Shambles Kitchen in York

Had a trip to York yesterday & had to stop by the great Shambles Kitchen. We had the Harry Trotter & Dick Turpin. They were both wonderful, packed full of meat & other items. The meat itself is really nice & the whole sandwiches of both everything inside both goes well together. Would definitely recommend & would definitely que again. The 10-15mins long Que to someone who’s never had one of these before might seem abit ridiculous but it’s well worth it. Looking forward to going back and trying out the other options they have.

Had the trufflepuff and it was just SO good!

The sandwich was very big in portion, could hardly try to finish it on my own. But the taste was very nice!

Having fireworks on a sandwich is a cute idea, adding a magical touch to this magical alley. However, the food was just okay.

Went here because of all the rave recommendations we've seen online. We weren't blown away by the Guy Fawkes or the Harry Trotter that we ordered. The beef barbacoa had more flavour, but the pulled pork was quite bland. The bread for both sandwiches felt quite thin and it fell apart after a few bites. All considered, the price felt pretty steep at over a tenner per sarnie.

For the hype and the price, I really expected more. Bread wasn't great. It was stuffed full of filling but the flavour was lacking / not working. Fun sandwich snack, but based on other people's reviews I was disappointed.

Absolutely excellent! This has now become our regular lunch place every time we visit York. We've now tried all the sandwiches and all of them are great! On our recent trip we tried the Trufflepuff which has pulled pork, lettuce, truffle mayo and parmesan. Absolutely delicious! My favourite is the Guy Fawkes! Who doesn't love a sparkler! If you haven't tried it you should! You won't regret it!

Quite overhyped. Average, expensive, cheese not melted, and really slow. Asked how much longer was told 2-3 mins and was closer to 15 after had already been waiting a while.

Freakin' AMAZING. The Dick Turpin is one sensational sandwich. The depth of flavour from the spice and smoke in the meat is really something special. Massively recommended... TRY ONE NOW.

Dulce María Madre de Dios. Vaya. ¡Teníamos un Dick Turpin, qué sarna! La carne de vacuno es tirada y jugosa, la especia se coloca con un delicioso sabor ahumado corriendo a través del fondo. El pan se mantuvo bien unido, teniendo en cuenta lo húmedo que está este sándwich. Encurtidos, ensalada crujiente y salsa picante. Incluso tienes un chispazo. No es para darle demasiada publicidad, pero creemos que es el mejor bocadillo que hemos probado para la profundidad del sabor. Tan bueno!

I decided to stop at the kitchen for lunch, and Friday was just gone, and I'm so glad we did. Service was great and done with a smile. The sandwiches were amazing, hot and very tasty. The queuing system was simple and easy to follow with the food coming in quick time! Thank you!

Had the beef Rueben’s and it was delicious. Plenty to share between 2. Others had the bonfire beef with a sparkler on top. I did wonder what the blow torch was for when I ordered. There are well organised and give you a bleeper so don’t get put off if there is a queue. Everything is fresh prepared.

Went for the Judy Hench & Guy Fawkes...Awesome!

Waited more than 20 minutes for a vegan shawarma - took a bite only to realise they’d given me chicken instead. Disappointing experience.

Fantastic sandwich shop. Small menu but done fantastically is a Harry potter theme sandwich options.

No nonsense Ruben sand. British version, but not bad at all. No inside seating, but it is satisfying!

Visted today 8th November Thought we would give it a go after the hype of social media we ordered the guy faulks I found the meat over Smoked the bread soggy and the meat was also a little dry If your wanting one of the shambles viral hypes then krep is a million times better Would i Try again probably but I'd order something different

The female cashier rolled her eyes and showed impatience toward Asian customers, but greeted local customers with a smile. The discrimination is so obvious; I won’t come again next time. Disgusting🤮🤮🤮

Honestly I think the best sandwich I’ve ever eaten - had the Reuben aka ‘Dick Turpin’. Delicious, can’t fault it at all. Staff were super friendly despite being rushed off their feet. They gave out a little beeper while you waited which was great because the area around the shop is so busy. Incredible food, thanks guys 🤘

I disappointed it was literally so mid. We ate it immediately and it was cold. I was expecting best sandwich of my life and I got bland luke warm pulled pork that was dry with no real flavour

Went for the Reuben which was delicious and had a bite of my wife’s beef barbacoa which was also very good. 10min wait after ordering due to it being really busy in the school holidays but they give you one of those electronic vibrating alarms so you can pop in the local shops on the shambles and nip back when it’s ready.

Amazing, freshly made sandwiches. Juicy, yummy, tasty. Potentially long-ish waits and not cheap - but absolutely worth it.

Tuvimos un sándwich fantástico desde aquí hoy mientras visitaba York, había visto críticas increíbles en línea y estaban 100% en lo cierto ✅️ 😀. Tenía el sandwich de rueben, a base de pastrami , fabuloso sabor y presentación, hecho por encargo ( te dan un timbre para significar que está listo ) , vale la pena el precio como ingredientes de primera categoría , increíble 👏

Pasé por un bocado rápido - tengo que decir uno de los bocadillos más deliciosos que he probado. Llegó a las 11: 50 en un sábado - había alrededor de 10 minutos de espera para pedir y 15 para la comida que voy a dejar caer una estrella para que podría haber sido más rápido, pero mi oh my valió la pena la espera! Carne de buena calidad, gran porción y servicio amable.

