Called in last minute and were kindly given a table by the lovely staff! Had a superb meal accompanied by great wine and some lovely conversation with other locals dining there, it was a brilliant evening! Special thanks to the lovely gentleman who took my friend Margaret's birthday gift for me and kept it safe until the following day when she was booked in for a lunch with friends. The present was delivered safely and Margaret had a superb time. The landlady and staff here are all great, we love coming here, a huge thank you to everyone who always takes such good care of us (and our friends) on each and every visit! x

Absolutely top draw experience today. Beautiful plaice dish for me and the reliable Barnsley chops for my partner. We made it to pudding and managed to share the best ever pecan. Great service, great food. Much better now it’s table service but I did sort of miss the former chaos of the queue at the kitchen door :-) Well done team and thank you!

Extremely rude landlady. Lasagne was dreadful, a congealed dollop. No layers of pasta, definitely no cream, just a hard crust on top of basic mincemeat and tasteless. Do not visit if you are expecting quality food or decent human interaction as it will not be found here!

Lovely location with stunning views. The staff are friendly and the food is very tasty. Would have been 5 stars if the car park didn't resemble Normandy beach in 1944. I am not sure if that part of the land belongs to the pub, but if it does, it needs levelling off

Having eaten in The White House numerous times previously I decided for the 4th time to make a last minute booking to avail of the "EOHO scheme". On the off chance I e-mailed a request for a booking for the same day (last Wed 19th) and got a timely reply from a Mr Marney confirming my table for 2 at 5.30pm.My partner and I arrived just before 5.30pm and joined a small queue waiting to be seated. I was impressed by the large blackboard in the entrance hall being used to highlight the Covid-19 rules and restrictions in such an artistic and clear manner (much better than all these cheap posters floating around). When we got inside, I was greeted by a lady who asked for my name. When she couldn't find it on the list she asked me if i had booked and i said yes. She replied "in that case you can take that table down by the mirror". We made our way down to that table but i felt that the lady was upset because she thought I had made it up about the booking. After settling in our seats for about 5 minutes i got up to go to the bar. I ordered a pint of cask bitter and a half of lager and was then told by the same lady to sit down and my drink order would be taken at the table. This again seemed a bit harsh and abrupt as the rules outside in the hall clearly stated "You may order drinks at the bar".Anyway enough of the negatives. As soon as i sat back down again, the gentleman from behind the bar brought me the drinks I had ordered. A minute later we had our order taken. The starters arrived after about 10 minutes. I had the Chicken Liver Pate and my partner had the garlic mushrooms. The pate was probably the best pate I have ever had. So smooth and tasty it was unbelievable. My partner also enjoyed her garlic mushrooms. For mains, my partner had the Haddock with Cheese topping and I had the Gammon Steak. Both mains were ample portions but tasted fantastic. The gammon was cooked to perfections and served with both pineapple and egg. The haddock was well cooked and served with a lovely medley of fresh well cooked vegetables. All in all the good was excellent. I have availed quite a bit of the EOHO scheme and this was the best meal I have had. The service from the waiters and waitresses was excellent. Will return soon and hopefully get a better welcome......

Went for lunch as we haven't been for a couple of years. Wasn't disappointed with the food at all. Generous portions left us full to the brim. 2 starters, 2 mains and drinks just over £20 with the current discount. We didn't book, but I recommend you do if going for dinner. We Won't leave it so long before we return next time.

