Been here a couple of times–the first by chance, the second on purpose with a beer lover in tow. I knew he’d like it. It’s one of those proper ale pubs with a menu of interesting beers chalked up on a blackboard. And it seems to have won various awards. It’s a beautiful, small, traditional cottage pub with two cosy bar rooms and a hatch where you order your drinks. First time I visited, it was summer, and I sat outside in the pretty garden that climbs up a slope. They serve a lunch buffet of quality cold food, and I had a lovely piece of cheese-potato-and-chive pie with salad and slaw Everything I’ve drunk here was very well kept. I sampled a variety of what they offer, including dark beers and ciders. Not one dud. The staff were friendly, knowledgeable, and proud of what they do. Pubs like this are rare and to be treasured. If you like good ale or quaint country pubs, the White Horse should be right up your street.

Just the place for a relaxing lunch. Please don't expect Farrow & Ball paint or a chef that just wants to show off. This is a very old fashioned pub with beautifully kept beers and food that appeals to everyone. I think the prices are the best in the area.

Our walking group had lunch here, and most had the excellent value lunches rather than the usual sandwiches. We ate under cover in the garden (where there were lots of tables) as is our preference these days. Lasagne, Lamb macaroni and quiche were all good and excellent value. Tables could perhaps do with a renovation

Visited here recently on a Sunday for lunch after completing a circular walk around Hedgerley. Friendly welcome and shown to a table in the garden which was quite spacious. Service was good, good choice of guest ales and a reasonable choice of food for lunch. I chose the roast beef which whilst they serve a generous plateful I didn’t find the overall taste and quality to be that good. Our table and bench seat were on a slope and there was too big a gap between the table and bench, the bench wouldn’t move so that didn’t help the eating experience.

Hurrah for the White Horse! The only proper pub in the area. Real beer (changes often with a few trusty regulars), proper pub food, friendly locals, dog friendly - I wish it could be airlifted to within 400 yards of my house so I don’t have a 5k walk to get there and back - but it’s absolutely worth it! Please never sell and have someone turn you into another boring gastro pub! And also thanks for the takeaways during lockdown!

I have been using this pub for 20 years plus. The eight or so cask ales, which are sourced from all over the UK, change regularly and it is unusual for the same beer to figure twice in a year. The exception is the 'house' beer which is Rebellion IPA. All are immaculately kept and there is always a range of styles and strengths for which the prices are reasonable. The interior of the pub us quite small and there is at least one heated marquee attached to the pub which is fully heated and furnished. There is a large garden with plenty of tables for when the weather is good. Food is served at lunchtimes only and is traditional and home made. The staff are both helpful and knowledgeable. If you like your real ale and enjoy a traditional pub then you won't go far wrong here.

Listed as of special interest in the Camra guide to heritage pubs in the south east, its a lovely low ceilinged pub with a beautiful exterior and two main rooms inside one of which has an inglenook fire place. The larger lounge is less inviting but there’s also a lovely garden and al fresco seating in front. A wide range of very well kept beers are dispensed direct form the barrel and the staff are friendly and helpful. Full Covid measures are in place which is reassuring.

I first visited here in 20 years ago with a few mates on our motorcycles. Have popped back on the odd sunny day & found the punters to be polite & pleasant. The staff all friendly. Garden seating at rear for those who don't mind a climb. Very traditional old coaching flask. Beers a plenty to choose from. You need a good wad of cash to drink & eat here though as totally exorbitant. When I have a bit of lazy wonga in my pocket & the sun's out, I would possibly stop for a coldy outside but that's about all. Nice little landmark..

The landlord and staff keep the beers in tip-top condition, with a mix of dark and light, and on every visit there's something new to try.It can get very busy, particularly at weekends, so worth booking a table if you want a meal. There's a fridge by the bar where you can choose cold meats, sandwiches and salads and they do a few hot dishes as well. It's good basic pub food served at very reasonable prices.

