What a little gem of a place.Table of 4 booked for their friday set lunch.Very good choices and are they were able to cater for my dietary requirements. Top that with a very friendly greeting and pleasant staff made it a day to remember and will go again.

Excellent service. Lovely food. Really good wine list. Perfect for long, slow celebratory meals. Comfortable, homely atmosphere. Local game available.

There was nothing too much to complain about really, the service was great, the food was nice and the venue was clean. For us we found both the food and venue old fashioned, and not somewhere where we would visit again. As said nothing wrong really, just not for us.

We visited one night for dinner with friends. Lovely, traditional British restaurant with great service, well presented delicious seasonal food. £70 a head for 3 courses with drinks, wine, coffee; you are given quite a few nice extras such as appetisers, mix of bread rolls, hand made sweets. Would definitely return.

Theobalds continues to maintain an excellent standard. Simon's food is so delicious and well presented, the waitresses are pleasant and Geraldine is perfect as front of house. Been coming here for many, many years and it never fails to impress. Today's lunch was exceptional. I don't know another restaurant to match it. PS - try the cheese souffle (Simon hasn't been able to remove it from the seasonal menu - there was an outcry when he tried and in sleepy Suffolk that says a lot!)

We were guests of our friends who had recently moved into the village. From the moment we arrived the service was impeccable. The restaurant has a warm homely ambience which was enhanced by the buzz of the customers enjoying Sunday lunch. Every course was absolutely delicious. I started with mussels in a rich smoked haddock & leek broth, followed by Gloucester Old Spot pork with salty crispy crackling & seasonal vegetables that were perfectly cooked retaining their natural colour with a little bite. For dessert the rice with poached rhubarb & stem ginger syrup was fabulous. We even some how managed to share 2 delightful East Anglian cheese boards between us. On top of this of special note are all the homemade flavoured mini bread rolls, croutons & petit fours. In summary this was one of the best meals I have ever had. We will certainly be coming back soon even though Theobalds is 50 miles from where we live.

Ate here last night with my husband celebrating our joint birthdays. The food was exquisite and one of the best meals I have ever eaten in the U.K. (and elsewhere). Prior to the meal we were served canapés - mushrooms in a filo pastry and a tiny tart. For starters I had poached Scottish Rope mussels with smoked haddock and a leek broth. It was simply delicious and an amazing combination of flavours. My husband had Oak smoked salmon with crabmeat picketed cucumber and avocado, He also said it was extremely good. For the main course I had roast lamb (cooked to perfection - medium as I requested) with a lamb casserole something like a Tagine - and my husband had partridge which he again said was excellent. We were also given 6 different bread rolls - the one I had very tasty. The accompanying vegetables were also perfect. For pudding (which I rarely eat but decided this had to be an exception) I had crème brûlée with coconut ice cream and my husband chocolate and orange fondant pudding. Both very good. The wine list is extensive, with wine available by the glass as well as bottles and reasonably priced. My husband had coffee and petit fours after. The whole meal came to around £120.00 and all though more than we would normally spend it was extremely good value considering the superb quality of the food. Having recently moved to Ixworth, we've been exploring the area bit by bit and looking out for restaurants that are a little different. Theobald's is certainly that and it reminds us of some family-run restaurants that we've encountered in sleepy South African dorps. Unbelievably, the husband and wife team have been running the restaurant for 40 years. Some dishes have apparently been on the menu since the beginning - the twice baked cheese souffle, for instance - and generally it resists the tide of change and concentrates instead on delivering a high standard of food that's immune to culinary pretensions. The cooking is classically French but isn't too heavy on cream and butter. Service is formal but unfussy, and the pacing of the courses suited us perfectly. Criticisms are few and far between: there's a tendency for meat and fish to be cooked a little too well, although an older than average clientele would probably appreciate that; French wines dominate the wine list and it would have been good to have had a crisper sauvignon blanc than those currently offered by the glass.

To celebrate friends ' birthdays that had happened during lockdown we went back to our favourite restaurant, Theobalds in Ixworth near Bury St. Edmunds. As usual the food was delicious. The price had gone up slightly but even so the restaurant was full that lunchtime. The owners who take the orders and the waitresses were fully attentive and as friendly as always. We were delighted that Theobalds had come through the UK lockdown relatively unscathed and hope we will continue to visit for many years in the future.

My husband and I visited once Theobalds opened after lockdown and the experience was second to none. We were greeted by Geraldine who took us directly to our table which looked immaculate. Service was attentive and the food was sublime with dishes looking and tasting excellent. All in all the best treat we could have wanted after a period of lockdiwn and uncertainty. Thanks to all for a perfect evening.

