Just popped in, having walked into town on a Sunday morning, for a coffee and bite to eat. We were warmly greeted and swiftly served. The cafe is in a beautiful old Tudor cottage, with low ceilings and exposed beams. There are several tables with comfortable seats. We actually sat on an old leather sofa, where I enjoyed a fresh warmed almond croissant and my husband had a bacon and sausage bap. There are a selection of hot dishes available and yummy fresh cakes too. Situated behind County Hall, this independent cafe is well worth a visit

Two customers, we ordered two coffees and seat in a table. After 20 minutes a member or staff rushed to the table and stated that if we are not going to order more, we need to leave because other people waiting. We found this very rude. Coffees are expensive these days. We cannot enjoy it if they rushed you out . Very poor customer service. You just lost two customers. I don’t recommend it

When travelling down the A34 I detoured into Abingdon for a coffee and cake stop. I found 'Throwing Buns' and got a Latte and Banana Cake to go and it was fabulous coffee and nice cake. They had plenty of tray bake cakes to choose from and the interior decor was great, a shame I was taking mine 'To Go'. Staff were friendly and prices reasonable. There's outside seating as well which would be great on a nice day to sit and sip coffee, nibble cake and watch the world go by. Highly recommended.

Sat outside on a damp day, which could have been a bit dismal, however we both really enjoyed our meals here , overlooking the Market Square and the atmospheric County Hall. Pay as you order, and then waiter(ess) service. Good Coffee and excellent Teas ( in a bone china teapot). Bacon and brie role was outstanding, and the only down side was an inconsiderate smoker.Well worth giving the national chains a miss and supporting a local based coffee shop.

This is a lovely little gem of a coffee shop within the heart of Abingdon. The name is a simple but effective and is a reference to Abingdon's history of bun throwing, which is now a 400-year-old tradition. There is a cosy feel to this small cafe, with a lot of old fashioned memorabilia on the walls. The seats and solid, yet comfortable and the customer service is very friendly. There is also seating outside for approximately 10 people, and the same again inside. If you like somewhere that is a little more quiet compared to the large number of coffee shops within close proximity within the town centre, this the perfect option. The main gentleman who works at this establishment is friendly and always smiling. There tends to be a lot of younger adults employed as well, working the odd hour here and there, this is nice to see as it shows support for the local community. Our favourites include the follows; spiced chai or vanilla chai latte, flat white and mocha. Portion sizes are good and there are some simple breakfast/lunch options available as well.

This convenient and comfortable cafe boasts a prime location beside the beautiful Baroque town hall. It's name reflects the quirky & fun local tradition of "bun throwing" to celebrate jubliees and events. The service was courteous and efficient, the choice range on the menu, impressive for a small cafe, offering savoury lunchtime snacks as well as teas and cakes. Prices are very reasonable and the ambience relaxed and with character. We were very glad we opted for it, rather than one of the generic chains, and will no doubt visit again.

It's quite cute and cramped in the Throwing Buns tearoom (the weird name celebrates the strange habit of chucking cake down on the residents - something noted in the framed cuttings from newspapers that dot the walls), but there's a good courtyard to sit outside in warmer weather at the front.Service is friendly enough, although our loyalty cards - stamped from previous visits - were refused, on the grounds that there were now new owners in the establishment, and they didn't feel like honouring the loyalty cards from past owners. That seemed rather mean and short-sighted, and hardly likely to make us rush back. But the staff insisted on refusing the old cards, and simply stamping and issuing us with another. Good customer service would have been more sympathetic! The coffee was, however, good. And the tea (said my companion) was also nice.Small tables, cramped interior, good atmosphere, keen prices.

We popped after an early morning walk for breakfast and ordered two breakfasts and tea.The tea was served in a lovely large pot which was more than sufficient to quench our thirst. To enjoy something the first sense is how it looks, the breakfast duly arrived piled high on the plates and the poached eggs were so hard they could be used as golf balls and the toast was burnt which could only seen after wading through the pile of food concealing it.The waitress took the eggs away and returned a long while later asking if we wanted the eggs replaced.

This is a nice pitstop if you're not a fan of the coffee giants (I spotted 2 Costas in Abingdon which is 2 too many for me). It is certainly larger on the inside than appears from the outside, but still quite cosy. The staff were friendly, the decor had a faint whiff of market town oddness which felt appropriate given the towns tradition of literally "throwing buns" on one day of the year (lots of framed newspaper articles chronicling said event). The menu was fairly average and I was perfectly content with my mocha and toasted teacake. Nothing particularly special, but I hold a place for little cafes like this one, with no pretensions whatsoever.

