Treated my 14 year old grandson to lunch. He had a burger, I had calves liver, and we both had a dessert (which I only had to keep him company as I was quite full). We both thoroughly enjoyed our meals, but I would like to say that my main course, the calves liver with crispy bacon, bubble and squeak with a red wine jus, was probably one of the best pub meals I've ever had. The bill came to under £60, which considering we had 4 plates of food and drinks, I consider very fair. Can't believe this was my first visit, it certainly won't be the last.

I booked in for a Sunday roast. We had never been here but thought we would take a chance. The pub was very busy but the staff made the extra effort to make us feel welcome. The food was very very good and generous size portions, ( my wife nearly did not have a pudding). It is 30 mins drive from our home but we will definitely be returning for an evening meal as we were both so impressed.

We just finished our third stay at the White Lion and each year has been a wonderful experience. The location and setting are picture perfect, the rooms are in very top shape and clean, the food is always well prepared and reasonablly priced but most important is Wendy and the staff who make the stay so very comfortable with personal attention! We are already looking forward to our stay here again next year as we walk the South Downs Way! Richard

Roast beef dinner was lovely and plentiful. After we sat in the beer garden and were made to feel very welcome by all the locals. Doggie friendly too

My parents took me to the White Lion along with my great aunt. Mum found the White Lion via a Google search and double check on trip advisor. The family were certainly not disappointed! Lovely friendly staff, couldn’t do enough for one. Great aunt was reminiscing about the local area, where she used to work many years ago! A bit overwhelmed by the food selection, with so many favourites! All went for fish and chips. Never seen such a large portion of bartered cod appear on a plate. None managed to finish, albeit great aunt did then manage to squeeze in a fantastic looking eaton mess cheesecake, which seemed to go down very well! Fortunately, as parents and great aunt, I had my very own fish supper in the evening! Thoroughly recommended

Wonderful 1 night stay prior to a cruise. Easy 1/2 hour drive from Southampton cruise port. Soberton is a very pretty village, and pub is in a nice quiet ( and safe area). The pub itself is very quaint and has lovely outdoor seating areas. Room was very clean and the bed was extremely comfortable. Had dinner and breakfast. Both meals were delicious and dinner menu was varied and very reasonably priced, as were the drinks. Special thankyou to Wendy and Richard for looking after us well. We will definitely book again

We went for a Father’s Day lunch (two adults, one 5YO and one 1Wk old). They took us to our table but offered us a better table where the pram was a bit more out of the way, which was kind and observant. Only slightly weird thing was the thoughtful waitress was told off for moving us, which is odd, as switching tables is no big deal. We waited for 5 minutes and then I went to the bar to ask if we were supposed to order at the bar or table; it was table service and I would say that because the staff were not stood in the same area as we were sat, they could not see that we were clearly ready to order. We ordered a seafood curry, a beef roast and chicken nuggets from the kids menu, I asked for my curry to be spicy, which was fine. The food was served quickly and was delicious! We have had roasts from a number of pubs in this area, and this was by far the tastiest. My curry was also excellent, and my son ate all of his too (and he can be a bit picky). We were sat for another five minutes before our plates were cleared, maybe a little too long. We ordered ice creams and a lemon posset for dessert; once again food quality was top notch. In summary; the food was excellent, the staff were overall very friendly, with the only area of improvement (in my opinion) would be a waiting station in that room to allow the staff to observe as tables are finished eating, ready to order, etc.

I must give a shout out to the White Lion as this was one of the most satisfying meals I have had in a long time. We were staying locally for a few days away and ordered an Uber to take us there as it looked like limited parking. I had a wonderful pint of Goddens Gold a new beer for me. We both ordered the Hake new potatoes and Wild Garlic Sauce. It was great, cooked to perfection and the sauce was fantastic. I had the New Zealand Te Onepoto and a great sauvignon blanc it was. We both had Creme Brule with a Rhubarb compote in the base again something completely new to me as I usually like "traditional" Creme Brule, fantastic I will try it at home. A few more drinks and I tried to order an Uber to take us back, but after 20 minutes they cancelled the ride. I asked the landlord if there was a local taxis service he asked where we were going and told us not to worry he would get one of the staff to take us. What more could you ask for great food, drinks, service and hospitality. Thank you very much.

Good variety on the menus although they couple do more for vegetarians. Nice dining rooms and beer garden, as well as a covered terrace for days that don’t quite suit open air drinking or dining. We had light lunches on a sunny Saturday in the garden, a nice stopping place on a dog walk. Beautiful country side all around. Prices are reasonable and service is good. The White Lion has had its ups and downs in the last 25 years but seems to be more consistently on an up. Dog friendly.

