We went here to celebrate my birthday, the last time we were here was a couple of years ago and what a change. The menu was very disappointing and no better than most roadside pubs. I had ham, egg and chips as there was nothing else that I fancied, the eggs were hard and rubbery and the ham dry and hard on the edges, but the chips were ok even though they were from the freezer not fresh cut. My wife was also disappointed and made do with 2 starters, the rest of the party ordered from the menu but all were disappointed with what was served up. It is also my opinion that the food is overpriced for what you get, but that maybe because there are a lot of staff faffing about. Had we been out early enough I would have insisted we left and went to another pub. The cheery on top was the table position, we were on the thoroughfare to the bar which was being well used as it's the only pub in the village. When we asked if we could move because of the noise and how busy it was we were told the other tables were reserved, but from what I could see there were tables available.

Our friends live locally, lucky them! This was our first visit to The Boar’s Head with them. Hard to choose from the menu and the specials board due to it all sounding tasty and worth ordering. The food was brilliant. The chicken moist. The side salad was a great mix, including fig slices, not served over chilled and tasteless. The pie eaters cleared their plates! Returning for Sunday lunch before end of September and, hopefully, on a regular basis after that! Oh, staff were great. Biggest disappointment? No room for pudding ……….

Love going here, for many years. We are a group of 3 couples. Doreen and staff are always so welcoming . The food and atmosphere is always excellent. I am gluten free and I have so many choices. Such lovely food. Already booked again for tomorrow 14th September.

It was an absolute pleasure dining at the Boars head, the team were all very attentive and the Sunday roast was absolutely perfect in every way, tasty, hot and plenty of it 😋

I have just had some of the finest dining and warmest welcome you could wish for. If you happen to be passing this lovely little village ,try and pop in ,you won't be disappointed!

This place is an absolute gem; excellent, homecooked food, professional and friendly staff and a beautiful setting. Our friends go every week and we join them whenever we can, usually for Sunday lunch. Portions are generous and menu varied and interesting. The lamb was beautifully cooked, as always. We have never been disappointed and highly recommend.

Freshly home cooked food, what’s not to like? Good sized portions, choice of crispy chips or creamy dauphinois potatoes accompaniments, brilliant mixed leaf salads which often include grapes, figs, strawberries, and even yummier desserts all home-made not shop bought frozen rubbish. Many different “Specials” on offer, but hurry - they get ordered and eaten very quickly! I can safely say we’ve never had a bad meal here, whether lunch or dinner, and the BH will always be my go-to restaurant for either a special occasion or just because I can. Welcoming and reasonably priced menu, good service and lovely surroundings. Try it, you won’t be disappointed.

Having not visited The Boars Head since pre-Covid times (and I was impressed then) we returned last Wednesday and none of the four of us could fault the selection, the meal itself, the staff, the ambience and the pricing structure which I regard as important. So many restaurants have jumped on the bandwagon and are charging totally unreasonable prices whilst here the cost is reasonable whilst the food is first-class. Thank you all at The Boars Head, we will certainly be returning.

In my opinion the Boars Head is the best eating place for miles around. The food is excellent, the service is excellent all the Staff are nice and friendly. I cannot say enough good things about it. We go regularly and have never been disappointed. We go on our own and also with friends who feel the same as us. Thank you all so much!

Good food. Good service, reasonable prices and a nice setting in a refurbished old building Parking outside the pub and with luck on the road onto which it faces. Beware the potholes on the road down to the village !

This place has an absolutely beautiful setting and the staff are very welcoming and attentive. This is not one of those personal attack reviews. In fact I would 100% return for a drink here. However, the menu is what I would call ‘classic’ and would be more suited to a cafe at a garden centre, or a Benidorm sea front. They have such a fantastic catchment area, for let’s face it, fairly wealthy people, that would pay money for good food. I would highly recommend they look at their competition, particularly in Hendred for example. Wish the lovely people all the best, but the menu and product needs an overhaul.

Really friendly and helpful service and wonderful food.

As we have had on previous visits the food and service was excellent. It's unfortunate that the menu doesn't change and thus is predictable. The reason for an lower score was because even though I had booked well in advance we we placed on a table in the pub area next to the entrance and facing the toilets. Because the booking was made a long time ago I would have expected a table in the main restaurant area, I'm pleased we were by a window as we could have been in the dark, as the lights were not working properly. This will be taken into consideration if deciding to visit again!

Just popped in on the off chance , although bar was being used for a party , they managed to find us a table for two. Food was great and staff were polite and friendly. Does not get any better.

Couldn't beat that Sunday roast....wonderful. Was my first visit, for an 80th birthday celebration and if I lived nearer I'd be a weekly visitor. Try it, you won't be disappointed.

Went for a meal with a couple of friends and they booked the Boars Head, having been there before we knew what to expect and wasn't disappointed. The meal service and everything else was perfect.

We have been to this restaurant numerous times and cannot fault it. Friendly and efficient service and the food is good too! The garlic mushrooms are delicious and the fillet steak is perfectly pink. We always leave space for a pudding. Highly recommended.

Full pub on a Wednesday night. Starter of pate was excellent but main courses were poor. Two ham main courses were rather skimpy. Chicken main course was tuff and inedible , whilst scampi were almost non existent within a big batter case. The land lady appeared and failed to apologise, indeed spoke down to us and was almost rude. Probably a bad night but it was the rude landlady that will mean that we won’t be going their again.

In the past we have had a lovey Sunday lunch at the Boars Head. We decided to have dinner with friends during the week. Bad idea. I had the chicken Piri Piri which was like rubber, my sister had deep fried prawns which were mostly batter. I spoke to the manager who said “Everyone else liked the chicken “. Service recovery nil. On reflection we won’t be back.

