Excellent Sunday roast in a proper country pub. Staff were friendly and inviting. Price was good for the quality as we have had many Sunday roasts at other restaurants in the area that are not a patch on this one. Would definitely return. I could tell they have regular customers from within the village who were rather annoying to listen to bragging to each other throughout our meal but I guess they are the regulars and that’s what keeps this lovely pub going. We will definitely recommend

This hidden gem just off the main road is a traditional village pub filled with hunting, memorabilia near to Spurstow. We dropped in on the off chance they might have a table for an early dinner. There were plenty of spaces which made it a little quiet to start with however, it soon became busy. The food was delicious mainly typical pub fare but good portion sizes. The staff were attentive and efficient.

Went here a few months ago and was slightly concerned about the amount of fox hunting paintings on the walls. I asked the management if they supported the local hunt, they said "no", but the awkwardness of their answer I suspected different. I went there for an early lunch yesterday (23rd December 2023), low and behold the local fox hunt were meeting there, so they lied to me. Avoid this place if you respect wildlife.

Lovely garden terrace. Fantastic menu and really gorgeous food. The staff are friendly. A real gem hidden in the beautiful Cheshire countryside. My only suggestions would be 1. The outside area bar should be stocked with drinks 2 live music once a week during the summer outside as would create a buzzy atmosphere. 3. Swings for children would attract more families.

We met up with some friends a couple of Sundays ago and decided to try The Yew Tree in Spurstow. it was a lovely pub and the staff were welcoming with lovely open fires. However after a time we did notice something. There were two male managers on that day. One we believe to be called Sam, and the other Pedro. Out of the two it was clear to see that Sam spoke to everyone equally, where as Pedro was selective and actually blanked some people who looked to be regulars. I have to say looking at their faces it did not go un noticed.

Just had to take the time to write a quick review about the yew tree, we arranged to meet some friends for an annual post Christmas get together, 15 of us in total a mix of couples and small children, we spent a few hours locally and I’d booked a table the day previously, on arrival we we’re greeted and shown though to our own private dining area! Perfect! We spent 3 hours there in total, food, drinks and deserts. No issues, all food arrived hot and together, we had a wonderful afternoon and felt really happy and comfortable whilst there. Thankyou.

Booked this for dinner by telephone as their online booking service said there was no availability and we couldn’t find anywhere else in the area. Overall we were very pleased with our choice - food quality was good with the nibbles and starters, squid with coconut and a beetroot and apple salad, being described as excellent and heavenly. Service was both friendly and efficient without being intrusive. Prices were reasonable. Only downside was the noisy and crowded bar area just next to where we were sitting and it was obvious that all the care that was taken with Covid precautions for restaurant users didn’t apply to the bar area and its Friday night drinkers

We booked a table at the Yew Tree on what must be the hottest day of the year!!! We understand social distancing etc but on arrival were told no available tables outside. Ok benefit of the doubt people arriving after us must have asked to be seated outside. If that is the case it would have been nice to be given the option in booking. However one cannot but wonder if it’s not what you know rather than who you know!! I really cannot fault the food at the Yew Tree, what we had was excellent. Unfortunately having decided to take the chancellor’s offer of half price food I was absolutely astounded to be charged £19.00 for two large glasses of wine!!!!! I expect these prices in London but not in the village of Bunbury where I have never paid this extortionate price before!! In case people think this s sour grapes I have lived in this village for 34 years and support all the businesses here but will not be taken advantage of!!

We actually ended up going to the Dysart Arms last week thinking that was the one, but it wasn't. (Food is MUCH MUCH better here)!!!!!!! We both had the steak pie with chips. Best chips I have had in a long time. The pie as well was absolutely beautiful. Melt in your mouth, not chewy at all and the pastry was not heavy and sickly. The gravy tasted so flavoursome like they had actually used vegetables, herbs extra and not just bisto! We were really impressed and would definitely come here again. We visited this pub local to us on Friday 17th for a family birthday.Unfortunately we clashed with the Pecforton shoot who took over the car park and the pub. If you enjoy a rowdy experience with loud Hooray Henry's then this was the night for you. Unfortunately I don't and clashed with one extremely rude man who had parked badly and was very sarcastic as I tried to park. There was only one chef on apparently and whilst the food was ok- the chips were different sizes and therefore some were cooked and some weren't.It needs some tweaking and controlling the drunken bums would be great.Perhaps if you are going you should phone and check they aren't there as I have heard good reviews but we obviously went in the wrong night.I have emailed the pub but as yet have not had a reply.Pity as this could be our local but there is a less rowdy option.....

