NOW PERMANENTLY CLOSED :-( The Plough at Rede is one of Suffolks best kept secrets. A thatched pub with oak beams, an open fire, all tucked away in the tiny hamlet of Rede. Stunning location, fabulous atmosphere with a warm welcome and the best food for miles around. Brian and Joyce have been running the Plough for over 30 years with customers returning time and time again. Ide give 100 stars if I could.

We dined on the first Sunday of the reopening of the Plough under new management. Not a great experience unfortunately. My husband was unable to eat his beef as it was mostly fat. Some vegetables arrived a few minutes after the mains, others, as listed to be included with our meal, we had to ask for and they eventually arrived when we had almost finished our meal. The plates weren’t hot so our food went cold very quickly. It all seemed rather chaotic and we felt it was terribly overpriced for what we had. I see that The Plough has been closed again due to fire regulations and I sincerely hope they do reopen and attempt to get back to the standard set by the previous owners as we love the pub and have always had great food here in the past.

Such a shame when a brilliant pub gets new owners and becomes absolutely appalling we arrived to grumpy face and he could find our reservation we were given our drinks and had to get our own menus to look at we then sat waiting for our starters which took an hour to arrive mine was awful offered no extra drinks the main course was good but another another long wait the owner so grumpy and didn’t once come check on us to see how everything was then he left one waitress there and went home absolutely appalling I would strongly advise not going there

We saw Rede on the TV ages ago and the other half decided we needed to explore this quaint looking village. After a visit,a few weeks ago, to the plant centre nearby we popped in for a drink. On entry the menu board is prominently displayed and seeing seabass on the menu prompted an evening booking for this weekend. On arrival we were greeted by the landlord and his lady, drinks were served and we ordered starters and mains. We were directed to our table which gave us views over the front and back gardens. It was very quiet with one other couple who explained they came every weekend for a meal from a fair distance, so I'm thinking " this should be a good experience then".....and I wasn't disappointed. Our starter arrived. I had ham hock terrine which came with a generous amount of toasted crusty bread and was delicious and Paul had a mountain of whitebait, which he thoroughly enjoyed. Our plates were cleared by a very young waitress and our main course arrived a few minutes later. The aforementioned seabass on a bed of pasta and Stilton chicken with boiled new potatoes and vegetables. All cooked just right. The chicken fell from the bone and the seabass was so fresh he could taste the sea! By then the other tables were all filled and the two waitresses looked after us all with a professional calm and friendliness which is becoming a rarer and rarer. We chose a "junkyard" and a cheesecake for dessert which we shared, and then coffee. Macy our young waitress was attentive without being intrusive and we enjoyed our meal very much. The offer of a second cup of coffee was a nice touch. I understand that the landlord has been at the pub for 40 years! And the building is early Tudor. I cannot wait to return and would highly recommend you try this pub for yourself. It's old fashioned building houses some very exceptional staff, a landlord who knows his job and the food is out of this world. Ten stars🌟!

Intimacy, romance, character, quality…this place delivers on every level. With the frost outside and burning fires within, every element combines to create atmosphere & impact. Few pubs have all the ingredients to create memories - I’ve experienced just a handful, but know the score - and this one certainly does just that. A decent menu, excellent cooking, simple but delicious food…Add in the stories of the ghosts who allegedly sit alongside you and a night to remember is guaranteed.

We were on holiday in the area in July and booked for Sunday lunch, the only negative comment is that like many Uk establishments they have not realised that particularly on a Sunday people do not always want to eat between 12 and 2.30 on a Sunday, particularly in the summer. That said we had a superb meal, freshly cooked and well served by staff who were working hard and conscious of social distancing requirements. If you have the option to sit outside behind the pub I would take it, they have an excellent garden which really comes into its own in the good weather. The pub inside is great too though with lots of character and as said excellent food. We would gladly return if in the area again.

Previous visits always left me unsatisfied in as far as the menu board always promised so much but never really delivered. Not now, the menu board promised great things & delivered in spades. Although not on the board Brian checked that there was black pudding available. Having heard the black pudding fritters were "good" & available that was my choice. Excellent, what a starter. Tempura prawns were superb with generous portions all through. We enjoyed the Somerset pork with pasta, everyone else went for fish in various forms, all excellent. Puds were enthusiastically consumed, no chance of leaving this homely pub hungry. Good selection of well kept beers, especially having found beer from one of my favourite breweries Ringwood. That in itself will bring us back. A really enjoyable interlude in this out of the way traditional English pub, thoroughly recommended

Love that there is no website and the menu is on the chalk board, traditional and welcoming. Black pudding fritters were AMAZING, as was the Crab au gratin and Confit duck - homemade and good size portions. We treated ourselves to dessert which again, we could not fault - creme brûlée and banoffee pie. There is a large fire which is lovely. Well worth the visit, you won’t be disappointed! This must be everyone’s idea of the perfect village pub. Tucked away in the middle of nowhere, but not far from Bury St Edmunds, the Plough exudes atmosphere and welcome from the moment you walk in. Good beers on hand pump, excellent choice of wines and amazing service from a lady who buzzes round doing everything. The food menu is on a blackboard by the bar and, having eaten there several times now, all our experiences have been good. Refined home cooking is how I would best describe it - our choices this time were a rabbit casserole and a monkfish creole- the latter in a spicy cream sauce with pasta and crayfish tails - delicious. Whatever you choose you won’t be disappointed. Full marks quality value and service.

We have eaten at the Plough several times over the years but I was slightly disappointed last week .I had the sirloin steak ,which was very nice but the chips let the meal down. They were crispy on the outside but when you cut through one it oozed mushy mashed potato .To be honest,I have never had chips like them .They didn’t seem like normal chips.Drinks are rather expensive too,£2.50 for a small soda and lime seemed a tad ott.

Been to this pub several times. It’s the perfect British pub; old style tavern, good booze selection and a great choice of food. Particularly good for cold or wet days (and it has a lovely fire place). Worth the trip to Rede just for this place.

Not been here for a while, nice to see same friendly hosts and the fab menu, the black pudding fritters definitely a must have! The crayfish and avocado was fab too! I had the new Sunburst chicken with mango sauce...so so good! (Keep it on menu please!) Mum had Figgy pork with chestnuts, beautiful rich sauce and she said best pork dish she's had in a long time. Also veg perfectly cooked. This pub has great ambience and very friendly.

I met a group of friends for dinner just before Christmas. The food was excellent, and the staff was extremely friendly

We have eaten at The Plough regularly since mpoving into the area 10 years ago. The quality, and indeed quantitiy, of the food has never been wanting. Everything we have ever ordered has been cooked and presented at an exceptionally high level. Our experience makes me marvel at Dawn Haverhill's comments about frozen steaks. To the contrary meat and fish has always been fresh tender and tasty never have we experienced what I would even begin to question might be frozen.

Everything a country pub should be. Four of us went for lunch and sat at a lovely table by the fire. Well kept Doom Bar and Adnams and a good selection of wines by the glass. Extensive blackboard menu from which we chose prawn and crab cocktail, black pudding fritters, chicken cacciatore, napoleons beef (in a creamy sauce) and fish and chips. All arrived promptly and was much enjoyed. Amazing service from just one lady who seemed to do everything, drinks, order taking, food service etc. - and they were quite busy. Would certainly visit again.
