Told me I can’t order food because there isn’t enough chefs and staff was really feeling the sea bass how can you not serve food as it’s a pub restaurant

Incredibly slow service both at bar and to table. Staff seem to not know what is going on. Food was not bad when it came but boy did it take a long time.

Fine place for lunch or an evening meal. My chips looked overdone today but they were fine. Don't forget to register your number plate on the way in or you'll get a fine. Nowhere enough accessible parking spaces, lots of people with blue badges come here and not all of them need an accessible bay. If you do, get there early!

The restaurant has just been refurbished and was warm and welcoming on a cold day. Andrea meet us at the door and was friendly, cheerful and funny. We had a lovely table near the open fire and drinks were brought immediately. The light lunch of pate with toast and a fish finger sandwich was very good. Hot where it needed to be, presented well and delicious. Service was fantastic by Andrea and end of meal transactions were handled well.

We visited for lunch on 8th Jan. As a party of 3 I’m happy to say we all had really nice meals. The pie was very tasty. The fish cakes were nice and the Beef Bourguignon was on the bone and incredibly tender and delicious. Although the prices are high it’s almost the norm now. So if you do want good quality then I suggest a visit.

Jack was amazing, he made the night. He was friendly and professional and I will say that, his bar tending skills were second to none.

We’ve been coming to this pub for over three years and always enjoyed it, but our last visit was disappointing. The beer tasted off, like it had been poured through dirty pipes. When we mentioned it, the staff wouldn’t check or replace it, so I had to leave the glass on the bar and buy another. Hopefully, this was a one-off, but it left a sour impression—literally and figuratively.

Service was slow, food was lukewarm at best. I sent my food back and it was clearly just chucked in the microwave. Plus, my side salad was 3 lettuce leaves and a slice of tomato. We did get 25% off the bill but we won't be going back to eat. Ok place for a drink. P.S not quite sure what was renovated really?!

Christmas lunch (3 course) for 2. Not cheap, but we have dined here before & now that quality is great. (And Christmas only comes once a year). Liked the names & menu choice on cards on table. Plenty of veg & it was fresh, not frozen, like restaurant that we went to in 2022. Am looking forward to next year.

Nothing was great. Everything could have been better. I would give Zero stars if it was an option! - The service was non-existant, we had to ask for our Christmas table to be set, we had to ask for drinks and we had to chase where every single one of our courses were. - It took 3.5 hours to serve us 3 courses, - The food when it came, was beyond poor, 4/7 of our party ordered Hake which came out having been left under a grill for so long to keep warm that it was all entirely overcooked and the sauces had cooked off completely. Also, this was after waiting 2 hours for it to arrive, at which point we were too hungry and tired to ask for it to be re-made…. - There was no accountability for such poor food and service. When complained to the Manager, they just gave a terrible excuse that all our menu choices had disappeared from the system….. they could have asked us and this does not justify the poor food - Having paid over £600 for Christmas Day lunch, this whole experience ruined it.

We thought the the food and drink was great, but after the first course we waited two and a half hours before the main course arrived! I think the usual problem of not enough staff and too many orders , After complaining, we did get a substantial reduction on the bill,

Came here for Christmas dinner £85 per head.. 6 of us. So disappointed. The food tasted ok but the seving staff were awful. I do understand it sucks to work christmas day ... there weren't enough staff for the amount of customers. 6 of us has paid near enough £500 just for the food and we never want to eat out again

5 of us went for a Christmas meal. It was awful. We waited an hour for our starters which were not particularly good. Then our main meal (we all went for the traditional Christmas Turkey) was really bad. It was cold, the veg was terrible, roast potatoes were the worst I’ve tasted. No pigs in blankets and the tiniest sliver of stuffing. We had a side order of cauliflower cheese, again the worst I’ve ever had, literally no cheese. Worst roast I’ve ever!!! We then had to wait over an hour for our desserts. Would not recommend

12:45pm - Asked for a table for 7 people and high chair was plenty of space. Pub didn’t seem to be too busy or full. Said I could have two tables pushed together at the left of the pub. But couldn’t have any food. Seemed odd to me that they wouldn’t want to make £30 ish a head on food. So we just had drinks. The manager said they had to have the table back in the evening as they had a party coming in. Only an hour later, 1:45 they sent a different member of staff over to ask us to leave as they need the table back for 2pm. Management was hardly professional. They can’t cope with the demand for the size of the pub. Clearly all of the budget was spent on the interior design and not employing staff or staff management.

