We often go to Thornbury and, this time, decided to go to The Wheatsheaf for lunch, as recommended by a lady in the "over-60s cafe". The Wheatsheaf is in a great location just off the High Street, a beautiful building, very clean, jolly staff, pristine toilets! Everything was great. My companion had the ham, eggs and chips (best chips ever!), and the portions were so large that he had to take some ham home in a plastic box (aka doggy bag). I had the chickpea curry (I would have preferred chicken but it wasn't available), Very tasty indeed. And I liked the fact that the beaming chef herself served us straight from the kitchen, still with her apron on! Lovely homely touch, I thought! Highly recommended!

After a long break from the Wheatsheaf kitchen, we had a very nice roast dinner today. Biggest regret was not taking some pictures for the review, of the roast brisket Sunday dinner! Extremely tasty, very good size with good selection (5) of very nicely cooked fresh veg. Fully recommend.

The sign outside says “Good food” but that is a massive understatement. The Sunday lunch (we had beef and pork versions) was phenomenal. Both meats were excellent quality cuts and were done to perfection, as tender as they come. The accompanying veg was lovely and flavoursome, not boiled to tasteless oblivion like some places. Nice touch was the extra gravy jug if needed. The place itself was lovely and traditional looking, with friendly and helpful staff. Value for money also excellent, I’ve paid more than double their prices for meals that were a tenth of the quality.

For the past few weeks we’ve thoroughly enjoyed our Sunday roast at The Wheatsheaf. The food has always been excellent, the veg fresh, the roast potatoes crispy and the homemade Yorkshire puddings are lovely. Today we had the belly pork roast, for a change, it was easily the best belly pork I’ve ever had, beautifully tender but the crackling was crunchy, as it should be. If you’re after a proper roast dinner, there’s no frozen, reheated rubbish here, The Wheatsheaf is absolutely the best place to go.

Can’t beat the Wheatsheaf, it is a good old-fashioned pub with a bar and lounge areas separated by a glass and wood partition. The food is great pub food with the best omelettes in Thornbury. It has a skittle alley and a pool room away from the bars. Some of the beer is a bit pricey compared to other Thornbury hostelries but worth it for the ambience of the pub. We hit the Wheatsheaf on a Saturday evening after we'd found other pubs shut their kitchens. It's an honest town pub, kept St Austell Tribute pale ale well, and had a straight-forward menu. It's not a foody pub, it's not a football-on-TVs- everywhere pub, it's got a petanque patch, a giant chess set and a thoroughly relaxed attitude. I felt at home there, and not out of place, as one can find in some small places. We had filled jacket potatoes with our choice of fillings. They were freshly cooked and not re-heated from days ago, and on a hot evening away from home, the Wheatsheaf shone. Oh, it's not desperately modern or quaint or <whatever>, it's an honest town pub. Another pub that could so easily be better but they start off with a very unimaginative menu. Chicken wings for a starter at £8 - not for me. Either it's a very large portion or grotesquely overpriced. Fish and Chips good. From a very limited list of puddings Belgian waffle and ice cream with maple syrup sounded the best - it wasn't as the texture of the waffle was like rather stale bread. I thought the lady so busy 'cleaning the tables' when so obviously busy listening to our clearly fascinating conversation was going to draw up a chair and sit down with us.

Rooms were very good. There was a bit of noise from the road but nothing to worry about. There were 4 of us and the ones who had steak were very pleased with it, another had the vegetarian burger which was very good (although there was no side salad, just burger and chips). I had the pie of the day (beef and mushroom) and was disappointed with it because it came sitting on what looked like steamed spinach, the only vegetable, so it went very soggy round the bottom plus the gravy didn’t appear to be “real gravy” although I was assured it was.
