Hotel has been contacting us few days after we left, trying to get us to pay for our room and meal! We have tried to explain to them that we paid on booking (having proof the receipt and our bank statement) but they say we need to pay them and they also want more money that the room actually cost. Booking confirmed immediately our payment but the hotel never came back to us to apologise for distress. The hotel is not family and children friendly.

Severe banging of room doors. As heavy fire doors, very bad loud bang shut each time inconsiderate person(s) (near to our room) shuts their door; early morning, evening and night time. A uncomfortable, annoying, sleep/rest disturbing stay!

We attended yesterday for afternoon tea. Sandwiches and cakes were great, but scones were ruined by being served with Chantilly cream instead of traditional clotted cream! Could also serve a pot of hot water to top up the teapot. Attractive venue and very accessible.

The hotel's website is very misleading, the restaurant venue has changed to another situation. The limited menu was poor. We ordered sea bass (they did provide a dairy-free tomato sauce) and it came with a small mount of crushed potato which was over-salted. This was £23. The dairy-free brownie offered for dessert was like a dry piece of chocolate cake, the strawberry sorbet was decent. We live fairly local and had gone to celebrate a birthday. It would appear very few visit the restaurant alone as most people are staying and it is part of the package. No reason to provide poor food. Needless to say, we will not be going back or recommend to others. Such a beautiful setting, it is sad to see.

The Arboretum Restaurant is to be found within the grounds of the Mere Court Hotel Knutsford which is located on the south side of Manchester and about a 15 minute drive from the Manchester Airport. Located in the beautitul grounds of the Hotel and with plenty of parking just a few yards away, we chose to have a farewell lunch here before dropping a relative off at the airport. Friendly staff, and excellent service very nice food from a varied menu. We all finished our meals with perfectly clean plates. Classy location. Would recommend.

Had a pleasant met up with a girl friend over afternoon tea. This is my second visit in 18 months. The positives are it’s a nice ambiance, hotel appears clean & tidy in reception area, Bar area & externally hotel well maintained with manicured gardens & even the car park well presented with plenty of spaces. The staff seem pleasant & most professional. 18 months on...the afternoon tea was ok, but did feel something was missing on this second visit, maybe lack of presentation Or a couple of sandwiches less, however it was purchased thru Groupon so expect this was the voucher deal option.

Had an evening meal here recently, really nice environment and surroundings and friendly staff. It seemed fairly slow and on the whole the food was OK, the main issue was that the steak, ordered to be medium rare, arrived overcooked which was disappointing. The other meal was very nice but getting a steak right is pretty basic. when we raised this the Head Waiter was very apologetic and tried to remedy the situation which was appreciated though doesn't really make up for a disappointing meal. A little more training and this could be a really nice place.

We were looking forward to our meal having read previous reviews but alas the food was sadly lacking. Starters of soup & pate were pretty standard. We both ordered Cod for our main course & while the fish itself was very nice apart from the soggy skin, it was bizarrely served with very strong lumps of blue cheese & flaked almonds which was awful. Would have been much better with some vegetables. For dessert, the Chocolate Torte was rather bland & the Panna Cotta was served with large lumps of cinder toffee which was difficult to eat. The food isn’t cheap & for what we had did not represent good value for money. The service was very good but sadly it’s not somewhere we’d return to.

We were the only people in the restaurant, but still had quite a long wait and when it did arrive, the food didn't live up to our expectations. Four of us had a 3-course lunch here on Monday using some vouchers we had purchased which gave us a good deal. We had looked at the menus before booking and there really wasn't anything suitable for one member of the party so we phone the restaurant and asked if they could offer any alternatives. The receptionist said she would find out and get back to us once she had spoken to the head chef. A bit later she phoned back to say that the chef would prepare anything we fancied!! Wow - what a star!! All four of us enjoyed a delicious lunch - high quality cooking using very good quality ingredients!! The special dish (not on menu) that the head chef cooked for one of our party (vegetarian)was delicious!! Thank You!! Lovely setting, Super Staff - Great cooking - Highly Recommend!!

