With the old manager/assistant manager this was easily a 5 star place. I think his name is Lucas. However, the “acting” manager lady was unbelievably rude and actually nasty (a word I don’t use freely). She reduced a heavily pregnant woman to tears due to her aggression in denying any responsibility to a simple order mix up. A lovely customer came to console the pregnant woman after who said he was shocked at how she was treated. I calmly explained to the acting manager that she was trying to share the blame of the misunderstanding of the order, so that her aggressive defensive of any wrong doing was unnecessary. There was shared sympathy towards the staff that day as the chef had quit the morning of, and total understanding as to why there was a reduced menu. She just wanted to make sure her the payment was correct as she was being charged LESS. The acting manager then bizarrely moaned to me that the none of the “posh customers here” respect her staff and when I politely asked if she could apologise to the pregnant lady she refused and went on to say “Lucky you for being off on Father’s Day, none of us want to be working here today”. I couldn’t see what her point had to do with the simple issue, or to explain her nastiness. I’ve never been so disappointed in a manager’s, or in this case, acting manager’s, care for customers, or self awareness. I’ve loved every visit to Eight On the River, and introduced it to many family and friends. But I’ve not been back since. I hope to return one day when customer treatment is improved.

Positives - coffee tasted really good, person behind counter was friendly My daughter was happy with her panini. Nice location Negatives - my big breakfast - for £13 expected much better. Poached egg dry, mushroom and tomato had a detergent like taste, sausage overdone. For £15 you get much better in cricket club next door. Felt like it had been cooked by someone who isnt a proper chef Customer service - table dirty, no cutlery or ketchup in Dispenser, waitress a bit unfriendly and aloof when I mentioned it. Coffee served in paper cups when sitting in. Why? Shame as been better in past when came in

If you're by the river and are going to be open on Easter Monday, the first thing you do is ensure your eaterie has enough staff - in advance!! Today they were short of staff (why, Manager?) there were a lot of people there and, in our case, we were not told when ordering our food at the bar, that there would be a 30-minute delay. 30 minutes??? It was an hour before our jacket potato arrived! - and it was lukewarm! We complained in a friendly fashion - and were given a free coffee for the inconvenience, and no apology by the Manager lady, who said because we'd eaten it it must have been up to par! I was too browned off by then to insist on a refund. Be warned!

We decided to stop for a drink but the menu persuaded us to eat . We had a Cappuccino and San Pelegrín which is what we originally wanted but on top of that we had Eggs Benedict and Baked Potato with Coronation Chicken. The food was delicious but what made this place stand out was the welcome and the friendliness of the Assistant Manager- Lucas . He was funny , charming and made the experience very enjoyable. This was my first time out following quite a nasty operation and I am certainly glad we made the effort.

Located above the rowing club, this is a rather dated cafe which serves pretty decent coffee and snacks, albeit we found the prices a bit steep. There's some outdoor sheltered seating and good views of the river. We had the feeling that if someone used their imagination and invested a little money, they could turn this place into something quite special.

On the plus side a great location but the cafe is beginning to look a bit tired. On the negative side is the food. Recently I ordered scrambled eggs on toast with a side of mushrooms . I received one mushroom and on querying the mushroom quantity I was told it had shrunk🤣. A week or so later I returned hoping they’d had an off day. This time I decided to order scrambled eggs with bacon snd was informed by the server that it was £2.50 a rasher!! Unless things change I don’t think I’ll be going back.

Wonderful, friendly staff make this restaurant somewhere to visit again and again. I come most days as it's the halfway point in my morning walk. The manager is efficient, personable and friendly and has the perfect personality for a customer-facing role. She understands how to make people feel welcome and valued. The food here is lovely: gorgeous eggs on sourdough toast and a delectable selection of cakes too if you're tempted. Come to Eight on the River - see Molesey Rowing Club rowers in action and dogs running and playing along the towpath. The terrace is lovely in good weather and gets a lot of sun, the balcony is a great vantage point too blankets and seat pads are available for colder weather, so no excuse to not be outdoors all year! One of my favourite places in Molesey. Thank you all so much!

Had lunch here today. We’d visited a few times and had great food but today was awful. I had avocado on sourdough toast(£8). The pieces of bread were really small from the end of the loaf, the avocado was scraped across the bread like butter it didn’t fully cover the slice with a puddle of oil on top. My husband had a cheese and tomato sarnie. Filling was a slice of plastic cheddar cheese which didn’t reach the edge of the bread and a few slices of tomato. He said it was tasteless and dry. So disappointing as the portions in the past have been massive. We both left hungry. The service was not as friendly or helpful as previously so maybe this place has had a change of management it’s definitely not a change for the better!

