Really great Sunday lunch. 2 of our party are veggie and their's was great too. Superb.

Very friendly pub, with a pub type menu, good honest food, at a good price. No complaints.

What's a find. The staff are really friendly and the landlord could not do enough for us. It was fascinating to hear about the history of this place. The pub quiz was great fun as well.

Absolutely fantastic pub. All the staff were so welcoming and friendly. We stopped here for food before heading to an event for the evening and we were made to feel very welcome. We were even asked to stay and join in with the quiz. Food was lovely and a lot of it at a very reasonable price too. We will definitely be coming back again.

Found this place by looking on Google Maps for somewhere for 10 people to eat on my birthday before heading to a local event. From the initial phone call to book a table I knew we’d be looked after well! Friendly landlord with the same sense of humour as us lot! Lovely staff too, made to feel completely at home. The food was delicious and plentiful. As we are into paranormal and history we were told of the tragedy which happened across the road with the train crash and how the Tavern was used as a morgue at the time. The landlord then took us down into the cellar area for a look around and to show the exact area of the temporary morgue. There was a really fun quiz after, where you use a phone app and the whole pub takes part! We will be returning for another fun night some point soon! Thank you guys for an amazing birthday meal!

Well what can I say? In 30 years this pub hasn't changed. It has the same people talking and fighting about the same idiotic subjects. The only difference now, is a Tory at the helm.. Little Britain personified.

Absolutely disgusted with the way the so called manager spoke to my wife. Asked for my wife's number whilst I was in the toilet. Made our drinks there that night very uncomfortable. What a disgusting person. I will be seeking advise further for the way you spoke to my wife and the continued racism you had towards others in the bar.

awful pub the landlord is rude made me and my partner feel very uncomfortable, talks to his customers with no respect! dogs running round my alderney mother almost tripped over one of them not to mention the smell of wet dog i’d never go back there again i feel like my money has gone to a arrogant horrible man

Superb Sunday Dinner massive plus dogs welcome food was superb and plemtiful Beef Sunday Roast cauliflower cheese the best taste carrots parsnip roasties cabbage even pigs in blanket will definately be back polite friendly quick service definately worth a visit!

Had a meal from standard menu. I was accommodated even though the kitchen was over-run with pre-ordered Christmas lunches.

Looking for a local pub in the area where we were staying for the first time . Was hoping for food unfortunately they do not do food on a Monday or Tuesday. However, the bar woman was very knowledgeable and friendly recommended a few places to eat, even offered to look for us . This pub has a lovely atmosphere, Shane we wasn't staying longer

Had Sunday lunch with the family, landlord was great, rushed off his feet but had time for us and gave us options outside the laid down menu, exceptionally accommodating to our requests, excellent roast meal, everyone very happy. Even had a chat with the chef afterwards.

Very welcoming with a late lunch party of 11 (15 minutes notice) on a busy Sunday. More food than we could eat and reasonably priced. All good!

Friendly and comfortable place. Not a very wide selection of beer on tap though.

I’d like to say a massive thank you for accommodating 11 of us for Sunday lunch at such short notice. The pub was absolutely perfect and the food was stunning! Just what we needed. Service was fab, the landlord had only been there 3 weeks and he made us feel like we were his family, a true gentleman! The chef was also the shame and even came out to thank us after our meal. The pub also has a very cute cocker spaniel dog called Teddy, who was a hit with our party! I would 110% recommend this pub to anyone! Thanks so much again! Xx

Lovely food and service, will definitely visit again.

A new publican has taken over on the 1st July 2023 and is making every effort to turn the pub around. I was impressed with his energy and enthusiasm. A new very experienced chef is sending out superb meals.

Really well priced, customer service was impeccable and food was a lot better than the price point implies.

Want here for Sunday lunch and was super disappointed. Worst roast of my life. Dry, bland and everything tasted like it had been microwaved from frozen. Would've probably had a better experience buying one of those roast ready meals from asda. Staff are friendly but that's about all that was positive.

Met with a colleague for a coffee and chat at the Railway Tavern. Located just off the M5 this was the ideal place for a quick catch up.

Closed when website said it should be open.

New Landlord, such friendly service and very accommodating. Didn’t expect much, but the food was simple yet tasty and a really great price. All they need is one great draft craft beer and it would get 6stars.

Went in there with two of my friends only to have the staff be rude to us and talk down to us. Food came out and it was beyond awful the atmosphere is total off the owners look miserable to say the least. Definitely will not be returning and would not recommend to anyone.

Went there with my family... the staff were extremely rude an older man and a grumpy looking older woman were both so miserable it made me feel uncomfortable. There was a fight that kicked off and my children were terrified. They did not handle it at all well... and on top of that the food was completely tripe and overpriced. Will not be returning.

We went on Saturday night , they have put a massive effort into covid safety , and a new play area , really smart garden area and under cover area (could do with heater in the covered area) but that said we had a great time , outside lights made you feel like you were abroad on holiday , atmosphere was really fun no idiots ! we did not eat but the food coming out looked really nice , our gins were lovely , ale selection is poor doom bar technically not ale is all that’s available Maybe more May 17th ! 🙏 Loving the new look everyone one working hard to make your time there the best ! Thanks guys well done

Really friendly staff. Nice outside area. Small covered area. Plenty of parking. Limited ale selection. Only Doom bar Food was ok (carrot and coriander soup with sour dough bread) not packed with flavour but nice. Soup and half a pint £6.49

We were near Kemble and my daughter was needing the toilet, and it was 12pm so we thought we would stop in a pub and she could use the toilet and we could grab some lunch and drinks. We went in and straight away got asked where my mask was. Daughter went to the toilet at this point. I explained I was exempt and staff member said where is your exemption card? I said I didn’t have one but I could show him an exemption on the government website (the same ones that are printed off). He said I couldn’t come in without an actual card. I said he was discriminating against me and was risking a £9k fine. He said I don’t care and I don’t have to serve you and could I get out! By this point another member of the team, a rather aggressive woman came over and told me to get out of the pub. I was trying to explain that I was grateful for the use of the loo and didn’t want to just use the pub as it was rude and we were willing to eat there and spend some money (the pub was completely empty at the time). They kept pushing me to get out and I said I was waiting for my daughter to come back from the loo and they were getting really angry and told me to get out. I will be lodging a complaint for discrimination. It really upset me earlier, felt I was fighting two people, both had masks covering their faces and they looked very intimidating and I am ashamed to say it brought me to tears.

