Shambles Kitchen in York

Had a fantastic sandwich from here today while visiting york, had seen amazing reviews online and they were 100% right ✅️ 😀. Had the rueben sandwich, pastrami based , fabulous taste and presentation, made to order ( they give you a buzzer to signify it's ready ) , worth the price as ingredients top notch , amazing 👏

Stopped in for a quick bite - I have to say one of the most delicious sandwiches I’ve ever tasted. Arrived at 11:50 on a Saturday - there was around a 10 minute wait to order and 15 for the food which I will drop a star for as could’ve been quicker, but my oh my was it worth the wait! Good quality meat, large portion and friendly service.

11/10 - enough said. If theres one place you get lunch in the Shambles, make it here

Amazing Reuben. The beef pastrami was so tender and peppery and all of the ingredients married together beautifully! It was immense and I would return to York just for that! Thanks!

Absolutely huge and delicious sandwiches, a must if you are visiting The Shambles. We tried the Judy Hench and the Trufflepuff, both were amazing!

Amazing food! We tried the Guy Fawkes (brisket) which was sooo tasty and we tried the Harry Trotter which wasn't as flavourful but the meat was of incredible quality. The only downside is that it's a very sloppy sandwhich and there's nowhere to eat it, you're covered in food by the time you've finished because the very-full-bread is served in paper which gets oily. Take your own paper plate/fork!

Top class Reuben and a lovely singing redhead cashier can hopefully make your morning as much as mine

One among the good street food in Shambles Market. Tried Pulled pork and Chicken Shawarma. Worth trying.

A delicious pulled pork sandwich, with friendly and happy staff. I highly recommend it to everyone passing through York! The only downside is that there’s no seating, and the nearby food court tends to get quite busy on weekends.

Outside the shop was buzzing with hungry people feasting and waiting in anticipation. I had the guy fawks and it was insane! My wife had the harry trotter. Which she liked too! The servers looked like they really loved their jobs!

So so so much meat!! Some might complain about the meat to bread ratio but tbh, I'm such a meat-lover so I'm not complaining. Tried the guy fawkes and the sandwich was SOOO juicy and saucy. We shared between 2 people and we were stuffed by the end of it. So worth it.

Had the vegan shawarma wrap, really good with lots of filling & worth the little wait on a busy day. Only downside is that it was quite oily - not for you if sensitive!

Amazing, no other words! Make sure you visit this absolute gem of an eatery in York.

Good sandwich, although the bread was soggy almost instantly so half way through just became a mess. Ruben was very good. Queue was huge but I wanted to try it.

Honestly best sandwich I’ve ever had. Meat juicy, focaccia so soft. Beautiful. Only issue is no seating but that’s not their fault when it’s busy!

Visited here today, tried the guy Fawkes sandwich. Literally one of the best sandwiches I’ve ever put in my mouth, the meat, the bread just unbelievable. Literally could not fault, soooo soo tasty and fresh. Flavours were unbelievable. Cannot recommend enough!!

A lovely kitchen; you head up and order at the window, and there is plenty to choose from. I had the pulled pork, and it was lovely, highly recommended, and reasonably affordable!

Soggy and very expensive bbq beef sandwich. The meat wasn’t good and it burnt my lips because of the overly spicy sauce. Also make sandwiches wider not taller.

Ordered a Trufflepuff (think it's pulled pork, lettuce, parmesan). They give you loads of meat, the sandwich was full, the bread was delicious. I would suggest adding something that can give the sandwich a bit of a 'kick' - either make the parmesan stronger or add something stronger to the sauce just to bring the flavours out more. The bloke at the till was really warm, really welcoming. If I had any advice, I'd suggest that the girl making the sandwiches doesn't speak when she's making them as that's not hygienic - so maybe wear a mask if she wants to speak or don't speak at the time of putting the sandwiches together. I get that she was working hard and was lost in the moment, though. Understandable. Otherwise, a great experience and I will definitely visit again. I want to try all the sandwiches! Forgot to take pictures but it looked amazing!!

Beef Reuben, £10.50, clearly not worth it, there are much better places on the market It doesn't worth it!

Stumbled onto this place while wandering through the Shambles, instantly drawn towards the sandwiches as we love smoked meats brisket, pulled pork etc, after ordering and a short wait we received the beef reuben(Dick Turpin) and the beef brisket(Guy Fawkes), perfectly smoked meat with the additions of the sandwich and wrapped in wonderful fresh bread. It's definitely worth a visit.

