The White Hart in West Berkshire

We visited for a roast dinner yesterday - the food was truly outstanding and great value for money. Loads of veggies were included and dessert was a real treat. Highly recommend.

Really pleasantly surprised. Nice service, very reasonable food, good surroundings. All round ok. Hopefully the new chef starting this week will expand the menu and differentiate them from the numerous ordinary pub menus locally.

This pub has new people running it and it seems to have had a makeover as well. There was a nice friendly welcome and the service couldn’t be faulted. We had a light lunch but what we had was excellent and seeing what was being served to others made us want to come back for more next time. Keep up the good work and it’s a very promising beginning

We were greeted warmley and we asked if we could have lunch, and that we had a dog so could we be out of the way. No problem at all , we were taken to a nice table in the corner. Food was great delicious burger and fat chunky chips. A very nice team indeed, and as the pub started to fill up, we think a wedding was about to take place in at the local church, the team behind the bar, never forgot about thier customers, they already had. Warm and friendly, great food, who could ask for more.

This was our first meal at the new White Hart pub and it didn’t disappoint. The food portions are generous and good value for money. We will definitely return for many more meals!

Could have been a great pub! But was their last day serving! Would have been better if they had called me and offered a cancellation! No menus to be able to choose meal, not a lot left to choose from. Even if last day serving, get a chalkboard up with prices!?! I had been bigging, the place up for weeks as looked and was told amazing! Huge let down!

Excellent food and nice atmosphere in this lovely village pub. I had a superbly cooked steak - very tasty. My wife had the burger which was equally good, so she tells me ... didn't offer me a nibble though did she? Really friendly staff and good service. The pub had been a little dormant through and post covid and I think there's a new team in place giving it a new lease of life - very impressed with the revamped decor, menu options and service. Proper pub good value.

We came not too long ago (me and my girlfriend) and the pub was in great condition the food was brilliant and the service was very fast and efficient the staff were all on it and we couldn’t of been happier special mention to Jac who made our visit very comfortable and he looked very busy give the fella a pay rise, will definitely be back again soon

Lovely pub! Great guy who works behind the bar Very cosy inside with plenty of space outside Nice clean toilets as well. We will be coming back for some food! To top it off there is a pub cat ❤️

Nice cozy olde worlde village pub. Sunday roast was all that was on offer but it was nice, beef was perfect. Good value for money.

Stopped of here after "The Living Rainforest". Dog welcome and very friendly. All the people enjoyed thier food. Good quality pub grub. I had the most tasty Curried vegetable soup. Recommended

Great home cooked food, both main menu and Sunday lunch. Friendly staff, fair prices and good accessibility. Can also cater well to gluten free (although would be good to have allergens labelled on the main menu). Ps. Love the cookie dough pudding - rare to find on a menu!

Let us down badly. Website said open, and food available on a Monday. Arrived, place locked up, disappointed and hungry grandchild. Looked very down at heel. Perhaps a bad day, staff shortages etc. We understand, but post it on your website so we dont make a fruitless journey please?

Fab meal tonight, we went for the Wednesday night special of steak, I’d my favourite Rump - rare, and it was perfect! He had Sirloin - med/rare also perfect! The sides of chips/new potatoes and mushrooms brilliant, also a lovely atmosphere, no frills, just very relaxed - brilliant tasty- highly recommend and service was attentive, but not over the top x 😋

Absolutely fantastic pub. Lovely building and welcoming staff. The food was excellent (the stake and the ribs were particulary good) and the wine was great. Highly recommended.

We made a point of stopping here for lunch on our cycling trip from Oxford to the New Forest, as we'd stayed overnight at the pub a few years ago and really enjoyed it. We weren't disappointed - a perfectly judged steak sandwich and a pint of IPA, then coffee. I was interested to see they have brewed their own beer here in the recent past, though not at present. Will make a point of coming back for an overnight stay soon so we can explore the menu and wine list more fully.

Dropped in about 2pm on Sunday afternoon. Very warm welcome and friendly staff. Ordered couple of delicious Sunday dinners. They were lovely and tasty! After dinner we we're joined by one of the locals. Highly recommend!

What a fantastic find. My daughter took me here for Fathers Day. Beautiful clean welcoming pub with great service. We had the pulled pork burgers for something a little different. WOW! so tasty. Will definitely be back. A truly lovely traditional pub that obviously cares about their customers.