Well where to start,meal booked for 1pm 23-12-2024 arrived on time and seated ordered drinks from extremely polite young man who also came back to take our orders.starters for 4 and mains were ordered and waited approx 40 minutes for starters waiter came to take dishes away and to apologise and told us the 3 beef and venison pies ordered had now sold out by which time we had been there about 1hour and a half my 3 companions then had to reorder and went for 2 fish and chips and one ribeye steak fish dishes were fine steak was good but chips cold my smoked haddock fishcakes were not Smokey at all and the whole meal was Luke warm and not very appetising our waiter was very apologetic and we told him not to worry as it wasn’t his fault I could have complained but was concerned however as to how much longer we would have to wait as we had now been in the restaurant 3 hours,surely whoever was preparing the food would have known how many pies were left and not left it so late to tell customers,to say we were disappointed is an understatement. The management did take off the price of the 3 meals which is fine and we thank them for that but I have to say it did spoil our pre Christmas meal so it will be a while before we return. Awful food - most of our food was cold. mash had been microwaved leaving the print of the packaging. Fish batter raw , chicken charcoaled and left to go cold. Would not recommend eating here

Food was terrible, chips came out cold, mash was clearly microwaved from a packet. Chicken skewers were burnt and dry. Waited 50 minutes for this level of food... Only upside was the waitress was nice and friendly and the pub had good decor. Would avoid, other vintage pubs serve the same menu with a far better quality of food.

There was 6 of us dining & place was very busy. 4 of us very happy with food but the 2 that had Xmas platter said great Turkey but veggies were bit soggy hence 4 stars there. Good portions. Cameron was absolutely amazing giving great service & was extremely polite. Sophie also pleasant & helpful. Will visit again. Hope standard keeps up. Well done!

Visited today for breakfast with santa. The lady at the front desk couldn't find my booking, I explained that I booked over the phone with a man, as she was looking I scrolled through my call list to find the date and time I called as proof I did book. She was very dismissive. Wasn't interested in looking at what i was showing her. I did this so that they can maybe speak to the man who was working that day. She told us we couldn't sit with our friends and we can only sit at a table of four when there was 6 of us. Apparently no spare chairs in the whole pub. After speaking to the manager they moved us with our friends with no problems. Customer service skills lacking. Santa was great! I think he needs a job at the willy wicket.

We had breakfast with Santa and the food was amazing! Delicious breakfasts, great service and a lovely experience for the kids.

Service was awful from one particular member of staff, L, on the bar, which is a shame because the others were nice and pleasant with what little interaction I had with them. I arrived in a good mood, very quickly got put in a foul mood which had a knock on all evening. Food wasn't great either. Good Guinness, but not enough to make me want to come back again.

Thought we’d try after the new refurb. Service was probably the worst I’ve seen in a pub for a long time. 1 hour wait for food (with no warning), chips were like dry cardboard and burger I would describe as a cremated disc. Don’t bother until service/ management improves. Won’t be returning and agree with the other bad reviews on here.

Bonny, our waitress was lovely and friendly. Food was nice and tasty, piping hot when got to our table. Desserts were a tad overpriced.

Very great place for a fantastic meal

Pre-ordered Xmas meal for 14. Table booked for 7.30. Soup didn't arrive until 8.30. Main meal arrived at 9.15 and dessert 10pm. Soup was nice and hot. Main meal was abysmal. Cold meat, cold veg, cold gravy which was returned. When 2nd gravy came it was still cold. Potatoes looked as if they'd been fried more than once. Complained and received 50% reduction. Won't be going there again.

Lovely food and varied menu, but the desserts were very slow, had to chase them up and then they arrived promptly. Needs to get a bit better organised as it was busy but not absolutely full.

I rarely give negative reviews if at all possible not to but in this case I have to , firstly I don't blame the young staff who were obviously inexperienced and couldn't really care too much, the fault is with the management, the waiting staff just gave no acknowledgement of our presence and I had to ask for order to be taken after some quite considerable time, our starters came after over an hour and mains had to asked for when my patience eventually ran out , when our tepid food arrived the waiting staff didn't apologise for 2 hour wait, in fact they were obviously annoyed we had to ask for our food and probably thought we should have just sat quietly, we eat out 3/4 times a week and quite frankly this is the worst experience I've had for some time.

Went for dinner with friends on 14th December. Service was very slow. We ordered starters and main Starters came to the table at different times. Then main meals arrived before the starter plates had been cleared away. The food on the maincourse was cold. Considering the prices we would had expected better service and food. Will not be going back in a hurry. They need to get organised.

A bit disappointed with our first visit to the Willy Wicket since it re-opened. No butter with the pate starter, lamb and chicken skewers were quite dry, burger came with salad after asking for it to be taken out. No condiments offered when meals arrived and not asked if we wanted more drinks so had to go to the bar and get our own. This was the busiest I'd seen lunchtime in there for a long time and appreciate it's close to Christmas but the quality of food and service was not the best.