We go to Mere Court for meals from time to time and it is always excellent. Our last visit was a family celebration in May 2018 when I had booked a table for six adults and two 1 year old children on a bank holiday Saturday afternoon. The children’s mothers were concerned that they might disturb other diners but the hotel had prepared a separate room for us with doors that opened into the garden and enough floor space for the babies to play together between courses. The food was lovely as always. My starter was a generous portion of crab salad, very tasty. This was followed by braised beef with vegetables and a side order of chips, delicious. I chose a fruit meringue for desert, my favourite, scrummy. The children enjoyed a pasta dish from the children’s menu with some of our carrots and sugar snap peas. Wine was available by the glass and of course there was a full range of soft drinks. The whole afternoon was exemplary but it was the service that made this meal so memorable. The thoughtfulness of putting us in a separate room, the attention of the waiters between courses and their understanding of what we needed was outstanding. There was a wedding reception taking place while we were there but that had no impact on our celebration. As always we are looking forward to returning to Mere Court in the near future.

The Mere court hotel looks nice from the outside and the bar area didn’t disappoint. When we were taken to our table for our afternoon tea, we immediately noticed how cold the dining room was. This brought an apology from the staff. Then we waited and waited for our afternoon tea. This eventually arrived when one of the staff noticed we hadn’t been served. This brought another apology. The sandwiches were okay. The scones were very nice, the little cakes were alright. We noticed another couple wait even longer than we did for their afternoon tea and others who were served as soon as they arrived and were seated. We’ve had much better afternoon teas and far better service. Overall disappointing

I had booked afternoon tea to treat a friend and had spent a long time trying to find somewhere which looked like it might have a bit of atmosphere. I was sadly disappointed in Mere Court. The room we were served in was clean and tidy, but very dark considering it was such a beautiful day outside. It was also tucked away from the main bar, which meant that the only time we saw a member of staff was when he came to ask use whether we wanted tea or coffee and when he brought the food out. We had to wait till he came to serve another couple before I could ask for the bill and then we got tired of waiting to pay so had to go out and find reception in order to do it. There was no background music or anything so the room was very quiet and bland. The sandwiches and scones were tasty but the cakes were mediocre. Overall very disappointed in what was an experience experience for what it was.

Had afternoon tea yesterday on a beautiful sunny afternoon which made the setting look lovely and the staff were well organised but as there were very few people in the hotel at this time it couldn't have been difficult. However, having a Travelzoo voucher, must have meant we were not allowed the full experience as we were only offered tea or coffee when their website offers a range of teas. Also the site shows beautiful crockery when all we got was canteen ware. Having a voucher should mean they show what they can do to encourage you back again.

Some friends had bought us a Buy -A-Gift for a meal at The Mere Court Hotel so we were quite excited on arrival only to be greeted by two dried up hanging baskets at the entrance. We should have known that this wasn't going to be good but, after a drink at the bar, we were shown into the restaurant with two other couples in attendance and felt like we had been transported back to 1975 as the background music was similar to what I listened to at our local youth club! The service was very, very slow and we hadn't had our starters after 25 minutes of waiting. Main course was so disappointing. My husband's chips were very undercooked and his "medium rare " steak was almost burnt! My Turbot was a tiny scrap on the plate and it was a very sad meal all altogether..After waiting another 20 minutes for our desserts we decided to give up and leave. Not a memorable evening except for all the wrong reasons.

I have never walked out from somewhere without paying before. I went with my mum and daughter on Sunday afternoon, having booked well in advance. The service was poor - we waited for half-an-hour for our tea to arrive. I'd ordered a lactose free tea for my mum and it came with no scone and clearly shop bought cakes as the chef couldn't make lactose free ones! The bread was stale, the ham was plastic and the tomatoes were underripe, the coronation chicken appeared to be chicken less and some of the cakes were stale! I recommend a fresh sandwich and cake at the local garden centre instead!