Back in the late 1960s when I was a pub inspector for the Campaign for Real Ale, this utterly traditional village pub was on my route. Coming back decades after my last visit (pre children), almost nothing seemed to have changed apart from a small extension to the lounge bar. Best of all, the real ale barrels are still stored in an open area behind the bar where you can see your pint being drawn off. Big selection of beers and ciders at exceptional prices - a pint of Rebellion was only £3.75. I brought my walking group here and the staff coped magnificently with taking and serving 26 orders at the same time. The food is good, honest pub fayre, again at remarkably low prices. Loved my Pork Goulash with steamed Rice. We sat under the outside awning on a damp February day, but the heaters kept us nicely warm. What a great pub experience!

LISTEN TO ME - For those who love and appreciate the finest real ales and incredibly delicious craft beers then The White Horse in Hedgerley must be one of the best pubs in the country. Kevin must be one of the most genuinely passionate landlords in existence. Not only are the beers of an exceptional quality but the character of the pub is just extraordinarily attractive. Yes, every day is like a beer festival. But what you really MUST understand is the situation - this pub is in an idyllic little village road - it is picture perfect. Just paint your own image of the best pub you can imagine - old, quaint, characterful, oak beams, stone flag floored tiny "public bar" that you could miss but a main bar of fun and jollity, and a small fire. An outside extension under a tent like structure with those gas fired flaming things that make it nice and cosy. And THEN in the Summer - the small but beautifully formed hilled garden and the quadrophonic bird song - you could be a millionaire miles from London or any major town or city for that matter. Just truly magical. HOWEVER - you must realise that the passion of the owners is fully focused on the beer. The food is OK - certainly not sophisticated - certainly not memorable (apart from the curries) - but just so - simple, quirky, could be so much better (chips are particularly disappointing given that they are so thick and fat and often not cooked through) but does it really matter? The White Horse in the Ancient Village of Hedgerley is an Oasis. AN OASIS. This is special. Really special. You would have to travel very far into the depths of East London to find beers and ales of this quality. It's almost as if one makes a pilgrimage to Hedgerley to seek out the temple of fine ales. In fact, that is IT - this place is a TEMPLE of Fine Ales. It represents (way ahead of its time) a Mecca for those who really really appreciate superb ales brewed under the arches in East London by someone who looks like Catweazle. BUT - you just have to ask yourself one key question - given that The White Horse is situated in one of the most affluent areas outside of Central London and COULD offer amazing "artisanal" pies, tarts, meats, breads, cheeses and yes - really really good chips - what don't they? The answer is simply that they don't need to. The beers, the ales, the pork scratchings are enough. Also, you'd have to admit that if they did really work the full commercial potential of this pub and served great food, would the beer stay as good as it is? The risk, I suppose, is that it might turn into something like the Black Horse in Fumer village. The Black Horse has very good food but very unremarkable beer. It's too squeaky clean - too similar to a million other very good food pubs you might go to that also serve totally forgettable ales. So, in conclusion, IF you want to experience world class beer, served in a quaint old pub that transports you to another world where there is no pretence or pomp or familiarity to anything you have ever been to before then make that pilgrimage. If you're lucky, Kevin will be there and you can talk to him about his family pub, his passion for incredible beers, his love of serving world class ales to an appreciative (and very, very, lucky) local audience. Just remember that those chips won't be triple cooked in duck fat or beef dripping and the rest of the food (apart from the curries) will be totally unremarkable and therefore a bit disappointing but remind yourself that that is not why you are going there...you are going there for some of the very best beers you've ever had in a magical little viilage road with quadrophonic bird song in that quaint little garden and everything will be just fine - as a result, you will go there again, and again and again....and you will be very lucky that you've found it and realise that if there was any real fairness in the world there should be a very long queue to get in as it's just so very, very, very special. Can I have just one more conclusion? Please. All things considered, this place is UNDOUBTEDLY ONE OF THE VERY BEST and VERY RARE (increasingly rare) PUBS IN THE WHOLE COUNTRY. So go, and count yourself very fortunate - very fortunate indeed.

