We went to The Astor Grill to celebrate our daughter’s birthday. The venue is great but the food was not. One starter of calamari was cold. The burgers were overcooked and tasteless. Two of our party ordered Sticky Toffee pudding and that was cold. The waiter by accident spilled a cranberry juice cocktail over one of guest's white top. No effort was made by the team to make our daughter’s birthday special. All in all a huge disappointment for what was an expensive meal. I don’t recommend going there.

Very average! Went for my birthday - the pluses were the staff and the Beef Wellington The rest of the food / drink very overpriced! I had fish and chips - 31 pounds - the fish was about the size of the scallop with more batter that was so. Crispy it went flying when cutting into it! Staff did apologise and did credit one of the fish and chips but really poor Estella 9 pounds for a bottle!! Wouldn’t recommend other than we had just had a spa day at Cliveden which was brilliant

We parked right outside Cliveden so it was a short walk to The Astor Grill we were greeted and escorted to the champagne reception room with canapés and then to our table Christmas dinner was superb especially the roast potatoes beautiful turkey with stuffing and apricot accompanied by carrots and a loverly Yorkshire. We had a great band which I loved that really made a difference. The french guy was fantastic very attentive excellent service and the guy with the hair bun. The mince pies were the best I've ever eaten and just the right size. The crackers were great! Would definitely come back at Christmas. All the staff were brilliant. Would definitely recommend you try this at least once.

Very disappointing and terrible value While the staff were friendly and helpful and the venue wasn’t too bad though not warranting the prices charged here. The fish and chips at £ 26 per portion were so greasy that the paper they were served on pretty much disintegrated from the excess fat. After fighting through the thick batter there was a tiny sliver of fish in the middle. We have had much better from local high street take always at a fraction of the price. The chateaubriand was reasonably pleasant, which was reassuring since it cost £85 for 2, though really, for the money, this was nothing special. The dessert was a farce. I was really looking forward to a caramelised banana, as described in the banana split but instead got a plain banana that had been but in half and scorched on the flat side. No sign of any caramelisation at all, just burnt. The ice cream was cheap shop bought vegan version and very lack lustre with some cheap glacé cherries on top. It couldn’t have been much worse. Shame that the food was such a let down here and we were very disappointed considering the high prices. We were even overcharged for an already overpriced cocktail, £28 instead of £24. I would highly recommend going elsewhere and avoiding here.

We had a wonderful meal to celebrate a special occasion. The ambience and service were both excellent and the beef wellington, in particular, was exceptional (absolutely delicious) although we all enjoyed our various main courses and desserts. Our shared plate flatbread starters were nothing special and we would not really recommend them. We did think that the wine and beer was much too expensive and also the choice was much too limited and this is the reason for not giving five stars. The cheapest wine was £50.00 (and unfortunately not to our taste so we paid more - nearly £70.00 a bottle) and the bottles of beer were from £9.00 to £12.00. For this reason only, we probably won't come back, as we do enjoy a glass or two of wine with our meal (especially food of this standard) and we felt that the wine prices were just unacceptable, particularly based on the quality of the wine but also in comparison to the food prices.

This is supposed to be a top-notch eatery, at least to judge by the prices. My wife ordered two starters, soup and carpaccio, and I the chicken and bacon waffles main dish. My wife's starters arrived together and she'd long finished them when I lost patience and went in search of my meal. It had clearly been left to languish under hot lamps, and it arrived charred and dried out. The waffles tasted like dead tree bark, and the meats were little better. Any server with an ounce of sense would have served the soup to my wife as a "starter", then the carpaccio and waffles as our respective "mains". Although my wife's starters were tasty, in no way was our experience worth £70. Lazy, autopilot service, and a big disappointment overall.

We booked our 19th anniversary dinner in the Astro grill having been to Cliveden for our 10th anniversary in the main house. Was a really positive guest experience with super attentive waiting staff providing us with an excellent special occasion dining event. The anniversary card and chocolate desert from the team was a lovely and delightful surprise that helped to deliver the enhanced dining experience that you would expect at Cliveden. The intimacy of the Astro grill "inside" is well worth choosing and we'll be back again next year for our 20th anniversary. Really great service is difficult to find in the UK compared to other places around the world at times but the team at the Astor grill were a credit to the house and estate. We were very disappointed with our whole experience at Astor grill. We booked our table in advance for Easter, and was not told about the Easter set menu. We were looking forward to eat off the a la carte menu, and it was disappointing to be offered such a poor set menu for £90. The quality of the food wasn’t reflected in the price. One of our guest was vegetarian, and was served roasted cauliflower for his main course. That is not acceptable for a £90 course set menu. I also ordered a soup for starters but again it wasn’t reflected in the price. The desserts served were tiny portions. The reason we chose to eat at the Astor grill was to have a more relaxed meal, however had we known that there was an Easter menu for £90 we would have chosen to eat at the main restaurant which had a much better menu for £100, that was more reflective of the price. We go to cliveden house every Easter and have was disappointed with the quality this time. The staff were relatively polite but were not fully accommodating. We even asked to eat the food from the main restaurant, but we’re told no. This is not something we expected from a hotel of this standard.