I’ve been twice in the last three weeks, with different family members, for lunch and for dinner. On both occasions, the food was superb and the service friendly and helpful. A good beer and wine selection . A traditional English pub, in a lovely village location. My vegetarian daughter had fancied the aubergine parmigiana, but it wasn’t on the menu. No problem, the chef managed to produce it anyway. We enjoyed our starters and mains. Tip: parking is limited, so arrive early and be ready to manoeuvre. Don’t bring a Winnebago or a Humvee.

T so his was our fifth or so visit (it's many, many miles from home). Everthing I said before applies this time around so I won't repeat myself. But I will say that the standard is consistently good, the portion sizes excellent, the quality first-rate and there is no question of an added service charge (discretionary or otherwise). Additionally the menu changes, although I can't say how often. All in all a very decent little place indeed. We'd go more often were it closer.

Booked a table for 5pm on New Year’s Eve thinking we could have a couple of drinks first then order some food afterwards. When we arrived and ordered a drink they told us kitchen closed at 5pm and we should order food NOW. We did that but this should have been communicated at the time of booking not once we got to the restaurant and sat down. This spoilt the evening slightly as we were forced to eat a lot earlier than we wanted to. Having said that the food was excellent all served hot, and in big portions (and very rapidly!🤣). 1 point deduction for taking a booking for same time as kitchen closed.

Visited The White Lion with my wife to sample their Christmas menu. The resturant area was warm & cosy. We were shown to our table in a room at the back of the pub which we quickly named 'the fridge ' After a wait of almost 15 minutes for drinks & a complaint, they arrived. Our food order was eventually served & I imformed the waitress that I would pay the bill immediatley, eat our food then go home because we were so cold. She said sorry & said we should have said something earlier so they could move us, which begs me to say Why if we could have been moved why were we put there in the first place ? What made it worse was the radiators in the ' fridge ' were almost cold. The food however was very good, just a shame the evening was spoilt by poor service & 'the fridge ' Would I return ? Maybe.

Unfortunately this was highly recommended and one of our family members uses this pub as their local so we were expecting a decent service. we were booked for 9 people at 2pm but the previous people were still drinking at the table. we were then told is 2.15 ok so we said not a problem. what should have happened was that group of people as only drinking asked to vacate and move to the bar area. we eventually got to sit down at 3pm and the landlady actually didn't seem to care whether we were seated or not. we offered to sit in an annex if it was easier but they couldn't even set that up putting chairs where there was no where to put your plate so not sure how we could have eaten there anyway. The food was only mediocre anyway as the roast potatoes weren't brown or crispy and the yorkshire puddings were hard.

Eaten twice recently at the White Lion (under the EOHO deal of course!) First was a week ago in glorious sunshine so we swapped our inside booking for a table on the green. The staff really earned their keep that day as it was very busy. A little wait for the food but everything was delicious. (medallions, fish board, ploughman's). One way system for ordering (or online) and sanitisers available.Today we ate inside in the bar "library" area as it was pouring down. Tables inside were well spaced and it was simple to maintain social distance. Again the meals were excellent (medallions and pie). A slight disappointment that the hot weather last week meant that some of our favourite ice cream flavours were no longer available. Staff were friendly and efficient as usual.

We came here for Sunday Lunch - the restaurant was busy, and we were actually given our table a little early as we had arrived in the bar an hour before. The food was nice, 8/10 - but what spoilt it was the service, pretty poor. No asking how our food was, no asking if we needed more drinks, no asking if we wanted desserts, we had to keep trying to get the attention of the bar staff - I'm sure there is a lot of lost revenue in not offering more drinks / desserts to people, most people got up and paid the bill as no waitress was to be seen!

I visited this pub in the summer with friends on a walk from Droxford, on a sunny bank holiday weekend. It was great then, but even better this week. Visiting with girlfriends, we had a splendid lunch. The service was genuinely warm and friendly. The atmosphere perfect. The menu covered all bases from traditional Christmas roast to pub favourites, original twists on an onion bhaji, ( using Turkey!) all cooked to perfection. I'd been informed when booking the table how long we could expect to sit at the table, a good idea, when running a popular establishment, no one wants to be waiting for their table because previous customers were late arriving!

Great Sunday roast, portion size is fantastic, very tasty and friendly and efficient service. Can't really find anything to complain about. Really nice place to meet for lunch, will come back here again. They even accept American Express which is a huge bonus.

Met up with some pals for a latish lunch. Doombar was pretty good as was the welcome. We ate in the light and airy restaurant. Good, varied menu with plenty of choice. Fish and chips, homemade pie and the pork and Stilton dish were ordered and all were deemed tasty. My friends chips looked a tad soggy but he said they were ok. Wine was very reasonably priced . Overall a good lunch, will return.

Upon visiting this small town, I was hardly greeted with a variety of options of places to eat or drink. Thankfully, located 10 minutes up from the road from where I was staying, there was The White Lion.

