I absolutely love being in this place and it has a beautifully calm feel. However I am totally astonished by the dolls-house size servings for lunch- at normal lunch prices. I almost asked them if they hadn’t accidentally given me a kiddie’s portion - for a cheaper price- as for over £9 I got two slices of delicious small rye toast, about 7 very small lettuce leaves, 4 olives and a small pot of delicious dip. All very tasty but absolutely not a main course. I know I these are locally sourced ingredients but this felt really wrong. I will definitely return for post lunch coffees but will make sure to eat somewhere else where I can fuel up for lunch before hand.

This cafe was recommended to us and when we walked in the venue was pleasant enough, however the food really let it down. The menu was very limited and nothing that would appeal to a child. 3 of my group had the soup which was fine, but we had to pay an extra £1.50 for 2 small rolls. I had the leek and gruyere tart which was extremely small with nothing to accompany it. I asked for a side salad, which was literally a few leaves. I was going to be charged an extra £3.50 for it, until I complained and they took it off the bill. The staff were pleasant and the coffee was good but we felt really ripped off. £36 for 4 small meals with drinks. The previous day I’d spent £25 for 5 people in a different cafe and been so impressed by the food, portion sizes and choice. The contrast was huge.

A great place for a light lunch or coffee and a sweet. The staff are friendly, welcoming and helpful. The food is good and there are gluten free options. The coffee is especially good. A bonus is being able to browse the gallery.

This is a lovely place to visit with a beautiful shop full of interesting homeward, clothes, rugs, cards, toys, pottery etc. There is a cafe which serves tea, coffee, pastries, cakes, soup and lovely lunch items. It’s a small menu however everything is homemade and delicious. There is under cover seating outside and space inside. Well worth a visit! They adhere very well to the covid rules with hand washing facilities and distancing.

The atmosphere, friendliness, food and coffee are all excellent in an unfussy way. It's such a pleasure to meed friends or to grab a moment of solitude, enjoying the quality magazines with a light lunch and superb coffee. When I first found this delightful place after moving to the area, it confirmed that this is a fantastic place to live.

As soon as we came into the building just before 12 on a Saturday there was a really enticing smell. The food more than lived up to it. We had to wait a little for a seat as it was full of people having coffee, and the ambiance was lovely. There was soft seating in one corner with newspapers and toddler toys, and more seating outside for the warmer weather. We had a delicious slice of frittata with two beautifully presented, dressed salads and it was perfect. Coffee and cake to follow. It was the best light lunch out we'd had for quite a while. We shall definitely be going back. It's a great shop too.

Went with my mother for lunch as in the area. Not in the town but on an industrial estate which was fine. Large building so restaurant felt spacious, either comfy sofa or nice big tables to sit at. When we got there they had run out of specials as been busy. We had the soup which was broccoli, with 2 bread rolls served hot. Delicious and felt was home made, filled us up so couldn't try a cake. Staff friendly. Loved the decor. Recommend.

Quite a limited lunch menu, but adequate for a light lunch. Our food, which included tapas choices, frittata, baked potato with cheese was very good, although the advertised salad was little more than a torn up lettuce leaf. What let it down for us was the poor service. We asked for menus - pick them up for yourself, asked for water - serve yourself, then we had to place our order at the counter. The food came sometime before the cutlery. No one asked us if our food was okay or we would like cake or coffee to follow. Having booked a table for lunch in advance, we expected menus, cutlery, serviettes and water to be on the table. When we requested the bill, there was a delay as the assistant was busy texting on her phone. Such a shame that the excellent food was let down by poor service.

We went to Presteigne for the Sidney Nolan Trust (well worth a visit) and stopped off at The Workhouse Gallery & Café first for lunch. It's a delightful place, full of beautiful rugs and crafts and wonderful things to buy. We sat outside and had delicious plates of tapas, served by charming people. Well worth a visit (and persevering to find it as it's on a small industrial estate off the by-pass).