Disappointing after reading reviews. Dirty table. Had to mix my lime and soda myself. Limited menu- fair enough on a Sunday when a roast being served. Only thing for me was the veggie chilli- went for child portion. Mush- obviously left over veg. £9.95. My daughter did enjoy her £15.95 burger.

Fast service. Nice bar maid. Good snacks and meals available. Bit expensive for what we ordered though I thought. Tap water fridge cooled in bottles in the fridge was free though.

Eight of us had lunch on Easter Sunday. Excellent service and delicious food freshly cooked. Everyone enjoyed the choices they had made. The staff couldn't have been more friendly and efficient if they had tried. A lovely welcome and pleasurable few hours spent eating, laughing and celebrating.

Got to the pub early and found that the table was booked for seven customers, not by me but another family member. Eventually eleven arrived. No problem for the staff who quickly arranged additional seating. Food ordered including roast dinners, burger and various other dishes. All the food arrived at the same time, hot and well presented. We all agreed the food quality was excellent. The staff in my opinion were great and dealt with the situation in a professional manner and throughout gave us excellent service. Well done to all staff at this pub who clearly have a can do attitude when confronted with problems that need resolving.

We brought our rescue dog Jack here and it was his first time to a pub. He was quite nervous with the new surroundings and unfamiliar people, but the pub owner was so great with him, and even removed her crutches to slowly and calmly get down on the ground to offer Jack some treats (which he eventually very much enjoyed!). Staff really did all they could to make him (and us) feel welcome and we really appreciated all their kind gestures. Thank you so much for the warm welcome, and we hope to be back soon!

After a visit to the Living Rainforest nearby, we called for a table and were given a confirmation immediately. On arriving we had a cozy table for 8 in a large room by the side. Fantastic service from the staff. We ordered chicken nuggets and chips for the kids, some cauliflower florets as starters and then a chicken roast, veg chilli and lentil burgers for mains. The food was really delicious. The desserts from the board provided a great choice. The chocolate brownie and honeycomb cheesecake were amazing. A great independent village pub that totally surpassed expectations.

Went as one as a party of four, I had the White Hart burger, two of our party had the roast chicken Sunday dinner whilst the fourth had the beef Sunday dinner. Service a bit slow but not a major issue. Very pleasant young staff servers enhanced the experience. We all said the food was very tasty and portion side was adequate. A warm and cosy environment within the pub made, coupled with the food, for a enjoyable Sunday lunch. Well worth a visit.

A family birthday visit for 8 people, everyone had a fantastic meal, regardless of the menu choice, all the starters, mains and desserts were superb. Three different choices of roast beef (rare, medium and well done) were all catered for expertly, great veg, tasty roasties and cracking Yorkshires!! The puddings were equally splendid, great welcome and hospitality throughout. Thoroughly recommend a visit

Good sound pub food, great beer (Timothy Taylor Landlord), professional friendly staff.

The White Hart has this classic recipe exactly right. If on the menu have it. Fish and Chips needs working on as batter soggy. Service very good and cat behaved itself.

Polite and accommodating. Managed to fit us in at very short notice for Sunday lunch. Delicious roast potato's. Veg soggy and overcooked. Pork was very fatty. Didn't stay to look at the puddings. A classic 3 star middle of the range experience and nothing more.

This was our 2nd visit and we weren't disappointed. The menu is a delight and the food prepared to perfection. We will be back!

Lovely evening meal with my family. Lovely setting, rustic decor and convivial ambience, friendly staff. The menu is straightforward but has plenty to choose from, with some good specials too. The rack of ribs is possibly the best I have eaten, my wife’s fish cakes off of the special menu were also very good and all food was nicely presented as well as delicious. The desserts didn’t disappoint either, topped with a wonderful cinder toffee. The whole family enjoyed the visit and we have vowed to return.

Visited after a walk. We booked ahead but weren't welcomed and found our own way to our table. The menu was limited and it was difficult to find something for all five of us. We resorted to the specials board and the pork tenderloins were tasty but for £17.95 it was hardly a plateful. The fish cakes were ordered as a main which confused the chef for some reason. There was only one other group having food, so being busy was not an excuse for the slow arrival of the food. The fish cakes were almost inedible! Served on a bed of raw red cabbage, so salty and really not nice. We couldn't get the bill quick enough! That was difficult in itself. Staff were hard to find! Eventually we shouted at a waiter for the bill. It arrived and was a shock! They had put three times the amount of drinks on it, but that aside, it came to £100 for five very poor meals. Two gin and tonics, half a lager and an orange juice. It wasn't busy, the service was very poor, the food was worse and the cost unacceptable. We will never return and will be telling others to avoid it. The village was busy due to a local market yet the pub was quiet. Perhaps the locals were better informed than we were and were giving it a wide berth. I suggest everyone does the same.

