Really happy with this choice in Maidstone. Quaint pub feel with upscale menu and wonderful bar and service. Fireplace; lots of ambience. Thanks for your very good service. Oh! Want surf and turf? Order in advance if you can for Thermidor Thursdays! It worked out for us which we were happy about. The menu can change and they explain that on their website. They also serve local winery; Balfour Wines, which were lovely (try a flight!). Husband was very happy with his Guinness. Great local spot.

My wife and i had Sunday Lunch today. The staff were welcoming and friendly. However the food was not what I had expected. My wife's starter, whitebait, was acceptable but mine, scallops, was miniscule. The two miniature scallops the size of my thumbnail were overcooked and served with burnt bacon at the inflated price of £14. My wife's main, monkfish was acceptable but very pricy at £28. My lamb shoulder was overcooked, but the vegetables were OK. The portion of extra cauliflower cheese was very small. The dining experience as a whole was underwhelming and expensive. On this experience I will give any further visits to Balfour restaurants a miss.

We were gifted a voucher by our daughter and had not previously visited The Windmill, despite it being not too far away. The reviews we had seen were mixed but we had nothing to lose so wanted to try it for ourselves and comment accordingly. We were greeted warmly by a member of the team who showed us to our table and was our waiter for the duration of our visit. He was friendly and attentive without being intrusive and looked after us well. We considered the express menu, which offers very good value for money, but as this was a treat decided to go for options from the a la carte menu. We shared some plump queen olives and a portion of squid to start then both chose the monkfish with mushroom risotto as our main course. This was a great choice, beautifully presented, flavousome and satisfying. We managed to squeeze in a shared dessert of sticky toffee pudding with ice cream which again was delicious and just rounded the meal off on a sweet note. We liked the quirky surroundings and the overall experience was very pleasant. We will definitely be visiting again.

So disappointing. Was really looking forward to the meal here as previously had good experience. I normally cook for Easter and so this was a treat to go out . Started well with the calamari which was super fresh and hot . However after that it was honestly the worst roast I’ve ever had . The lamb was burnt as were the potatoes. Normally gravy is supplied on the side and you can add as you wish . This was not the case. It was covered in a really rich bitter jus .. it came out like that and everything was covered in it . There was a mouthful of shredded cabbage and an eighth of a carrot covered in the congealed jus . The menu had suggested cauliflower cheese with bacon which sounded lovely but alas it did not materialize. When we politely asked if it was coming, the waitress said no because it was extra although the menu clearly stated it was part of the roast. By This point, I still wanted to desperately believe that mine was just a bad one out of a good batch , but sadly everyone else’s roasts were also lacking. My young daughter, who normally eats anything also didn’t eat her meatballs, so I tried them, and they were just inedible.rock hard and tasteless . Sorely disappointed overall xx

Having lived in the surrounding area for a number of years and dined in most of the venues, we decided to go to the Windmill for the first time . Its reputation historically has been very good and I was expecting a fine dining experience, which was our fault for not checking . I was expecting an exciting menu , but really it was pretty average and limited. Whilst what was served was nice the portions were very small , three bites of the braised beef and it was gone as the rest was fat . Same applied to starters and desert . Service was fine and our waitress was very pleasant . All in all bit of a let down , we came away disappointed with the experience, which maybe to be fare we should have researched first rather that relying on previous recommendations

We came here with some close friends for a Sunday lunch, as we have been many times before and always had a lovely time. As usual the food was stunning, we always go for the roast dinners as they are delicious and a great price. We were served by very nice brunette lady and were having a lovely time for our friends birthday. However after our mains were cleared away we were told by, quite a rude gentlemen, that we needed to leave the table as the next sitting was here. We had not been informed that there was a time limit on our table and it seemed very abrupt that we were suddenly asked to leave. I queried this and said that we were keen to have desserts, to which I was told, by the rude gentleman again, that we couldn’t as we needed to vacate the table. We gathered that he was the manager and so asked for the bill, which was presented by the brunette lady, who did say that if we wanted desserts/coffees we could move to the bar area, which was very lovely of her, however our experience had already been soured by the manager so we chose to leave. It’s quite a shame as this was always our place of choice to bring our friends, however if this is the way the management is going then we certainly won’t be back anytime soon and will not recommend any of our friends to go here either!