... really it did as we were there when the Welsh earthquake ‘hit’ during Feb half term. Luckily it made no difference to our enjoyment of flatbread sandwiches and great salads. Interesting flavours, good ingredients, generous portions and a lovely, arty feel to the place. Coffee was good and the rug shop upstairs fascinating. Well worth visiting.

The Workhouse Gallery and Cafe is a great space to look around and sit in the cafe for a coffee and scrummy cake or have lunch. The cafe has a limited menu of light lunches but they are very enjoyable. You can relax on the sofas reading while having coffee. The gallery part is a must while there even a peek upstairs to the wonderful collection of, rather expensive rugs!

Staying in Presteigne we were looking for a good coffee. The Workhouse seemed to fit the bill. It’s located in an industrial estate on the edge of town but don’t let that put you off, it’s actually rather pleasant. The coffee was good as was the food. Be mindful that you may come out spending more than you expect. The Workhouse is a shop as well with beautifully designed and displayed products for sale. If your looking something more than a cafe then this is well worth checking out.

A cafe in the middle of an industrial estate on the other side of the bypass means that the casual visitor may well not find it. It is attached to a blanket and craft workshop type place but even so, it took us most of the week to find it.The food is good plain cooking, a lot of it is vegetarian but not exclusively so (we had home made beef lasagne). There were two other specials on the board and a homemade soup/ This was in addition to a selection of sandwich type things, served with a very good side salad, not just your routine limp greens and a couple of slices of tomato variety. The atmosphere was pleasant and it is worth noting as well it is dog friendly, a lot of the "non pubs" we found in the area were not.Would definitely go again

This is one of those places you would never know about without (a) friends in the area, or (b) research. The Workhouse Gallery & Cafe sits on a small industrial estate in Presteigne, not the sort of place you would think about looking for good food. The Gallery has an amazing and diverse assortment of ethically produced and unusual gifts, toys etc and venture onto the first floor for carpets, rugs and textiles. Deep joy. But, back to the food. There is a small daily menu with Specials of the Day as well as good coffee, tea and so forth. The food is locally sourced and delicious. The Workhouse is open Tuesday - Saturday 10-4 and well worth seeking out. It is one of many surprises to be found in Presteigne so do go and explore this area. Another for my "must return" list.

The Workhouse Cafe was definitely a find, stuck in the middle of an industrial estate, you have to know it's there. Once discovered however, there's no looking back! The salads they prepare are delicious, filling and different. The Courgette tart is to die for, so much so, that we asked them to make 10 for our wedding. Soups and cakes also very tasty. Everything is made on site. Considering the Cafe is based in an industrial unit, it has been turned into a very welcoming, friendly and warm place to go for lunch. Always busy. Lots of other things to look at on your way in and out. In summer, there is room to eat outside in a shady leafy area.

This is a regular haunt of ours, usually for coffee and a cake (brownies are delicious) but occasionally for lunch. The menu is limited, but usually has two or three things that need to be decided amongst. We particularly like the spiced couscous which accompanies several lunch dishes. The atmosphere is relaxed, with two large sofas and an armchair for morning coffee, a plentiful supply of design magazines to browse and access to WiFi. There is a pleasant outdoor seating area for the warmer days. Staff are always friendly and pleasant. There is also an eclectic selection of gifts, games, cards, jewellery and art to browse, so a pleasant place to spend an hour or two.

We were on holiday in the area earlier this month and a friend recommended this cafe for a light lunch. Granted, they offer a small menu plus a couple of ' today's specials' - usually a soup &/or a savoury tart with a salad assortment - but they are obviously home-made to a very high standard. In addition, there's a selection of cakes and nice fresh coffee. Surrounded by displays of works of Art in a gallery set aside from the rugs and carpets' studio and display areas, we found a gem ! 3 visits in a fortnight merely confirmed this.

Pleasant surroundings outside, unfortunately the food was not too a very high standard. Ham and piccalilli sandwich, ham tasteless (wafer thin and breaded, supermarket family pack springs to mind). Should have been advertised as a Piccalilli sandwich, Coffee was fine.