We came here this Saturday evening for the first time for a meal with friends, though they had been here before, living locally. We weren’t disappointed. The food, service and atmosphere were great. Thank you for a lovely evening!

Tucked away in the charming village of Ardington, in the beautiful Vale of the White Horse, and with my wife and two eldest granddaughters, we enjoyed a lovely lunch. Pleasantly greeted, and courteously served, we received generous portions of beautifully prepared and cooked dishes, at very reasonable prices. The restaurant has a wonderful ambience, and I can thoroughly recommend it.

Would have got 5 stars but for the difficult parking.

Lovely pub in the pretty village of Ardington. Small car park, but room to park on roads nearby. (Listed in Wantage, which it isn’t!). Excellent service, extensive menu with delicious food nicely presented - a most enjoyable experience. It was extremely busy, but the service was excellent.

We love sitting outside on a sunny evening after walk around village with Oscar the Springer. Great drinks range, excellent quality food and always a warm welcome.

We went to the Boar's Head to celebrate my mother's 96th birthday, 3 things to say: The staff went to great to great lengths to help my mother in look aw in her wheel chair, The food was very well cooked and served and My mother wants go again very soon....what more cud you ask! Ok h and the beer is excellent!

The setting is in a lovely village and has a car park .The lunch was of a high quality. There is an option to dine outside in better weather. I have dined here with my family on several occasions as it is convenient to meet up there.

Fantastic gastro pub with a gorgeous garden, lovely super fresh tasty food, good wines and they do a different menu every day ! Really nice staff who are attentive and provide a great service making the experience more enjoyable. Recommend and will definitely return soon!

Six of us had drinks and an evening meal on a Saturday night. Everything was perfect. The staff were welcoming, attentive, helpful, and actually remembered who was having what without having to ask "who is having the steak & ale pie". Everyone enjoyed their meals and the vegetables were properly cooked, not half raw as is often the trend. It was warm, comfortable and clean. There was no automatic service charge and the final bill was good value. Even the coffee was extraordinarily good, not bitter like in places where they do not bother to clean their filters. Altogether a wholly pleasurable experience.

Best meal I have had in a very long time. Absolutely superb! From starter to coffee, an experience to behold.

As usual perfectly cooked meal served properly in a wonderful setting, what more us there to ask for.

We had a lovely meal here yesterday everything was delicious and the staff were lovely too! I started with the salmon which was very tasty but could’ve done with a few more slices of bread to compensate for how much salmon there was. I also had the fillet steak done medium but was more medium rare this didn’t bother me and it was delicious. Definitely not chewy at all well done to the chef 👩‍🍳 Great service. It definitely is your local village pub lots of what seemed to be locals crowding the bar space but they didn’t get in the way of us. Lastly we finished with 2 coffees and a brownie very very good, definitely seemed homemade!

This is the best food around. ....fresh .....and large portions. Fairly priced ...cosy place to be ...helpful and friendly staff all the time....this is British ...through and through...5 star service....what a great place

The meal was good with an extensive menu although it is a bit of a punt as there is no menu available on the website. The pub is an old building but it seems to have lost its charm with the feel of a modern restaurant rather than a country pub.. The staff were pleasant but not experienced and there was no real warmth coming from any of them.

My husband and I had an extremely good lunch here and the service was excellent. The garlic mushrooms were the best I've ever had and my salmon roulade was so delicious. I thought it was very reasonably priced too.

Always a good welcome, the pub/restaurant always looks clean and tidy. This was the first time our friends had been for a meal and were impressed. My wife and I have never had a bad meal and the quality is always consistent

Wonderful pub. Lunched there today , did not book ( they prefer bookings as it gets busy) welcomed in , and had a great lunch, efficient, friendly, super food and good beer, all in a wonderful atmosphere and in a beautiful village. Well worth a visit , (as there is precious little in nearby Wantage), but it’s a gem . Do not miss it, only a short way off the main road but clearly signed. Thanks very much! 6 months later: back there for lunch , and well worth it! Still lovely staff and owner with great service and wonderful surroundings.

What a find, definitely one for the Telegraph review. Arrived with our black lab. I had the boar home made Pate to start, fabulous, followed by the most tender lamb I’ve ever had. My wife had cold water prawns to start gorgeous then the lamb. Loads of home grown veg. This is home made food made with care at very reasonable prices. It’s our go to pub now. Don’t ever go to the Beatle and Wedge, biggest rip off you’ll ever experience.

Good menu with plenty of choices and all the food we ordered was freshly-prepared and excellent quality. Friendly and pleasant staff looked after us well . There's a good range of wines, beers and ciders, too.

Made to feel very welcome when we entered as others have said. This was my second visit and again this was for lunch. Food is excellent and the service matches this. Prices are very reasonable X5 adults having starters and mains for £170 including drinks. It was full on our previous two visits so you will need to book ahead. Overall excellent.

Brought my work team here for an appreciation lunch. It was fab for an away day. Really special and very very large portions too.

The Boar's Head is one of the best pubs around! Myself, my husband, and our families stayed at nearby Ardington House, and we loved walking over to the Boar's Head to grab a pint and some food during our stay. Of course, as Americans, we found the Boar's Head to be quintessentially British and lovely, but we were even more enamored with the food and quality of service. The owner and staff took care of our large party on multiple occasions and made us feel like part of the family. Every dish we tried was outstanding, and they went above and beyond to make sure we had everything we needed. It was the cherry on top of a great stay at Ardington. We can't wait to come back!

Pleasant pub with outside seating in quiet village near C18 Ardington House (which can be visited on some days). Big gastro menu, but also lunchtime baguettes + side salad available. My coronation chicken one was delicious.