Amazing Reuben. The beef pastrami was so tender and peppery and all of the ingredients married together beautifully! It was immense and I would return to York just for that! Thanks!

Absolutely huge and delicious sandwiches, a must if you are visiting The Shambles. We tried the Judy Hench and the Trufflepuff, both were amazing!

¡Comida increíble! Probamos el Guy Fawkes (brisket) que estaba muy sabroso y probamos el Harry Trotter que no era tan sabroso, pero la carne era de una calidad increíble. La única desventaja es que es una arena muy descuidada que y no hay dónde comerla, estás cubierto de comida para cuando hayas terminado porque el pan muy - lleno - se sirve en papel que se pone aceitoso. ¡Toma tu propio plato/tenedor de papel!

One among the good street food in Shambles Market. Tried Pulled pork and Chicken Shawarma. Worth trying.

A delicious pulled pork sandwich, with friendly and happy staff. I highly recommend it to everyone passing through York! The only downside is that there’s no seating, and the nearby food court tends to get quite busy on weekends.

So so so much meat!! Some might complain about the meat to bread ratio but tbh, I'm such a meat-lover so I'm not complaining. Tried the guy fawkes and the sandwich was SOOO juicy and saucy. We shared between 2 people and we were stuffed by the end of it. So worth it.

Outside the shop was buzzing with hungry people feasting and waiting in anticipation. I had the guy fawks and it was insane! My wife had the harry trotter. Which she liked too! The servers looked like they really loved their jobs!

Had the vegan shawarma wrap, really good with lots of filling & worth the little wait on a busy day. Only downside is that it was quite oily - not for you if sensitive!

Good sandwich, although the bread was soggy almost instantly so half way through just became a mess. Ruben was very good. Queue was huge but I wanted to try it.

Honestly best sandwich I’ve ever had. Meat juicy, focaccia so soft. Beautiful. Only issue is no seating but that’s not their fault when it’s busy!

Visited here today, tried the guy Fawkes sandwich. Literally one of the best sandwiches I’ve ever put in my mouth, the meat, the bread just unbelievable. Literally could not fault, soooo soo tasty and fresh. Flavours were unbelievable. Cannot recommend enough!!

A lovely kitchen; you head up and order at the window, and there is plenty to choose from. I had the pulled pork, and it was lovely, highly recommended, and reasonably affordable!

Soggy and very expensive bbq beef sandwich. The meat wasn’t good and it burnt my lips because of the overly spicy sauce. Also make sandwiches wider not taller.

Ordered a Trufflepuff (think it's pulled pork, lettuce, parmesan). They give you loads of meat, the sandwich was full, the bread was delicious. I would suggest adding something that can give the sandwich a bit of a 'kick' - either make the parmesan stronger or add something stronger to the sauce just to bring the flavours out more. The bloke at the till was really warm, really welcoming. If I had any advice, I'd suggest that the girl making the sandwiches doesn't speak when she's making them as that's not hygienic - so maybe wear a mask if she wants to speak or don't speak at the time of putting the sandwiches together. I get that she was working hard and was lost in the moment, though. Understandable. Otherwise, a great experience and I will definitely visit again. I want to try all the sandwiches! Forgot to take pictures but it looked amazing!!

Stumbled onto this place while wandering through the Shambles, instantly drawn towards the sandwiches as we love smoked meats brisket, pulled pork etc, after ordering and a short wait we received the beef reuben(Dick Turpin) and the beef brisket(Guy Fawkes), perfectly smoked meat with the additions of the sandwich and wrapped in wonderful fresh bread. It's definitely worth a visit.

The Shambles Kitchen is a very popular choice in the city of York and always has queues outside of it. Also being popular on social media we decided to find out what all the hype is about. The menu is very limited but it doesn’t need to be any bigger as the 4 main choices are very appealing. The staff were very friendly and seemed to very much enjoy their job which was nice to see. Our food was prepared fresh and very professionally. We were given a bleeper that informed us of when our order was ready, and we were presented with a very attractive selection that we had chose - The Guy Fawkes and The Dame Judy Hench. The food tasted amazing and we are glad we have indulged. We probably won’t return again as the prices are quite high for what you get but you can’t knock it for this as it is all about the tourists in The Shambles therefore the higher prices are to be expected.

Good sandwiches and impressive bread. From a pricing point of view, you are eating to have your sandwich at Shambles market. The Dick Rueben would be my recommendation. Definitely worth a nibble.

My partner loved the guy Fawkes and I was so jealous of his sandwich - sadly they don’t do a GF option for the sandwiches. I appreciate it’s a small kitchen but would be amazing to see GF options for the sandwiches!

