Would absolutely avoid, not going back. We booked a champagne afternoon tea with a voucher. We did not get given or even offered the champagne. We didn’t see any waitress service to mention this accept to take our tea away 1/3 of the way through the meal and not return it. So no drinks for most of the afternoon tea. Very sad as this was a birthday outing.

This was our second visit to Thornbury Castle and we certainly weren’t disappointed. We stayed in the newly refurbished King Edward VI suite which is extremely spacious with a light and airy separate sitting room. Housekeeping standards are very high and the gardens are also very well maintained. All the staff were extremely professional and welcoming. We had an excellent evening meal with very good service so if you are staying I would definitely recommend dining in as this was a highlight. Breakfast was also very good. Highly recommended.

If you are booking this for a special occasion – DON’T! We were greatly looking forward to afternoon tea here, but it proved to be a huge disappointment. We were placed in a cold room with equally cold staff and cleaners surrounding us using the afternoon time to catch up on their work whilst we Were eating. This is obviously not their fault as they were obviously told to clean at this time but it made for a horrible atmosphere. When we complained to the management afterwards we were roundly dismissed. They ignored our complaints ensuring we will never return. Definitely a place to avoid.

Beautiful castle converted into a hotel. Reception staff showed us to room and around lounge/dining areas. The restaurant staff were also welcoming. The room (we had a suite) was amazing and the complimentary local sloe gin was a lovely surprise. Everything was clean and comfortable. Was expecting a castle to be cold but heating was on full and was very warm throughout. We had both dinner and breakfast. Limited choice if vegetarian (ie one dinner option) no alternative cooked breakfast, porridge or pastries being only option. I was expecting the gardens / grounds to be slightly bigger and although very pretty you can walk round in a few minutes. I expect the time of year we visited didn’t really help though. There is very little to see/do nearby so wouldn’t want to stay more than one night. It was a lovely one off experience, but definitely on pricy side.

On arrival, the hotel didn’t disappoint, it was a real castle, with our room occupying its own tower. The room was beautiful, and beautifully clean and well decorated considering it’s age. The only issue was the lighting in the room, it occasionally would turn itself on and off without out input? Spooky or loose wiring ? There was even a complimentary small decanter of Sloe GIn to enjoy. We had pre-ordered dinner, and asked to attend 30 mins before our dining time, we were provided a couple of canapies each whilst we had a drink before dinner. We’d opted for their six course taster menu on our first night with wine pairing at a cost of £165 each. The food was lovely & tasty but very little of it, with no carbohydrates so not good for me as diabetic. The service was delightful. On night 2, we opted for the 3 course Al la carte menu at £82. Again the food was very tasty, very little and not really suitable for my medical condition, so be prepared. Again, service was delightful. Breakfast was all table served, and you selected from a menu. You could choose several items from the continents side, cereals, pastries, toast, fruit etc, but only 1 item from the hot section. We chose the full English which consisted of a sausage, 2 bacon, 2 poached eggs (your choice of egg), a mushroom and 1/2 tomato. Overall it was a lovely hotel & experience, beautifully decorated and furnished, though a little expensive, but why not treat yourself. The only thing that was a surprise, and not in keeping were the BIC pens they hand you for signing? Their attention to detail was superb, but please Thornbury, get some better pens.

Beautiful old castle. We had the worse Sunday lunch ever, the vegetables were cold, Yorkshire puddings cold and very hard, and as for the beef, it was obviously the cheapest and toughest cut of meat. Our local pubs serve good hot food and with meat that is a joy to eat, and at a quarter of the price. At Thornbury Castle you are paying for the venue and not the quality of the food. Awful doesn’t truly describe how bad it was.

Visited here for Sunday lunch for the first time, menu has three choices for starter, main and Desert. The quality of the food is very good with a nice portion of Beef medium to Rare and a thick slice, roast potatoes were nice and crispy with veg booked in butter. the starters and deserts are good quality but small in portions size. The main dish is served on a board ad you have to put your own onto your plate, so you can choose what you like. Overall a nice experience although the venue can get cold so i would suggest something warm to wea. A 10% service charge is added to the bill

I went with my wife for Sunday Lunch having received a gift voucher from a friend. The castle and grounds are beautifully maintained. We arrived a bit early so we’re shown to a lounge where we were brought drinks. From the outset the staff were excellent, friendly and welcoming. We were shown into the dining room which was very nice. We ordered the valoute and ham hock terrine for starters and both were fantastic. The star of the show was the main course of thick cut beef with Yorkshire puds plenty of vegetables, really crispy roast potatoes and a super gravy. It was all piping hot and cooked perfectly. The deserts (lemon meringue cheesecake) were also really good. Throughout the meal we felt really welcomed and I cannot praise the entire experience enough.

