The George in West Berkshire

Called in for lunch - we had chicken and tomato omelette with jacket potato. The omelette was no more than 1 cm thick and had very little chicken and tomato - I also doubt it was made with fresh eggs - tasted more like the powdered stuff. My jacket potato wasn’t cooked well - it needed a longer cooking time. Our meals certainly weren’t worth the £32.90 they came to. I will say that the coffee was good.

We went there as a group on Grand National day. The George was very busy, but that did not detract from the warm, efficient service we received. Yes, the service was great and the food was amazing. I will admit that I was expecting plain “pub food”, but my fish ( fish and chips) was really fresh and in the lightest, crispiest batter, friends who had the southern fried chicken burger are still raving about the taste. Called in for a quick light lunch and this pub delivered good food and pleasant efficient staff. Just what a pub to be and the Guiness was superb.

When I contacted The George in Lambourn I requested a quiet table for four people. On entering the pub we were hit by the sound of loud music. I explained that I had requested a quiet table and we were shown to a table away from the bar area. At this moment in time there was one gentleman standing at the bar looking at his smart phone and our group of four people who are in their 70’s.The question has to be asked, who is benefitting from this music? It certainly wasn’t easy listening music so I can only guess that it was for the benefit of the young member of staff. During our time there another three men came in aged in their 50s and I saw a young lady being served at the bar. Following my conversation with the member of staff on entering the pub I got the impression that it would be left to me to decide on the volume of music. This is not a satisfactory way to deal with guests. The food can only be described as average and my heart sank when the member of staff carried the food to the table in his hands. The plates were barely lukewarm. This brought our visit to Lambourn to a disappointing end especially since we had an underwhelming experience at the Goodies café earlier in the day.

Extremely personable young water and very good food. We would definitely visit again. Busy Saturday evening - pleasant atmosphere.

My son's family have just moved to the village and I met my DIL for lunch. Thought we would give this pub a go. Looked lovely from the outside, and we quickly discovered it was just as lovely on the inside too. When we walked in, we were warmly greeted by the friendly barmaid (could be landlady for all I know 🤷🏼‍♀️) and offered a seat for lunch where we could fit a pushchair in too. Our order was taken at the table and food was super quick, and very tasty indeed. Plenty of it and good value for money. The pub had a warm friendly feel to it. The toilets were very clean with a nice scent to them. I have to say I was impressed and will absolutely be returning.

It's a really nice place to eat 😋😋😋😋 It's my go to please when I'm in the town. Fantastic food with lots of choices.

Tracing my steps to see where I came from, as I was adopted, and met here for a drink and light lunch. Female member of staff was perfect. Lovely welcome, big smile, and able to hold a conversation. We tested her on the Guinness and she poured it perfectly first time - credit to her trainer whenever that was. Very clean establishment and in very good condition. Would make it our local if we lived nearer. Lunch was just what we needed before we walked around the village tracing the heritage of my big family. Will definitely visit next time we are back in the area.

We had an enjoyable meal and they made an extra effort to make my relative feel special on his birthday- a nice kindness from The George. Thanks very much to the team at this important village pub!

First time back in our local since lockdown and I'm so pleased to say that the Sunday roasts are still as brilliant as they were previously if not better and a cracking portion too, will be defo be back probably every Sunday, only 5 mins walk for us, great service too 👍

Met with friends here as a halfway point between London and Gloucestershire as not too far off the M4. Beautiful village. Had Sunday lunch which was very nice, plentiful and well priced. Obviously a good village locals pub. There was nothing pretentious about it. Social distancing measures were excellent. The young staff were very attentive. I would definitely return.

A Christmas get together with friends and we weren’t disappointed. The quality of food was very high and the service from staff is excellent. The Christmas Menu has plenty of choice, the Chocolate Orange Cheesecake was to ’die for’ and we’ve taken notes on how to roast our Brussels. If we could give ten stars we would.

Friendly local pub. Good range of pub food, tasty and nicely presented. Nice Saturday lunch. We’ll be back.

