The White Swan in Pendle

A first class experience from beginning to end. Relaxed ambience, expert advice by the servers, exquisite food and great value. We had the tasting menu, with the wine flight and was one of the best meals/food experiences I've ever had - loved it so much I've been back since. Cannot recommend highly enough.

The White Swan describes itself as a pub but don’t be fooled by that. In reality, this is now a restaurant in what was once the village pub. Everyone here is eating the delicious food – no-one is popping in for a swift half and a game of darts. We were last here in 2019, not long after it was awarded a Michelin star. Then the food was by way of a short traditional three course menu. Now, it’s a set no change affair. It’s fair to say we’d always prefer a traditional menu but this is about the right length for a set menu – long enough to give you an interesting meal; not so long that it becomes a chore to eat. And flavours are bang on - everything on the plate makes sense. But, as ever with a fixed menu, you have to hope that dishes are to your liking. Unfortunately, my partner found three dishes with ingredients that she really didn’t want to eat or not eat beyond a mouthful to confirm her dislike. Still, that did mean I did well for “seconds”. First up is a single bite “croustade” filled with a rich chicken liver mousse. Then a bread course – a mini-loaf to share – with butter and goat curd with basil oil for slathering over. The next offering may have been our favourite. A tomato consommé that was, in itself, the essence of tomato. It surrounded three cooked cherry tomatoes that had a slight “sweet and sour” infused into them. Delicious Dexter is, perhaps, my favourite beef. There used to be a guy at my local farmers market who sold his own farm’s meat and it was always really tasty. Here, it’s served as a tartare, spiked with a heavy hit from horseradish. The final savoury course featured Bambi, in the form of fillet of fallow deer, cooked to medium rare. Alongside, there’s a ball of long cooked meat, mushroom, mushroom puree and a Jerusalem artichoke puree. But the damson sauce is, perhaps, the star on the plate. But it all works so well. There’s pear as the first of two desserts. Honey sweetens it, whilst verjus gives it a contrasting sour edge. If the opening tomato consommé wasn’t our favourite dish, then the second dessert was. There’s a thin base of sponge soaked in Pedro Ximenez sherry, topped with flavoured cream . At first bite, it seems too boozy but the other flavours, miso and orange, kick in to mellow it down into a not too sweet but lovely ending to any meal. There’s good espresso to finish along with a dark chocolate and caramel petit four.

This is a great restaurant that serves Timothy Taylor beer. It should not be considered a pub. It provides a set menu which changes very, very regularly, using great seasonal ingredients. We have been many times and can catagorically confirm that each dish is well presented and, uniquely in my long experience, allow each element of a dish to be tasted. This is no mean feat given the complexity of the dishes. We recently were served aged beef tartare that was sublime and I say that as someone who did not think that they liked tartare! The service is second to none. Unpretentious, friendly and professional - outstanding. The wine list is not exhaustive but various and reasonably priced (better than many overpriced restaurants). I would recommend the wine flight as Gareth never ceases to amaze me with his inspired selections, often resulting me having to find the same or similar wine for my own "cellar". In all, as you can tell, we great fans of the The White Swan.

Fabulous lunch out. We live not to far away so try to get here once or twice a year and it never disappoints. The food is always amazing; so imaginative and you never eat the same thing twice. The staff are all great; informal but knowledgeable and it is great value. This is honestly the best restaurant I’ve ever been to anywhere in the world!

First impressions of the White Swan were good. There is a large car park and the property is well maintained and very clean. We received a friendly welcome and our seats were comfortable. The food was superlative.The set lunch consisted of 7 courses plus a homemade chocolate to finish. Each course was presented on lovely earthenware crockery which complemented the food. The cutlery was also very stylish. Each course looked so attractive and they were absolutely delicious. See menu attached. The stand out dish was the hot chocolate soufflé with ice cream and chocolate sauce. This was one of the best meals of my life! My husband enjoyed a glass of bitter then one of white wine and one of red that were recommended to complement our meal. At the side of the bar were large glass containers of fruit spirits. There was a plum gin, a rhubarb one and damson gin, and a few others including one that contained burnt orange. I assume these drinks could be dispensed and probably will be popular on their upcoming game (meat and fowl) evening

Very nice experience, lovely pub setting, great food, wine flight and service. No complaints at all would go back in a second.

This was a wonderful treat organised by my son and daughter in law. Delicious lunch served by knowledgeable and cheerful staff. Beautiful surroundings. Wine pairing was perfect. Outstanding meal and would highly recommend.