The café was quite pleasant and bright with friendly staff and the baguettes and capuccinos were fine, but the toilet really brings the place down. Heading down the stairs the environment became decidedly shabby compared with the café itself. The floor of the toilet was unswept and dirty and the washbasin clearly hadn't been cleaned for quite a while. Although it would have been possible to change a baby's nappy there (there was a plastic sheet on a concrete surface) the facilities would need a good upgrade to make it safe and hygienic to do so!A good wash down and a couple of coats of paint around the staircase and the toilet would make such a difference, together with a thorough clean of the facilities at least every day!Wouldn't recommend the place until this had been done...

Having recently moved from the north to Didcot, we decided to explore the beautiful town of Abingdon. We had a scope around and saw this cute and beautifully painted exterior "throwing buns".We popped our head round the door to see if there was a table as it looked busy. We got a fab seat on the lovely thick wooden chairs and tables and we're greeted with a "hi guys" from the proprietor. After perusing the menu and cakes we ordered and paid ready to enjoy the surroundings. The interior was beautifully done with quirky and kitchy milk bottles hung along a wall and vintage posters it was delightful. After a delicious cuppa and cake which we took our time with as we couldn't get enough of the atmosphere and chilled vibe. Great cafe for refuelling and relaxing. Will visit again!

We dropped in to quench our thirst before visiting the nearby museum. We were welcomed and our order was taken immediately and brought quickly. There was an excellent selection of cakes etc as well as the drinks, but this was not what we wanted and we did not sample them. There was a menu, but again, we were not seeking a meal. The really pleasant aspect of this visit is that it is an old building, dark and cramped inside, and yet feeling cosy rather than cramped and very full with the local 'punters' who clearly know a good thing when they see it. Real coffee properly made and milk creamed rather than steamed. A really good experience.

As an occasional visitor, the service here never seems to change. Just persistently good. From basic tea and coffee to soup and a roll, a warm welcome environment, busy at times. But definitely worth a visit!

We stumbled on Throwing Buns by chance. We ordered afternoon tea for two and it was exquisite! Lovely warm welcome, very comfortable surroundings, excellent service, fantastic choice of delicious sandwiches, cakes and treats. Brilliant value for £17.50 for two. A wonderfully English experience. Well worth a visit! Tip: Go hungry!!!

A quirky, cosy interior with a lot of history. Nice food and drink. Service is a working progress, with young waitresses who seem to lack some confidence. Good place for a quick snack whilst shopping.

We were initially attracted to the unique interior design and cosiness of the throwing buns. The service by the first staff member of staff at the counter was very friendly, however the waitress who served our drinks and cake did not speak to us once and placed our order at the edge of the table, which I felt was rather rude! I was disappointed with my tiffin cake, very dry and tea was weak (had to remove tea bag into my mug.) The chocolate cake that my boyfriend had was delicious though. Shame that the prices didn't reflect my experience!

It's just a shame they're directly by the busy road, otherwise I'd go there much more often. Shame I can't take my dog inside. Very sad about that. Again - I'd come much more often if I could.Food and drinks are all fantastic - first class quality and very friendly boss and staff.Very happy they now offer unsweetened soya milk on my request. I call that flexible and customer oriented.Beautiful ambience as well.

What a great place! I drive by it several times a day and it's always busy. Having a spare half hour we paid it a visit! Amazing! Food superb, service fantastic, quaint place and very friendly, a local place to catch up with friends, will definitely re-visit for a breakfast again.

My 3 year old son and I had lunch in here today, and what a lovely find it was. The order was taken accurately and with a smile, and it arrived very quickly. The food was good, made with a traditonal flair. Even though my son was not the quietest of patrons, there was not a single eyebrow raised as in most other places by either the staff or the other customers. I was also very pleased that after I asked some questions about the authenticity of their claim that "Our products ae locally sourced", the answers were very forthcoming and that 90% of their products are indeed locally sourced! The only thing I would say are a let down, are the toilet facilities. These were dirty and did not appear very welcoming to children. Also the decor is contrary to the local sourcing they are proud of, with lots of Brazilian coffee bags hanging on the walls...even though all their coffee is from Oxfordshire.Overall though, a great place to eat and enjoy a spot of lunch.

I have visited this café several times, often for meetings. It is not particularly my taste in décor but is functional. There is not a lot of room and can get quite crowded. The toilets are also down a flight of stairs and not very uplifting - in fact quite dingy and next to a storage room. The food is on the whole good but you have to be careful of the teapots which leak all over the table. The benefit is that it is central, the staff pleasant and efficient and it is functional. However, for me it is not a place I look forward to visiting but more for practical purposes.

A lovely cafe with lovely cakes. The cafe could do with a good clean, the walls in places are splashed with drinks, and the carpet on staircase down to the toilets is filthy.