The beer selection is amazing. In fact, every day is like a beer festival. Where else can you find an apricot wheat beer on tap? However, they don't allow tasters, so making your choice is down to pot luck.Sadly, the food is disappointing and poor value. My ploughmans (£6.95) had just two meagre slices of cheese.Service is not their strong point either. Faced with a queue of around 15 people at the bar, the landlord decided to scuttle off and take a phone call, leaving a junior assistant to deal with customers on her own, which added to delays.

I've reviewed The White Horse before and described it as "The Best Pub In The World". Well that accolade needs constant justification. For perhaps the first time in 35 years I was served a beer that was definitely off, the Lassobacillus had gathered. I took it back to the bar, much to-ing and fro-ing and holding up of glasses. Somepubs will change a beer without comment (fair enough), some will say "No one else has complained" (Outrageous) In the White Horse it was dealt with in a kind of shock horror way "My God how did we allow such a thing to pass across our hallowed counter" 30 seconds later the beer was off the menu. Excellent. And by the way, the two cheese ploughmans, rare roast beef, pickled onions the size of tennis balls, glorious garden, I cannot say more. Still "The Best Pub In The World"

Without a doubt, the best pub in the world, I say this for all the right reasons. I just love the one star reviews on here, they reflect whats good about The White Horse. I'll address a couple of points. Beer Samples - You don't need to, I first went into the White Horse in about 1987 and have been back many many times, I have NEVER been served a pint of ale that was not exceptional in every respect, these people know what they are doing so leave your samples for Neverspoons please. Food - This is a sad reflection on the decline of the Great British Pub - If you want balsamic glazed cod on a bed of samphire and a 'Zatar' infused mash then go somewhere else. Cheese, ham off the bone, coleslaw, fresh bread, a pickle or two, that's pub food, THIS IS A PUB! - The Kids thing, well they do stipulate 14 years, questionable maybe, but you can sit in the marquee area out the back with heaters, go when the sun is shining and your badly behaved sprogs will likely scrape a knee on the twisty uneven path in the beer garden, deal with it.

This fantastic building situated in a picture perfect village has everything going for it, until you step inside and meet the staff! We arrived at 11.50 a.m. and were the only customers but we had to wait while the barmaid was being 'briefed' on every detail of the real ales on sale. This took 5 minutes and eventually I was served and I was told that the food did not start until 12.00. At 12.15 a lady arrived from the kitchen carrying a till tray and the food servery appeared to be open. By now there were several other customers waiting to order, and the pantomime was just starting. It would appear that a customer orders at the servery, a numbered ticket is then given to the customer and the food ticket is then given to another staff member to take to the kitchen. The lady at the servery takes the order and takes the payment. If a customer pays cash then she handles this and puts the cash in the servery till. By the third customer she had rung out a change! However she dealt with this by shouting to the barmaid that she needed some change. If a customer is running a tab for their food and drink then the amount of their food order is shouted out to the barmaid. She then prepares the cold food items and plates them up, however she does not wash her hands after handling the cash. The customer is not asked where they will be sitting so important customer detail is lost. The premises has two bars, a front forecourt and a very extensive rear garden. So when a food order does leave the kitchen there is more shouting as another lady attempts to find the customer who could be anywhere! By the fifth food customer the servery lady has rung out of tomatoes, so another shout is made that she needs tomatoes from the cellar!Another lady delivers the tomatoes, not in a box or a bag but loose against her body. When our food order arrives at 12.45 my wife has to leave her seat and stop a lady from the kitchen (who is shouting the food number) from disappearing literally up the garden path. Our food order was only for two cold meals and a bowl of chips. The chips were courtesy of Bidvest or Brake Brothers and consisted of reconstituted potato. My cauliflower and cheese slice was very enjoyable and there were many examples of home made sweets on show in the display cabinet, which shows the kitchen can produce quality food. The main problem is the hygiene issues and the absurd method of food delivery to the customer, coupled with the endless shouting. So much for a quite drink!

