They do great gluten free options for coeliacs. Two amazing things I tried: CONFIT DUCK LEG Served with a chorizo, bubble & squeak potato hash & a smoked paprika gravy. SLOW ROASTED BELLY PORK Stuffed with apricot & sausage meat, served with cider braised red cabbage, rosemary & garlic sautéed potatoes & a smoked bacon cream sauce.

SO GOOD! I had the beef blade, my kids had the chicken "nuggets" that were more like amazing schnitzels- everything was 100% delicious. We're going back as soon as possible 🩷

Popped for a pie and chips as its highly rated pub in the area. Pie of the day was a-little too left field for us, as it was curried something or other. We like a good old fashioned steak and ale or ham and leek. We opted for just some hand cut chips. Lovely to be fair. But £4 for a bowl seemed alittle steep when we got them. The Ketchup bottle was questionable if it was Heinz or not as bottle was old and clearly topped up. Didn’t taste of Heinz’s but not sure. Selection of ales was good. Staff where great and attentive. Was busy and a great vibe for a Monday afternoon. Would re visit for the beer garden and summer menu. £19.30, for 2 pints and 2 bowls of chips.

Just been back to the Winning Post for the first time in a while. And will be returning often. What a brilliant community pub this is, under Fiona & Malcolm's stewardship. The food is properly home cooked and not part of some system or chain process. It really is the most amazing pub food in a warm friendly local atmosphere. Really very highly recommended.

Absolutely fantastic meal at The Winning Post! The food was excellent—one of the best meals we’ve had in a long time. Everything was cooked to perfection and bursting with flavor. The staff were so lovely and welcoming, making the whole experience even better. On-site parking was a great bonus too. We’ll definitely be coming back and already planning to visit for a Sunday dinner. Highly recommend!

With three generations of family plus a dog in tow, one is always a little wary of the reception you'll get when entering a new eateries. All was good here, with a kids menu offering the staples like chicken nuggets and scampi, but also throwing in something different with Traditional Brazilian Stew (there's been Onion Bhaji Burger before). Our little one was happy with only fries and ketchup. Meanwhile, the adults enjoyed a dish featuring belly pork as well as the Pie of the Day, an unexpected Chicken and Kimchi combo, both of which were thoroughly enjoyed. Happy to call in again on future visits to York.

Absolutely sensation meal this evening, slow cooked pork belly you could cut with a spoon. Korean chicken burger, and beef feather all some of the best food we've had in a restaurant in a long time.

Nice little pub to pop into why granddaughter is roller skating. Couple of pints of Guinness and a bowl of skin on fries. Nice and relaxing atmosphere and really nice staff.

Vinimos a cenar temprano cuando visitamos a un amigo que vive en York, nos quedamos atrapados en el tráfico y tuvimos que cambiar la reserva con la que estaban realmente complacientes. Estábamos impresionados por la calidad de la comida - mi marido dijo que su hamburguesa de pollo coreana era excepcional y superó enormemente sus expectativas. Nuestra camarera también era muy amable y sonriente y fue un placer ser atendido por ella.

Lovely pub,great staff, extensive range

WOW! I cannot believe how incredible the food was here. We were a large group and had meals ranging from a chorizo and pulled pork pie to a beef dish to burgers and to children's chicken nuggets. The chicken nuggets were homemade and just delightful, the pie was decadent with the most amazing pastry and my husband said the burger was the best pub burger he has ever had (a HUGE compliment). There was so much space for the little ones so we never felt like we were possibly interrupting or spoiling other people's meal. There was enough space for 2 prams too without feeling cramped. The hospitality and attentiveness was spot on. The decor was gorgeous and even though we parked in town, it was nice to see a few available parking spaces outside too. Many moons ago this was our local as students and we never felt welcome or comfortable...wow, hasn't everything changed. I wish you every success :) when having another uni reunion in York, we will certainly be back. Thank you for a fantastic experience ❤️

The food here is lovely, but the service left much to be desired. We visited on a quiet Saturday midday with two young children and were told to seat ourselves anywhere. Our meals, ordered from both the main and children's menus were delicious. A little overpriced but portion sizes were good. However, staff were overly eager to clear plates while some of us were still eating, making us feel rushed on multiple occasions. We also ordered desserts which did take a while to arrive but again staff were overly eager to clear plates. The experience took a disappointing turn when a staff member asked us to quiet our toddler—despite the pub offering a children's menu and having other families present. We had brought toys and books, but as toddlers do, he became slightly restless toward the end of the meal. The request was made loudly across the pub, making us feel uncomfortable and unwelcome, even though we were seated separately from other guests. While we understand that some settings may not be suited for children, a family-friendly venue at midday on a Saturday should be accommodating. Unfortunately, this did not feel like a child-friendly establishment, and the situation could have been handled more professionally.