Had always thought a Niçoise salad included tuna or at least anchovies. To charge £15 for a Niçoise salad and then an extra £11 for tuna is frankly overpriced and a little cheeky. The bill for two salads, a juice, a small and not well baked dessert (@£12) and three coffees at just under £100 is poor value and prices have gone up considerably over inflation since we last visited in 2022. A lovely venue but won’t be returning at these prices.

Our first visit (Sept 28th)… apologies for the tardiness of my review! What to say other than ‘wow!’ and “thank you”… when you learned it was our anniversary all of the staff were kind enough to write and present us with a beautiful card with such kind words… this topped off what was a really lovely evening with super food and excellent (red) wine and champagne! The setting is lovely and actually quite romantic (considering it’s actually converted from an old stables… not somewhere that one might immediately call ‘romantic’… but it was). We were celebrating 36 years of ‘togetherness’ and even now I simply cannot think of somewhere we would rather have been that evening/night. Cliveden is simply marvellous - a beautiful setting where ladies & gentlemen (or two gentlemen in our case) were treated like we were two gentlemen. First class food, served at a suitable pace, and accompanied by great wine choices and really pleasant conversations with the team members as well. We’ve had a hectic couple of months but we definitely will be back soon (early in the new year)… and just writing that energises me to get a table booked soon! Thank you again for the wonderful evening! Warmest wishes, A&S

Very Average, very overpriced. Ordered the Meze, approx £26. They actually served jarred peppers with cheese in as part of the meze similar to the ones you can buy from Tesco. I only wish I had taken a photo as it beggars belief. Steak was again over priced and served on top of a grease proof piece of paper and the Bernaise sauce lacked flavour, it was missing vinegar and tarragon, may as well call it egg sauce. Such a shame as the setting is amazing but would have been better to have eaten elsewhere and just enjoy the views from the bar. On the plus side the staff were excellent and very accommodating.

The setting of this place is beautiful but sadly very much let down by terrible food. Ordered satay chicken skewers sadly the chicken had the smallest amount of satay dripped over the 3 stick thin chicken pieces that you get for £15 I mean if this was excellent the price would be fine , the Asian slaw that came with it was bland the dressing tasted very weak , also had breads & hummus which was fine. It is what it is. Mains chipotle chicken taco 3 very small tacos with very little filling and very minimal flavour I mean for £22 it should be so much better! Also had a burger which was again nothing special. Have definitely had better for half the price beef was definitely over cooked which made the meat dry. The chips were the best thing out of the whole meal! Hats of to whoever is doing the chips light fluffy with a crunch, super! All in all should be so much better for the price, sadly we will not be returning. And did mention to the staff member when leaving it was nothing worth coming back to.

We came here for lunch in the week as we are local and NT members and we love the grounds.I was warned by a family member prior to our visit that service would be slow, but we weren’t in a rush, so weren’t too bothered that it took around 30 minutes for our starter of bread and olives to arrive. The focaccia was rock solid and obvious been baked at least a few days before - not in the morning, as it should have been. The hummus had a skin over it where it had obviously been put in a bowl and left out uncovered as it had a skin forming over it. We ordered satay chicken which came with an Asian salad. There were 3 satay sticks which were barely warm and had been fried and reheated that they were so hard my new filling nearly fell out. The salad was clearly and dressed made hours before and looked like it had been scraped out of the food waste bin. £15 for 3 skewers of chicken!!!! I wouldn’t mind if they had been freshly marinated and grilled to order, but these are frozen ones that have been bought from the Chinese supermarket! Disgraceful! I sent the food straight back and asked to bring out main course - the waitress was kind and I felt embarrassed for her having to be serving this kind of food. We had a burger and steak for main which were okay. £30 for a steak which had limp undressed rocket on the side.... We left £65 worse off after a steak and a burger and a bottle of fizzy water.I’m all for supporting restaurants in these tough times, but there is just no excuse for this kind of food to be served, especially not in somewhere like this. It is not hard or expensive to make fresh focaccia every morning and it’s not hard to marinate and grill some chicken and order some fresh salad leaves in. I would never eat here again or stay at the hotel for fear that this is what Cliveden see as acceptable standards.