I want to start by saying I don't usually give reviews but... Myself and a friend booked Thornbury Castle afternoon tea @ £35 per head. Fairly costly but justifiable as the hotel & surroundings are beautiful. The waitresses & service was good. The cakes & scones were delicious & the tea selection was varied. However, we were very disappointed when served sandwiches which were not quite as fresh as one would expect. After a polite word with our waitress, they were replaced and we were informed chef had ‘just made them for us’. I'm afraid this was clearly not the case as they were still quite dry on one side & cold which suggested Chef had not ‘just made them’ and they were from the original batch which was stored in the fridge. When this was pointed out, our waitress explained the bread is stored in the fridge. She then spoke to chef who said the sandwiches were ok. I've had several stays at this beautiful hotel, been for afternoon tea multiple times, had many family meals there including my 50 birthday lunch and I've never had reason to complain but I'm afraid someone needs to have a word with Chef as it is NOT ok to serve bread which has started to dry out. As my friend pointed out, Chef was not eating the sandwiches, we were & they certainly were not fresh. Our bill came to £77 -£7 was an added service charge which, under the circumstances, I felt needed to be deducted.

The setting is lovely and just what you might expect from a castle. We had a round table which was perfect for our party. Unfortunately the room was cold. We asked for additional heating or the heating to be increased and got a "certainly" response. Despite this request nothing changed - and we noticed as we were leaving the room so they could lay up for dinner that extra heaters were being brought into the room. It therefore felt like we were the poor relations and didn't deserve the extra heating. The food was average. I have had better afternoon teas in small local cafes. Overall not a good experience and I would not recommend.

I'm pretty incenced to be honest about the very, very poor service we had for the afternoon tea. I'm not remembering the quality of the food, or the beauty of the setting just the awfulness of my daughter's present being wasted by being ignored for almost the whole time. We were taken to the coldest, furthest room that had no lit fire until we were about to leave. We waited an age for the food. By the time it came our pot of tea was cold and almost gone. No one came back to offer more throughout our eating experience. I had to look for staff so we could leave. She was quite abrupt and rude with her response too. We were not having a free tea, we were very well dressed and were not rude. I do not understand why we were treated so. Four finger sandwiches and some cakes, with one pot of tea in a cold room is not enough value. Add the extremely poor service and I would advise anyone to go elsewhere. Very upset that we chose this venue for our treat.

Obviously pre-prepared underwhelming, sandwiches looked & tasted as though they’d been under cling film & in the fridge too long. Remainder of the cakes etc nothing special. Quite fancied some more tea but no one around to ask. In summary overpriced for the quality on offer and there’s a lot better around. Bought a voucher directly from the hotel website (As a gift) for afternoon tea. Roughly £25 per head so not a cheap deal. As another reviewer mentioned I A bit like the waitress treated us like we had purchased a discounted deal when the voucher was the same price as it would have been had we booked in the normal way. The cakes were very small as were the sandwiches. Also not many of either sandwiches or cakes per person. There was however a decent amount of coffee/tea. We were seated in a small room off the main dining area and only one other table of diners were in there. The other table left shortly after we arrived so were left alone in a rather dark silent room for most of the experience. Before we finished members of staff came in and started moving tables around and it felt a little like we were having afternoon tea in the storage cupboard. The atmosphere wasn’t particularly welcoming and for the amount of money spent I wish we had chosen somewhere else.

This was our fourth visit to Thornbury, the previous three all had the wow factor and nice additional touches for our Wedding Anniversary. This time took package to include 2 course evening meal and booked the bedchamber upgrade. We had also requested one of two previous rooms we have previously had only to be told that rooms are allocated on the day of arrival!! Why? We had made a specific request so surely if others have not requested then you can accomodate our request! Also two days before arrival get an email offering three upgrade options, why not, picked all three thinking one might be given, this was at extra charge, but fine.Quietly excited on arrival as my wife was not aware of upgrade email. At Reception immediately notified no upgrade! Again, why offer it then? Gutted, and to announce it to both of us was disappointing. Shown to room which was okay at first but below what we had previously experienced. Also on closer inspection the bed appeared to be falling apart at joints and the mattress so poor, so so soft, we fell into the centre when lying on it, we both ached next morning from the poor mattress. Also the evening meal, advertised at £45 each for two courses. Omg, how poor, would never pay that price if we knew what was being served we would have done B & B and gone into Thornbury to eat. We were presented with bread before the starter, two small half slivers when other tables were served two doorstep pieces! Were we getting less because we were on the package, we had to request more bread. The starters and main courses were so small, we were starving at the end!!Next morning, breakfast, full English was ok but seemed to be very dry, like left under a heater. Also we ordered coffee and were given a small pot between two. The contents only filled one and half cups, again had to request two refills, others in the room got large coffee jugs between two.We ended the break feeling second class citizens. We had said over the year's this would be our Wedding Anniversary venue, we are now searching for new hotel for 2020!You have gone down so far in our experience. Thought about writing to management but likely to fall on deaf ears!!