Have stayed here several times but never eaten in the restaurant. A cold rainy evening saw four of us decide to eat here rather than trawl through Knutsford. Any reservations I may have had were dispelled even though both dining rooms were very busy. Staff were very efficient and offered choice from either bar or the a la carte. We all went straight for the main course , robe eye steak, burgers and fish and chips and each were more than happy with our choices. On the next table there was a family who were looking at the hotel as their wedding venue. The service they received was impeccable and we were told the following evening that they had agreed terms etc. I am not surprised at all as they were made more than welcome. Only negative is the fact that there is refurbishment going on but it didn't affect anything.

I was looking for somewhere different to take my friend for an afternoon tea for her birthday. Just by searching online I found the Mere Court Hotel. From booking on the telephone to paying for the bill, all staff were friendly and efficient. The hotel itself is beautiful; an old country house with beautiful grounds, including a lake. The hotel is gradually being refurbished and from what they've done so far it will be so lovely when it's finished. Oak beams, real fires and chandeliers create a very relaxing ambience. The room where we had afternoon tea looked out over the gardens. We were able to see the lake and a courtyard with a tree. I'm the summer I can imagine this place would be so pretty. The afternoon tea was very good value. My friend had the champagne option as it was her birthday (£18.95) and I had normal (£14.50). The tea consisted of sandwiches with 3 different fillings (tuna and sweetcorn, ham and cream cheese and cucumber), a second with jam and cream and then 4 different small cakes. It was actually the winter afternoon tea we had, so there were mini mince pies, Christmas cake, stollen and macarons. All were fresh and very tasty. Unlimited tea or coffee was also available.Previous comments I'd read said there wasn't much atmosphere in the room, but as a firm believer that you create your own atmosphere, I booked the Mere Court anyway. I'm so glad I did because it map a perfect setting for my friend's birthday treat.I will be returning again for an afternoon tea as it was such good value, an amazing setting and friendly staff.

Hotel bar was in midst of decorating-no wallpaper on walls. Champagne very poor quality and food was leftover christmas treats ie stollen n mince pies. Squirty cream not clotted on scones and poor selection of sandwiches - ham n tomato, tuna, cream cheese n cucumber. Not worth the money at all. We had booked a table at 8.00 pm on a Friday evening to celebrate my birthday. After pushing our way through a busy bar area,we were escorted to the Arboretum restaurant. Imagine our surprise when there was only one other couple in the room, and they appeared to be finishing their meal. The room was opulently decorated, but very gloomy and we were placed in a particularly dark corner. We were waited on punctiliously and the food we chose was lovely; however, our fellow diners soon left and, although a couple with a baby entered later, the place had zero atmosphere. The addition of a backing track that included Matt Monroe favorites did nothing to help. We had concluded our meal, paid and left by 9.30 pm.

I arranged a Sunday afternoon tea for 8 for my mother's birthday in February. When I booked I was told we'd be given a private room. Upon arrival the room was unheated and freezing cold. We were handed a glass of champagne each which had not been ordered and was told by our waiter no charge would be made for it. The tea and coffee were served in large ugly steel banqueting style jugs. The sandwiches were so thinly spread we could hardly make out what the fillings were. The cakes did not taste fresh. On the plus side, the two waiters and receptionist were delightful! The following day I checked the prices on the hotel's website and noticed that we had been charged and had paid for the champagne ( an additional £40). I telephoned and spoke to the General Manager who seemed most obliging during our conversation and assured me he would look into the matter and get back to me the following day. Suffice it to say he failed to do so and I have received no written response to my subsequent email. I regard the standard of customer service for such an establishment to be nothing short of appalling.

We called and opted to exchange this for an afternoon tea.Seated in the main restaurant area where several other guests were enjoying late Sunday lunches. An attractive table for 2 in the bay window, with a lovely view of the gardens/lake.Service started very well, chilled champagne was served, our afternoon tea followed along with tea, we were both happy with English Breakfast tea but would have probably had an alternative if offered one. The sandwich selection was: Egg, Tuna & Cheese & Tomato all were nice enough but a little too much butter for Mrs H. Nice scone with rather ordinary jam and whipped cream (Clotted would have been nicer). The cake selection was a very cloying pistachio and cranberry flapjack like square, a rather stale lemon drizzle and a pretty good chocolate brownie.By now we were the only table left in the room and none of the other used tables had been cleared! A large party then arrived and although the staff were in and out taking bar orders it was a little struggle to get their attention for more tea!