We booked in for a Wednesday evening. My partner is in a wheelchair and the staff were very helpful letting us through the side doors and then letting us re-arrange the tables, so the 3 of us could sit comfortably.

Popped in for a quick lunch before going horse riding with 'South Downs Trekking', just up the road. Great little pub with a lovely beer garden. Food was quick to be served and tasty (we had mozzarella baguette), and staff polite and friendly. A wee bit pricey but all in all a good pub, perfect for a stop-over on a day out in the country.

My Wife & I together with Alison & John visited this restaurant for lunch yesterday, and were not disappointed from being shown to our table until we left the landlady could not do enough for us which was greatly appreciated.

We had lunch here with friends. There is plenty of choice on the menu. We had a home made pie, chicken Caesar, a prawn linguini and a crispy duck salad - all were excellent. To follow we had seasonal crumble and an ice cream. The staff were attentive. We ate inside, though there are tables outside. We will come again.

Cycling the Meon Trail we spotted a sign advertising The White Lion. Very friendly staff and enjoyable lunch. We could have enjoyed a Sunday Roast, but would not have made it back on the bike 😂

Great unspoilt pub with nice garden and decent beer. If you can find this place it's well worth the effort.

This is my friend's local and having eaten here once before (prior to reviewing on Tripadvisor) I said that this was where I would like to take him. I wasn't disappointed - indeed he and his wife come here regularly as it is the 'hub' of the village (always a good sign). Although it was midweek, it was pleasantly busy which bodes well. As a self-confessed 'foodie', the quality of food was as good as I would cook myself. I invariably judge an 'eaterie' on the basis of the way the vegetables are cooked and here I was not disappointed. The mashed potato was particularly delicious - full marks chef! The service was just right - carefully observed by charming staff who smiled (what a difference that makes!). In conclusion, I would happily drive the 32 miles from my home just to have a meal here. 'Thank you' to everyone at the White Lion.

Our new go-to pub for Sunday lunch. The portions are generous without being OTT on price. Lovely burgers. Service is efficient and friendly, tho it does get very busy at times. Parking can be a bit tricky too.

Had an evening meal here as part of a party of 10. This was my first visit and I was quite impressed, an old building, long established pub but refurbished and tastefully updated. It was quite busy being a Friday night. We had our table in the function room attached to the main building.

A lucky chance find, and so glad we did. We arrived on a Sunday evening without a reservation, but the young staff were very welcoming and found us a table. Good ales and superb food. Service was great throughout our visit.

Recommended to visit, arrived at a busy time when the small public bar was full. However the small restaurant area in an adjacent room the other side of the bar was clear and we had arrived for food anyway. Nice selection of beers. A real highlight was the excellent service provided by the front of house team. Really polite, attentive and from a menu perspective knowledgeable.

Came across this little gem whilst out walking in the area. Popped in to see if we could have lunch, ( there were 7 of us). The staff could not have been more obliging, moving tables around to seat us all. There was an excellent menu, and the food arrived piping hot and plentiful. We were very impressed. For the men, there was a good variety of beers, and superb choice of wines. Our table was the last to finish, although the pub was still open for drinks after lunch. At no time did we feel we were harried to finish and leave.

To celebrate my birthday I organised a meal for friends and family at the White Lion. I had eaten there previously over christmas so I knew the food was good and tasty. The management were really helpful in readily accomodating a table of 15 on a Saturday night and confirmed the booking by email. Whilst asking us to consider pre-booking food orders, did not insist on it, so all our food was actually ordered on the night without fuss. The food orders were varied, but they all arrived brilliantly presented on hot plates. We were sat in the lower (back room) area of the restaurant allowing us some privacy.

It’s was a lovely treat yesterday to meet my friend for lunch. It was lovely to sit in the restaurant near the fire which was kept well lit. It was really cold so a welcomed treat. We had lovely sandwiches and a wrap. The were well presented and tasted equally delicious. I will look forward to returning there soon.

Would love to be able to recommend The Cricketers but it was possibly the worst |Sunday Lunch we've ever had. Food was poor , service mediocre and cost extortionate. They even put a 12.5% sevice charge on the already expensive bill. To top it all one of our family who ate the pork had a very upset stomach .

Pleasant relaxed atmosphere, excellent food, prices reasonable, service perhaps a little slow. Gave us more time to talk. Give it a go.

We stayed with another couple for 2 nights B&B plus one dinner. The hotel couldn't be better placed in Winchester but both the car park and the dining room are far too small for the number of guests. One of us had to wait for about 40 mins for a car park space (for which they charge £15 per night) and we had to wait for over 30 mins each morning for a table at breakfast. The hotel was busy but they should operate booked timings for breakfast rather than making guests wait for tables when they cannot accommodate the numbers. The food was very good but at dinner two of us were served our main courses about 10 mins before the others. I paid for the wine separately but when the bill was presented a service charge had been added which I asked to be deleted which it was.