The worst meal we have had for a very long time. Goat's cheese turned to mush and forced through a piping bag; tough, almost inedible, roast pork with squidgy vegetables which had been kept warm for hours; a risotto which was like a tin of rice pudding warmed through with a few unripe tomatoes scattered on top....the list goes on. The dining room resembled a mausoleum and the service was slow with poorly trained staff (we watched a waitress opening a bottle of sparkling wine and spilling it over the table). Add to this the exorbitant prices and you have an altogether ghastly experience. A waste of a Sunday!

This afternoon tea was purchased through a gift scheme and bearing in mind there are many, many offers available for half the price we had high expectations. The tea purchased was £24.95 per person. The building and grounds have loads of character but for tea we were seated in a small restaurant area within a tower which, although unique, wasn’t the most pleasant area in the building for an afternoon tea. It was a character room but lacked ambiance and outlook. (The room alongside had large windows overlooking the lawn and there was also a lounge area, either of which would have made an excellent venue for tea). The tower room was also being used for lunches and it was mildly off-putting having the aroma of fish in the room. Again we felt it would have been preferable to have been seated in a different area. When we arrived in the room and were shown to our table we were told our voucher entitled us to afternoon tea, a little embarrassing as it made us feel as if we had some cheap deal when actually we were paying the same as everyone else! We were offered a choice of teas from a menu and this was served quickly. This was soon followed by the standard selection of finger sandwiches, scones and cakes. Having had several afternoon teas at various hotels we were disappointed at the average selection. Being a non chain hotel and charging almost £25 a head we expected a little more. The food was tasty and fresh but we couldn’t say it was any better than food we had been offered at half the price at other venues. No little touches like a sprig of greenery, a few crisps or a little salad to make it look nice. We also had to keep asking for top up tea as no hot water was provided and at one time we had to go and find a member of staff as there was nobody in the area. Despite this the staff were all very pleasant and helpful. We left feeling rather disappointed overall. We felt the experience didn’t reflect the cost and it could have been so much nicer. However there are not many places that offer such historical surroundings in which to partake afternoon tea and that alone sets Thornbury aside from most places!

We had chosen our food in advance from a limited menu and on arrival we were shown to a private dining room. The cold starters were small but very well presented and tasty. The main however felt like it had been sat waiting under a hot lamp for a while. The chicken was dry and tough and the roast potatoes had a thick chewy skin. The only veg was a minty pea purée that wasn’t particularly good. The deserts were good but the lack of sauce with a sticky toffee pudding was disappointing. I was there with friends for afternoon tea, baby shower celebration. There were around 12-15 of us in a separate booked room (paid for by my friend so I don't know the cost). We paid £25 each for Royal Afternoon Tea. The grounds were lovely as was the allocated room. I love historic buildings and this did not disappoint. There was a good choice of tea plus other drinks available. Hot water was provided on request and they were happy to provide more partway through the afternoon. The tea was hot and there was plenty of milk. But it was a shame that they were not using bone China- as this is what I had expected, especially for 'royal' afternoon tea! The sandwiches were very tasty. Lovely soft bread, delicious. The scones too were nice and they were happy to bring butter for those of us who didn't want the cream. The jam was disappointing, it looked and tasted very cheap and cheerful. But the most disappointing of all were the cakes. They were awful. They looked unappetising and were no better to eat. I make a fair amount of cake and I love homemade treats. I have also eaten cake in various cafes and restaurants all over the UK and these were the worst I have tasted. They just looked and tasted mass produced. They were tasteless. Several others in our group did not eat theirs. It was such a disappointment especially considering the cost. The waiting staff were pleasant and friendly, though I wonder if they were also busy with customers elsewhere as I didn't think they were as attentive

Food was extremely disappointing and the bread and butter pudding dessert a joke, it consisted of a thin slice of about an inch high and three long with a teaspoon sized scoop of sorbet.

A true English castle with a modern interior our bed room was named Anne Boleyn and was fabulous comfortable bed and furnished well. You need to be able to cope with stairs as there is no lift. Dinner and breakfast was excellent and Thornbury village is near for a walking visit. Staff are very friendly and helpful

We visited for Sunday lunch. Not a huge choice but what we had was absolutely delicious. The staff were very friendly. It’s 20 minutes from Bristol and we had never visited before. It’s a lovely historic building built during Henry 8th’s reign. The gardens were very pretty. Well worth a visit, even if you just pop in for a coffee.