Wanted some special time with my daughter who is pregnant with our first grandchild so decided afternoon tea at the Mere Court Hotel fitted the bill. Greeted by a pleasant receptionist and directed to a table in the empty restaraunt, where we were given a glass of champagne each and told that food would follow. Food duly arrived, which consisted of some small sandwiches, two scones and 6 assorted small squares of sponge cake. There was also some jam and cream and sugar for the tea came in small packets. It was acceptable but a little dissapointing, there were no pastries and no choice of teas. The crockery was hotel ware and not China and the best l can say is that it was nice but not outstanding for the price . There was very little contact with the staff and for a hotel such as the Mere Court l expected better.

My husband and I were given a voucher for this visit by our daughter and decided to visit yesterday afternoon. On arrival the receptionist was very pleasant and we were immediately taken down the steps into the dining room. We were given a choice of table and chose one by the open fire. As soon as we sat down the waitress poured the Prosecco and a few moments later she brought the food and tea (coffee for my husband - no problem). The food was very fresh and there was plenty, served with a lovely smile, and later the waitress returned to check if everything was OK and if we would like more tea/coffee. All of the tables except one came into use and even a couple with a young child were accommodated - I don't think they had booked? There was a lovely atmosphere with suitable piped music and everything was spotless and not rushed despite the fact that they were hosting a wedding that afternoon. We have been to a few afternoon teas and this experience was by far better than most and is recommended by us.

Breakfasts were good, bar snack lunches were good & as for evening meals, well my husband enjoyed his food although it was reasonably plain - roast chicken one night & fish & chips another. My veggie food was awful and they didn't offer a menu choice beyond the mushroom & spinach wellington - I'm allergic to mushrooms. The chef cobbled up a terrible dish of a few slices of limp aubergine with luke warm mozzarella and tomato - it was tiny not that I could eat much of it anyway and the waitress looked embarrassed serving it up. I checked the next evening's offering by lunchtime & was told again it was mushroom & spinach wellington. They offered me a pea & mint risotto but unfortunately it was even more horrible than the previous night's offering. The risotto was mushy & the mint overpowered any other flavour. The extra veg was more peas. We also waited a long long long time. I'd have to be sure I'd be offered MUCH better veggie food before I'd return but other tables & my husband seemed happy enough with the meat offerings.

I was given a voucher from Amazon Local as a gift for sparkling afternoon tea & had difficulty booking a table! Every date I asked for I was told they were booked up. I asked them what date I could have but had to wait around 5 weeks for a reservation! Not a good start. My husband & myself were greeted by a very friendly receptionist. The hotel is set in amazing grounds. A very surly girl took us to our table & served us with a glass of champagne. I had requested certain diietry requirements which were adhered to. The food was lovely with finger sandwiches, cakes & scones with jam & cream. I had to ask for a knife as the table hadn't been set properly. I had to call over to the surly girl to serve our pot of tea. There was no music playing at all. Eventually we were the only guests left & suddenly they put the music on? I wanted hot water for the tea but there was nobody around so I went to the bar, nobody there, I then had to walk to reception & finally we got hot water. The service was not good for a four star hotel. Would I return, No! Would I recommend, No! There are plenty of other venues for afternoon tea

I purchased a voucher from Travelzoo for afternoon tea at this hotel, but left disappointed with the experience. There were no problems on arrival and we were shown to the dining room which had several tables setup for the afternoon tea, but with only 2 other couples in who quite rightly were placed across the room from each other. At first the service was good and a very helpful lady poured our champagne and then brought us the afternoon tea selection. Coffee followed. The hotel had a wedding on and basically the staff pretty much disappeared and we left to our own devices. The afternoon tea selection wasn't brilliant or original, with 9 finger sandwiches between 2 of us which were egg, cheese and ham. A large scone each and 3 small cakes each. My honest feedback would be to put a bit more thought into the selection, as we've had afternoon tea at the Hilton and this was way off the mark.Unfortunately what really spoilt the occasion for us was that despite the space in the room the table we were shown to had a large round table behind, and about half an hour into the experience a noisy group sat down. My partner couldn't hear what I was saying across the table and although a waitress initially came in to provide the group with their afternoon tea she quickly disappeared again. Basically we left and won't go back.

