. Had to fill in service gaps by asking for drinks, food etc and we had to find where the cutlery was kept so we could eat our dessert. Staff weren’t particularly welcoming but looked overworked. Another family came in and left again before being served.

We were disappointed with our recent visit here, we came down on the morning and booked a specific table by the window for our anniversary later on in the evening, where we had our first date at that table. When we got there they sat us at a different table (completely forgot about the table we booked for the special occasion) and when we asked they sat us in one in another window, but this was still disappointing for our special evening. The table next to us also got a bunch of sweets inside their bill but we didn’t get any lol

Not recommended April 2025 Very disappointing. Poor service, dirty upholstery, awful food. Booked to eat here while staying at Angrove Country Park, we were a group of four. Shown to our table asked for drinks order before we even sat down. Asked for a few minutes. Drinks ordered. Food ordered Starters arrived very quickly Chicken wings greasy and not worth bothering with. Pork bites over cooked and tough. Garlic dough balls OK, turned out to be the nicest thing served. Main course steaks avoud if you dare to visit. Over cooked and tough didn’t eat. Chips in our view needed more cooking and soggy . No one came to ask how meals were or if we needed more drinks. Didn’t stay for pudding. Went to bar and asked for bill was told how much was due so I asked to see the bill and was huffed at. Paid and left. Very very disappointing evening

I am absolutely shocked with this place I went for a nice day out with my family and went in and the staff (jess) we're so rude to the point where she was arguing with someone in my family when he was asking for a plaster because my sister cut her finger on the bench we were sat at and then a different person was touching all my food, and speaking of food it was not the best but my lemonade was out of date and was disgusting, not happy with this place, WOULD NOT RECOMMEND!!!

Very expensive vs quality of food. I'd rate just above pub food. My onions ring rock hard & chips cooked & re-warmed, shocking. I visited following recommendation only to be very disappointed. Menu purposely confusing so you end up paying extras. No heating on freezing. Unfortunately will not return, and still to my usual restaurants like bay horse where it is same prices but much better quality food.

She was so patient and had such a gorgeous demeanour! The food arrived! It was absolutely perfect, most of us had Parmo’s and one had a fish dish! We called into The Buck on the banks of the river Leven in Great Ayton for Saturday lunch. We had booked a table for three in advance. Between us we chose one small Atlantic cod & chips (£11.95) , slow roasted lamb hotpot (£18.95) and winter fish stew (£19.95) All the meals were delicious. The fish stew consisted of cod, salmon and smoked haddock in a tasty tomato, chorizo, garlic, basil and white wine sauce with crusty bread. The hotpot contained lamb shoulder in a mint and redcurrant gravy, potatoes and veg. The fish came with mushy peas, chips and tartare sauce. The staff were friendly and the service was prompt. We ended up here after googling ‘best parmos in the area’ - and we weren’t disappointed at all. The parmos are delicious, lovely thick chicken breast (not battered too thin as a lot of places do), a wide choice of toppings and just the right amount of bech and cheese. Garlic sauce (for an extra £1.50) was very garlicky and creamy. The only criticism is that salad is an extra £1.50- we ordered one each but were each given a bowl which was mainly huge chunks of tomato and red onion. Dessert was delicious, the sticky toffee pudding was melt in the mouth and the local ice cream was absolutely divine, it was almost like clotted cream. The pub itself is rustic and charming and in a lovely location next to the water. Service was friendly. Would highly recommend and will definitely be back.

The food was beautiful 3 parmos and a steak pie, the parmos were succulent and tasty, the steak pie melted in the mouth. The service however was truly appalling. A wait of around 15 min before the menus arrived even though we had told the staff we were there, a reasonable wait for drinks and food, but at no point did any of the staff come and ask if our food was ok, nor did anyone come back to see if we wanted more drinks. It took 40 mins to attract attention to the fact that we'd finished our food, the waitress cleared only part of the plates, dropped a fork which she left on the floor and didn't come back to see if we needed anything else. Another 15 minutes later we decided to go to her, she was drinking coke and playing on her phone when we finally found her. Another 15 mins before the desert menu arrived, (kicking the dropped fork on the way) and the rest of the main course dishes were finally cleared to make room. As for the bill, lucky we're honest people, it never arrived, we had to go and find the waitress again in order to pay. If the place had been rammed and the staff run off their feet fair enough, but there were 4 of us and 1 other couple eating and 2 couples having drinks. Hardly busy. the food is really lovely but the staff and the service left so much to be desired. Think it's going to be a while before we go back, hopefully by then the staff will have either been changed or have been shown how to run food service.

Stopped on our way home from a shopping trip. Just picked it off Google by looking at the reviews. My son had a "Parmo" which he enjoyed and we both had "steak pie". Normally I like shortcut pastry but it had good reviews. It actually came in a large dish like a stew with something like a puff pastry Croissant on top. Whilst a bit unusual the meat was beautiful and tender with a lovely Gravy, very tasty. It came with accompanying vegetables and chips or mash, we both really enjoyed it. I would eat the same thing if I came again.

Lovely Sunday dinner , had the small chicken and it was big enough with plenty of vegetables. Can't fault any thing friendly helpful staff especially when you leave your keys in the pub like I did 🤣. Thanks again.

Didn't eat there but.the food looked excellent. Would love to have had chance to eat the steak pie! Although fully booked upon entry, staff found us places to sit for 8 people for a few drinks

Top food, top service and very reasonably priced. One of my favourite places to eat. The parmos are brilliant and their chips are the best 👌

Great farmhouse parmo and lovely steak sarnies. Friendly staff and nice atmosphere. Lovely outside seating for when the weather suits it sitting by the river, Recommended. Update: Dec 2023 meat feast parmo was amazing with loads of meat slices under a generous amount of cheese but not overpowerering. Thanks for a lovely meal.

Nice atmosphere, good service, very nice fresh veg, but the roast was a bit dry and I think it was a processed one, I was expecting something better than that to be honest, a real roast would have topped everything off nicely.

Ate here after a day walking. Very friendly staff, good service and most importantly, amazing food. Not being from the area we don't often get the chance to eat Parmos so took the opportunity. It was soooo good!

We had our sister in laws 30th birthday party here. It was amazing, they allowed us to decorate the room, buffet was outstanding, lots of drink options, staff are helpful and friendly. Toilet access and plenty of seating with free parking outside. Play area for children too

The Royal Oak is the heart of the village and has a real homely community feeling. The staff are friendly but Wendy and Jackie are particularly welcoming and go above and beyond. For the 3 days we were there both could not have done more and you can tell they both still love working there and are clearly a big part of the place. The village is lovely and we enjoyed the surrounding area including Guisborough which has a wonderful bar called Badgers serving excellent food. Roseberry topping is a few minutes drive and parking was easy if you arrive before 10.30am. We were impressed overall and really glad we stayed at the Royal Oak in Great Ayton.