Came for a 70th birthday meal with 5 people Very long wait for drinks and food Serval things unavailable,items missing when food arrive and meals only warm not hot. Not very polite staff member when we had a problem with a main meal which left 1 member of our party not getting their main meal till 15 minutes after the rest of us had finished our meals. I will say the young girl that served us was lovely the manager could do with lessons from her on how to treat customers Such a shame as right on our doorstep but won't be going back Thanks for your generic reply however all 5 of us have no intention of returning,problems with food i can forgive as everyone has a bad day but rude staff is something I don't have time for when there is plenty of other friendly pubs in this area

Used to be amazing. However an hour wait for our mains sent me into a diabetic hypo. As i have to give my insulin 20 minutes before eating but if wait longer it puts me into a medical danger. Not sure we will be returning. Lots of other customers complaining and walking out too.

Service was great. We arrived later on the Sunday, so menu was limited… Umm, I would say the food was nice. I just chose the wrong main dish. Also, the actual pate was small in proportion to the rest of the starter. However, the waitresses were attentive, warm and friendly.

Had a lovely meal tonight at the Willy Wicket, we were greeted and sat very quickly and had great service from Cameron, our food was great, and we enjoyed a drink by the bar after our meal, over all great experience!

Lovely evening, food was great and the service was brilliant, Abi was fab and really attentive. The prawn and scallop starter was dreamy and for mains the chicken burger and lamb skewers were delights. Lovely atmosphere, will be back!

Attended as a group of 12 for a Christmas meal tonight. Absolutely shocking wait times, almost an hour wait for our drinks, followed by over an hours wait for our food. When dessert came, one persons was missing so they had to eat it on their own after everyone else had finished. Will not be going there again, completely ruined our evening.

UPDATE:.... the pub has just had a facelift and it seems to have breathed new life into it. We went on Sunday 24th nov. It was really very nice. The food has improved significantly from earlier experience and although the roast trio was £22 I would say it was worth it. Well done to the chef and the serving staff … we really enjoyed it. One little suggestion is maybe to have some gentle piano music to add to the atmosphere and to break up the conversations of people sat near. But overall the new chairs and table added to a very nice experience. Finally when booking on the app I asked for a seat near the window which was exactly where we sat. ORIGINAL REVIEW: WELL....my expectations were quite low to start with as I've been to this pub a few times.on this occasion as its within walking distance and the memory of the last offering had faded a little we bit the bullet (in the case of the rice not much difference). I had the chicken curry. friends had bass and a burger. I can tell you categorically ... mine was the first dish prepared. in the middle of the pate was a block of crispy hard rice coupled with dried out chicken. it wasn't worth the calories as they say on bake off. I normally don't let rubbish like this go by, but I was with friends and didn't want to create a fuss. the burger was ok.. just a bit cold and the bass was nice. sadly, the quality varies that much from nice to poor all in one serving let alone from reservation to reservation. The bar staff need to smile a bit more too (but it's understandable why they don't).

Went after the re-opening hoping the food would be a bit better - was very average. High chair was taken off us after our mains, despite us having dessert as they didn’t have enough. Too expensive for average food.

The pub refurb gave a very welcoming and relaxing environment. My husband and myself opted for skewers, chicken and Lamb and would recommend. Cooked & tasted great. Price was not to different to centre of Bristol/ Bath so leanining towards higher than average for the area of Dowend .

Love the Willy Wicket! Great food, good selection of real ale and staff always happy to chat to regulars. Keep it up

although apparently this was the last day before closing for 3 weeks , the food being served was below par. the brie bites starter was served without a sauce , wilted rocket and a load of pumpkin seeds thrown on a plate. the roast dinners came with burnt parsnip , no cracking with the pork and dry over cooked beef there was not enough gravy , so had to ask for more there was no horseradish sauce service was slow , to take order and also clear plates away , even though there could have been more staff , the ones , on could be seen chatting at the bar person serving was very abrupt

Come here regularly with a group of friends on a Monday night for drinks and food, and for occasional meals at other times. Never had a bad meal. Great service! Sophie in particular has been amazing and is very welcoming and friendly!

Had a mid-week meal at this old English-farmhouse style pub. The welcome was friendly and the menu choice made it difficult to choose but i went for the ribeye steak which was done to perfection and served with triple cooked chips and succulent veg. The service was great, and by my own admission I can be very picky about how my beef is cooked the cut and taste were superb. The selection of lagers to wash the meal down included a few of my favourites and the atmosphere was just right- buzzing but not too loud with pleasant banter. Great meal out!