Not a bad hotel but beware if you want to use your card whilst there...In this electronic age, and in what was meant to be a reputable hotel, never in a million years did I think I would have any issues using my card once I had spent the cash I had on the overpriced drinks...How wrong could I have been!! Firstly to order a round of drinks totalling £14 a 'credit slip' had to be set up as a tab, the credit slip was completed so poorly that not even the staff knew what the tab number was. The next day my wife and I decided to go into Knutsford to look around and for something to eat but on checking my balance it appeared that I could not touch £100 in my account. I rung Mere Court hotel assuming it was a straightforward issue to clear up and the first customer service assistant (Khadija) was brilliant trying to sort it out, she even refunded the 'pre authorised' money to my account but as it was a weekend this would unfortunately not clear in time for us to enjoy Knutsford. When we were in bed, I got a phonecall at 11pm from The Mere Court with a line manager (Karen) demanding I pay them back the refunded pre authorised amount (which had not cleared) and even when I explained the situation she effectively branded me a liar with regards to the credit slip. I checked my statement on the Monday and the bill for the drinks had been taken out of my account the day after they were 'bought' through this convoluted system and the refund had been returned to The Mere Court Hotel. I was still unable to touch the funds in my account. I left it for a day in case the system was slow but on Tuesday (Today) I went into the bank and apparently the Mere Court had 'pre-authorised' monies from my account and this pre-authorisation would not expire until the 3rd of March, 10days after I purchased the drinks!! I rung the Mere Court hotel and was transferred from one person to the next until I spoke to the General manager who then proceeded to say that it wasn't their problem and I was 'privileged' to use my card at their hotel, saying the ALL the top hotel use this ridiculous system!!I have been to my fair share of 5-star hotels and have never encountered this, certainly not coupled with a customer service akin to Fawlty Towers. So the Mere Court managed to take the £14 for the drinks I had bought within a day and also managed to refund and also charge for the refund within a day but still felt it necessary to hold my money to ransom. With the exception of Khadija, the staff were abysmal, above their station and all need to attend courses in customer care including/especially the General manager. The Mere Court also needs to update their system to bring themselves into the 21st Century! This was a massive bring down after attending a wedding for two lovely friends

We have just returned from the Mere Court Hotel after having Xmas Lunch and what do we think of it. The answer is not a lot. Did we get a glass of champagne - it was not champagne it was pinot chardonnay that this is not champagne so that set the tone to begin with. Did the venue have any atmosphere, none at all there was no music playing to create a festive atmosphere. The food was lukewarm when it eventually arrived and it was mediocre, the potatoes must have been kept warm for hours as they were not fresh they were like rubber and the carrots were shrivelled it was very mediocre to say the least and did not justify the price tag. It is Xmas day and we know it is hard work for the staff but this was nothing to be reckoned with at all, it was very poor. The staff were young and inexperienced and did not have a clue about service. Are we being super critical, no were are being totally honest, it was just very bland and not what we anticipated and to be quite frank we could not get away from there quick enough. Never again..........

My friend and I had afternoon tea at the hotel restaurant, we had purchased a voucher and thought it would make an excellent stop off, on route to our holiday. The hotel was easy to find but the disabled parking was dire, no spaces near the entrance, my friend went into reception an enquired if there was closer parking, they said it would be OK! to park at the door, if we did not block the way,I would have liked suitable ajacent parking available. We where met in the bar by the waitress who showed us to our table, the room was full of character oak beams crystal lights and mock gas open fire, the table had crisp white cloths and knapkins. The tea was fine not outstanding but acceptable,we where a little dissapointed by the choice of crockery one would have expected twee china to match the lovely surrounding but the tea pots where mini cafetiers and the cake stand was modern, odd choices for a very tradition venue. The negatives would not stop me revisiting the hotel, but as my school reports said "Could do better"