We booked Winter break package including B&B and 3 course meal with fizzy flight. Room was lovely however noisy from pub downstairs and cleaner started mopping just after 7am following morning which felt too early with guests sleeping above in rooms we were in Leslie Reserve plus noise from traffic but i get this is an old pub. However, food was delicious 😋 we had the Thermidor Thursday definitely recommended and Phil our waiter really looked after us thank you! And guy at Breakfast was also very attentive! Only staff member we felt was slightly rude was brown haired lady think possibly the manager when I asked to take bottle of tap water to our room she said you already have some provided in room which we'd already drunk earlier! We were only asking for tap water!!!Apart from this small points we would return but not stay.

Visited here on Tuesday for some lunch, booked online but didn’t need to as was empty. Was seated at a table for two but one of the chairs wasn’t a chair was more like a sofa which is fine but then you have to sit on your coat which can be uncomfortable when eating. I have visited here on many occasions so know the menu and know the food is going to be good which it was. The pub was all christmassy in decorations but no music until we nearly left? Needs music for a bit of atmosphere. All round good pub lunch

Excellent food and service. Quality of the food was outstanding (we had duck breast and plaice). Service was attentive but not pushy and the waitress was knowledgable about both the wines and food. Not cheap but reasonable for the quality and service (£130 + tip for two people two courses, a beer, glass of wine, excellent coffees and 2x tawny ports). Nice log fire, fairly crowded but not excessively noisy. Highly recommended.

We visited for an early evening meal after this restaurant was recommended by some local people and we were not disappointed. The only trouble could have been that there was only one veggie meal. I chose this risotto (as the only choice!) and it was really lovely. My friend's lamb was amazing, she said. Then ... the peanut butter ice cream to die for. Attentive staff, pleasant surroundings. Not cheap but well worth it for a holiday meal.

I agree with the reviewer who thinks the brunette is in the wrong job; I think her name is Katherine - she is miserable, disinterested and she doesn’t hide it. Food ok, overpriced but not bad. It’s the staff who ruin it; the brunette either needs substantial training in customer service or to leave the industry altogether. It’s blatant that she hates customers; she made us feel most unwelcome.

My wife and I were really looking forward to our stay at The Windmill, on one of our frequent visits to my wife’s parents. The pub is a gorgeous Grade Two listed building, located in a lovely village. We stayed in room 1 (Leslie’s Reserve). The room including the toilet and shower was clean and had a comfy bed and quality linen. We loved the exposed beams in the bedroom and the clearly original flooring. The toilet seat handle was broken – if you’re claiming ‘boutique’ this should have been fixed. However, it doesn’t take much of a scratch below the surface to find multiple issues. Please take this feedback as constructive as if you check my reviews, it takes a lot to give a negative one. There is a sizable hygiene issue at The Windmill! Had I not paid upfront, I would have only paid a portion and let you chase me for any balance in the civil court! When we got to the room, the provided bottle of water was half full and the 2 glasses were dirty and clearly had been used. When we raised this, the replacement glasses had multiple fingerprints and still weren’t clean (see the photos). We bought our own bottled water. There was only one coffee cup. When we asked for a second one, the When I raised this, the lady who seemed to be in charged, questioned my provided mug clearly hadn’t been cleaned as there was coffee stains in it. The 2 teaspoons still had sticky remanent of coffee in the spoon. view, saying “one of the cups is clean”. I said if one cup and both spoons are dirty, I’m going to assume all of it is unclean! There was no soap in the bathroom for washing hands. When we asked about this, we were told by the lady with brunette hair and a sleeveless top, that they didn’t provide soap for the sink. Upon realising what she was saying, quickly corrected herself and blamed the supplier. Surely, if that was the truth, they could nip to a local shop for soap. It seems we had to wash our hands by stepping in the shower to use the shower gel that was bolted to the shower wall. And this is a ‘boutique’ hotel?? While having a drink in the bar, we overheard the staff slagging off customers at a table. Totally unprofessional. By the way, the lady behind the bar with braids was fantastic. We chose to eat dinner elsewhere after our check-in experience. That brings us to breakfast. The same young lady with brunette had and the same sleeveless top from the day before served breakfast. She is clearly in the wrong job! There was a total lack of engagement. There was no ask to check if our food was OK. Zero engagement. That lady is in the wrong job. She looked miserable and disenfranchised. My wife had poached eggs and the chef clearly can’t cook an egg! They were hard boiled, so my wife left them and effectively paid a full breakfast fee for a slice of dry toast and a coffee. We waited for the brunette lady with the sleeveless top to collect the plates, but this clearly wasn’t happening, so as we left, my wife fed back to the server, while she was near the kitchen, that she left the poached eggs as the yolks were solid. There was a faux apology and she cared so much that as we lingered, she didn’t feed this back to the chef. The chef should be ashamed for delivering poached eggs like that. The above issues are easily fixable. The pub needs strong leadership which the interim manager isn’t doing or doesn’t know how. During the evening, someone asked the interim manager if there was car park spaces out the back and he simply raised his arms and said, “I don’t know, I can’t see from here”. Totally unprofessional. This pub will not survive with the standing interim manager or some of the staff. You need to replace them, especially the brunette lady that wore the sleeveless top and the interim manager. They are damaging your business. We both really wanted to like The Windmill and make it our place to stay when visiting my wife’s parents, but we will not be back.