The staff here have managed to upset everyone I have ever taken there, so I dont take anyone there any more - just drop in for a drink occasionally when walking that way.It must have taken hours of training to get their staff to be so consistently inflexible, unaccommodating and customer unfriendly Good points (only 2): good section of ales and nice hanging baskets in the summerBad points (plenty): under no circumstances will they let you taste an ale to see if you like it before you order it - hence I never order pints now. This is the only pub where I have experienced this.............!!!!! Dont even think about eating there because in my experience the food is not worth it and they will only serve what they want to serve you - not what you actually want!I arrived with some friends at just before 2 pm to eat and was told they closed for food at 2 and would not serve me.I think their raison d'etre is to see how many customers they can p**** off every day - and that is something they are very good at!!Can't imagine how it survives with that attitude - such a pity - could be a great place to go to.

A beautifully located, pretty, honest traditional pub that is a beer lover’s paradise with honest pub grub is what this place is.8 real ales served, extremely rarely nowadays, straight from the barrel and ever changing, also 3 real ciders/perry and 1 Belgian/German/occasional American ale. Plus Guinness and Thatcher’s Gold. For the lager drinkers there is Carlsberg or Stella and a good selection of bottled English and foreign largers and beers. There is a good selection of bottled conditioned ale it gets colder as well as the Westerns range of cider. That's the drinks, as for food I would say good wholesome English and importantly in this age of identikit pubs that buy frozen in bulk and microwave, it is ALL homemade, sourced locally from what is available and good value, especially for the area. It is ordered from a traditional 'cold tray', another piece of authenticity harking back to days gone by and entirely fitting in this setting. The menu changes daily based on availability. Each bar has a real fire in the colder months; the garden is impressive, especially in summer and is obviously well tended. Can get VERY busy in summer and weekends so booking an early table for food is HIGHLY advised. They do not serve food all day. It is worth noting that children are not permitted in the bar areas, though there is a large fully covered and headed canopy. All in all I highly recommend a trip here.I felt compelled to amend and reissue this review based on what I saw and heard this weekend and the subsequent negative review posted. Sometimes other customers can be so rude! This is my local pub and is almost always spot on with everything. I'd hate someone to miss out on this gem due to a poor review.

We were disappointed to see that only one roast was on offer, with only gammon, egg and chips or moussaka as the alternatives for a hot meal. We went to the food area to order Sunday lunch to be told they had run out of the roast and weren't even sure how many gammons were left and this was at 1.30pm on a Sunday!!!!! I have been out for ssssooo many Sunday lunches in so many different lovely pubs but never one like this! Father in law had booked table on phone for special family birthday meal and was told there were 2 roasts available. Table was duly booked for 1.15pm and so we arrived from far and wide on time sat down and were surprised to see that ploughmans and cold food being prepared in the bar right next to us. It became quite clear, by the use of strong swear words by the staff that things were not going well. To our disappointment there was only one roast on offer, roast beef and only 2 other hot meals, gammon egg and chips and moussaka. We duly went to said 'food area' to order to be told that the beef was no longer available. It was only 1.30pm. Other customers were queuing behind us and were equally appalled. What sort of pub offers only one Sunday roast and runs out of it by 1.30pm!!! We had no alternative but to leave to try and find somewhere to properly celebrate my MIL birthday. The White Horse is a very attractive pub situated in an equally attractive position. Hedgerley is a small village very near to the M40 & Beaconsfield but the pub is in the older part of it & if approached via one of the woodland bordered lanes leading to it gives ano impression of being in a far more rural position. The pub presents a quintessential Old English Pub exterior with white washed facade hung with flowering baskets. There are seats & tables along the front & a smallish car park to one side with more parking available in the lane outside. Very cosy bar inside with beams & usual knick knacks & pictures one would expect from a country pub. Real Ales available are listed on a board next to the serving hatch along with their strengths & descriptions. I have visited twice in the last 2 weeks & on both occasions have enjoyed a superbly kept ale of my choice. Also some ciders & Stella Artois Lager available ( maybe others- I was concentrating on the ales. ) Food is available to be ordered from a small counter opposite the bar servery. Choice of meals from the blackboard, hot & cold plus other choices from the printed menu. I thought the food was very competitively priced. No hot vegetarian meals on the board today which was a trifle disappointing but enjoyed my artichoke & leek quiche with potato salad plus fresh salad. There is a large, sloping garden to the rear of the pub which is very pleasant. All in all, a very pleasant destination for all occasions.