Popped into our local coz we couldn't be bothered cooking and as per usual lamb was beautiful and pink, stuffed pork was soft and tender and dont even mention the sticky toffee pudding all for 30 quid what more could you want, recommended, make sure you book though ......

Was recommended to try The George after visiting my sister and spending a morning on the gallops in Lambourn. Really nice vibe to the pub, friendly staff and regulars (!) great food and was well worth e visit.

This pub offers a nice vibe in the heart of the village where dogs are welcome. The pub is clean and tidy and the bar staff are attentive. The food is good and of a good standard pub food. This pub also offers a takeaway pizza service which is awesome and the pizza is much better quality then what you would find of a normal pizza takeaway. Overall i would recommend this to people passing through the village who would like some "pub grub" and would give this a comfortable four out of five stars.

Went for lunch today extensive menu and great atmosphere. Opted for the steak ciabatta which was filled to the brim with tender sirloin steak. The salted chilli fries were the perfect accompaniment. The thing that made the lunch most enjoyable was the jolly waiter with the lily white legs and shades to die for.

The George is always welcoming. We had lunch today and the choice is amazing (there is something for everyone here!). The quality of food was great and the standard of service is very high. Definitely worth a visit!!

Nice surroundings badly let down by very poor quality food. Steak in steak ciabata was so full of gristle that I couldn't get my teeth through it. Accepted waitresses offer to change it only for her to have the chef refuse to because I had managed to scrape a few scraps of meat off the sinews! Her obvious embarrassment was the only mitigating factor.

Had a very nice meal here with my parents for Mothers Day after visiting one of the local racing yards. Food was delicious & the staff were friendly & efficient. Would have been 5 stars, but we had quite a long wait for our main courses to come out. However the pub was full & very busy with Mothers Day diners, so it was understandable & we didn't mind too much & certainly wouldn't have complained. I would recommend & would eat here again if visiting the area in the future.

A lovely welcome, The pub was busy as it was Mothering Sunday. We were shown to our table and given menus and in a short time the waitress was back to take our order. We didn’t have to wait long and our food arrived ,piping hot and with a dish of fresh vegetables.. we really enjoyed our lunch and would visit again. Lovey friendly staff and a great lunch.

We were on a work Christmas party weekend at Ridgeway house and chose The George for our Saturday afternoon meal. We were welcomed as we walked through the door and directed to the table we had pre booked. The staff were great and asked us to let them know as soon as all of our party had arrived and they would get the food going. We had a few latecomers but that was no problem for them and we received our meal really quickly even though there was another large table being served. The food was amazing. I thoroughly recommend the George Burger that I had, it was easily the best pub burger I’ve ever had (and I’ve had a LOT!). There was a slight error with the order but this was rectified immediately. The atmosphere was good, and we even had the pleasure of meeting Boris the Tibetan Mastiff who visited with one of the locals. If you’re ever in Lambourn then you need to visit. Fantastic!

We were seven in our group coming into a quiet country pub restaurant that Tuesday evening about 8pm and were greeted like we were long lost family!

This is a good pub in the centre of Lambourn. Spacious inside with some nice sofas near the bar. Food is good, I had a very nice steak burger which filled me up. Not too expensive really. The only thing I would flag up is that the locals when we were there were very colourful with language to match. One seemed to be using the f word as some sort of punctuation. It was actually quite funny for us, but if you’re a prude be warned!

Booked ahead for our Sunday lunch enroute to the Cotswolds.

Haven't been to this venue for years and was pleasantly surprised. It still needs some TLC in places but overall quite improved. Bar staff friendly and attentive. I was also impressed with the quality of the meal I ordered. So the only reason I haven't rated it 5 is that some of the interior needs some attention.

I was keen to have a nice lunch mid week and wanted to visit our local pub and support it. Unfortunately things did not get off to a good start. The draft beer Arkell's 3B was not at it's best, it was cloudy and on the turn, so asked to swap it for a draft lager which the lady behind the bar kindly did.