We visited for lunch for my partner’s birthday and we’ve never been before but we’ll definitely return. From start to finish, it was just perfect. We got a lovely warm welcome upon arrival and were seated at a comfortable table for two with water offered followed by initial drinks. Every single course was cooked to perfection and tasted delicious - even the beetroot course. Despite me hating beetroot, I polished it off and enjoyed it thoroughly. My favourite was the grouse wellington - I’ve never had grouse before and it was a lovely introduction to it. There was even a handmade perfect little salted caramel chocolate offered to finish off. Failed to take into consideration pre-stated dietary requirements and just fudged it on the day. Inattentive staff. No ambience. Dated decor. Food was nice enough except a very tart beetroot sorbet. Well-cooked fish. Overall, punching above its weight. No return custom from me.

We've been to many Michelin starred restaurants and can quite safely say the food we had deserved the Michelin star rating. The dishes had interesting flavour combinations, were skillfully cooked and delightfully presented. Couldn't find fault and the £65 mid week tasting menu is a bargain. The two amuse bouche of tomato gazpacho with basil foam and the Comte cheese mousse filled pastry case, which just melted in the mouth, were stunning. The salmon was amazingly soft and cooked to perfection. The dill sauce could easily be overpowered by the wasabi but was expertly balanced. The herb fed chicken dish was delicious, one of the best chicken dishes we've tasted.Beautifully tender from the use of a water bath ( which explains why a previous reviewer thought theirs was underdone) and then caramelised by blowtorch. The slightly warm sweetcorn pana cotta with ice cold popcorn sorbet and caramel shards flecked with salt shouldn't work but was thought provoking and delicious.. The last dish was just as good as the rest, the beetroot sorbet was powerful with beetroot flavour but worked perfectly with the black current and hibiscus. We finished with the obligatory but always fabulous Court Yard Dairy cheeses, accompanied by delicious handmade crackers. (I do feel sorry for any other cheese retailer, Andy really has the posh cheese market sawn up, rightly so though, he is the big cheese in cheese 😊). The service was good and the staff were delightful, knowledgeable and efficient. As Arnie says, we'll be back 😊

What a wonderful surprise last night to visit this lovely pub/restaurant. It is brilliantly clean, a lovely gentle decor and has a calm welcoming atmosphere but also a bit of a vibe and buzz going on in the background. Lovely interesting ceramics upon which the food was served, and fantastic staff who were all friendly, informative and helpful from start to finish. The utterly delicious food was absolutely outstanding both in terms of flavour, colour and presentation - really wonderfully special and the whole place is worthy of the compliments and awards it receives. The only point I might mention is that there wasn’t an option to purchase additional food as it was a set menu/tasting menu. I asked for some extra bread halfway through the meal, and they weren’t able to provide that. I think it lacked a carbohydrate course of some sort and I was still hungry when we left - which, for the price, which isn’t small, shouldn’t be the case. I don’t mind paying a premium for high end food which it was without question, but I do feel I should be reasonably full at the end of it. We had a completely lovely evening though with exciting dishes, beautifully and professionally prepared, presented and served and a sandwich when we got home!

Excellent lunch today. The chef maximizes flavours in an imaginative but harmonious way. We often eat at Michelin restaurants and this is one of our favorites. Unpretentious, friendly and wow, the cooking is 2* in our opinion. This place lets the food do the talking in the best possible way. Thanks to all at the White Swan who make our regular journey so worthwhile.

Went with friends for the first time and we all loved the food the tasting menu was varied and the food was very tasty really good value for what we had would definitely recommend Slightly confusing when we arrived as the service of food started almost immediately without us being asked if we would like wine pairings and we didn’t have a menu at first but it didn’t spoil our experience we found a very paid back experience compared to some other Michelin starred restaurants

Just fantastic. Even though I often feel like I will leave places a review I sometimes never get round to it, however feel compelled to just say a few words about our visit last night. Everything about our evening was absolutely perfect, the staff were faultless and welcoming, and the food was just truly magnificent. Every course of the 6/7 we had was 10/10. First visit to The White Swan, won’t be our last.

My wife & I love great food but have shied away from Michelin star because (in our opinion) it’s no better than a nice gastro pub meal. However tonight I have just experienced something that is truly worthy of ever accolade that a business should ever receive. We used to come here years ago before we moved & always loved the food but now it’s in another world of pure brilliance. This pub serves some of the best food I have ever eaten. It’s modern, inventive, beautiful and delicious! The staff are friendly and knowledgeable and we are always made to feel incredibly welcome.