The White Horse is an idyllic olde English pub, with a spacious garden when it's sunny and a cosy interior when it's not. Their main claim to fame, apart from the location and atmosphere, is their beer. They keep a wide and ever-changing choice on tap, and they keep it very well. Unfortunately the food offering fails to live up to these high standards. Service seems to range from slow to, when they're at all busy, shambolic. And when the food does eventually appear, it's ordinary at best.

Great selection of beer, with many served by gravity - this is a regular winner of the Campaign for Real Ale pub award for the area.Beer festival for Easter, May bank holiday etc with a tent outside and a wide range of beers.Food is lunchtimes only. Home made, but not the widest of selections.Lovely garden and nice choice between the saloon bar and public bar (where there are more dogs and a nice nook by the fireplace).

It is rare to come across anywhere that does not cater for gluten free diets. I found the staff indifferent to the fact there was next to nothing for me to eat. I went hungry rather than pay for lettuce leaves when I had just walked 6 miles. Won't be going back.

Very poor service. We were having drinks in the garden and didn't notice time passing. When we went to get some sandwiches, we were told they stop serving food at 2pm. This was not even 1 minute past. We pleaded saying there were 4 of us and we only wanted cold food, sandwiches or quiche. But to no avail, it wasn't even busy. Well I can guess why if the service is this poor. May I suggest that as a first time visitor it would have been polite and considerate to tell us about this when we got our drinks or maybe even come out to the garden to see if anyone wants to order food before you stop serving. They did manage to ring the drinks bell for last orders, so why not for the food. I'm reasonably local but will not be visiting again.

I have been to this pub in the winter, but most often in the summer. Sitting in the garden in this pleasant village, with one of their guest beers is one of the most enjoyable parts of any visit to UK. Food is not bad (though it can be slow as this is a popular place), but the beers are a treat. We had several glasses of Citra in June. Strongly recommended.

The nearest pub to where I live so perhaps I'm biased but pub lunches have always been good and it has a nice large beer garden for a leisurely drink in the long summer evenings. Well known for its annual beer festival and the quality of its real ales.

The White Horse is a beautiful & unspoilt village pub in a lovely quiet location - the M40s just up the road, but you'd never know it. The village itself is lovely & quiet, and & this is its only pub - & a very fine one it is too, a real gem!We received a very friendly welcome on our visit, & enjoyed the lovely big well-kept beer garden out the back, unusually as its on a slope with flower beds & an aviary. Excellent beer range too, & two very quaint olde worlde bar rooms. Highly recommended - sadly one of a dying breed.

We decided to try The White Horse for a Sunday drink. I love traditional cider so tried the Druid. It tasted "off" and truly nasty so for the second round I asked the barman if I could have a small taste from the keg of the other traditional cider they offer. His reply was" no its our house policy not to give out any tasters because if we did that for everyone then we'd have no cider left." Unbelievable! Next Sunday we'll stick with our usual country pub The Blackwood Arms - much nicer cider, friendlier staff and a warmer ambience.

Great gastro pub with traditional ales and beautiful garden/scenery. Good food and not too pricey. Lovely for the kids. It's a good old fashioned pub and great to go to an independent as opposed to a chain. Yes you can get better value elsewhere but you should also factor in the fact that you are getting somewhere with good ambience and traditional ale which the men seem to love. If you want somewhere a bit nice then this could well be it especially in summer in the garden.

This is a local old fashioned village pub with an excellent choice of real ale. It is not a large corporate chain with no atmosphere and therefore appeals to those looking for a quaint surrounding with good conversation. Kevin, Janet and Dot who run it are lovely and their staff are excellent. I was dismayed with some of the recent reviews who seem to be comparing this to gastro pubs. Please no - there enough of them. Food is only served at lunch times they are not big enough for anything more and is deli type with a few hot dishes. They open all day at weekends but shut after lunch in the week, just like old pubs used to. Perhaps if people want to eat after 2 pm then they should go to a restaurant which this not and doesn't pretend to be. If you like good company, superb beer and wines and a lovely atmosphere then this pub is for you. If not do everyone else a favour and go find a chain pub in a town and stop wingeing. Congratulations to the team on providing such a lovely venue in a small rural village.