Lunch for 4 on a Sunday. Restaurant not busy. Had a long wait at the bar to be served and then waited well over an hour for our food to appear. The food was nice but worried that the girl who bought it out didnt know the difference between lamb and beef. Another long wait for desert even though we did mention at that point that my niece was in a rush to get to work. Im a smoker but didnt like the fact that all the smoke from outside was blowing right in to our table. Nice food (but soggy yorkshire pud) and reaonably priced but i wont be back in a hurry

The Goerge is a fantastically run pub with friendly staff and really enjoyable food, I will always pay The George a visit when we are in town!

Arrived with nine family members for a late lunch (1.30pm) Nothing was too much trouble. Nearly every family member requested a change to the item they chose from the menu From Sweet potato fries to brie and bacon ciabata with no bacon. Extra sauces and cream provided upon request. Very enjoyable last minute get together.

Popped in for lunch with my parents and my daughter and we all had the offer of sandwiches or hot dog for £13.50 and the bread used for the sandwiches is beautiful!! So soft and fresh. The food is so tasty and presented really nice. It comes with skinny fries and the portion size is great, more than enough. The drinks are reasonably price too.

Staying locally and walked to the George for Sunday lunch , it was busy with a good atmosphere, it was snowing and was quite scenic. A choice of roast lunches, reasonable food at fair prices, service was slow however and we had to get our drinks from the bar otherwise the wait made us thirsty.

Good pub. Staff are friendly and welcoming, and the service is normally pretty good. Food is standard pub food, but is well prepared and well presented.

You can throw a rock from end to end in Lambourn, but you'd likely put a window out at The George with it being in the very center of this sleepy hamlet.

Was not planning to go to this place, but our walk ended up at a closed pub on the gallops! Lovely service here and menu covers most people's needs! Ribs were lovely and and good portions! Well done to the chef for such a good menu and the bar lady for looking after us so well! Very worth a visit if you are in the area!

You'd think in the English countryside they wouldn't chimp potatoes for fill rather than the beef they post on the menu. But they do.

I was looking for somewhere close to the church in Lambourn, as I had two 85+ year olds with me and we were all going on to a funeral at 2pm. The George has a Car Park at its rear and it was easy from there to access the dinning room. We all ordered Fish & Chips, which was good, I was thankful that we have plenty of time because it did take quite a long time to come. When it did arrive it was great, the tartare sause was delicious.

As the Malt Shovel was closed with an Up For Sale sign hanging outside we drove around and discovered The George. Parking was easy but walking into the bar it wasn't exactly warm. The waitress said the heating was on full, but where we sat in the dining room we couldn't feel the warmth of the log fire in the main bar.We ordered Hunters Chicken in wraps with sweet potato chips.The service was a little slow but as the food was freshly cooked this was acceptable. The Hunters came in two wraps each and tasted very good, The highlight was the sweet potato chips. They were fantastic. Light, crisp without a trace of fat or grease. I wish I could do them as well at home.If the establishment had been warmer I would have awarded five stars.

Food was all decent pub food but we were in for over an hour before we received our food. Even then they had a miscommunication so they left out my brothers meal. They came out 20 minutes later with the wrong dish, but in the end didn't charge us for this. Might have been a one-off bad luck. Staff was very friendly and also gave my brother a pint on the house out of goodwill.

I have eaten here on several occassions when here through work. They have a great menu and the food is really nice!

Having read several reviews that raved about the George, we met up with another couple there for lunch. After a wait and then having to introduce myself at the bar which was busy with lunchtime drinkers (well it's a pub) we were shown to a table. Our meal took quite a while to arrive maybe as we ordered starters. The people on the next table had finished their roasts before ours arrived and they had arrived after us!. The starters were very tasty but the main meal was average. There was a misunderstanding about whether a stir fry should be hot or cold! that the staff were were very keen to put right and did so by producing a fresh hot one in record time.In truth after having had many lunches in the area there are many other pubs that do an excellent lunch not too far away.Would I return, for a drink yes a meal no.

Since moving to Lambourn I have tried just every pub in the area , but it's this one that seems to keep drawing me back.The food is always good here , it's not Michelin star or anything special, it's just alway good tasty and very well presented food that you should never be unhappy with. The staff are always helpful and friendly and the place is always very clean.If I am to be critical, then sometimes the food can take a little to long if it's busy or there is only 1 person behind the bar, but that only happened twice and we're both Monday lunchtimes and I've visited here over 15 time now. Yes I like this place.