Nice pub and great food, all the better for being half price. Went lunchtime and service was quick and very friendly.

An excellent old fashioned type pub. All the staff were friendly, but efficient. Even though there were Covid restrictions it was very well organised and you did not feel uncomfortable at all. Good selection of real ales and a very good menu. Food was excellent.

It was amazing before, since they have reopened (post lockdown) they have been amazing. With alot additional seating out side, table service and you can pay at the table aswell. What more can you want. All i can say is AMAZING!

I use to work there and the owners were extremely rude and ignorant. The food are ready made.

Lovely Meals and friendly Waitress too.

We arrived at the tavern at around 11 and we ordered sandwiches thinking it would be quick as we had places to be. It took an hour before they even considered to prepare it so we had no choice but to cancel our order of a basic sandwich. Awful place and bad customer service. Have a good day

Nice for lunchtime pub food from work

The web site is misleading as some of the menus are just not available - "not under the control of the pub". When offered a menu that was "available" when ordering from it, none of the deep fried stuff was available - no chips, no fish. Even when it was stated that the menu was on. Very poor. Will not be back.

Really good pub with good atmosphere and good food. The quiz night on a Thursday is really good fun and definitely worth a go. Very funny and a good night out. That's what we go for :)

Had a lively meal Saturday night

Website says they serve food until 6pm. We arrive at 4pm to be told they have finished serving meals for the day. Barman was very unfriendly and argued that we must have been looking at wrong website. No apologies when we showed him their website. Place looked very uninviting so we probably had a lucky escape.

Stops serving food at 8pm which is very disappointing especially as it’s the only pub in the village doing food at all

Visited 3 times since moving to the village, wanted to give benefit of the doubt regarding food but it is really poor. Everything is frozen and heated up (within an inch of its life) burgers that make Mcdonalds look like the finest cut of fillet steak, nachos that are burnt and taste more like puff pastry, scampi that are just greasy breadcrumbed fat balls with no obvious sign of scampi. I assume there is no chef as they wouldn't be required here. As its CURRENTLY the only food option in the village I guess they can get away with sub standard. Oh and they are a 'dog friendly' pup with a 3 barks and you're out rule. We have 2 rescues and one will bark at other dogs, but will stop as soon as they are gone. So the owner bringing his own dog out and lingering right by us on his way out and way back was a fine way to bait ours. I imagine his doing this was prompted by a complaint from the Friday lunch crew in the next room. He decided to not even allow us to finish our meal before coming over and telling us that our badly behaved dogs were not welcome, but we were OK to stay and finish our meal. Strangely he couldn't recall our dog reacting in exactly the same way the last time we visited, when he said nothing. 'That must have been my son' .. no pal it was you. The correct thing would have been let us finish and have a word when we wanted to pay. We have visited pubs all over the country where our one dog will bark at another dog, strangely other 'badly behaved' dogs seem to sometimes do the same, but we've never been met with this reaction by an owner.

Popped in for lunch with my daughter. Had a delicious sharing platter in a cosy corner booth. Friendly staff.

Tired, cold and hungry we were thrilled to stumble across this warm and friendly pub. We had a delicious meal, beef and ale stew served in an enormous Yorkshire pudding with beautifully cooked vegetables for only £9.95. Our waitress was really nice and friendly. A great find.

A good cosy, country pub; a little on the snug side when it gets busy. Not the cheapest, but a good atmosphere.

Lovely little pub in Charfield. Food is decent and fairly priced. Good selection of draft and bottled beers / ciders. Staff are also friendly.

Food was great apart from the freshly cooked bread. They don't seem to get that bread shouldn't be a doughy mess when cut open, even commenting that it should be doughy and inedible. Avoid the bread but go for the food as it is generally excellent.

Didn't whip the glasses away as soon as taken the last sip like lots of pubs do now. Appreciate that makes me feel welcome. Gorgeous wine. Running duck. Deffo our local and at the end of the road what more can you ask. Good food cooked well and served quickey at realistic prices.

Overall, I like this pub. It’s a nice little place with friendly and helpful staff, who provide good service. The atmosphere in the pub is quite nice. I’ve knocked a couple of stars off for the quality of the food, which can be very variable. It’s always served quickly and it’s a good price, but don’t expect any miracles in that department.

I can agree that it is the best in the area as it is the only "food" pub in the area. I tried the Sunday roast, I'm sorry I did, I should have known when they couldn't/wouldn't give the source of their meat, the roast beef was so overcooked, dry and completely brown, I was tempted to resole my shoes with it. You could knock out a horse or a tooth with the roast potatoes, to my dismay, the menu stated mashed potatoes, when asking where that was, just told no mash, I'm assuming it was a DIY mash as they provided boiled potatoes instead, not the kind that fluffs or mashes though... poor quality food, poor service. They do manage to save themselves with two generous stars because their alcohol is as good as there food and service is poor. I highly recommend this place if you have masochistic tendencies or just love bad food or I guess if you like a nice drink. Also no toilet paper. But that happens...