Wow, what a lovely meal we had here. It started with a really warm welcome and being shown to a nice table. There's a awesome menu with something for everyone. Great for vegetarians. The service was really quick and nothing was too much trouble. The food was hot, delicious and really well cooked. The portion sizes were very generous and very filling. Desserts were to die for! Definitely recommend the apple strudel!

Here for a couple of days in York. Dropped in for a meal on a Monday evening in January. What a lovely experience from the start. Nice pub/ good service, and the food quality was excellent 👌 we had chicken supreme and southern fried chicken burger followed by strudel. Loved every bit of it. Based on the above I expect the rest of the menu to be good .

The Winning Post is a nice, cosy, unspoiled traditional pub. There is a wide selection of draft beers, including hand-pulled cask conditioned real ales, which were in excellent condition when we visited. I haven't tried the food, but the menu looks very good. There were some nice original paintings on the walls which were for sale. The staff are very friendly and welcoming this pub is definitely worth visiting.

Absolutely love this place. The food, the drink, the atmosphere are all amazing which says what a great job the staff do. Can't say enough how great this pub is. I love it.

Excellent pub in York. Food looked upmarket but still traditional. Ale looked after impeccably. Great atmosphere in the big front bar.

We love it here, it's our local because the atmosphere is great, the food is tasty and plentiful and they keep their beer in excellent condition. It's a win win win 🙌

Acabo de comer fabulosamente en el Winning Post. Alojarse en el lugar, así que quería en algún lugar para el almuerzo de Año Nuevo, que estaba a pocos pasos de nuestro Air be & be. Buscó en Trip Adviser y reservó una mesa para dos en función de las críticas positivas, ignorando las negativas. Tomé el entrante coreano de macarrones con queso, seguido por el cerdo del vientre y no me decepcionó. De hecho, mi único disgusto fue que no tenía espacio para el postre cuando había tenido mi ojo en el pan Baileys y pudín de mantequilla!

Great drinks and snacks selection and good for dogs as there's plenty of space between tables for them to relax in their own little space. Just a really cosy, welcoming and friendly pub really. Can't fault it!

Absolutely fantastic food and service. A reao hidden gem of the York food scene. Also extremely dog friendly and provided treats and a water bowl without being asked. Would reccomended to anyone who wants a warm pub experience combined with excellent food.

Pagó 8 libras. 90 por un vaso de prosecco, lo cuestionó pero solo dijo "ese es el precio" . Usé este pub durante 15 años, pero nunca más, ¡escandaloso!

Very best place and food is so delicious

A quick google search of where we could have some Sunday lunch while we were in the area led us here. We weren't dissapointed.! Beautiful food, which was obviously freshly made. And some really tempting and different things on the menu that you wouldnt see on a bog standard Pub menu. We shall call again next time we near York.

Stopped off here for a pint with the lads on the way to the races on Sunday, nice pint and a good atmosphere in the pub. Outdoor seating available, which we made use of as it was packed and quite warm in the pub. A good place to stop off on the walk from town to the racecourse.

We had a lovely family meal there with our family, there were lots of options including vegetarians and the food was very tasty. Also the service was very good. The only thing was that it was quite hot when we went there.

Went for evening meal. Staff were great. Friendly helpful and polite. Dining area can see into the kitchen so you can see your food being prepared. Food was amazing. Pie of the day was packed with chicken and bacon. The fish dish was to die for. I like my food hot and this was hot on arrival. A definite bonus. Puddings were cheesecake and sticky toffee pudding. Portions were great and both tasted fabulous. If I could fault at all it would only be that I like my STP with custard 😂 Don't listen to moaning race goers who have slated the staff. This is a great pub 5*

Bar shuts at 10pm which is unusual bearing in mind it is named after the races which did not finish until 10pm. We were rushed to finish our drinks that were not cheap and the girl was very aggressive

9 of us booked for 2pm lunch prior to York Races on Friday 26th July. We were greeted by Claire and had a drink on the smart patio outside before dining. The Taylor’s Landlord was superbly pulled with a flawless tight creamy head. Brilliant! Into the dining room and menu explained including specials. Every dish was marvellous. Korean Chicken - awesome. Sea Bass - perfect. Scampi - cooked to perfection and clearly done in new oil. Service by Claire and Paige was flawless and professional. We never had to ask for our glasses to be refilled, and table service including plates being brought and cleared was done with skill and aplomb as if we were in a busy Parisian cafe. I’ll be honest. We weren’t expecting anything amazing. The Winning Post is handy for walking to the Races and they had space which is why we booked. In reality this is one of the best casual dining pubs in Yorkshire that I can think of. Well done front and back of house. You are all a credit to the trade!