A very very disappointing visit to shambles kitchen today, tried the shawarma chicken wrap, it was incredibly bland , incredibly beige in presentation, absolutely zero heart and soul had gone into this , it replicated a chicken Caesar wrap from Tescos . It’s such a frustration, as an avid street food fan and a huge champion for the progression of the York food scene, that such establishments become lazy on the passion that got them going in the first place , and end up selling their soul to churn out very mediocre products to the masses . It’s such a shame they become ignorant to the fact, that to elevate a shawarma wrap into a meal that could be remembered, be worthy of posting and sharing, and most importantly recommending, isn’t that difficult to achieve. Please please please cook food you would remember yourself, and would tell all your friends about .

What a great little place, we called here for a quick dinner whilst in York, the food was really good and plenty of it and the lad serving was helpful. 👌🏻

Always wanted to try this and today was the day!! Ordered a Dick Turpin and a Dame Judy Hench! My god this didn’t disappoint! Best sandwich I’ve had in a very long time. Super quick service and fresh produce. It was so tasty I nearly ate the paper it was in! 🤤

Had 3 sandwiches here over a few days. Dame judy hench tasted great would 100% recommend that, the Ruben was good too but not the best I've had but still very tasty and the beef barbacoa was really really tasty 100% recommend that too. There is a market round the corner with tables/ benches where you can sit and eat. The prices are slightly on the higher side but good to eat there and try when visiting York...

They was fantastic best sandwich's I have ever had would highly recommend this place.

After seeing a review on tiktok of this place and a few others around and travelling to York that weekend it looked well worth a visit. My wife and I ordered the pork and ham and after handing over nearly £20 for the privilege we were handed this buzzer and told to wait. The place is obviously raved about as the queue for people waiting was massive. I think in total we waited almost 29 minutes for the buzzer to eventually go off, so £20 for 2 Sandwiches and a 20 minute wait cracking stuff. Positives first. It looked amazing, smelt amazing and was a fat looking sandwich. Negatives Couldn't taste any of the meat without pulling it out of the bread due to the sauce being over powering. The bread was soggy due to the amount of sauce. I was still hungry after finishing it. All in all a disappointment and something I wouldn't want to try again.

I will come back to York only to eat a few sandwiches from this place - absolutely delicious 🤤 Thank u for the delicious food, u guys are doing gods work 😇

This is the second time eating at the shambles kitchen and it's been fantastic both times. I've tried the trufflepuff and the Judy Hench and both are good, but the Judy Hench is my favourite so far. My partner has had the vegan shawarma twice and loves it. Very quick to order and receive your food, you get a little buzzer that goes off when your order is ready and have only waited 5/10 mins both times. We are from Kent and will stop here on the way up again for sure! Helps that York is a beautiful place 😁

I always stop here for lunch when I'm in York. The pulled pork sandwich is outstanding and the service is great. There's tables behind the restaurant in Shambles market where I can usually find seats.

This place is fantastic, I absolutely love it. Sandwiches are quite pricey but you get what you pay for. They are so delicious and having things like a sparkling stick in the guy Fawkes sandwich just makes it memorable. Would highly recommend

This place had me yearning for their sandwiches from the moment I passed, You can smell here from a street over , Every time, I'd have either eaten, had plans, or a queue as long as the ghost merchants I got the Dame Judy Hench, Had a lovely chat with the woman working there and was given a sandwich that looked like the picture Needs no guesses to say it was absolutely devoured, and I'm now planning a trip back to york just to try the rest of the selection

Daaamn, one of the best sandwiches I've ever had! It could have been a tad bigger, but I'm glad it wasn't as the focus was on the ingredients and they definitely are spot on. Does have a good-sized queue in front with a bunch of instagrammers waiting to take a photo of the guy Fawkes sandwich which comes with a sparkle.

Ordered a Dame Judy Hence and loved it. Sandwiches are on the pricey side but well worth it as you get plenty of fillings!

This is only my second time in York but I can't believe you can get better value street food anywhere else in the city. Outstanding!

If I could, I would give 10 starts. Smelt the food as I walked past and just had to get something. Ended up getting the Harry trotter. Whitch is pulled pork. Card only, which is not a problem. But it's super amazing food. They put a sparkler on top with is a nice touch

The pork has a little fishy smell, it's British pork, but it's still very fragrant! It's very atmospheric, maybe it's winter, the wind is so strong and cold. Next to it is a Harry Potter themed store

Visited York for a couple of days. And can honestly say this place is the does the best sandwich we have ever had. We tried the Dick Turpin and the dame Judy Hench. Both amazing couldn't pick a favourite, so we went back for more to bring home. Overall 100% recommend fresh food, excellent service and the lovely lady who served us WOW she can really sing.

That has got to be the tastiest sandwich that I have ever eaten . I chose the guy fawkes and the young lady taking orders explained both the Ingredients and how it was cooked . Best £9-50 I've ever spent.

We visited midweek at lunchtime. The young lady who served us was great, she was helpful and advised on our choice of meal. The food came quickly and was really tasty. We thought it was good value and would definitely recommend.

Stumbled across this while exploring the shambles for the first time, boy was I lucky! Such an awesome sandwich (got the Reuben), made dead quick and I was able to watch the process through the window! Loved it!
