With my partner away visiting family I decided that, rather than cook, I would treat my Son to lunch at this (highly recommended) and since 1982, family-run pub. The pub about 20 minutes’ drive from home offers dine-in food only; i.e. no take-away or delivery services (hoorah). I had made a reservation a few days before. When we pitched up, with a few minutes to spare, the bar was absolutely rammed. The bar TV was showing live 6-Nations Rugby (France vs. Italy). We had to fight our way to the bar to check-in for our reservation. We were escorted through the remainder of the bar area up a few steps and into a quieter (in fact almost empty) area called “The Dining Room”. We immediately ordered drinks; water for myself and a J2O drink for my Son. Drinks soon arrived and we studied the menus provided. We were however both far-more interested by the plats listed on large specials board, mounted on the wall adjacent to our table; well we could hardly miss it! I love to eat fish, so the “Prawn, Mussel, Cod & Salmon Fish Pie, topped with lemon thyme crumb, with garlic bread” was exactly what I fancied. My Son similarly with the “Pan Fried Salmon with a beurre sauce, crushed new potatoes and tenderstem broccoli”. So when the waiter arrived to take orders my Son chose to start with “Pork Belly bits with a BBQ glaze” followed by the aforementioned salmon. I chose the “Breaded Brie & Sweet Chilli Jam” followed by the fish pie (both my plats from the specials board). With orders placed we sat back, relaxed and sipped our drinks. After a couple of minutes our waiter re-appeared and announced that specials were not available on Sundays. I was gutted! We had to completely revise our orders and select from plats entirely from the menu. My Son stuck with the “Pork Belly Bits”, and followed this with “Fish and Chips” (with mushy peas and tartare sauce). I would observe that a lot of disappointment would have been avoided if there was a simple (possible removable) sign placed on the Specials Board saying (“Not on Sundays”). Ultimately my choice of starter was the “Breaded Haddock Fishcakes, with warm tartare sauce and salad leaves”, and I followed this with the “Homemade Signature Pie: Traditional buttery pastry incased pie” (i.e. ‘encased’ pie) with seasonal vegetables, chips and gravy”. I wonder if professionally printed menus, such as these, have been spell-checked before printing! The starters were promptly served and really very good. My two fishcakes were very pleasant indeed; having a mild curry flavour. The fishcake’s crispy outer shell was a good foil to the smooth paste-like filling. The accompanying green leaves were good and fresh. I had been expecting one fishcake as per the menu; but two arrived and later I noted that my printed receipt stated I had “Sweet Potato Cod Fishcakes” and I did not recall any Tartare Sauce. I remain confused, but contented, having enjoyed what I ate. My Son enjoyed his starter, and certainly the fish on his main plate; which was huge and beautifully cooked. My Son commented that the tartare sauce was really good. I sampled some, but it lacked any astringency; something that is ‘a must’ in any tartare sauce I am to enjoy. My Son said the chips were good, but the mushy peas remained totally untouched (a ‘texture-thing’ issue). As I really so-fancied the fish pie special, my “Signature Pie” main was always going to be a bit of an anti-climax. The pie looked very ‘factory made’; far too uniform, I suggest, to be anything other than ‘bought-in’. I had the ‘Beef and Mushroom’ variety and it was very, very tasty, and very, very hot. There wasn’t a lot of meat in the pie; but what there was, was well trimmed and reasonably tender. The plentiful lovely rich gravy inside the pie helped, but there too few mushrooms. Only about half of this hot water crust pie had filling; the rest was just steam. The veg really didn’t suit or impress me at all: a desert-spoon sized portion of pureed root veg, a dessert-spoon sized serving of a spring cabbage, and a single small piece of roasted carrot (yes: veg was a fail). Half of my plate was taken up with the dripping-cooked chips; these tasted ‘above average’. The dressing of pea-shoots on the pie was a good-touch, really-enjoyed. We did ‘do-dessert’ my Son enjoyed his good “Chocolate Brownie and ice cream” and my “Apple and Cinnamon Crumble” was also good (but I have had better). Service was quite slow at times (especially as service progressed), and most of the tables in “The Dining Room” that had been untaken were gradually filled with diners. Value for money? I’m not sure; £32 a head for 3 courses with one soft drink (latter at £2.50) seems in order but, apart from the fish and chips, portions were quite small. I feel torn because there were many positives, but I can only positively rate this experience as ‘Average’, ‘Very Good’ or ‘Excellent’. Sadly, there were some negatives too; so an ‘Excellent’ rating has not been earned. I feel our experience was better than ‘Average’ but not deserving of ‘Very Good’; so it was ‘Good’ (7 out of 10).

Given the price of the food, they skimped on the portions. Hardly a dollop of cauliflower and cheese, half a parsnip and half a carrot. Come on seriously!