We was recommended to visit The George by friends which have visited a few times. I had heard nothing but good things from The George and decided to go for a Sunday lunch with the family. Not only was the food 5* so was the service. Such a lovely atmosphere and such lovely staff especially Oliver, he couldn't have been more accommodating. I will defiantly be back in the future and be recommending to all of my friends and family. Thank You again for such a lovely meal and afternoon.

Stopped off for a late lunch as we drove through the area and were pleasantly surprised. We both ordered soup of the day and ham sandwiches from the "lite bites" menu. The carrot soup was hot and delicious and with the sandwich was a perfect serving. Good service. Excellent value for money.

Initially, this place was appalling but, now the new Landlord has taken over, he had literally turned the place around. Subtle (and often quirky) decor, good range of beers and lagers. The Guinness (hubby's choice) never fails to please. Keep up the good work is all I can say! May treat ourselves to a meal one day instead of the "usual" Chinese Takeaway

Heard very good things locally about this pub so decided to try it for lunch with family. We arrived at 1.30pm and there was only one person working. We let the lady know which table we had chosen and she came with menus. She said she would return in 'a few minutes' to take our order. There was a mixture of people who had eaten, a couple waiting for their food and a few at the bar. The pub got busier, a group of cyclists arrived and we still had not ordered. I had to go to the bar at 2pm and ask a young lad if he would take our order; the children were very hungry so we asked if we could have some chips to keep them going - which came very quickly. Eventually, at 2.30pm our food arrived. It was reasonable, I chose halumi and olive sizzler; not good choice. halumi and olives very salty so the overall taste was too salty for my liking. The fish and chips my daughter had were very good and the children's meals were good too.

Arrived at 1.00 and ordered 3 lunches. Still waiting at 2.15 for food. The waitress has not approached us to apologise for the wait or anything. Had to ask where our food was. She said she would check. Watch this space....

Good pint, offered a taste while choosing, a clear decent real ale. Had the steak burger with skinny fries, well worth it the steak was great with just a hint of spice in a rustic bun, the bun was slightly to large for me couldn't eat it all, but someone with a larger appetite would be happy, the Cole slaw was ok, my thinking is a larger portion and coarsley cut would make this a meal to die for.Wife had the cod and chips, very nice enjoyed it, again the skinny fries where great, only slight moan was a few bones at one end of fish, but this would be the fishmongers fault not the restuarants..

Popped in late one afternoon & had a hunters chicken burger. Beautiful! A generous chicken breast, lovely roll, proper thick bacon, tasty fries, and salad garnish with lovely dressing. My mother had the chicken, bacon & avocado roll, which she loved too. Thoroughly recommend this place with it's friendly & helpful staff & great food..

My son and I stopped in The George after a nearby football tournament and found the staff extremely friendly and welcoming. We both had the Steak Burger with Fries and we agreed it was possibly the best burger we had eaten. Presentation was 10 out of 10, the fries served in a miniature deep fat fryer basket is a great idea. After losing in the final on penalties, this lunch certainly picked us both up. Thank you.

Visited twice and they do straight forward pub food with nice presentation, good portion size, arriving hot and tasty at reasonable prices with good service...what more could you want!!

Popped in for a treat with my wife on our way home, we visit often and are never disappointed , an excellent choice of food with a range of starters , mains and desserts to suit all tastes and diets all served up and looked after by the lovely staff all more than willing to do what it takes to make your visit memorable

Went there on a whim with the grandson. Quickly seated and drinks delivered. Roast beef was very good as was the veggie toad in the hole. Accompanying vegetables freshly cooked and hot. Service excellent Lots of ex jockies at the bar making it a fun atmosphere. Would come again. Lovely

We visited for the first time on a Sunday lunchtime during the Euro soccer championships. We were impressed with the overall layout and this seems to be an independently owned and managed pub that gets it right. The staff were pleasant and attentive; good selection of drinks; good menu that included a Sunday only lunch menu but other items continue to be available on Sundays (I have a gripe when on only a limited traditional menu is available on Sundays) . Sport, particularly horse racing, is popular with 3 TV screens but they are sensibly located so one can watch if one wishes (I did) but one can also find space away from them if you not . .

