After complaint ( wine arrived without top and tasted like it had been mixed & steak was fatty) I received the following by email - nothing during dinner though.“ I am equally disappointed with your experience here at The Hare & Hounds as you are. It is simply not what you should expect from us.Given you took time out of your day to provide feedback, it gives me hope there is a chance to win you back and make this right. Greg, it’s important to me that you know that hospitality and making my guests happy is what keeps me going, and I do not take negative feedback lightly. Please allow me some time to regroup with my team and get back to you”Never heard anything back and when I tried to reply to email it was a ‘no-reply’ email address. For a £135 bill ( for 2 people, excluding the service charge) I expected a lot better !

The characterful oak framed building should provide the best eating experience but there was a lost opportunity to put the lovely oak beamed dining room to good use. It was just that the flooring and furnishings were more village hall than country restaurant.Carpeting is never a good call in a restaurant and the use of a good quality engineered oak boarded floor would change the character in a stroke and with some careful changes to the furniture and addition of ‘character’ decor the ambience could be very good. The food, although quite simplistic for our Sunday lunch, was in fact very good and the beef was perfect. Service for us was timely and the waiting staff were friendly and helpful. Not an ‘occasion’ venue though and more likely to choose something more upmarket for a celebration next time or even a character country pub.

The Hare & Hounds have now reopened for eat-in meals so I went with my husband to celebrate my birthday. You can choose to sit indoors or outdoors, and we opted for indoors. The social distancing measures were very well thought out, for example - a one-way system, table service only and card payments only, hand sanitiser stations indoors and outdoors, staff wearing PPE, and well spaced out tables. The food and service were both fantastic and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

This meal was ordered during the lockdown phase of the pandemic, and so was via delivery. From start to finish the quality of service was outstanding. My elderly mother was, unti recently a wonderful home cook and her speciality was Roast Beef and Yorkshires, or rather, coming from Yorkshire, it had to be large Yorkshires with a thick authentic beef gravy, followed by the main of beef and roast potatoes with various vegetables. The Hare and Hounds weren't planning to have it on the menu today but agreed to cook it just for Mum as it was her 96th Birthday. The food was beatifully prepared and delivered bang on time.A great dining experience and they'll certainly be getting my custom in future. Highly Recommended.

The bar area is really nice, good atmosphere and comfortable, very friendly staff and a good drinks selection. It has a log burner and a good selection of seats. Good place to meet for a drink before dinner. It's unjustifiably expensive though - £5.90 for a pint of Thatchers Gold is absolutely ludicrous, especially for the outskirts of Newbury. The dining area is very nice, decent atmosphere. I've been a couple of times and on only one occasion the service was very slow despite it being half empty. The food is ultimately what lets it down though - the sharing platter is to be avoided, it's basic pub food and very averagely executed. Some of the food is amazing and some is pretty poor. For example in our desserts we had some cheesecakes which looked amazing, but the Baileys bread and butter pudding was just white bread with school custard on it. It's as if there are two different kitchens of vastly different effort, each serving half the menu. It's worth a visit, great potential, I just find it a bit hit and miss.

Ate here recently with my in-laws, the setting is nice but I thought the food was pretty bland. I also felt the portion size was pretty poor for what was charged for it. Most of the food was passable, with a couple of exceptions. Baked Camembert is difficult to get wrong but it was awful and the bread served with it....... well I’d expect some crusty rural slices or a bit of baguette, what we got was limp white sliced! Had the beef brisket which was unbelievably dry. I’d not go back.

Visited with a group of other mums for lunch along with our babies. I have to say I was disappointed in the facilities, especially the fact that all the high chairs we were provided with didn’t work properly and my baby was literally falling out of the bottom of hers. None of the straps were adjustable and the staff didn’t have any idea how they worked. I asked for an alternative and was offered a very old looking, dirty replacement which I didn’t feel comfortable using to feed my baby in. The whole trip was a challenge because I spent the whole time propping her up with my knees in her chairs. Please bear this in mind if you have a young baby, I would not recommend this restaurant! The staff should at least know how to operate the high chairs if they are being offered to customers.

