Nice food, attentive chef that comes out to chat to you before snd after your order which is a nice personal touch. The barking dogs are constant and they are unable to control them which is a shame as several dog owning pubs usually can get them to shut up - it isn't right to stress out dogs in side gate every time a punter comes in. The local black fly is very prevalent in the rusty chair beer garden.

I have visited the Monkland Arms on many occasions since Allie and Jed took over and have always been impressed by the warm welcome and friendly staff. Very dog friendly too! Although the food was generally good - the atmosphere was really spoilt by the constant loud barking of the two dogs which were in a pen in the main bar. You could hardly hear anyone (even at your own table) speaking. Definitely not conducive to a calm lunchtime.

WOW... Called in around 7:30pm on a Friday night looking for a meal with the kids. The staff/owners couldn't have been more welcoming and helpful. 2 kids had freshly hand made pizza with beautiful ham and fresh tomatoes. Hubby had a double lamb burger with cheese, chips and a side of mushrooms and I had beef chilli with half and half chios and rice. It was all out of this world and we're all stuffed. Bonus was half way through eating, having a live guitar and penny whistle playing. Such an amazing atmosphere 😍

We were looking for food on a Sunday night and bumped into this. Allie and Jed have created a very special place in The Monkland Arms. A place where you can enjoy breakfast, lunch, dinner or just a drink. With a beautiful garden, actual home made food with locally sourced produce, and home grown herbs to enhance the dishes. It is more than worth a visit and return. We had fish and chips, butter chicken curry, lemon cheesecake and apple crumble. A great choice of beers and indeed a nice Sangiovese red wine. It was the most relaxed place that just warms your boots. Give it a go and catch some time with A & J who are so interesting and lovely to chat too. Anyone worried about Covid and getting back to normal - here you will feel a home from home.

On entering we were greeted by the very friendly owners. Post lockdown people are hesitant to get back to normal but this place has done everything they can to welcome us back. The garden is lovely including a covered marquee if needed and inside everything is spotlessly clean and comfortable. The food was all home cooked, speedy and well presented. We had calamari, garlic mushrooms, burger, trout and pizza and would happily recommend all of it. Amendments were offered with a smile and child portions were offered. On that point, very child friendly. Drinks were varied and well priced. Large selection of ciders and local ales. If we were back in the area we would definitely go back. Thank you.

Hello the Monkland arms, and regards from sunny Merthyr. Me and my wife called in to-day on spec - Bank holiday Monday. First of all your place was spotlessly clean, so brownie points for that. Second how can anyone can give you a bad review? I can't begin to go down this road because this makes no sense to me. Our meals were delicious, my wife had your sea bass, and me -- well just soup, because that's what I fancied, and just right it was too. In conclusion we were fortunate that we called into the Monkland dairy opposite you otherwise we may have sailed past unaware you were there. So the Monkland arms keep your plates warm for we will be back!

Ordered the tapas and whitebait with drinks. Whitebait had no batter so had a non-crispy texture which was unpleasant. The 'tapas' was dire. Greasy haloumi cheese tasting of oil, with no crispy browning on the surface as expected. It just looked like lard on the plate.. The white bean stew was insipid. The falafel was a horrible ball of mush. The best bits were those ingredients that had not been cooked such as the olives and the bread. The owner reduced the bill when we paid, as we had commented that the food was very poor to the waiter...but what we wanted was good food rather than a partial refund. New chef needed desperately.

Although the staff were friendly and the pub very clean, the service was very poor and the food was no better. We were travelling home, from Shrewsbury to South Wales and decided to break the journey and have Sunday lunch. We arrived at around 13:40, sat down and ordered food. We were not asked if we wanted drinks, so I went to the bar and ordered some drinks. When we were chatting about how our weekend had gone, the same girl who took our food orders came back to our table and took our order again, which was 3 roast beef dinners and 1sticky toffee pudding and a pot of coffee, which was to served at the same time as the 3 dinners. The pudding and coffee promptly arrived, so we assumed that the 3 roast dinners would be on the way, about 45 minutes later they still hadn't arrived. On enquiring, we were told that they would not be long, they took around 10 minutes. By this time the pudding and coffee had long been finished. When they eventually arrived the beef looked very good, 2 thick pieces, the potatoes on the other hand I felt were a bit disappointing, a few small new potatoes and small, not very well roasted, roast potato. We had good size tureen of vegetable, with 3 aunt Bessie type Yorkshire puddings, and a boat of gravy, which was not enough for the 3 of us, so we asked for more. By the time we had put the vegetables onto our plates, and poured the small amount of gravy on each plate, we still hadn't had more gravy. The beef was not at all tender, and the broccoli was very under cooked and almost raw, when we told the waitress she said sorry and took away the remaining vegetables. At no time did anyone from the waiting staff, kitchen staff, or management ask if we were happy with our meals and service.

The Monkland Arms, recently re-opened, is what a pub should be - a place where you can feel at home, are made welcome and supplied with good food and drink. The menu is just right, not too extensive but with something for most people, and our dinners were very good indeed. We thought we would try the Monkland Arms after hearing some hood stories. The menu is on a large chalk walk where the menu changes when the food item ends. I was going to have the lambs liver and was dissappointed when it was taken off the board only to be told that they were now adding a Barnsley lamb chop. It was amazing..... with Dauphinoise potatoes red cabbage and a Port gravy to die for. My husband had the Rib Eye Steak with the trimmings. Lots of mushrooms 2 halved tomatoes and homemade onion rings and chips. I had the Oldfields cider and my husband had Ludlow Blond. Both were kept perfectly.

Last night we had our first meal at The Monkland Arms since ownership passed to Jed and Allie, and we were well impressed. We've already been there a few times for drinks (it's a short walk away from where we live) so we already appreciate the warm, welcoming and friendly atmosphere these folks are maintaining. The beers are a mixture of local and guest, kept in peak condition and served up with care by knowledgeable staff (and they seem to know how to pick staff too). There's a good selection of wines, at real-world prices too. The menu is clearly displayed on the wall of the bar area, and it's a great mixture of old favourites (beer battered fish and chips, burgers, etc) and some nice, interesting-sounding alternatives. We skipped starters (not for the lack of choice...) and I chose the Sausage "selection" (but I asked for 3x Chilli Snorkers instead of one of each type) with chips and onion gravy, and the Memsahib went for the Butternut Squash Chilli. Despite skipping the starters, the main courses arrived in good time, and they were superb. No frills, no dramas, nothing was pretending to be something it wasn't, it was good, wholesome, beautifully prepared and simply presented, top-notch grub in good quantities. Neither of us could possibly resist the Bread-and-Butter Pudding-with-Custard to follow, after a respectable pause, and that too, was perfect. This feast was accompanied by a cheeky and unassuming bottle of Pinot and several pints of the Blonde beer.

I absolutely love being in this place and it has a beautifully calm feel. However I am totally astonished by the dolls-house size servings for lunch- at normal lunch prices. I almost asked them if they hadn’t accidentally given me a kiddie’s portion - for a cheaper price- as for over £9 I got two slices of delicious small rye toast, about 7 very small lettuce leaves, 4 olives and a small pot of delicious dip. All very tasty but absolutely not a main course. I know I these are locally sourced ingredients but this felt really wrong. I will definitely return for post lunch coffees but will make sure to eat somewhere else where I can fuel up for lunch before hand.