Based on the reviews we chose this pub as a good stop en route to the West country and first impressions were good. The quiet location, the beautiful flowers around the old building and the garden with umbrellas for shade.Inside it was not so encouraging with staff not exactly friendly and welcoming, and some but not a great choice of food. Ploughman dishes seemed ideal and they were prepared and served from a small corner of the main bar with all the ingredients on display. Pretty decent options they were, though nothing special and the inclusion of thick bread slices rather than baguettes or rolls disappointing . It was when we asked about closing time that our disappointment came. We asked if any food would be available after 2pm for relatives arriving at 10 minutes after 2 and told this was not possible. Furthermore the pub was to close at 2.30. We settled up before that time with a distinct lack of interest from anyone as to whether we had enjoyed the pub and its food or not.A clear impression of "take it or leave it" prevailed throughout and we decided this was not the place for us in future.Maybe locals get a better reception, though there were none of those in evidence. In fact on a busy day on the roads when many people were starting their holidays, the pub lacked customers and atmosphere..

Hidden away down a single track road, but near the M40 Beaconsfield services, this traditional pub is a real find. It is tiny, but with covered outside seating this is not a problem. All beams and stone floor inside and covered with flowers outside it looks inviting, and does not disappoint. There is a wide and unusual lunchtime menu and a fine choice of real ales. The setting is really quiet despite being so near the motorway, so if you are in the area, seek it out.

A beautiful country pub in a stunning location, cyclist friendly, good food and usually a warm welcome. A treat for real ale fans, with a stunning selection of well kept beers available on gravity. Beautiful gardens - the perfect spot for a summer's evening.Sadly, my most recent visit, late Friday afternoon/early evening, in the area and meeting up with a former colleague - our hopes were dashed, when we found the pub closed. I am making no judgement on this, because there are many genuine reasons why this might have been so. I guess the moral of the story, especially if you are going out of your way to visit the White Horse, is to check beforehand that they are actually open.

Small car park and on street parking - no wardens, Picture box looks with lots of flower baskets and black and white frontage. Just how a pub should look. Called in for lunch with my wife and we both ordered Cheese ploughmans My cheese was the smallest I have ever had served as a ploughmans lunch in a pub. It measured 3" x 1" x 1/4"and was accompanied by 1 1/2 slices of bread and a pathetic salad which included 2 thin slices of cucumber, 2 thin slices of tomato, a few scraps of red pepper and some chopped lettuce. There was also 1 small salad onion, 1 small piece of celery and a pickled onion. The red onion relish, however, was very good.Other contributors praise the White Horse but I can only speak about what we had .. And No I did'nt complain at the time as this often leads to confrontation, I will just not go back.

I work a few miles away and there are many pubs closer to the office, but I'd rather drive a few extra minutes to the White Horse. The White Horse isn't a gastro-pub, with a huge menu of dishes bought in and stored in the freezer. All the food really is home made by the two old ladies who run the kitchen. So the menu changes depending on what they've cooked this week. They also have half a dozen real ales and three real ciders available, most of which change every week or two.So, if you like real food, and real cider in a traditional pub the White Horse is hard to beat.

Not a resteraunt exactly, more a traditional beer lover’s paradise with honest grub is what this pub is.8 real ales served straight from the barrel and ever changing, also 3 real ciders/perry and 1 Belgian/German/occasional American ale. Plus Guinness and Thatcher’s Gold. For the heathens there is Carlsberg or Stella. Bottles include a good selection of Belgian beers and when it gets colder, bottle conditioned ale, Westerns range of cider. That's the drinks, as for food I would say good wholesome English. Both hot and cold are good value, especially around the area. The menu changes daily and is sourced locally. Each bar has a real fire in the colder months; the garden is impressive, especially in summer and is obviously well tended. The staff are generally knowledgeable and helpful. Can get very busy in summer and weekends so booking a table for food is advised. It is worth noting that children are not permitted in the bar areas, though there is a large fully covered and headed canopy. All in all I highly recommend a trip here.Previous reviews mention the picture being wrong – this is incorrect – the picture is on the White Horse in Hedgerley – presume it has been updated by someone.