As we have come out of lockdown we had our Daughter's birthday dinner planned for Theobald's Restaurant. We weren't sure if it would happen but luckily Geraldine and Simon opened up this Saturday so we could still manage to have our celebration. We were worried if it would be ok or if the restrictions would prove too difficult. We needn't have worried as everything went so well. It was a lovely meal with great food as always and we were as well looked after as normal. All of our group thoroughly enjoyed the evening and keeps Theobald's at the top of our favourite restaurant list. Thanks to Geraldine, Simon and their staff for making it an evening to cherish.

Theobald's never fails to please. The menu is always interesting and the food superb. They smoke the salmon themselves, it is delicious. The service is great, the staff are lovely and overall they offer a great dining experience.

Our first visit to the restaurant, where we met 4 of our friends. Such a good experience from the moment that we opened the door, friendly staff who all understood their roles and a lovely old building with an excellent atmosphere. The food was so well prepared and presented, we will definitely revisit.

We had an unfortunate mis-booking at another restaurant. Geraldine graciously assisted us. Upon arrival the service was immediate and attentive. I had the duck liver terrine and my wife the Theobald’s oak smoked salmon or starters both far exceeded expectations. Then for mains she hat the turbot and I had a lovely serving of lamb. Honestly one of the best preparations I have ever had. For afters we both had the lemon tart which was sharp but perfectly balanced. It was truly a fortunate turn of events that landed us here. Can’t wait to return.

Visited over Christmas for a meal with my good lady, taster menu was glorious. As usual superb service, really great atmosphere and the food is to die for. Support these types of restaurants please they are a must in our little village’s

We were lucky enough to enjoy three meals here over the past month,eveything was a delight,from the first step into the attractive restaurant to the coffee and petit fours. A lovely seasonal menu,and impeccable table service. Looking forward to returning in 2020.

Had Christmas meals here for three years, always the same one vegetarian main dish option, a bland mixture of vegetables (with no protein) encased in filo pastry. Lovely ambience but vegetarians not really catered for, and if you are vegan, forget it!

Been coming here now and then for decades and it is as excellent as ever. Always make home made gluten free bread for us. Ridiculously cheap, 30 pounds for three course Sunday lunch, for some of the best cooking around. Please stay away so I can get a table!

We are fortunate to live in Ixworth where this lovely restaurant is situated. Simon and Geraldine have maintained a consistent high standard over the years, with superb seasonal menus. We have never been disappointed here, having brought many friends or dined as a couple. We’ve even held a special birthday party for family and friends which was outstanding and thoroughly enjoyed by all. There is something for everyone on the menu. You’ll receive a warm welcome and enjoy a terrific meal.

Worked here back in my day so know how amazing and home made the food is from breads to start and all the way up to the chocolates served with the tea and coffee.

Lovely welcome, cosy atmosphere, excellent presentation and delicious food. Service is very efficient and unobtrusive. In fact, a truely memorable and pleasurable experience. Our third visit and each one has been enjoyable. We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this delightful restaurant.

We stumbled across this restaurant by luck driving home to London from Norfolk. What a find! It is so rare to see such attention to detail, such a charming traditional atmosphere that is a true reflection of the owners and not some bland corporate affair. The food was delicious and very well prepared. I only had a small glass of wine but the wine list looked thoughtful and reasonably priced. We would definitely return and would happily make the detour again next time we happen to be near Bury St Edmunds.

Whenever we want a fabulous experience we always go to Theobald's. The atmosphere is cosy, the staff are very knowledgeable about the food they serve and are very professional.The food is excellent, being of a standard you would expect in a top London restaurant and at far more affordable prices. I would highly recommend this restaurant.

This was my first visit to Theobalds and despite living in the area for over 20 years, I did not know it existed.

First of all I will admit to being biased as I am a regular here but, that being said, Theobalds is a wonderful experience.

We go to Theobalds regularly and in fact I had my 70th birthday lunch there for all the family. Simon is a talented chef and Geraldine runs a friendly and service orientated front of house. The food is always top quality and I highly recommend the place. We had a very enjoyable Christmas Day lunch at Theobalds last December which was top notch.

Six of us went out on Saturday for a meal recommended by one of the party , from the outside it didn’t look much but it was dark , on entering the restaurant we were met with a warm and friendly greeting and asked to sit in the bar area where we were given a menu and ordered drinks a little bonus arrived in the shape of some canapés which were very nice, inside is a typical 16th century decor with open beam walls and beamed ceilings.