Having ordered starters and mains, we were a little overwhelmed to have received all dishes at at same time so that there was little room to navigate around the table and eat in a relaxed manner. The Burrata dish was nice (but there’s not much cooking involved in plonking down an imported block of Burrata) and chopping up a few tomatoes on the plate. The hot wings were flavoured and cooked well. The burger was burnt on the outside and pink on the inside... pretty much lacked any flavour. The baked Cod was absolutely bland and didn’t particularly go well with the aubergine. I’ve never disliked Cod as much as I did this time. We cut this visit short (avoiding dessert) and got out of there as soon as possible. Whoever it is cooking, they are clearly in need of some culinary training.

Maybe I should have researched this a bit better to avoid the disappointment. However I had booked this as the final meal at the end of our short post lockdown break as a special treat. I had checked the menu online and seen some nice dishes and assumed that I was booking a Cliveden brand experience. We changed into smart clothes and I even bought a new top. I needn't have bothered! When we arrived outside the hotel we were directed to a converted building - presumably the old stables - to one side of the hotel. It felt like a National Trust cafe rather than a smart restaurant - the name Astor Grill is very misleading. The menu was not the same as the one online and was more a burger and chips based menu. Fine if that is what you are expecting but not somewhere I would choose for a special occasion. The food was okay but I would never come back here. We tried to switch to afternoon tea in the hotel but there were not any spaces - it was a shame that they could not have accommodated us to avoid the disappointment. Bit of a 'first world problem' I know but we were hoping to end our first short break in ages in style! By the way if you are visiting the hotel make sure you use the much smaller and hard to spot entrance rather than the main National Trust entrance.

We have dined at Cliveden several times over the years to celebrate special occasions. I emailed during the week prior to our visit asking if there was a dress code in the restaurant/ bar I received a reply but it did not mention that the hotel was actually going to be closed for a private function on the day of our visit. So when we arrived we couldn’t have pre dinner drinks and had to go to our table in the Astor Grill straight away.Starters were fine although you would expect an English charcuterie board to have British meats not European. Mains were good, deserts were great apart from the sticky date pudding which was cold and dry. A second one came and was crispy on the outside dry inside and both were far from sticky. But the best bit was our trip home when about 15 minutes after leaving we had to pull over on the motorway so I could be very sick. As I have an allergy to shell fish I would suggest that your storage is either not very good and the Lobster on the menu was in contact with other products or that it came into contact with my meal during cooking / serving. So all in all a very unpleasant end to what we were expecting to be a fantastic evening.I emailed Cliveden the following day to advise them of the previous nights events and felt totally fobbed off. When I replied to their response the email I received back came over as very condescending which has left us feeling very unwelcome and highly unlikely to return.

We went a few weeks ago and had a lovely meal to the point where we returned as a party of 6 to celebrate a birthday. Sadly on this occasion we left extremely underwhelmed to the point where I wouldn't return. We ordered a couple of sharing boards and then 6 rib eye steaks. The starters never arrived, the first thing we saw were the steaks. The steaks were over done, the triple cooked chips barely made it past the first cooking to the point where I sent mine back. Someone else did the same, the others just made do. By the time you've missed off starters and started sending all your meals back you might as well give up and go home. No one likes to complain particularly on a birthday celebration. They very generously didn't charge us for the starters we never received. The young lady serving us was friendly, everyone else seemed to view us as a bit of an inconvenience. The restaurant wasn't packed out and we had booked arriving on time.No one came to ask how the food was during the meal even when I had sent the first set of chips back. I rounded the bill down by a token £3.50 by way of protest (there's a 12.5% service charge automatically included) and even then no one from the senior service team came to offer an apology. As we left no one said goodbye. Our first visit with different front of house staff was superb. This one was very poor to the point where we won't be returning.

By far the only bad experience of the Hotel itself. We went to have lunch and asked for 2 Grilled lobsters with fries. Both of them half raw half cooked. Probably frozen and sadly it took almost one hour just to bring it. We asked for another one but the waiting AGAIN was just ridiculous, so we left. The manager thoughtfully tried to help us as he could but he cant cook, that's the kitchen job. 2stars for the restaurant, 5 stars for the front of the house Staff including the Host/manager

We have been here for lunch as the meal was partially included in the Spa Day. We had arancini, a sharing platter, sole and hake. As a dessert the sticky date pudding. Very professional staff, delicious food and a pleasant experience. By reading other reviews, it is true that the waiting time has room for improvements. However, we were not in a rush, so we did not mind too much.