We had afternoon tea for two on a special purchase voucher. The whole affair was poor. The young man waiting on was pleasant but had no pizzaz and was obviously inexperienced. They balked at the idea of further sandwiches...most afternoon tea places offer this as standard. The sandwich fillings were mundane. They "ran out of cakes" ( a key feature to a traditional afternoon tea!) and so we were given a large cookie each instead....hardly reminiscent of a summer afternoon in England. The fizz was flat. The room was dark and a bit depressing. So all in all, I've had better afternoon tea at British Home stores!

We visited this restaurant having benn bought a buy a gift voucher. The first issue was booking a table where Friday and Saturday were not available due to the hotel hosting weddings. We then suggested a Thursday and were told the receptionist would have to check with the chef which took her 2 days! By then we only had a week of our voucher left (our fault for leaving it late) and they could only offer Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday. Due to other commitments we could only do Monday which is not a high demand night but we had no other option. On arrival we were directed to the restaurant, following the directions we ended up in a little lobby area with stairs down to the restaurant there we waited for 5 minutes for someone to seat us. Eventually the receptionist come through and asked abruptly if there was a problem, we said there was no-one around to seat us and we were told to sit anywhere. The resaurant only had 3 other diners a couple both on iPads ad a business traveller. The atmosphere resembled a mausoleum with piped music! We were then welcomed by the waiter who was pleasant and we ordered drinks, he ten forgot my G &T only bringing the glass of wine I ordered for with the meal. The food came reasonably quickly and was ok but not inspiring, my husband's black pudding starter was drowned in apple sauce and my pork belly was very dry. My husband's salmon main course was nice but my lamb was over cooked. My husband opted for creme brûlée which was ok but very over priced at £7.50 I had the cheese board which was very nice although the butter was rock hard and completely unusable. At the end of the meal we waited ages for someone to show their face to ask for the bill. Overall we got the impression that the hotel did not want our business and we will not return.

We went into the Mere for an afternoon tea yesterday afternoon, having reserved earlier in the morning. On the plus side, the hotel itself is quite beautiful on the outside.Negatives - We requested a table outside as the inside of the hotel looked like at the very best 'average' and had to wait the best part of 20 minutes just hanging about doing nothing. Finally after asking the front desk twice, they showed us to our table- Plates, cutlery. Every single thing that turned up on our table was dirty. All 4 plates had stuff on it, all cups had stuff on it. When I pointed this out, the explanation given was we wash it with the tea leaf strainers and hence the dirt. Wouldn't explain sticky stuff and grease.- Service - the waitress that served us was actually nice and I felt sorry for her but the place was horribly under staffed due to a wedding. It took ages to get anyone's attention.- Food - They dished up whipped cream for the scones instead of clotted cream. When we enquired about this, we were first told that was clotted cream. My wife then said, it most definitely is not clotted cream. 10 minutes later they came and said, the kitchen ran out, so it was indeed whipped cream.Overall, very disappointing and probably the worst afternoon tea experience I have had to date. Avoid like the plague.

A family visit planned set menu of Tomato soup starter which was lovely and if I'd known it was rapidly down hill after that I'd have just had another 2 portions of the soup. Instead however I had Something that resembled a breast of chicken or some kind of bird tasty enough but so small it would have fitted neatly in the palm of a child's hand. Three little overcooked potato's and some Green things that maybe were supposed to be peas or mint...I can't be certain. Oh and 3 pickles too!!! Any way dessert was a very over cooked Creme brule with vanilla covering the base of the pot rather than mixed in with the vanilla custard. Coffee was served after the waitress remembered what she was doing. Oh and at the beginning when a member of my family asked for another bread cob he was met with the reply 'Erm your only supposed to get one mate, I'll see if someones left theres' (?!) The 2 young children sat on the table with us were given cold chips a pot of wrinkled again over RE heated peas and cold chicken goujons. After the children refused to eat it I thought I'd try the there chicken my self. It was like biting into what I imagine biting into a crispy bag of dust would be. Like a full hoover bag. Dry tasteless & cold. There dessert was 3 scoops of ice cream pre scooped into a dish and then re freezed. Not something a so called top class restaurant should be doing.Later I asked for 3 cups of tea at the bar which the barman was displeased about and was charged £8.95! I wanted tea not Gold leaf freshly squished out of the bag by the Queen! Stupid money and very poor service.