I have read several reviews commenting on the dated decor,its a beautiful old building which is very clean and tidy get over it more to the point the food!!!!! The food is fantastic did this months taster menu for valentines which was superb. This chap is a proper chef and the food is very well done. The front of house is run by his wife who is lovely. It’s a proper proper restaurant run by two dedicated food professionals worth a visit anytime enjoy it.

Having lived in Mid-Suffolk for 35 years, which is a desert for fine dining. We have recently moved to Gt. Barton and have found that we now have access to a number of fine dining establishments.

Excellent meal & service for our first visit on Friday. Food interesting, nicely cooked & presented, only minor criticism was that the lamb was a little on the small side, perhaps that's because it was so nice that those that had it wanted more! Service couldn't be faulted, didn't have to be asked "who ordered what" and that's always a good sign.

Exceeded our expectations. Decor a bit dated but that's the only minor thing that was not perfect. Service and food was really very good and menu choice was excellent. Will definitely return.

This husband and wife team run a superb restaurant. The warm welcome with possibility of a pre-prandial drink by the fire before going to the dining area started the evening well. The food was superb with delicious baked souffle for starters, turbot and partridge for main courses and rice pudding for dessert. Home made breads and petit fours. This was a quality meal and thank you.

Loved our evening out at this restaurant which I’d never visited before. From the moment we were greeted at the door to be seated by the roaring fire to my last sip of coffee it was perfect.

Came here with my elderly parents and sister and brother in law. Welcome was warm and we were seated by the bar next to a welcoming log fire. Canapés were delicious... one very minor moan was no draft beer but that’s understandable in a small restaurant.

A second visit this year, this time with a party of seven friends and the food, service and value was again first rate. How do Simon and Geraldine do it?

What a fantastic meal we had at Theobalds! Ambience, service & food all excellent. Well priced for a meal of such quality. Mussels starter followed by sirloin & creme brûlé for me & my wife had smoked salmon & crab followed by lamb & bavoir. Meat cooked exactly as we asked. Excellent bottle of Sancerre, too. Will definitely return.

Sometimes it's just great to have a special meal in a special place - and that's what we had at Theobald's. A small, family restaurant that has been in existence for almost 40 years is a rarity, but they just get it right. The food is excellent, as is the service, without it being fussy. From the welcome and the canapés to the 3 course meal, you get marvellous taste sensations. At around £100 per couple, including drinks and tip, it may not be your normal cheap & cheerful but, for a special occasion, it's fabulous. (One word of warning - despite being listed as a Bury St Edmund's restaurant, it's actually a £15 cab ride away)

Myself and my partner have eaten at Theobalds a few times over the years Sunday lunch and evening meals and with my brother in laws 60th birthday coming up we knew the perfect place to go it’s a fantastic restaurant off the beaten track with a very cosy warm atmosphere the staff and front of house were excellent very attentive and the food was scrumptious and not overpriced we all loved our evening at Theobalds and would recommend this little gem to everyone

I had passed this quirky-looking restaurant when visiting the village last year and made a mental note of trying it one day. Our wedding anniversary seemed like the perfect occasion. The snug bar with enormous fireplace is the ideal setting for a pre-meal aperitif. The actual restaurant is far bigger than it looks from the outside, a veritable tardis. The service is superb, with the tasting menu dishes arriving at perfect intervals. As for the food...this was one of the best meals out we have ever had. The smoked salmon was elevated to a new level by a delicious lime and cucumber coulis; the smoked haddock and mussels were excellent; the scallops cooked with chilli and spring onion were sensational. I'm not sure that our main courses - lamb and halibut respectively - needed all the vegetable side dishes but by then we were in seventh heaven anyway. A sensational evening's dining. And a welcome/service to match.

We went for a family meal and we weren't disappointed! Very high standard of service and very attentive staff. Food was presented well and tasted fantastic. It was a lovely atmosphere and we will definitely be returning. Thank you for such a lovely evening.

I came across this restaurant slightly randomly when I'd left booking a mother's day lunch for my mother until a little late, and they happened to have a table available. It has become a family favourite, the default venue for 3 generations of our family for birthdays, anniversaries - and those mothering sunday meals.

We have visited this restaurant many times over the last 30 years and it is one of the best restaurants we have visited in this area We have never been disappointed , always excellent food all cooked fresh by the lovely Simon and perfect Service with a smile from Geraldine, lovely homemade bread rolls included in the price as are the homemade sweets served with the coffee We went a couple of weeks ago and had the taster menu for the first time and this was excellent . Pre dinner drinks outside in the lovely courtyard garden was an added bonus. Restaurant area has recently been refurbished with new curtains and tableware which gives a lovely fresh look without taking away from the character of the building .