Not impressed with the food. Double whammy as it was over priced. Expected better steak for £35 and the £30 halibut was also another dissappointment. Service was very poor. It started off good as the starter spicy squid was very good, but all went downhill after that. Table next to us had it worse. It took 25 mins before anyone came over to get their drinks order. No one asked if we wanted more drinks or if we wanted dessert. Experience ruined our Sat evening out.

With my wife for lunch, for starters I had the scallops and my wife had the baked Camembert. Both great but although delicious I would say that for £14 it would have been nice to have been served three scallops. The sauce overwhelmed the two that were served. The Seabass was amazing as was the accompanying tomato and butter bean ragu but I had to order a side dish of Nicola potatoes because the dish didn’t come with any and to be honest it did need a potato dish. My wife had the duck which looked amazing. We both plumped for the white chocolate cheesecake which tasted lovely but it had an unusual light and fluffy mousse like texture and not a more solid cheesecake texture. All in all very good but a couple of niggles.

We went for a meal with our 86 year old relative who is very infirm and has a throat problem, so can’t eat large amounts of food. He found something on the kids menu that would have been perfect, but when it came to ordering we were told that he would be charged double the price (£20) for a kids meal, as he was an adult! When we pointed out that he’d be eating the same amount of food as a child, we were told ‘that was the managers decision as it’s meant for kids’. So we ended up ordering a soup for £7, when the kids meal would have been £10. I pointed out that they would actually be taking less money from us because of their stupid decision to charge double, and was told again it was ‘the managers decision’ Based on observation it emerged that the manager was a guy-chewing female who was sat at one of the dining tables with a laptop whilst there were customers present. At no point did this individual make any effort to engage with us or explain her ridiculous decision. She left her staff to give us the bad news, who I actually felt sorry for as it clearly wasn’t their fault. The only interaction we had with the manager was when she deigned to clear some of our plates without saying a word and leant right over me to pick up the plate. No apology for her decision, no explanation, just silence. The other staff made a lot of effort and salvaged the situation from being a total disaster, but the manager clearly has no people skills, no regard for disabled/elderly customers and has no place working in the hospitality industry. We will never visit the Windmill or any Hush Heath establishment again following the disgraceful treatment of our elderly relative.

Good was fantastic along with great service. Fish was fresh with a nice crispy batter, chips are more like roast potatoes they’re so big!!.. could not fault the food, not sure about £4.80 for a pint of coke from the tap though!!

Eight of us met for an evening meal to celebrate a special birthday. The pub was cosy and welcoming, and despite our varied tastes (ranging from carnivorous to strictly veggie), all thoroughly enjoyed the occasion. The staff were exceptionally pleasant and attentive.

Probably the poorest Sunday roast we've ever had........no Oysters available as a starter which didn't help..............dinner looked like a children's portion, barely enough meat to make half a sandwich, was luke warm and pretty tasteless Left feeling very disappointed, hungry, and ripped off!

Phoned the day before and was told that we didn't need to book a table in order to eat, yet the following day we turned up and was refused food as we hadn't booked a table, even though we were told not to book the day before, wasn't able to book one there and then either, staff weren't accommodating and actually quite rude. We ended up going to the fish & chips

Chilston Manor hotel is a lovely hotel with friendly staff but I and my husband were very disappointed with what they call a luxury afternoon tea…we had three little finger sandwich's with hardly any filling in them….dry scones…what was nice was the sausage roll,we had to ask for the tea as it didn’t arrive, when it did it was stewed & strong…will be returning NO !!!!

What a dirty horrible place everything seems and feels grimly. No body clearing tables. And some staff training in customer service wouldn’t go a miss.

UPDATE… This store has been run into the ground, the lovely staff members have all left, one very nice young man “sacked” for a pathetic reason. We now go to Sainsbury’s and buy large rolls and fillings and make our own. What can one say.... it’s a big roll with filling. Staff mostly friendly. Can run low on fillings towards the end of the day.