We have just returned from a 3 night stay at the castle and what an amazing, relaxing time it was. Check-in was easy and the receptionist was very friendly. We had afternoon tea when we arrived which was very tasty. The grounds and surroundings are very relaxing. Our room had all the amenities one would require including Elemis toiletries, bath robes, slippers, iron/board, hairdryer, mini fridge in the cupboard and tea/coffee making facilities. The room was clean and the bed was comfy. Breakfast is magnificent with so much choice from Continental to full English. We had dinner two nights out of three. The food is very good but the dinner menu could get a little monotonous, especially if you are a fussy eater, as it only changes every three months. Pedro was an excellent waiter both in the restaurant and lounge area. All of the staff are very friendly and accommodating and nothing is too much trouble. We even ordered a pizza in one night from Domino's in Thornbury, which we ate in our room and the hotel were fine about this. Our whole stay was relaxing and we didn't want to leave. I would highly recommend this venue for an enjoyable time away from the rat race. I cannot speak highly enough of everything and every member of staff. I am looking forward to returning again one day.

We went here for our first Wedding Anniversary and had a lovely stay, the staff could not be more helpful and were very attentive beforehand and during our stay, they even gave us an anniversary card - a nice touch. We spent just one night and had a meal and breakfast there. The grounds are wonderful, very picturesque and not massive but worthwhile taking a few pics of. The food was nice, menu was limited but had a variety of options - don't expect large portions - but expect tasty food.

We stayed here with my sister and husband to celebrate a birthday. The hotel is fascinating and the staff were lovely. We particularly enjoyed a private tour of the hotel and grounds. Whilst breakfast was good, unfortunately the food in the restaurant was average and the service in the lounge not that good. Having said that, I'd certainly recommend a stay here to anyone who's interested in English History, especially if you're partial to the odd ghost or two :)

This establishment is superb for hotel stays (see my hotel review and 2k others on TA) and the restaurant is excellent. You can book here for dinner or incorporate this into an inclusive stay. They have an AA rating of 2 Rosettes. I have eaten in many AA 2 Rosette restaurants and Thornbury Castle leaves all of them far far behind in the dust. Come on AA - this should be 4/5 rosette!

We visited for a special birthday having booked easily online. My gluten intolerance usually means I miss out on a large proportion of menus but here, not only was almost everything on the menu available as specially prepared, there were alternative crudités and taster items. Lots of small touches which made it a special dining experience. My only grumble was a bit of a draft in the dining room. Thoroughly recommended for special occasions.

I went to Thornbury Castle for afternoon tea with my niece as part of her hen do. We had a private room beautifully set up and a separate room where all the food was laid out. The food was delicious and there was a good choice of cakes and savoury items. A couple of waiters kept coming in and offering teas and coffees and refilled everyone's cups. Some guests had champagne instead of tea and there were vegan /vegetarian options that were pre ordered. The cakes were amazing and I was full up (after eating probably far too much!). I would definitely recommend to others to try the afternoon teas, it was relaxed and unhurried and a nice way to spend an hour with friends and family.

I am, I have been told, quite a picky person, but could not find fault with this fabulous place. Everything about it was first class. The food, the location, the staff. My only gripe was that I was only staying there for one night, as would like to have tried other items from the menu.

Popped along with the view of afternoon tea to be treated by a tall skinny boy. Was given the most patronising and arrogant welcome. He seemed to get some sort of pleasure to boast how they are fully booked 4 or 5 weeks upfront. Shame really as nice grounds but shame they treat customers in such a rude manner. Will not be returning.

We have just dined here. It was not busy. We had the special lunch £25.75 for 3 courses. I had soup, about half a cup served in a huge dish. My main was sea bream, about 3oz, the smallest piece of fish I think I have ever been served with 1 tiny florette of broccoli, 2 1inch pieces of courgette, cold piece of seaweed and a potato rosti. I passed on a pudding. It was not busy but each course had a 30 minute or longer wait! My husband had same as me plus a pudding which was ginger with ice cream.......3 tiny tiny triangle's of gingersponge with a dollop of ice cream in the middle the size of a teaspoon!!! We haad 3 G and T's, lp 2 ciders and a bottle of red wine. 6 adults and one child bill was £237, castle is beautiful, gardens are too but the size of the food portions are miniscule. My daughter who is vegetarian had a risotto, it looked like a dish of porridge and tasted dreadful. Not recommended.

The staff were polite, friendly and professional and the surroundings appropriately baronial. Plenty of room for parking and a beautiful building. Now, the food. They did have a full vegetarian and vegan menu with some tasty dishes on, although the vegan menu particularly seemed to consist of leaving ingredients off the other menu. The food we had was nice. Nothing particularly special, certainly nothing we couldn't have cooked at home, but nicely prepared. The canapés and starters were as amusingly small as you'd expect and the main courses were probably a little more substantial than I thought they might be, but certainly not satisfying for someone who likes to eat a fairly big meal. If the price had been halved I'd have given this a very good or even excellent rating, but at £42 a head for two courses (not including sides and drinks) I wouldn't say it was good value for money or of a quality which matched the price tag.