Never had a roast this good in all my life! Beyond a pub lunch! This is not a regular menu! This is not a main stream chef! Everything was beautiful! The vegetables were incredible crispy green cabbage with leeks and sliced broad beans beautiful potatoes that were crispy and served piping hot with beautiful herby gravy. I cannot rave about this menu enough! Thankyou for such a lovely family meal. The service was excellent and really relaxed and super friendly we can’t wait to come back! 5 stars ⭐️ x

I came in for food in the evening and had the tai red curry chicken pie. Wow! I was blown away. Never had anything like it before but Very delicious. Staff were very friendly and had some great ales as well so super bonus. Thanks guys for a nice evening.

Wonderfully friendly place and staff. Been on 2 different occasions food was fantastic on both visits. The food was freshly made and arrived piping hot and not long after it was ordered. Would recommend the place and will be back next time I’m visiting York.

Me and partner went for a Sunday lunch at 12pm. Didn't wait long for food. Service was great, staff are friendly too and food was brilliant!

We didn't eat there. The atmosphere is good and cozy on the terrace. Even the dogs got a bowl of water and a cookie.

Fabulous food. 2 young ladies who se4ved us were fabulous. Nothing was too much trouble. Even the Gluten free amongst us was treated as though nothing was too much bother. Highly recommend

What a fantastic meal for four adults and one child. They should be very proud of food and Beer selections on sale. We spent seven nights out at various restaurants around York and the Winning post was by far the best food, reasonably priced and very well served up. Top mark's 😋👍

Only popped in for a quick drink, but ended up ordering food as other people's looked great and I wasn't disappointed. Food was great.

Bit of a long wait but worth it in end!

We had a fantastic lunch, my vegan option which was the linguine dish was outstanding! Plus some Hell's Angels dropped by while we were there! Cool as! One of our favourite pubs in York. Always a pleasure, never a chore!

Very busy gastro pub and the kitchen were amazing at sending out cracking plates of food to hungry punters. I look forward to going again and trying something else. The chickpea burger with spinach pesto was stunning, great cottage pie, and the appetisers were very tummy and beautifully presented. We shared the brie filo parcels with pistachios and the arancini balls with a spicy tomato sauce and fiery Padron peppers!

Four of us enjoy a spur of the moment meal and drinks. All four of us devoured both the main courses and the desserts - that says it all. Good choice of meals for the two gluten-free eaters amongst us. We will be back. Highly recommended 👌

What an absolutely stunning find this pub is,great atmosphere,dog friendly,lovely home cooked food which was hot and flavoursome,sausage and mash withgravy to die for,chicken wrapped in bacon was delicious,staff made you feel so welcome.Wont be too long till we return.Thankyou

Haven't been in here for years on end and last time it was a run of the mill boozer requiring more effort. Its now a totally different place - unrecognisable. Great selection of beers, lagers, great food and friendly staff. Going back soon.

Exceptional service and fantastic food, a really great evening spent with my family

We went here on Saturday, just 2 of us. Luckily we had booked as it was busy. We were seated very quickly and had drinks within 5 mins. The menu is not huge which is good and there was a good mixture of dishes + a specials board. We decided to share a starter and dessert which turned out to be a good idea. For main I went for beef bourginion and my wife had stuffed chicken, wrapped in bacon. The portions are huge!! The beef was melt in the mouth and the chicken was cooked perfectly. The only thing we noticed was maybe a slight lack of seasoning but honestly that might be just us. Starter and desserts were again really good. The service we received was the best we have had anywhere for a long time. If the managers are reading this please keep doing what you do to keep your excellent staff. So Starter, dessert, 2 mains and a couple of drinks later and the bill was about £55. We will be going again.

Love the Winning Post, been going since we lived opposite, over 30 years ago. The place has changed loads since then, the food is good, the function room is well setup as is the outside area. It’s still a pub though, with a bar area and some decent ales, cheers!!