I could bore you to death of stories where, because of M62 traffic I was forced into taking the A58 from Leeds yo Manchester or vice versa. And the number of times I have driven past the White House without stopping is, to say the least, rather embarrassing. However, for our second trip out following Covid lockdown, our fiends deemed the White House a great place for Saturday lunch, never themselves having been disappointed in over 10 years of going there. So off we trotted. For the first time in a very long time - and it wasn't just relief from lock-down speaking - we can justifiably say we will be back to the White House. Menu, bursting with home-made goodies, a good selection of draught beers and other on-tap refreshments, superb choice of Gins and for those interested in the vine, a seemingly good wine cellar.A good selection of starters were available - we took the advice of sharing two starter between four of us. Our mains were a Thai Green prawn curry, cheese topped chili, traditional roast beef lunch and a poached salmon. Not a complaint between the four of us. Deserts were just two - sticky toffee pudding for one couple and bread and butter pudding (the best I have tasted in decades!) for us. Both accompanied by wonderful, creamy custard.I'm really not too sure where the negative comments have come from. We could find nothing negative to comment about, and all of we customers in for lunch t the time (including a fabulous gentleman in his 101st year) enjoyed the food, atmosphere, cleanliness and service. Our host made us feel like we'd known him for years.Mind you, I am somewhat suspicious of reviews from people who crowbar the adjective "super" as a adverb in front of everything they say as they attempt to emulate the late Lancashire host of a very popular darts quiz show!"Look what you cold have won."

Great lunch at the White House today. All covid guidelines were observed so felt very safe.I had the lamb Henry and my husband had the tandoori chicken curry from the specials menu. Both were lovely. The staff were excellent, especially Helen behind the bar.Together with a glass of wine and a beer the bill came to £23 as the pub is participating in the 50% off scheme. However we would happily have paid the full price and will definitely return .

We've driven past this pub several times in the past yet never dropped so I was always very curious what it was like inside. This pub is frequented by walkers. We visited this pub on a cold and rainy August day and from the door we were warmly greeted by one of the barmaids. We were asked which room we wanted to sit in then promptly given a menu. The lady who showed us to our table apologied in advance for the fact that the pub was rather cold as no one had expected the weather to change so drastically from one day to the next; this didn't bother us though. The menu offered a good selection of dishes. We were served very quickly. The food was plentiful, the portions were very big and tasty. I will definitely be calling back in some day.Thank you everyone at the White House for making our lunch so enjoyable!

We have decided to go there and try as we have not been out for over 4 months so we were super excited. As we walked in, the atmosphere was a bit dull, very quite, no music. There was no pub vibe. We were seated and ordered drinks and food. We went for a beef and pork roast. The food arrived very fast which is not a good sign. The beef was super chewy and very tough, the potatoes which were meant to be roasted were deep fried !! Except for carrots, all the other veg were horrible. The stuffing was just like the one you get from a packet, same for the gravy. The only good thing was the pork crackling! We were very disappointed as it was our first meal out after a very long break. It is a shame that this place having such a great location, surrounded with beautiful views cannot deliver a good English Sunday roast dinner. The tables outside were very dirty covered in bird poo. It was not pleasant . We will not come back and we don’t recommend this place.

Me and a colleague were very excited to finally do the walk from todmorden to the infamous the white house pub. When we finally got there I ordered two pints and took them outside where we were sat on a bench with our dog, as we thought we would check if they allowed dogs, which they didn't.When I got to the bench my colleague accidentally nocked my pint over and went to get a new one. The tall blonde woman wearing no socks who served me came out and proceeded to tell me it was the wobbly bench and I was stupid to still be sitting on it if a drink had already fallen and told me to sit on another one, abit shocked I complied and sat on the bench when she proceeded to rip up the bench and flipped it over. She then repeated imply it was my fault for sitting on the bench, I then told her it was a common accident it wasn't anyone's fault, how was we to know about the bench.Very rude.

Very surprised that there was no need to book for valentine's day. My parents had offered to have the children at the last minute so thought we would struggle. Chap on phone said no problem just come up there should be no problem getting a table for 2. Upon arrival we were served at the bar straight away. They were no tables left in the bar area but plenty in the restaurant area. Hubby decided to try the haggis to start which he really enjoyed. I had the halloumi cheese which was gorgeous. For mains he chose the venison again which he had never tried before. He loved it and was expecting it to be really "gamey" but it was perfect. I had the gammon chips and salad. The gammon seemed a bit tough in areas and the chips a little overcooked. Staff here were brilliant. Very friendly and welcoming. Plates were cleared quickly and service was quick too.We will return.