We were given a Travelzoo afternoon tea voucher as a Christmas present from our friends. We booked for 3pm on a cold Thursday in February and received a very warm welcome from reception. Table available on time and nicely laid out and food well presented. Our glass of sparkling wine was served immediately we sat down and the cake stand with food, and the tea arrived within a couple of minutes.Food was all very fresh and very tasty. The sandwiches were rather small, with no crusts! as you might expect. The scones & cakes were very good. Tea was 'proper tea' served in a glass teapot - nice change from tea bags.It was good value as a 2 for 1 offer - otherwise i feel it would be overpriced for what we received, but no complaints about the room, the staff and the hotel in general.

I was working in the area and so I stopped for some lunch as I saw that they took tastecard at 50% off the food bill. I got tp the bar, ordered a drink and sat down. A lady came and took my food order, I informed her that I had a tastecard and she said it was 2-4-1, I said no it was 50%, she said she'll find out. Lunch arrived, I had coronation chicken with a jacket potato. I could barely taste the chicken or anything else, all I could taste was the horrobile mayo. So the food wasn't great, several people walked past as I had finished but did nothong in clearing the table or even getting the bill. To rub it in, a couple of other guest were there who clearly knew a few members of staff and they got speedy service and were tended to. After waiting nearly half an hour after my meal, the lady that served me at the start turns up and I finally get the bill but alas full price, I again ment on 50% tastecard and I had to say, wellthe website says 50%, off course I had the page open. So she wanders off again and comes back with the same full bill saying that's fine that her colleague will be back to take payment. Another 15 precious minutes later, I finally pay and that was that. So all in all, crap food. Worse staff, poor custimer service. I will certainly not be coming again!

We bought a Travelzoo afternoon tea voucher as a Christmas present for our friends and decided to treat ourselves as well.We booked for 3pm and although we arrived almost half an hour early were immediately welcomed and shown to the restaurant. We were given a choice of tables and selected the best seats in the house - overlooking the water. Our glass of bubbly was served immediately and slipped down very nicely as we awaited our afternoon tea.Although we did wait a little while for the food when it arrived it was all very fresh and well presented. The sandwiches were rather "dainty" as you might expect but together with the cakes and scones we were all quite full in the end.The drinks of tea were served in the equivalent of a "cafetiere" which was quite novel! It was good value as a 2 for 1 offer and a very nice way to meet up with friends on a lovely sunny day in pleasant surroundings.

It is difficult to rate the restaurant in this hotel badly enough. We stayed here 2 years ago and did not return because of the restaurant. We thought they must have improved in the meantime but not a bit of it. The food is OK, though not brilliant and the portions adequate but the service is truly abominable. We booked a table for 19.30 and arrived at 19.25. Their system is to sit one in the lounge [presumably in the hope one will buy drinks] but we refused to do that, and after some persuasion we were reluctantly permitted to sit in the restaurant. We finally got the menu, after complaining quite vigorously, at 20.00. Half an hour. The staff were clearly following their routine and were not to be moved no matter what we said. And no, they were not apologetic. It took about another half an hour before we got any food – an hour after we had sat down and after more complaints – and the main course eventually arrived at 2100 – one and a half hours after we had booked into our table. The restaurant was not busy – by any normal standards – and there were a number of other guests who were quite clearly annoyed by the delays. So it was not that they were overworked or overwhelmed, but they do have absolutely no apparent awareness of the guests’ feelings or requirements and even if they did they have absolutely no intention of changing their routine to suit anyone but themselves. We ate out for the second night at a Loch Fyne which was everything this restaurant is not – and with much much better food into the bargain - and nothing would induce us to return to this restaurant again which we think is truly dreadful.