We all had a wonderful lunch - but the ceasar salad was the best I've ever had. The others had baguettes which were all lovely and fresh. Great service too. If you go have the ceasar salad!!!

Delicious takeaway from the White Hart this evening. My fish and chips were still light and crispy after the journey back to Compton, the Chicken Chorizo risotto was absolutely lovely and Rob's burger disappeared in double quick time.Topped off the meal sharing a couple of the Cheesecake of the Week slices. I have ordered take away Roast Beef and Brownies two weeks running from The White Hart since the country has been on lock down. Both meals have been 11/10. Unbelievable food. The quality is stunning. The meat perfectly pink, potatoes the best balance between crispy and fluffy, gravy is AMAZING and the veg is perfect. Huge Yorkshire’s too. But... the brownie.... please order from them just for the brownie if nothing else. Lighter than air yet still an amazing goo filled brownie. Unbelievable. The service has been so polite and kind and accommodating while abiding by social distancing rules. I can’t wait till the pub opens again fully so I can go in and thank them personally for cheering up my weekends.

I recently visited The White Hart during one of their events. The food was delicious and the staff were just wonderful, they really couldn’t have been more accommodating, although this was an extremely busy evening for the restaurant the team worked hard and went above and beyond to make sure we were well looked after. I couldn’t ask for more and my partner and I can’t wait to return!

As always the food and service was brilliant. Haven’t been for a few years due to moving out of the area. There were 8of us all meals came out promptly and I can still highly recommend the baileys cheesecake dessert.

If you are looking for a truly traditional English pub then The White Hart is a must! With a cosy atmosphere, a roaring fire, delicious hearty food and fine wine, this is a pub which I can totally recommend. Whilst staying with family in the village, The White Hart is the local and what a local it is!

Friends kept telling us how good the White Hart still is and not having been there for a year or more we decided to visit on Valentine's night. We were delighted to find that it matched our previous good experiences in all aspects and the special menu for the night went above and beyond the normal menu. It is such a pleasure to find a pub like this and the staff work so hard to make it a success. We won't leave it so long next time!

I had visited the White Hart in the summer and enjoyed an amazing fish and chips with the most incredible home made mushy peas, and had been looking forward to a re-run when I went for dinner recently. My heart sank when I saw that the fish and chips had come off the menu (to return in future, I was told), but I substituted with a really hearty and flavourful Morroccan Lamb Shank that I was so happy to have been "forced" int trying. Very pleasant service. Will be back again (hopefully with the fish and chips)!

Unexpectedly I went to stay with a friend in Hampstead Norreys and given it was a Sunday we both really fancied a roast and as we were in no mood to travel we opted for the White Hart. It’s a proper village pub, but scrubbed up, with no sticky tables or carpet and with a friendly team.It was awesome that we could already have a roast quite early at 6pm (and it did not feel like it had been heated all day). I opted for the Beef and my friend had the Pork. Both were really rather good. They were happy to provide extra Yorkshire puddings, crackling and oodles of gravy. To round it all off the price was very reasonable. It proved quite the find with friendly service and an excellent option if you are in the area.

The White Hart is my local, so I have been many times, but it simply never fails to serve fabulous food, always with a smile. I have sometimes thought that I could choose my food with my eyes closed by putting a random pin into the menu, as I have never eaten a meal there that is anything short of excellent. The bar staff are friendly and helpful and nothing is ever too much trouble for them. Five stars - very well deserved.

I Have been to the white hart Hampstead Norreys numerous times over the years and after trying lots of other places in the area today 11 of my family members all got together to celebrate birthdaysand to enjoy a lovely Sunday lunch together . We were so happy that we came back to the white hart. It was busy but the staff were all very attentive but also gave us plenty of time to eat , settle the kids and make a mess opening presents and generally having a good time catching up . The food was excellent , every course and every dish was very tasty and well presented , you can not fault the food at all and the menu has a great selection on offer . We all has a very enjoyable lunch over several hours and will definitely be going back again very soon , they never disappoint which is a rare find . Thank you

Last Friday evening we were a large group of 23+ celebrating with a pre-wedding dinner. The food was excellent and the service was fabulous. All guests were very complimentary about their experience. Thank you to all.