An outstanding restaurant , what makes it so pleasant is that it is actually a pub and still feels like a pub. No pretentiousness at all , just a lovely sociable atmosphere. We had the set menu and every one was a treat. Three desserts was a bit of an odd one for me but two of them would make my last ever meal selection. Hard to judge favourites but the beef tartare and the venison were stunning. Great staff at every point. Sommelier a star- happy to explain but not to preach or lecture. The wine flight was another treat.Lovely to meet the owner too. The whole place is a treat. The skill in the kitchen is reflected in the food but the skill of everyone involved is evident in the great night they provided. Thank you. We hope to return. Good luck.

Wow what can I say about this place, our second visit and it blew us away again. Fantastic food, great value for money, staff are friendly and make you feel at ease, casual Michelin star quality dining in a friendly pub setting, our meal was superb and we’ll be back xx

I absolutely love this place. The food is outstanding, the ambience relaxed and the service is fabulous. We were a party of eight who enjoyed lunch on a Friday late in December. We travel 50 miles to get to the White Swan and it is very worth it. Well worth the journey though. I am trying to get as many folks as I can here and lucky enough to be back next week with some other friends for lunch again. How lucky I am.

Had fancied going to the WS for a while and finally found an excuse to be down from Edinburgh to pay it a visit and wasn't disappointed. There's one menus with 3 starters, 2 mains and 2 sweets and you go through the lot for £65 per head. Highlights on on our visit: tomato broth, beetroot ice-cream, halibut with lush hollandaise, squab pigeon and a fab champagne/yuyzu/pink grapefruit sorbet. As it's a Timothy Taylor pub you can enjoy the delights of Boltmaker and Landlord to your heart's content. Only small niggle was the lack of half bottles or carafes of wine and a limited selection by the glass - I'd expand the list. But this is just quibbling. Service was excellent from the friendly team. There is a decent hotel and a pub to stay within 1 mile or so. It's well worth a visit but make sure you book as it's small enough to be full on most enough. There's no question it's more than good enough.

We had an absolutely fabulous meal, we couldn’t fault any aspect of our dining experience . The White Swan deserves its Michelin star and all the other awards it has received . Every course was beautifully presented and tasted amazing. We will definitely return . Ps the service was also excellent .

We had been before and found the lighting too bright and decor rather like being in someone’s front parlour, it was the same this time. But what was worse, we were very cold throughout our visit! We were first situated by the door, and sat with our coats on, I asked if we could move and luckily after our first course we were relocated, and I had a radiator at my back. Should have been perfect, but no, we were still shivering. This is an old building, high ceilings and open plan and every time the door opened there was a drop in temperature, which would be sorted by placing a small fan heater above the door. The food was fabulous, the staff terrific, but being cold throughout our stay means we will not go again in the colder seasons. This is an expensive place to eat, we expect to be kept warm.

If you haven't been to the White Swan (in Fence, Lancs) it is well worth the trip. Significantly better than anything in city center Manchester, the 65 pound, 6 course tasting menu was outstanding. Great balance across all the dishes. Friendly and efficient service, they went out of their way to make sure I could get on a meeting I had to take in a quiet setting. We will definitely be back next time we're back in England.

Given a voucher for the taster menu by family. Six courses plus a couple of extras. Absolutely stunning food, perfect presentation and brilliant service. Menu included three things that I don’t like but the way they were incorporated into the dishes meant that I really didn’t notice them at all. We will definitely be returning. This chef has some real talent!

We loved our return visit as much as we did 8 years ago. It was just by chance in 2015 when we booked the White Swan that we discovered their taster menu. It was the first of many and started us in our Michelin journey. Of course Tom didn't have his star at that time but we were delighted when he did and it's certainly a worthy contestant. The flavours still surpass one or two others (that we won't mention) and we just loved every course. Thank you again. We will try and get to you before another 8 years is up, maybe when you get your 2nd star 😉. Well done - great night.

After great feedback from my daughters about a fantastic restaurant in a small village called Fence, near Burnley, we decided that we needed to go and try out this highly rated restaurant, The White Swan. On entry, we were warmly welcomed and shown to our table, what followed was a two hour extravaganza of fabulous food, great service and wonderful attention to detail. I have attached the menu below for you to ponder, what I can say is that we were blown away by the sheer brilliance of the food, so much so that we didn't once get to take a photo of any course as it came to the table. We just could not wait to eat them, it was only after the first one or two mouthfuls that one of us would remember that we should be photographing it. We honestly could not chose a "best course", every single one was beautiful, fantastic to eat and seasoned perfectly. At £65 for the lunch tasting menu, it is an absolute bargain.