We came here during the week and had a coffee which was really nice. Unfortunately, today (Saturday) it was jam packed. The table was dirty and there was a huge queue to order. We asked for plain avocados on sourdough with poached eggs and coffees-around £22. We waited about 20 minutes then the food turned up-the coffee took about another 5 mins after that. The avocado wasn’t plain. It had mint and chilli (?) in. There was a huge pile of it on sourdough but it had soaked in to the bread and the taste was really unpleasant. The poached eggs were stone cold and full of egg snot. The pepper on the table didn’t have the lid screwed on and the lid came off as I used it ALL over my food! It’s put me off poached eggs and avocado for life. We tried to attract their attention but couldn’t so left and we won’t return. We couldn’t face queuing up again to speak to the staff and couldn’t get through the space to get to the front. They don’t seem to be able to cope with big numbers.

Met my partner for lunch yesterday as it wasn't far from where he works. Wasn't overly busy so figured an hour lunch break would give us time for at least a sandwich. Firstly we were served the wrong drinks and the glasses were disgusting and grubby. After half an hour were told they'd run out of sour dough for my partners sandwich, he opted for farmhouse for his toasty. 15minutes later they arrived, my un toasted sandwich had clearly been left to one side uncovered as it was by now dry and most unappealing. An apology was offered with complimentary tea or coffee. All in all a total disaster and a waste of a lunch break. Won't be going back , it's a shame as the location is beautiful and really could offer so much more.

I wish I could have rated this place more highly - it had so much potential especially the position, the quaint interior and the view from the balcony. Unfortunately the place had an air of shabbiness and the staff were not very friendly. Tables weren't cleaned between customers and the toilets were really shabby and looked as though nobody checks that they're clean (never a good sign!) Food was ok but when we ordered drinks , every one of the glasses was covered in stains as though the dishwasher had no salt or rinse aid in it. My sister went and asked for another glass and was given one with a lipstick mark on the edge! This left us with an unpleasant taste in our mouth (literally) .

We used to be great fans of this, our local, riverside cafe since Cavan Bakery took over and took many friends there. However, the last two visits were not good. Dry slices of cake last time - one a crumby lemon and blueberry and the other with greasy coffee "buttercream" - and this time we went for my favourite (as was) Ham and Gammon melt and Mushrooms on Toast.

Myself and my wife were having a very pleasant walk along the Thames whilst visiting the area to attend a wedding. We thought we’d have a nice coffee stop & a cake. So we entered and ordered our coffee & cake, when I attempted to pay, I was told that they did not accept Scottish banknotes, the last time I looked we still lived in the United Kingdom! This not the sort of welcome we are used to and I have never had my Scottish notes (which are legal tender) in the whole of the uk rejected.

I used to come here under the previous owner so was curious to see whether it was still fantastic quality food & drinks. Sadly I was rather disappointed. The setting is wonderful & the menu appears to offer a vast array of food. However the food itself was lacklustre & strangely completely tasteless. My friend & I ordered two different toasted sandwiches. Both of them tasted very bland & not very enjoyable. My cheese & ‘gammon’ ham was rubbery & the ham was of very poor quality - certainly not what I would call gammon ham. Just a very small garnish of leaves on the side of the plate - poor value for £6.95! The ‘special’ chicken & basil pasta was overwhelmingly rich, swimming with cream & again lacking in flavour or taste & extortionate at £8.50. There was a fantastic range of cakes & doughnuts which were lovely. Thankfully the hot drinks & smoothies were a hit too. My advice is eat before you go & just have a cake & drink there!!

I often visit this cafe with friends as it is local and there is free parking nearby. We were surprised that the owners of "Thyme by the River" were no longer in place and the cafe has been bought by Cavan Bakery. The interiors are the same, but the cakes are now displayed separately from the main counter keeping them away from excitable dogs or sneezing children/adults. The main difference which is a great additional service is that once you have made your order it is brought to the table as part of their customer service.

We visited Eight on the River specifically to try their cooked breakfasts. We had thought the vegan in our group could have an edited version of the vegetarian meal, but there was too much butter in it. So we were delighted with the effort the staff put in to create a vegan breakfast for him that was worthy of the £8+ we had paid. (And the carnivore meal was very good too!) On another note, I'm really happy that this cafe takes your order at the counter and then gives you a number to take to a table, even if it's just for coffee, rather than making you lurk by the coffee machine until it's your turn.