Just got back from celebrating a double birthday for my mother and brother in law and have a mixed view of the nice meal we had. The location is, stunning! Absolutely stunning! We will be going back, just not to the Grill. The restaurant itself is absolutely lovely and the booths are so cosy and comfortable and actually quite private. The food menu was sadly quite limited for thrills. There was a selection, but nothing really exciting or what you have not seen before, none of us were impressed, which would be okay, but given the prices it really should have been a lot better. The plant pot starter was quite cute, but after that it was fairly basic. Then there was the service, which was friendly but slow and inefficient. Drinks took awhile to come and we had to repeatedly ask for a little mayonnaise! The desserts had great potential, sticky toffee, banoffee cheesecake, how could it go wrong? Sadly, very small portions, again for the price and nothing special flavour wise. Overall we had a lovely time and would perhaps go back for drinks. If they were a little bit more reasonable on price I would happily have given 4 stars, but for the price you were paying for the location, not the food.

We have been there with our young kids and had a lovely time. The staff was helpful and nice with the kids. The atmosphere and interior design is pleasant. Food was good (had the lamb burger) and local lager was good. Wide selection of wines. The estates around is gorgeous. Only minor annoyance was that a staff jumped at us while parking outside asking to reverse the car because apparently the manager wants all the cars parked back to back. That was a bit weird, but for the rest the Astor Grill was great. We will definitely be back.

We had a lovely lunch at the Astor Grill. We had tomato soup and roast chicken cobbs salad. It is really nice the interior of the grill. On a hot summer’s day, it is better to stay indoors rather than going out to the garden. The tomato soup was spot on for temperature and taste. My wife had an excellent salmon Capraccio for starter.

Oh my goodness. Go to Lomito in Gerrards cross for a much better steak. The food is average average average. The service is also very mediocre. The venue is to die for it should be its over 360 years old. The bar staff in the main house are very good. Cliveden should stop relying on the stunning house and focus on service and food. Local restaurants outshine this stunning venue which Cliveden could learn from......

This wasn’t the experience I’d hoped for. The service was really slow. Despite there being 3 staff and hardly any customers it took an hit for our pudding. Food was good but also, without asking had £30 added to bill to walk around the Gardens, which we didn’t have time to do because the food took so long. Toilets were miles away because a VIP with security was in. All in al a let down.

I received a gift voucher for 2x3 course meal in main restaurant. When I went to book was told no longer doing lunch however I could redeem voucher again afternoon tea or in Astor grill to the value. Opted for Astor grill. What a disappointing experience. We ordered a goats cheese salad, Cobb salad, crab linguine. The goats cheese salad looked like cheese on burnt toast with a few bits of greenery thrown on top. The linguine was with brown crab meat - I had expected white so was not accustomed to the very strong flavour. The Cobb salad was ok. We also ordered 2 chips. One was ok and the other was limp and cold. Upon sharing thoughts with our waiter - who was attentive - he offered to remove the discretionary service charge! Upon further discussion he bought his manager out and after a further review - where he noted all of our feedback - he offered to take the cost of goats cheese and half the linguine off the bill. We had not eaten much of either meal. It was a waste of an £80 voucher as the experience that was purchased wasn't received. Also at no time were we offered ab alternative or even a coffee! I had expected the standards to be the same as the dining room, and if honest would have liked the experience voucher returned to me do that I could experience the dining room. The Astor Grill unfortunately did not meet my expectations or those of the guests I treated.

We met my son and his family here for lunch recently - quirky surroundings in the old stables and attentive friendly service. The food was good if a bit on the pricey side (especially with the addition of a surcharge for diners who aren't members of the National Trust!) Be warned hat a visit to the toilet involves going outside and around the corner - an even longer trek to the disabled loos which require a member of staff to unlock them.

We ate here 2 nights in a row (once inside in a cozy booth, once at an outside table) for a change of pace from the very formal dining atmosphere and menu at the Cliveden House. Tasty casual local dishes included Baked Honey and Wild Garlic Tunworth, Pea and Mint soup, battered fish and halloumi burger. Very attentive service. The horse-themes touches in the decor (light handed and not over the top) allude to the previous life of the building (stables). Most enjoyable.

We dined in the grill one night during our weekend stay at the Cliveden. This restaurant was a nice alternative to the more formal dining room in the hotel. This restaurant allows dogs, so we made friends with the couple nest to us and their two dogs. The service was very good, generous wine pours, and good food. The steamed date pudding was excellent. The grill is in the converted stables, so it lends itself to fun atmosphere.

Had a very enjoyable lunch especially as dogs allowed in the restaurant. Service was attentive but not over the top. Menu choice varied and not as pricey as you would expect. Drink prices however reflected the surroundings far more. The salads, crab fettuccine, breads and fries all excellent. The haloumi burger however was dry and luke warm although the onion compote served with it was delicious. Overall excellent and would return. Did not complain about the burger as it would have spolit the day.