This beautiful old pub is a local icon and one of the only free houses in an area dominated by the ubiquitous gastro pub. It is so good to go to a real pub that does its own thing. A wide range of real ales and good quality pub grub - what more could you want? There is nothing pretentious about the White Horse, it just does the simple pub stuff extremely well. We used to like this pub, and would go a fair bit and always recommended it to friends. HOWEVER, our last visit quite late one evening was with our two dogs. The rear garden was virtually empty and we decided to sit there. At a table near the gate were about 3 chaps having a drink. We assume one was the publican. Our dogs were about to be put on their lead, as the sign requested this, but they stepped about two feet through the gate only to be BARKED at by the publican who said 'Put you dogs on a lead'. No question of 'Would you mind ....', or 'Please ....'. Just his abrupt BARK. We shall not return. Pity.

Certainly nothing like the pub in the photograph. We visit occasionally because there are good walks in that area. Old raftered country pub, stone floor, furnished with a wide variety of unmatching wooden tables and chairs and lacking much comfort. Rather cold today and some heating would have been welcome. A selection of interesting cask beers but the food is incidental and ameteurish offering a cabinet of cold fare with a choice of one of three salads (carrott, pasta or potato).

This pub has recently had a bit of a facelift returning to the more distinct bar and restaurant areas it had a few years ago. Although much is made of the pub being dog friendly we arrived to find that dogs were not allowed in the area where our table had been booked, so back to the car for Fido. The staff were young and apparently leaderless. There was a vague offer to find us a table in the plastic tent outside in the garden, where dogs are allowed, but that came to nothing. We waited thirty five minutes for our soup to be served. After the first 15 minute wait, we were told the leek and potato soup had changed to mushroom, was that ok? Yes, we'd had a long walk, yes. After another ten minute wait we were told, no, it was actually parsnip soup, was that ok? Yes, anything. Though vegetarian, we would have considered eating badger soup by this point. We had ticket number 20 but when our number was called and our hopes rose, there had been a mix- up and this was someone else's meal. The brown bread had run out, so soup was accompanied when it finally arrived, by white, fluffy bread. The soup itself was delicious, I should say in the interest of balance. We also ordered a pie which mysteriously came unheated, on a freezing March day, straight from the chiller cabinet, with some undressed salad and tired potato salad. The room we ate in was crammed full of jugs, pictures, ornaments, on walls and overhead beams presumably providing a ye olde element to the dining experience. There was also a culture of notices, eg 'No muddy shoes or wellington boots in this area, ' and in the ladies' loo an informational sign about the new immersion heater. I could go on. We had a look in the plastic tents on the way out. Not inspiring. We had gone to reccy this pub for a birthday lunch, as it had been so well reviewed, but we hotfooted it out of there and booked a lovely pub ten minutes away, breathing a sigh of relief to escape the chaos and clutter.

Top place for a carvery. We come here frequently. Staff are really lovely and it's a nice atmosphere, unlimited soft drinks are well worth it. Lots on offer but be careful booking a table late in the evening as there's a higher chance they'll run out of meat. Heartbroken you've taken the dauphinoise potato/hot pot dish off the carvery. Please bring it back! My only complaint is needing to get the drinks on the table a bit quicker. We're often still waiting for them after having already started our meals. Lots of discounts and deals available if you sign up to their mailing list or download the app so that's worth doing too.

We come here quite often, for special occasions, birthdays etc. Today, I had quite literally one of the best steaks, I've ever had. Period. The chef deserves a massive raise! It was cooked perfectly. Starters (calamari, koftas and camebert) and drinks all came out hot, promptly and were all scrumptious! Mains (steaks, chicken supreme tagliatelle, pie and burger) were all fantastic! So stuffed, couldn't manage dessert, but thank you so much! Hats off, Palmers Arms has done it again!!