Went here today for lunch after a walk. The place is in a nice location with river views if you can get an outside table. The staff were pleasant enough but it took a long time to order and there was a long queue at the bar when we ordered as one girl seemed to be doing everything. The ice machine was broken so there was no ice for the drinks but that wasn't a problem for me as my drink came from the fridge and was already cold. I ordered Welsh Rarebit but it was disappointing. In fact it didn't really taste like or look like Welsh Rarebit. We couldn`t understand why it tasted sweet - I thought maybe they had mixed ketchup into it. Then I found the culprits - there were raisins in it. They had used two types of cheese and neither tasted of cheese. It looked like it had been mixed in a saucepan as the cheese was still in it's grated form and it hadn't been near a grill. Probably a nice place to stop for a coffee but I wouldn't go back due to the unruly kids which were not controlled by the parents and the young staff probably felt uncomfortable telling their elders to rein in the little darlings.

After being warned there was a 30 min wait for food, we waited 45 mins (surrounded by screaming children - not the cafés fault, but far from a relaxing atmosphere to be trapped in) before asking where it was. After checking in a second time, it was established that our order was lost, and were told that this “happens sometimes”. We did receive a refund after a kerfuffle, as we had paid Contactless and didn’t have a receipt, and the person who had served us said it “wasn’t her fault” and promptly disappeared. Upon finally receiving a refund and voucher for a complimentary coffee, along with an apology there was an attempt at justification by saying “the chef is working in 65 degree heat”.

Having spent many afternoons sitting by the river watching the world go by or sometimes a cricket match at Thyme by the river, I was somewhat shocked to find it had moved up to the Molesey rowing club. We walked past the old location and carried on to the rowing club. There were a couple of blackboards announcing the new location but it doesn't actually advertise the fact that the club allows non members entry. In order to get a steady flow of business I would suggest a new clear sign to that effect. There is a lift for disabled or people with prams or pushchairs. The stairs lead directly into a welcoming bar area which is nicely decorated and has draft beer, cider and lager! The menu is good and there are several biscuits and other goodies on the bar. There is inside as well as external seating with waitress service and all are friendly and helpful. I did ask why they had moved but sadly all the staff were new and unable to answer the question. Finally the place encourages friendly well behaved dogs which is perfect if you or the pooch have worked up a thirst in this hot weather!

We found Thyme by the River by chance as we were walking the Thames towpath. A very attractive boathouse style building on an upper floor so the balcony gives great views over the river. We ordered sandwiches - the bar area and ordering process was slightly chaotic - not one of the five staff milling around were able to tell us what the soup of the day was, so someone was sent to the kitchen to find out. One choice of sandwich filling was sold out, but we both found something to our liking. Food is brought to your table very quickly, and the fillings were so generous they were bursting out of the bread, which more than made up for the lack of organisation. Staff were all friendly.

I had tried to book a table for Mother's Day nearly two weeks in advance but the phone was permanently engaged so I messaged them on FB but I didn't get a reply. When we got there it was fully booked except for outside which was ok as it wasn't too cold. We queued up to place our food order and the clearly stressed young woman was very good. However we then had to queue again to get our drinks which took 35 minutes ! The guy doing the coffee was doing his best but it was crazy.

Thyme by the river has now moved to Molesey boat club opposite the entrance to the cricket club. It is different to the old venue which was a great place. In many ways the new venue is much better. It's above the boathouse of the club and gives you a terrific view of the river. It has far better disabled access with a wheelchair and I suppose prams and buggy lift to the first floor which is great for wheelchair users. Its only just opened but I know they again will give us the great care and attention they gave us at the cricket club. When the weather gets better the outside area will really come into its own. The veranda over looks are really lovely play area for the children. Here's looking forward to a brilliant future for the Thyme team. Good luck and thanks for your continued service to all your loyal patrons. Max

This was my first visit to Thyme in its new location at Molesey Boat Club. The previous location at the cricket club was great, but the new location is, in my opinion, even better with a really spacious indoor area (dogs allowed) and outdoor balcony with great views across the river for when the weather gets better. The food and coffee is as good as ever.

This riverside cafe/restaurant is an ideal place in summer to sit outside and admire the boats as they cruise up and down the Thames and also to take in the thwack of willow at the adjoining cricket ground. In winter it's better to sit inside and relax on one of the comfy sofas sipping hot tea or coffee and eating a slice of one of their homemade cakes. You will need to be very hungry to appreciate the cakes as they serve huge portions. A treasure. They have a small car park but it's best to park either on the adjoining road or in a small car park just off the main road. It's very busy at weekends with dog walkers and canoeists from the nearby sailing club.

lovely location and food. Near a play ground for kids and good parking. Food was really tasty and quick. Big queue and had to ask for water to be filled up. You have to get your own cutlery.