The Shambles Kitchen is a very popular choice in the city of York and always has queues outside of it. Also being popular on social media we decided to find out what all the hype is about. The menu is very limited but it doesn’t need to be any bigger as the 4 main choices are very appealing. The staff were very friendly and seemed to very much enjoy their job which was nice to see. Our food was prepared fresh and very professionally. We were given a bleeper that informed us of when our order was ready, and we were presented with a very attractive selection that we had chose - The Guy Fawkes and The Dame Judy Hench. The food tasted amazing and we are glad we have indulged. We probably won’t return again as the prices are quite high for what you get but you can’t knock it for this as it is all about the tourists in The Shambles therefore the higher prices are to be expected.

Good sandwiches and impressive bread. From a pricing point of view, you are eating to have your sandwich at Shambles market. The Dick Rueben would be my recommendation. Definitely worth a nibble.

My partner loved the guy Fawkes and I was so jealous of his sandwich - sadly they don’t do a GF option for the sandwiches. I appreciate it’s a small kitchen but would be amazing to see GF options for the sandwiches!

A very very disappointing visit to shambles kitchen today, tried the shawarma chicken wrap, it was incredibly bland , incredibly beige in presentation, absolutely zero heart and soul had gone into this , it replicated a chicken Caesar wrap from Tescos . It’s such a frustration, as an avid street food fan and a huge champion for the progression of the York food scene, that such establishments become lazy on the passion that got them going in the first place , and end up selling their soul to churn out very mediocre products to the masses . It’s such a shame they become ignorant to the fact, that to elevate a shawarma wrap into a meal that could be remembered, be worthy of posting and sharing, and most importantly recommending, isn’t that difficult to achieve. Please please please cook food you would remember yourself, and would tell all your friends about .

What a great little place, we called here for a quick dinner whilst in York, the food was really good and plenty of it and the lad serving was helpful. 👌🏻

Always wanted to try this and today was the day!! Ordered a Dick Turpin and a Dame Judy Hench! My god this didn’t disappoint! Best sandwich I’ve had in a very long time. Super quick service and fresh produce. It was so tasty I nearly ate the paper it was in! 🤤

Had 3 sandwiches here over a few days. Dame judy hench tasted great would 100% recommend that, the Ruben was good too but not the best I've had but still very tasty and the beef barbacoa was really really tasty 100% recommend that too. There is a market round the corner with tables/ benches where you can sit and eat. The prices are slightly on the higher side but good to eat there and try when visiting York...

What a wonderful barbacoa sandwich, and the kids loved the sparkler on top, too. Some of the best food we've all had in York so far, really loved it!

After seeing a review on tiktok of this place and a few others around and travelling to York that weekend it looked well worth a visit. My wife and I ordered the pork and ham and after handing over nearly £20 for the privilege we were handed this buzzer and told to wait. The place is obviously raved about as the queue for people waiting was massive. I think in total we waited almost 29 minutes for the buzzer to eventually go off, so £20 for 2 Sandwiches and a 20 minute wait cracking stuff. Positives first. It looked amazing, smelt amazing and was a fat looking sandwich. Negatives Couldn't taste any of the meat without pulling it out of the bread due to the sauce being over powering. The bread was soggy due to the amount of sauce. I was still hungry after finishing it. All in all a disappointment and something I wouldn't want to try again.

This place is one of the only reasons we keep coming back to York 😂. These sandwiches are the BEST.

This is the second time eating at the shambles kitchen and it's been fantastic both times. I've tried the trufflepuff and the Judy Hench and both are good, but the Judy Hench is my favourite so far. My partner has had the vegan shawarma twice and loves it. Very quick to order and receive your food, you get a little buzzer that goes off when your order is ready and have only waited 5/10 mins both times. We are from Kent and will stop here on the way up again for sure! Helps that York is a beautiful place 😁

I always stop here for lunch when I'm in York. The pulled pork sandwich is outstanding and the service is great. There's tables behind the restaurant in Shambles market where I can usually find seats.

This place is fantastic, I absolutely love it. Sandwiches are quite pricey but you get what you pay for. They are so delicious and having things like a sparkling stick in the guy Fawkes sandwich just makes it memorable. Would highly recommend

This place had me yearning for their sandwiches from the moment I passed, You can smell here from a street over , Every time, I'd have either eaten, had plans, or a queue as long as the ghost merchants I got the Dame Judy Hench, Had a lovely chat with the woman working there and was given a sandwich that looked like the picture Needs no guesses to say it was absolutely devoured, and I'm now planning a trip back to york just to try the rest of the selection

Daaamn, one of the best sandwiches I've ever had! It could have been a tad bigger, but I'm glad it wasn't as the focus was on the ingredients and they definitely are spot on. Does have a good-sized queue in front with a bunch of instagrammers waiting to take a photo of the guy Fawkes sandwich which comes with a sparkle.