Had dinner at The George on Tues, 7th June. I chose the salmon and have to say that it was as good as any that I have had anywhere. My starter and dessert were also very good and the waitress was friendly, charming and efficient. My two companions were equally satisfied with their choices. I certainly look forward to eating at The George on my next visit to Lambourn. Full marks!

Last minute decision on a Friday evening to get seven adults and three youngsters out to eat, rather than cook or get take away. Lived in Lambourn for almost a year and this was our first visit. Table reserved and laid up ready at around 30 minutes notice, despite already being quite busy. Prompt service for drinks and no pressure to order quickly. When we did order, food took a little longer than expected to arrive, but was generally worth the wait. Everybody was quite happy and portions were generous. Personally I like to use the in house made burger as a good indication of standards, and here at the George I was impressed and would go so far as to say it was one of the best I have had in the area for quite some time. Will put the George on my list of locals to be revisited. Can recommend highly based on our experience.

family of 6 visiting on Friday night. fish and fizz was a good idea. food was ok we all ate it. but comments from the table like could do the same at home for myself. not much effort into presentation of the food. but again we ate and enjoyable evening. decor and staff are nice

Whether you want a chilled out dining experience with typical pub grub, or a more lively Friday or Saturday night out The George is the place to go in Lambourn. Excellent service from friendly barmaids, good parking, and plenty of seating. The only reason this doesn't get 5* is that there isn't a great selection of ales, as the locals seem to prefer cider. Easily the nicest pub in Lambourn.

Visited The George Lambourn on a Saturday this March and was presented with a very reasonably priced lunch menu! from soups and sandwiches to sea bass and pastas! I can highly recommend the Mushroom soup and ham sandwich! Bar staff extremely welcoming and attentive! Great atmosphere sun shining so had the choice either to sit in the pretty outside area or inside with the rugby and racing showing on the TVs. Will defiantly be visiting again soon!

I ate here on a Saturday afternoon with my Mum & a friend.Lovely clean bright pub with a nice seating area.There was plenty to choose from and you could have 2 meals for £12 (on a certain menu) my Mum had a plentiful bowl of soup that came with a sandwich & myself & friend had a pulled pork sandwich with skinny fries & a duck wrap with skinny fries with an extra portion of swéet potato fries.All the food was really nice.We shared the chocolate cake for pudding.The staff are very attentive & I asked the young waiter where the cake was made & he went off for at least 10 minutes to find out.A child/dog friendly pub although the dogs aren't allowed past a certain area.It was really relaxing just eating and chatting.Will definitely be returning.

Had our office Christmas lunch here. Excellent choice of dishes on a set menu. The food was really tasty and the staff are very friendly and helpful. What more could I ask for.

Since The George has been refurbished following new ownership, the new owners have added a variety of activities which only go to enhance the appeal of the pub. For example, as part of the Lambourn's Christmas Evening last Friday they laid on an Ice Skating Rink in the car park which drew even more people to the village centre. This, along with the music nights and other activities including the parading of the 2015 Grand National winner, locally trained "Many Clouds" has reinvigorated this old pub.They do great food and drink as well.

Popped in for Sunday lunch, friendly helpful staff. Good value roast and good beer: food was good but potatoes and chicken skin too salty, which is my only reason for rating of avarage... Would otherwise have been rating of very good. We mentioned the over salting to staff who said they'd tell the chief, we will be going back and hope to be able to improve rating.

We stopped by to have late lunch, but unfortunately the kitchen was closed at 5pm.We had refreshments, 2 espresso and a cappuccino, payed around £14 in total.Lovely atmosphere, locals seemed very friendly, but the cappuccino was not nice at all, could not drink it.

This is a bit of a local pub for local people and being in the area it is its full of horse racing based staff however it is a lovely little pub that served great value food and the staff and locals are all very nice.