Lovingly crafted latte delivered with a smile. Plenty of seats at this time of year, although the river is still serenely scenic.

Often meet friends or go with family for coffee and brunch or both! Love the location, staff and food. On this particular visit there were a lot of very noisy dogs inside with owners who seemed to think it was OK just to let them bark continuously.

Having previously heaped praise on this attractive venue, I was very sorry to see how things had deteriorated, on my recent visit. Staff, who seemed to be only half engaged with what they we're doing, were milling about aimlessly while customers were trying to place orders, and tables were left uncleared as servers just walked past ignoring the mess. How sad to see such a decline. Please get a grip so that this place once again becomes the attractive destination it once was.

Good Riverside Location, a choice of snacks cakes and nice Coffee....Let down badly by Staff who seem to have no idea of how to clear and clean tables, and no one to explain how to do it.

We walk the Thames Path most weekends and usually stop for a coffee somewhere along the way. Having walked over 140 miles now, I have to say most places we stop at are pretty abysmal when it comes to a decent coffee even though they have the espresso type machines, but we were not disappointed here. It was one of the best coffees we have had along the way and at a decent price too. Location is wonderful as the river runs along one side and the cricket pitch on the other. Relaxed vibe with plenty of seating outside and in, plus comfy looking sofas.

This is one of those little finds you, rather selfishly, don't want to tell the world about. It's dreamy location by the river opposite a cricket pitch looks like something out of Midsomer. The only thing that gets murdered tho is the sensational home cooking. Regardless of the season this is one place you can come and forget about life as it flows past you on the river.

Visited many times year round over several years - fabulous food, service and location. Recent visit 3rd November, Indifferent staff, food portions much smaller and still pricey. Embarrassed, because i had praised this place so much to a friend i was meeting there. Probably won't return. Once bitten twice shy. So sad because it's such a great location.

I've been here a few times to meet friends. We mainly chose to come here because of the nice location. More often than not I just have a cup of coffee but this time chose to also have a slice of cake. The cakes always look nice and the piece of chocolate cake was nice but with a Latte the price was £5.30. It wasn't even a huge coffee either!

Lovely setting by the Thames. Very good menu offered. However, the tables were sticky and not cleaned. Which to me is unacceptable as it tells you they are not too bother about hygiene and don't wash the tables down each day. Raises questions about what you don't see. Food was luke warm and cold when brought to the table. Will not be going again.

Work locally so have visited this place many times, and have also made the effort to come at weekends because it is such a great location. By the river, with a cricket pitch (and if you're lucky you can watch a game) and really relaxing. It was such a great place to come to. That's why I was so very disappointed when I brought 4 work visitors for lunch. The menu of paininis, sandwiches, and special lunches had been cut down to the point where I was so embarrassed to bring work visitors there. The choice is ridiculous. There are so many better alternatives close by. The staff were so apologetic and friendly but clergy trying hard to defend this ridiculously limited menu. This used to be a great place for informal business lunches, and family lunches. I'm sorry to say I can't possibly recommend it now. Please please, whoever made the decision to cut the menu so severely, think again. When the summer trade has finished you will rely on local businesses. What a disappointment.

At first the cafe seemed very appealing. But soon the usual feeling of disappointment sets in when you start to realise this cafe has the same problems as most places that could easily be remedied with a bit of care.1. The tables were filthy... not too bad to look at but on closer inspection and after putting your hands on them you realise they are sticky with quite a thick residue of filth. Chairs were also dirty.2. Staff that aren't really that bothered ... "you're a paying customer? So what? "3. Dogs - not a fan of dogs in food areas. Everybody loves dogs and seems to have them these days and the cafe is obviously cashing in on the "doggie pounds" but there are still many people that don't like dining with dogs.Coffee was quite nice though.

Great place for a stop and a break for dog walkers and visitors alike. The outside individual seating arrangement is splendid but ample seating inside the restaurant too. Very often, you may be watching a cricket game while having a drink or a meal. The coffee was good but the Victoria sponge cakes were really tasty and soft. Dogs are always welcome. A bowl of water is always nearby for them. Great place to spend sometime. The staff are very pleasant and friendly. After a long walk by the river,it is always a pleasure to stop by and have a break while having coffee and cake or a sandwich.

We were gifted a hotel stay which included a 3 course dinner. The inclusive options are limited however enough to choose from. Food was surprisingly nice however a bit on the sweet side. Surprisingly, there is a service charge on the value of the TOTAL bill value (even though we only paid for our drinks. We didn't mind but just something to be wary about.