Hadn’t been here for years. Service good but overall the menu is dated and disappointing. Really basic and uninspiring unless you like plain British food.

Food was nice, place was clean and of good standard and service was great, only thing i would say is it is of high price range and the selection on menu is unique and abit too posh for a village we feel.They did however accommendate for a gluten free person well with little homemade rolls etc. We had a great time. It was the first time we tried it out as had recently moved into village.we havent yet been back as it is abit too old fashioned for us in food choices,style of place and the prices.

We visited this Restaurant as a guest of my cousin on a visit from Cheshire. Could not believe a place like this could exist outside a large City. The minute we walked in we had a warm welcome by Geraldine the perfect hostess. Nothing was too much trouble and her explanation of the menu made me want to try every dish. The tables were nicely spaced apart and the settings elegant. When the food arrived it was everything you would want from a quality Restaurant, presentation on the plate appealing and the flavours superb. Especially liked the vegetables being served separately.

Had a perfect birthday evening spent in Theobald's. As soon as I walked in I instantly felt welcomed and from then on the whole experience was lovely. The food was gorgeous and the best I have had in a long time. The waitress service and hosts were so attentive and we were lucky enough to be able to go outside into the prettiest courtyard garden.

Just returned from a wonderful evening meal. This was our first time here,and boy all the five star reviews are truly accurate. Due to a medical condition, my wife is unable to eat more than one course at a meal. I telephoned in advance to check that this would be ok, as it is usually a three course menu,. I was assured that this would be no problem.

Comfortable, intimate 30 seat restaurant with crisp white linens, Villeroy & Boch crockery, excellent friendly service and beautifully cooked and presented food. And excellent value.

We found this restaurant after our original restaurant had to cancel our reservation at short notice.

We've eaten at Theobalds before, but this was the first time that we had seen the option for a taster menu. Either 4 or 5 courses, I initially tried to be careful and go for just the 4, but then couldn't resist having the sweet. It was all delicious and very well balanced. Next time you go, give it a try, but go with likeminded friends as the whole table needs to eat from the taster menu.

Theobalds has always been a favourite due to Simon's wonderful cooking and Geraldine's hospitality. This month has seen an amazing change to new stylish decor - curtains, carpets, tables, settings; even a new authentic beamed wall. Great atmosphere - you need to book ahead as it is very popular.

Every time we stay in Ixworth we have to visit Theobalds. This is such a special restaurant.

Great restaurant. The food is fantastic, especially the calves liver, very tender and perfectly cooked. Wine list is good and fairly priced.

A family occasion (birthday) so we were looking for a memorable meal - and we got one. All dishes very well prepared and presented/ good wine list and attentive efficient service. Prices were pretty favourable as well.

Decent enough venue but lacking atmosphere. Pleasant and attentive staff. Lack of quality spirits and a dull wine list. Tad dismayed that the choice was a three course menu , could not opt for two courses and pay a lower rate.

Birthday Sunday Lunch. Friendly and efficient service. Excellent food and wine. The starters were all attractively presented and of high quality. The roast beef and fish dish were both. delicious

Second time eating at Theobald's , last time was 20 years ago and the owners have kept up the same charm , quality of dishes and service as I remembered last time I was there .

The card says business started by chef and his wife in 1981-36 years ago!, and are a bit stuck in a time-warp...............

We booked into the Theobalds as part of a visit to Bury St Edmunds and was not disappointed. The three course meal was a very good deal and they had a good choice of excellent wines.

What can I say. Superb food and wine every time!! Amazing flavours, meat always done to perfection. Roast beef on Sundays is wonderful. Always my first choice. So good you have to book. Service very professional and made to look so easy.

La visita de un jueves por la noche con amigos. Al entrar en el restaurante acogió calurosamente y nos ofrecieron una bebida y canapés de cortesía. Nos llevaron a una mesa maravillosa frente a a un patio con una vista a una hermosa terraza amurallada, perfecto para una noche cálida veranos. Todos optamos por salmón y cangrejo que empezar así como deliciosos estaban perfectamente presentado. Yo opté por un plato de pan frito terneros hígado mientras mis amigos eligió el pescado y platos de pato. Todos llegaron con una variada selección de verduras y el hígado era el mejor y más tierno que he dormido que recuerdo haber tenido, igualmente mis amigos todos comentaron sobre la calidad de sus platos. La comida fue concluido con postres en mi caso bavarois de chocolate blanco y oscuro, absolutamente delicioso. El servicio durante toda la comida era perfecto. Estoy seguro que volveremos muy pronto para probar el menú degustación de 6 platos!