For drinkers, the beer is excellently kept, there is an interesting gin menu and the wine list is improving. Thankfully the Yewie has re-opened after a tasteful makeover and with Sam and Ped providing the continuity. Pleasantly surprised by the excellent range of beers and a fine selection of wines and spirits. Visited on the inaugural Saturday lunch session and had a mix of generously portioned nibbles: drumsticks, whitebait and goats cheese bon-bons. I had a delicious beef pie & chips (no skimping on the meat!) and my wife had a fish finger butty. Sensibly the menu has been limited whilst in the start-up phase but there’s a good choice of dishes suitable for both lunch and dinner and please to see so much of the menu sourced from local producers. As I said the portions are generous without compromising quality so no room for a dessert - maybe next time as we’ll definitely be back!

We booked a table for dinner with friends one Saturday evening. We were shown to our table and given menus. The first thing we were told was that there was no sea bass. Then the waitress returned to say there was no steak either! This meant the mixed grill was not available either, it was a small menu to start with and no specials board which didn't leave us with a lot of choice. The rose wine we chose was not chilled. Two of us chose cod, which was tiny when it arrived on a bed of greens, it looked like a child's portion and cost £14.95. My friend chose a pie, which came on a plate with greens, but no chips or potatoes, and when she asked about it, she was told she would have to pay extra!! We all thought this was terrible, especially as it was £13.95, and the chips would have been another £3.50! we said we were not happy about that and she was brought a bowl of fries for no extra cost. I should think so!! The food was good and tasty but these other issues spoiled the evening. We all expected it to be better. Wouldn't go again.

A good range of casks beers from Weetwood together with Timothy Taylor’s Landlord which was excellent. My wife ordered a simple dish of fish and poached egg on spinach. What she received was a masterclass of how to cook fish, she loved it.

A new place today for lunch. Nice little country pub. A lot bigger inside than it looks from outside. Seated quickly as it was quiet. Chose a nice little table by the patio doors as it was a pleasant day. The lady member of staff that looked after us throughout was so lovely. I had a steak pie with chips peas and kale and my father had salmon. He said the salmon was nice. My meal tasted very nice indeed. The gravy however was like water and the pie was disappointing as it only had three little cubes of beef in it. The rest was carrots. I would have called it carrot pie with a bit of beef. The taste was nice and the chips were nice. A cheese board to finish looked very nice. I didn’t partake but there was Plenty I would say for two people. Nice place to visit because of staff.

This is our local & it’s been amazing since it re opened & was at its best when Sam took over just before Christmas. Sadly with them being told to leave it’s gone completely down hill with no atmosphere, staff all leaving & very quiet sadly the wrong decision was made. - wouldn’t recommend now.

Things have been a bit high and miss at the Yew Tree, but this weekend the Sunday lunch was superb. Great value 2 or 3 set courses and children’s menu. The Sunday lunches were how Sunday lunches are supposed to be. Great meat, lovely sides and vegetables and different gravy for different meats. Lovely service too. It’s back to how it should be food wise.

Even though we live a good 80 miles away we always love coming here on a warm summers day ! It's a super little country pub, tucked away down a little country road. It's a bit of a hidden gem, never too busy ! We always enjoy sitting out in the garden, enjoying a pint of local ale or a gin ! We've had food here on a couple of occasions and can't fault it, whether it's a Sunday roast or a sandwich or some sharing nibbles they have never disappointed. Such a great pub !