We have just had a very tasty meal... Thoroughly enjoyed by myself and three friends! We will definitely be back to try something else on the menu!! The staff could not be more friendly or helpful, and added to the relaxed and friendly atmosphere. The only downside was... Not having enough space for another dessert! We called in on Weds afternoon around 3/330. We ordered a few starters and chorizo to wait. The king prawn cocktail had 10 prawns and NO Avocado. The Camembert came with dead leaves !!! In edible but Camembert was tasty. The sticky chicken was just 3 small pieces of chicken which was ok. Chorizo was good and the Scoth egg ok. We didnt complain as the young lad serving had told us he was on his 4th shift. He was pleasant enough. He was working alone but there was only a couple of other people in there. To say we were disappointed is and understatement . I should have taken photo and complained but just a warning to others

We'd booked a table for 8.30 but arrived late due to a motorway closure, it was more than half an hour after they'd stopped taking orders. We didn't expect anything but they were fantastic and took our order. Not only that but the sea bass and sauce were just gorgeous. Sophie is a star. We were knackered and a bit fed up but she sorted our food and drinks and helped us forget a stressful day and we had a great evening. Cheers Sophie and also the kitchen staff for going the extra mile.

Had a fabulous experience here on 4-10-24. Had a table booked for 20:30, even though we turned up 45 minutes late, due to a 5 hour drive, traffic trouble. Food stops serving at 21:00, they still accommodated for me and my partner. So welcoming and friendly. I had been having a high anxiety day and within minutes of arriving here I felt at ease. Fabulous staff, amazing food and the building speaks for itself.

Sunday lunch for 5 booked. Table was for 2:15, didn’t get seated until 2:45. Didn’t order until 3:15. Potato’s and broccoli rock hard, coffee cold. Had to get up to pay as we were basically ignored. Really poor.

I'm sure this is a great pub had it not been for the large parking fine I received! I went there with work and didn't even go inside (sat in garden with colleagues) so was not even aware of having to pay to park. I spent a good amount of money, maybe £30+ on food and drinks. I'm now receiving threatening letters from a debt agency- even though my boss has spoken with management and we were told the fine would be written off! A real shame, as has put a bitter taste in my mouth and am reluctant to return.

As a family we love this pub, it is a really cozy spot, perfect for a laid-back meal or a few drinks with friends. It's set in an old dairy farm, which gives it a nice rustic vibe, especially with the open fire going in the colder months. The menu has all the classic pub grub you'd expect, like pies and fish and chips, and the portions are always perfect. The staff are super friendly and always helpful, making it a great place for families or a relaxed dinner. We eat here fairly often as a family so know the place well, I think we've had most of the menu by now! A special shout-out goes to Leighanne, who always makes our time here better. She is always super friendly, attentive, and makes sure we have everything we need throughout the meal. The outdoor seating is also a big plus, especially in the summer when you can chill out in the garden with your meal. With a great selection of drinks and super welcoming staff this place is a must visit

Went there for a couple of drinks only, good bar and choice of beers. Lots of parking. I do not like the necessity to register your car as a customer, but I understand why.

Had an excellent lunch at the Willy wicket. Tuesday 17/9, the atmosphere was spot on, music up, fire lit which was so cosy, and the team were attentive and friendly. Highly recommended and look forward to seeing the pub post remodel!

Five of us went for an early evening meal here. The food was very good but the service was terrible. We waited over half an hour for them to take the order and then another half hour wait for the food.

We Booked in advance to have a meal. When we arrived we were taken to a table that was right in the Sun. I asked to draw the blinds on the large window in front.I was told there isn’t one, it was broke. The table was sticky and dirty the chair had a cushion fitted to the top which was covered in dirty food stains I ordered a pint of beer it had loads of bits floating in it. I pointed this out to the barmaid who was also the manager Her reply was that the barrel must be running out. No apology. No offer to change the beer. That was her answer. We ordered food which took a ridiculous amount of time to come out when it did. It was all overcooked. It had been cooked and left under something to keep it warm. It was so hot you couldn’t eat it and overcooked. when I pointed this out to the waitress she said oh sorry I don’t know what I can do about it. Do you want to speak to the manager? I did say yes. When the Manager eventually came over she said, “well I haven’t been in the kitchen today, I don’t know why the food is coming out like that”. We can’t do anything about the sunlight coming through the window because there isn’t a blind there, I asked her why when I told her my beer had bits floating in it she didn’t even apologise and she answered, “Oh I should’ve done”, she then offered a discount or would wipe the bill. That wasn’t why we went for a meal. You expect what you pay for and you don’t expect the Manager not to make an effort when you make a complaint. We will not be going to the Willywicket anymore, I give them 0 out of 10.