Fantastic as always - Twice baked cheese souffle starter is the way to go in my book, the rest of the meal was equally superb. I think you'll be hard pushed to find a better restaurant locally. Its Fab.

Queríamos un lugar diferente y especial y Theobolds muy contentos de seleccionados. El saludo fue perfecta con bebidas antes de la cena para seleccionar de un menú variado. Elegimos el menú mediterráneo ligero aunque había un menú de degustación. Las comidas eran un precio fijo por tres campos.

Una noche excepcional, dos comidas de primera clase (hicimos elecciones diferentes), excelente servicio, ambiente excelente, a un precio razonable. El chef es un maestro en su oficio.

I have never eaten a better venison dish in my life -- it was cooked to absolute perfection. Coupled with a very friendly service and a calming atmosphere, I found it to all be faultless.

Simon's cooking is first rate; can't recall a better meal. Have been visiting for 30 years and it's always excellent. Geraldine as front of house is the perfect hostess. Lunching there today - can't wait.

La comida es deliciosa, en especial en el caldo de marisco y el cordero, así como los deliciosos canapés poco para empezar. El servicio es siempre excelente y recomiendo encarecidamente que le da una oportunidad. El restaurante como otros comentaristas es 'antiguo', sin embargo el ambiente es genial y como una pareja joven, siempre disfruto comer aquí como una alternativa a un restaurante de cadena aburrido en la ciudad. We have eaten at Theobalds many times and never been disappointed. The menu is always interesting, the food beautifully cooked and well served, while the price is very reasonable. One of Suffolk's best small restaurants. Try it and see: you won't be disappointed.

Fuimos allí el viernes (9 de diciembre) en un grupo de 16 para el almuerzo. Toda la experiencia fue muy bien logra con excelente servicio y buena atención a los detalles. Con tan muchos de nosotros nos habían pedido que pre-orden y la comida llegaba a la gente adecuada con la que pedimos no". . . ". La comida en sí era deliciosa, especialmente la crème brulée con helado de avellana. Sin duda lo recomiendo para el fino servicio y excelente comida.

Esto es muy bueno, un restaurante de gran calidad. El equipo de marido y mujer han creado una experiencia culinaria y son apasionados de todo lo que hacen, a pesar de hacerlo por 35 años! El restaurante es impecable (como es la cocina). La comida y el servicio superó nuestras expectativas. Será probar el menú degustación de 5 platos la próxima vez! Sin duda merece una visita pero recomendaría reservar con antelación.

Este restaurante fue recomendado por nuestro hotel y ciertamente vale la pena visitar. Por fuera parece bastante simple, pero una vez entras es un ambiente maravillosamente para comer. Amigos que comer con nosotros en nuestra última visita también elogió lo que un gran restaurante. Acogedor, gran ambiente con un poco de jardín. Altamente recomendado.

Había oído cosas buenas acerca de la calidad de la comida en este restaurante, así que pensé que le daría una oportunidad. Yo tenía el menú degustación, que consistía de canapés y dos entrantes poco, plato principal (yo opté por el pescado sobre el cordero). Todo sabía un poco lo mismo que el último curso, nada realmente se levantó y aunque era un menú degustación, me pareció que las raciones eran demasiado pequeños para justificar la etiqueta de 100 libras + precio. Aunque el lugar no estaba lleno, el personal nos hizo sentir muy de prisa. No volvería y no lo recomiendo, me temo. En mi opinión, el lugar necesita un lavado de cara bueno, tanto en el restaurante y el menú.

Lugar para comer. Toda la experiencia fue excelente, teniendo el hecho de que tardamos casi 15 minutos en encontrar un lugar para aparcar, lo que significaba tener que caminar de regreso al restaurante. Aparte de eso la recepción fue justo, servicio rápido y eficiente, pero no apresurado. La comida era excepcional y una fantástica relación calidad-precio; sin duda un fino con un presupuesto!

My partner took me here for dinner a week ago. The service was immediate and faultless, and so was the food. The decor was a little dated - but it didn't matter, we loved it!

Nuestra noche realmente agradable en Theobald empezó con una bebida antes de la cena en el salón (con carácter inglenook), antes de que nos fuimos a la sala de comedor con vigas. Recommended by a work colleague I shall have to thank him on Monday. An absolute delight from start to finish. I particularly loved the halibut and my wife the crem brûlée but everything was divine. We will definitely be returning.