Stopped on the off chance today for lunch. No one else was in the pub, which was surprising. The two ladies one serving and one at the bar were really friendly and made us feel so welcome. I had a delicious club sandwich with fries and my husband had small portion fish and chips which look delicious too. It was not quite warm enough to sit outside but on a summers lunchtime or warm evening it would be a nice place to have a drink. We will be back with our children.

after my first review almost a year ago, the Yew tree has a new owner. It is the owner of Chester Racecourse. Initially Chloe was the manager, but was let go just before Christmas 2018 after her probation period. Told she did not have what is needed to take the business further and they need someone new to move it on. A fantastic decision was made to recruit Sam! He is people friendly and has a great rapport with the customers. He turned the pub around and it became a busy country pub with a great atmosphere. People followed him from other pubs in the area and business was on the up. We had a massive shock, when we went on Saturday 13th April, we were told that he too had been let go!! A note to the business owner, you may know how a Chester city pub runs, you have a lot more foot fall with tourists , but you do not get the same volume in the country. You can't make people eat if they don't want to. Sam promoted the new menu and the chef is very good at his job. I feel that you have just taken the heart out of the Yew Tree. Time will tell if the business improves or fails.

Called in late Monday afternoon for a meal in a place that we hadn't visited for several years. Very surprised that it wasn't busy on a lovely day but we gave it a try. Service was very friendly and helpful. The menu is fairly wide and we were delighted to see the offer of two people being able to order 2 courses with one eating free, this is Monday only but a great deal. Food was fresh and very well cooked. Steak and ale pie was particularly good. Drinks were also on a 20% reduction for "happy hour" ,again by a fortunate chance, so we left very happy. Happily by the time we left the place was becoming busier as it is an excellent local pub that deserves to succeed.

I go back a few years with this place where it was a nice country pub but it had many landlords that ran it into the ground and no clear identity.

Since here some 3 years ago the place has been renovated and clearly much attention has been paid to the decor, comfort and services. Friendly welcome, very good beer selection, well kept and served, there's nothing not to like about the place. Sadly we didn't get to road test the food this trip but the menu looked good and I'll be keen to sample it next time around. Well worth visiting.

We visited The Yew Tree on our way to Peckforton Castle and thoroughly enjoyed our lunch there. Service and food were both excellent, particularly the chicken liver parfait, which was amazing. The moules and frites was superb, with the best and most garlicky sauce we have ever tasted. The pub is tastefully decorated, but the absence of a disabled access toilet is very disappointing, especially as the main toilet is totally unsuitable for wheelchair users. All in all a very enjoyable experience, and one we will definitely repeat when we are in the area again

Average food more like a pub, raw onion in the scotch egg bhaji, bang bang cauliflower poor, fish and chips were tiny and fish dry. So over priced for below average food.

This place has a vast amount of things for children to play on. However don’t expect to get food quick- they have two cage areas but one is never open and the other has a constant huge queue because the staff take forever! Even if you want drinks you have to queue with the food and last time we queued for 25 minutes! Ridiculous when you have children to supervise and feee!

Food has got expensive, on the website states paninis £7.75, when the actual price in the cafe is over £10. We had 2 paninis and a pot of tea, the bill came to over £27. We use the cafe on a regular basis, but will be giving it a miss from now.

The most appalling 'meal' and service that I have ever been subjected to. We ordered steak and ale pie and this was brought out to us and placed on our table and described as a pie. However, there was absolutely no pastry, just a bit of gravy in a dish. When I called the waiter back he said 'to be honest, we've ran out of pastry' - are these people for real? To add insult to injury, the manager actually tried to charge us for the pies we never received!!!! Shambolic and not for the first time, but definitely for the last. DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME/MONEY!!!!

We stopped off here for early dinner after a day at Quarry bank mill. We hadn’t pre booked and they managed to fit us in. Friendly service and the food was wonderful! I had rotisserie chicken with the roost special sauce which would highly recommend, absolutely delicious. My husband had a burger which he said was very good. My son had a pizza from the kids menu which was wood fired and great quality. Milk shakes were insanely good!