Went for the home made Riser Beefburger and chips and was well worth the wait for it to be freshly prepared. Chocolate brownie and ice cream too all washed down with more than one (!!) Hop Union Maiden Voyage. Great to find good beer at under £4 a pint these days. A return visit definitely on the cards (or bus!!).

Nothing wrong with the food but the service was appalling. Ate our main course, waited for someone to come and take dessert order, no one came. Decided to skip dessert and just have coffee. Went to bar to order. Young man wasn't sure if coffee machine was still on.( 9:10 ) Decided it was. After waiting 20 mins drinks finally came. Drinks were not very warm and I was told the machine wouldn't do my latte. They appear to be more interested in the people in the bar than customers eating. Will certainly not be going back.

After someone finally cleared plates nobody came back to ask if we wanted dessert. Finally decided to skip dessert and order coffee. Again on one appeared. We went to the bar and asked for coffee. Guy wasn't too sure if machine was still on. It was but when he brought it through to us it was luke warm and not nice. I had ordered a latte which I never got. We waited for something to come and take money. That didn't happen either. We paid at the bar. Disappointed as it was my friends birthday treat and it was very much spoilt by the lack of service. They seemed to be more interested in the people in the bar. We will mot be going back.

Not easy to find somewhere that can provide meat, veggie and vegan options but the menu here manages it. Sunday roast menu had a good range, we had pork belly, nut roast & veggie sausage roasts (the veggie sausage one is advertised as “small roast” but we asked for normal size. Homemade pies of the day were tasty (steak or broccoli and stilton) and a decent portion of fish and chips. Great range of accompanying veg including cauliflower cheese and red cabbage. As we had booked a table for 9 at their last sitting for food on a Sunday (5.30) they rang and asked us to pre-order food and this meant that everything was quick and accurate. Desserts were delicious, biscoff cheesecake, fudge chocolate and biscoff sundaes. Only vegan pudding option was sorbet but otherwise good selection including over 10 icecream flavours.

Edit from a previous negative experience below !! * I am highly disappointed from my recent booking today 5-3/23 at 12pm. My gf booked online for 2 persons. We were seated in the dining room , not the conservatory which was kinda ok initially although the decor felt like a holiday inn room. The Meal came quickly yet we were expected to share 1 tiny platter of veg and a small ramekin of cauliflower cheese, thought the server would bring the next portion of veg but nothing came . How is a single meal the same veg and cauliflower cheese for a couple when it’s double the price ? My dinner was not enough of a portion either. If this wasn’t bad enough that our dinner wasn’t fully equipped we had the whole football team next to us drinking eating crisps , swearing , shouting , my girlfriend being pregnant is not something I want to be around or expect when having a roast dinner in a dining area. Not once did the server offer to move us , check on us ( my dinner needed more gravy , where as my partners was swimming in it ), we were just left there. I couldn’t even speak to my partner during our whole meal and couldn’t wait to leave. The ambience was of a social club not a family dining. This was our first time and we are local residents and will not be returning or recommending. I would of complained whilst I was there but I just couldn’t wait to leave and the bar server wouldn’t of been able to hear me and I didn’t fancy shouting across the bar to explain my dissatisfaction. (We had to fight our way through the people at the bar drinking and queuing to get anyone’s attention and pay) I paid £34.35 for this disaster. If you are out with mates then it’s ok to drink but with a partner or kids avoid like the plague *Update* Since this review they reached out and offer to sit us for free. We attended today and were sat in the conservatory part !! This made a massive difference - the customer service was awesome and the food and atmosphere was much better !! Based off this experience I would now recommend this place and will come again with my partner ! Thanks it really shows that you care about the customers !

This pub was recemmended to me by a friend. We booked a table in the conservatory which was light and airy. Good British food, decent helpings and a sensible price. Highly recomended.

Food and service were great, excellent place to stop en-route to Wales. The Meat Feast pizza was particularly nice.

The Boars Head in Aust is in an amazing location and is a beautiful, traditional pub with a really comfortable and welcoming atmosphere. The hosts and staff are always so friendly and attentive, you’re made to feel right at home every time you visit. The food is excellent quality, very reasonably priced, and the portions are huge! They also have a great selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, and the desserts are absolutely stunning, definitely worth leaving some room for! The beer garden is fantastic, there’s a lovely patio area with heaters and a big grassy space with benches, a bouncy castle for the kids, and even some chickens! It’s the perfect place to spend a sunny afternoon. Highly recommend a visit!

As a place to get some thing to eat beautiful. As a place to stay not bad. My room was very tight. Then mattress in the bed wasn’t very comfy, I could feel the springs in my back. The very tight shower was amazing. The best pressure I have had in a hero in a long time. Food was very good. WiFi wasn’t great but staff was very accommodating of this when I explained I needed internet for work while I sat in the bar. Overall very nice venue very friendly staff nothing seemed to much trouble. Glad my stay is only one night though because I could hear cockerels from very early in the morning and I had a very long drive ahead of me the next day.