We've been coming here for over 15 years and never left a review so thought it was time we did!Arrived at opening time on a Friday Evening. Served by a friendly, polite barmaid and took seats in the conservatory. Ordered our good, it was on our tables promptly. All food was lovely, good quality and generous portions. Service was friendly and efficient. Prices are very reasonable, we think mains have gone up in price by as little as £3 in the 15 years of us being customers - remarkable when you consider how the cost to the business of staff wages, utilities and all other overheads have gone up in that time. As we were leaving the bar was full and most tables were taken, a sure sign of a good pub and eaterie!

The special dietary requests were delicious and all the staff were happy to serve us. I felt the success of the function was largely due to the warm hospitality of The White House and seamless coordination of the service. We eat at the White House at least once a month and are usually more than impressed with the standard of food and service provided however today was a real disappointment on all fronts. My husband ordered a special halibut meal with chips and vegetables £14.85 as expected because halibut is expensive this was a small portion of fish however the chips were oven chips and also sparse comapared to the amount served on previous visits. Similarly the veg consisted of one carrot stick three small pieces of cabbage and two green beans. My husband never complains but felt this was completely unacceptable the chef in the kitchen said portions were as normal - must be a new chef because this was not the case. The proprietor phoned us and stated she had seen the portions and felt they were as normal however, she also stated she was at the cash and carry when we were having our meal so couldn't have seen ours. As stated by a previous customer what happend to the customer always being listened to. So sad to witness good customer service withdrawn no establishment is perfect but those that come near to such are usually the ones who are aware they can and do have bad days.

What's happened at the Whitehouse? Is it a new chef or it's just gone off. Lamb Henry was okay but chips were just average. Vegetables which normally are nicely cooked were completely overdone, almost soggy. The "special" plaice in with lemon and parsley was satin a bath of melted butter, and the fish looked as if it had been cooked at lunchtime and just heated up. Accompanying new potatoes were anything but new. A most disappointing experience.

We were booked in as a party of 13 for my Dads 70th birthday at 13:15. We arrived at 13:00 and sat down for 13:15. We wrote our order down to save time for the waitress staff who were very friendly. The guy behind the bar was rude and made numerous smutty suggestive comments to my mum while she was buying drinks at the bar. My sister was at the bar and overheard him say to a waitress "have they gone yet" (referring to us on the 'middle table') to which she said "no they've just ordered their main". After we waited a while for our meal of very average food we decided to skip dessert and go for coffees to finish off, again writing down our order, to be told the kitchen was closed and the coffee machine was turned off behind the bar. Very disappointing and we were made to feel like we had to cut our meal short and leave. If the pub didn't have time to serve our meals and give us time to eat they should have suggested we came earlier.

Being local we have visited The White House on numerous occasions over the past months with no complaints about the food or service ,however last night the wheels fell off. We were taken there as a birthday treat for my wife but for 3 of us the food was rubbish 2 of us ordered Barnsley chop and asked for it to be cooked through, it was cooked through alright well and truly over cooked, When the food arrived instead of of a decent sized chop there were 2 pathetic thin cops hardly a centimetre thick , dry and tough , the steak knife was no match for them I gave up on the second chop and left it. As for the third meal, my Grand Daughter had a sirloin steak and this was the same, overdone. The frozen chips however were lovely freshly cooked and crispy, best item on the plate. But £13.50 for a plate of chips????

Came here with my partner last night as we were in work clothes and wanted somewhere casual for some nice pub grub. We went in, unsure whether we ordered at the bar, sat ourselves down or we were seated. After being blanked for quite a while we ordered a drink and asked. Decor dated and dark. We sat down and ordered quickly. Waited 15 minutes for our starter. I ordered halloumi, my parter cheesy garlic bread. Garlic bread was cheap white muffin! Cut into chunks with gallons of cheese on top! Bottom burnt to a crisp. When we eventually got our mains we were interrupted by another customer complaining about something in his food. Blonde lady came over with awful customer service and passed the buck to another server to deal with. Our meals were served with god awful 70’s style salad which was like warm, obviously sat under a heat lamp. Meat was tatty and chips were average. Staff miserable, decor and food stuck in the 70’s. Picture shows what I left as I could stomach it!