Ordered a Dame Judy Hence and loved it. Sandwiches are on the pricey side but well worth it as you get plenty of fillings!

This is only my second time in York but I can't believe you can get better value street food anywhere else in the city. Outstanding!

If I could, I would give 10 starts. Smelt the food as I walked past and just had to get something. Ended up getting the Harry trotter. Whitch is pulled pork. Card only, which is not a problem. But it's super amazing food. They put a sparkler on top with is a nice touch

The pork has a little fishy smell, it's British pork, but it's still very fragrant! It's very atmospheric, maybe it's winter, the wind is so strong and cold. Next to it is a Harry Potter themed store

Visited York for a couple of days. And can honestly say this place is the does the best sandwich we have ever had. We tried the Dick Turpin and the dame Judy Hench. Both amazing couldn't pick a favourite, so we went back for more to bring home. Overall 100% recommend fresh food, excellent service and the lovely lady who served us WOW she can really sing.

That has got to be the tastiest sandwich that I have ever eaten . I chose the guy fawkes and the young lady taking orders explained both the Ingredients and how it was cooked . Best £9-50 I've ever spent.

We visited midweek at lunchtime. The young lady who served us was great, she was helpful and advised on our choice of meal. The food came quickly and was really tasty. We thought it was good value and would definitely recommend.

I'm not going to lie, I was wandering around getting "hangry" and saw the pictures in the window and thought "this will do, looks good" Woah! What seemed like a small bite when being prepared was a heck of a sandwich and really packed a punch. Pure destiny that my"hanger" had led me here. Beautifully slow cooked meat, lots of flavours, went so lovely with the soft focaccia bread. Thanks Shambles Kitchen 🥳🥳🥳

Fantastic little shop, the pulled pork sandwich has got to be one of the best I've had. Lots of flavour, good size and overall well worth the money. The service today was great, and the workers are very friendly. Thank you! Will be visiting again

Had two very tasty and amazing sandwiches here ! So much so that my son is now moving York uni to his first choice so he can frequently visit the shambles kitchen.also brownies were perfect!!

Fantastic sandwich with lots of flavour - staff are super friendly and the whole experience was lovely. Little pricey but definitely worth it. Planning to go again in November/December.

A few different options, we tried the pulled pork sandwich and it was very tasty; fresh bread, tasty meat and sauce. Waiting time was about 5-7min. I will def go back to try the other sandwiches they offer!

Absolutely the best street food. I stopped by twice, first for the “Harry Trotter” Pulled Pork sandwich, which to my surprise, came with a sparkler tucked in for fun. Talk about a memorable experience. My 2nd visit was for the “Dick Turpin” Beef Reuben. Also a great sandwich with ample mustard and pickles. This is my go to spot for street food in York. Next time I visit, I’ll be stopping by.

Great food for a good price and lovely staff

I've been a loyal customer to Shambles Kitchen for a few years now, I've moved away from York and visit annually. However, when I returned this year the 2 females in the shop were quite obnoxious and sexist. When my husband asked for a chicken wrap they explained that was quite a lot of salad and not much chicken, and said to get a sandwich as they're "much better". This made us both quite uncomfortable. The person serving us was dancing and not really paying much attention to the time to make the food, so gave us a buzzer and said it'll only be a minute, but it was obviously much longer. The food was excellent, as it always is - I was just disappointed in the service. We ate our food on a table in shambles market

Food is very good but the price is way too high. 9,5 pounds for a small sandwich. That’s mad.

Delicious food, I had a small vegan shawarma which was a great portion for the price. Would definitely come here again. Customer service is great too, I was served by the friendly alex :) My partner who is not veggie also said the wrap was amazing!!

Been wanting to try this sandwich for ages now (the camilla) ever since I saw it on Instagram and wowwww it didn’t disappoint!! Packed full of flavour and tonnes of textures going on, so so good. Quite messy to eat so not one to grab on the go / if in a rush. Vegan heaven but they’ve got loads of meat filled options for the meat lovers too

Any sandwich that comes with a sparkler in it, has me at hello. Luckily the sandwiches aren’t just style over substance- god those guys make a great sarnie. We got the Beef Barbacoa and the Reuben. Both sublime, made with care, thought and precision. Were they “cheap” sandwiches? No. Were they worth every penny, absolutely 100% yes. Stacked, flavourful, perfect. Will definitely visit again.