Stopped in for lunch on way home with my disabled dad. It was easy to access for him and there was plenty of room at the table. We arrived just before midday, and glad we did as the pub filled up very quickly. There was plenty of variety on the menu, and a long list on the specials board. We both chose fish and chips, a smaller portion was available for my dad. The meal was quick to arrive and was well presented and of a good standard. It had a great atmosphere as there were plenty of walkers coming in to order lunch, and the staff were very friendly. Would go again.

We have just had another great meal at the white house pub heading over the tops to Halifax. The staff are very friendly great meals and always busy. May I say they never let you down on the meal portions and always come out full .

And what a lovely Alternative, I enjoyed my pint of real ale, my wife enjoyed her half of lager & lime, her meal & I enjoyed my meal. The people locally are very friendly. It was an alternative as we had been walking with the RBS Group Pensioners Association Walking Group which we did from the Hollingworh Lake Visitor Centre. Originally we were supposed to have dined at the Beach House, their loss was very much our gain.

So both meals that myself and my partner ordered turned up food falling off the plate and mostly burnt. We did get to listen to the two female bar staff having a good slagging off of the management. We weren't once asked how our meals were as the bar staff were too busy sitting on the customer side of the bar enjoying a pint themselves. I wouldn't recommend the food or the service. If the chef put as much effort into his cooking as he did messing on his phone maybe it wouldn't have been burnt or at least edible.

This really is excellent value for money and the food never fails to please. We are a group of 8 friends and regularly visit the White House, as well as when we are looking for somewhere to celebrate a family occasion.

The food could be better. The White House has been up and down over the years. It has a fantastic location, good for walking the pennine way and Blackstone Edge. Nice homely pub and friendly staff.

Three generations of our family had dinner here and the menu was very broad, with plenty of choice to suit those who preferred more traditional pub grub and also those wanting to try something more adventurous. You order in the kitchen rather than at the bar, which is a bit strange (and watch out for the step down), but service was fast and friendly. The prices were generally below £10 for a (large) main course, which was excellent value.

Wanted to take my parents out for a drive and something to eat and my friend recommended this place. I've driven by many times over the years but never popped in. We were given a warm welcome. There was a wide choice on the menu and lots of specials. Never had to go to the kitchen to order my food before - nice quirky feature! The food was good quality and reasonably priced. My husband particularly liked the Cumberland sausage.

Been this evening the food is ok, but nothing special, they serve large meals, which was ok, but the chips are dreadful, crispy bits which should be thrown away not served , if I was visiting again I definitely would not have chips! The food is served hot, and the staff are really nice and welcoming. After reading the reviews and recommendations I was slightly disappointed.

Haven't been for ages but can't think why because when you walk in you are greeted by cheery staff who are very welcoming. The atmosphere was great and it was an extremely relaxing and enjoyable experience. All the food served to us and other diners from the wide ranging menu was fabulous.

Have eaten here twice within the last week. Food was fantastic. Plates were clean when they left the table. The first time we had the steak deal. Two steaks for 28 qiud plus a bottle of wine. Bargain and the steaks were cooked to perfection. The second visit was as equally satisfying.

I used to live locally and spend plenty an afternoon here with my faithful companion. I visited my daughter last weekend and we went for a walk along the Pennine way with my dog. I suggested a quick pint in your pub only to be turned away unceremoniously. I was absolutely taken aback maybe you now only cater for people with hunters Wellington's or are Wellington's banned as well. Owd betts for me from now on.

Me and my partner have ordered from here several times, the latest being tonight and it is always perfect. I always order a cookie dough and I have never found another place that beats this one. The quality and size for the price is great. Will continue to order in the future :)

Sorry i can't give a food recommendation,as i have only been here for a car club meeting, but being a Lees brewery menu,it's sure to be ok. We have only recently started meeting here, great for us,nice big carpark, nice that we can all sit together, bar prices are ok. With the ligher nights, warmer weather, hopefully we can get to enjoy the outside area..