We have been here before and enjoyed the food. This time, although nice it was not as good as usual. Pate starter was nice but Whitebait was over cooked. Main course, the fish pie was very tasty, however it was advertised as cod, salmon, prawn and scallop. Loads of salmon, some cod, but not a single prawn or scallop to be seen. Vegetarian quiche was also very tasty, but had a slightly soggy bottom. Not bad, but not up to the usual standard.

Sorry to write such a bad review but my husband and my meal was very poor. My husband had soup which was tasty but tepid, my pate was fine. It was the main course that was the real let dow. My chicken and asparagus pie had two tiny pieces of asparagus and chicken that was so over cooked I wasn’t even sure it was chicken. The whole thing was dry and I left most of it, there were vegetables but again very over cooked and tasteless. My husband had a curry that was very dry and looked as if it had been sitting under a warming light for a long time. On the plus side the waiting staff were very helpful and friendly.

I ate here on a Friday which features "steak night" so I decided to treat myself to a fillet, and ordered it cooked medium. A mistake. Most chefs recommend a minimum thickness for a fillet of 4 cm. Even allowing for shrinkage during cooking, mine can't have been much more than 2 cm, and unsurprisingly it was badly overcooked. Second attempt was slightly thicker, and was correctly cooked, but still not the treat I had hoped for. Given the prices, there's no excuse for serving such a small portion of beef.

I have visited The Barn on a few occasions, the only time I have had reason to be disappointed is when ordering steak, this was one of those times. I ordered medium rare and my husband ordered medium. Mine arrived medium and not very lean, it was not very enjoyable, and would have mentioned it to staff if they had come to our table to ask how our meals were, my husbands was very pink inside and although a cheaper steak was leaner and looked a lot nicer than mine. Having said all that the steaks were served on a narrow rectangular plate, leaving no room to cut the steak without fear of it ending up in someone's lap and nowhere to put the veg. I know on the evening I was not the only person on our table who would have appreciated a normal plate. The lobster and strawberry evenings they have are lovely, the restaurant area is so nice. I will go there again but have been put off the steak there.

Four of us went for a pre-theatre meal at about 6.00pm, having not been to The Hare and Hounds since the Barn was built. The barn has a really nice atmosphere, even though at that early time there were only about 4-5 tables occupied. I can imagine that its very cosy with the fire going in winter. There were also nice improvements to the bar area making it feel very convivial - and a good selection of gin, including a local one. We shared starters and 3 had the burgers - our veggie friend being well catered for too. At £10 for a large home made chargrilled burger with a pulled pork topping, generous chips and some coleslaw we thought this was great value and tasted lovely. Also having arrived at about 5.45 we had starters and mains and were out by 7.05 for the theatre so great service too. They certainly know how to run a good friendly bar and restaurant here. Its the sort of place that's great and affordable for a family supper or dinner with friends. As a pre-theatre meal venue (for the Watermill) its a lot nicer than the food there.

My husband and I had our wedding here in mid-August. From the start, Jonathan (the owner) was all over ever single detail of the wedding planning process, which was a real weight off our mind, as we felt confident that we were in capable hands. And boy did Jonathan and the team pull off an amazing day. Despite catering for almost 70 guests, the food came out promptly, was piping hot and absolutely delicious. All three courses were to die for (and not just because the Hare and Hounds allows you to choose the menu, two menus, in fact). The evening meal was so good, that one of my (slim!) bridesmaids later confessed to me that she'd eaten 5 pulled pork burgers. The service was impeccable and Jonathan made sure that all our guests were well looked after and enjoying themselves. All in all we had an absolutely fantastic, better than could be expected day, and Jonathan and the team at the Hare and Hounds were a huge part of achieving that. Couldn't recommend them highly enough.

Four of us stopped here for Sunday lunch on the way home to Chichester at the weekend. We arrived at midday & despite there only being a handful of people in the pub they claimed that all the tables were booked but managed to squeeze us in sitting us a table than wasn’t required until a bit later. Being Sunday meant of course that the obligatory roast was the main option although to be fair there were several other menu choices as well including fish pie, steak pie with chips & fish and chips. 3 of us chose roasts (2 turkey & 1 beef) & I elected to go for the steak pie with chips. Food wise we all enjoyed what we ate – healthy portions, lots of gravy with the roasts & a very succulent rich sauce with the pie – it really hit the spot after a few hours of driving and four hungry people. Service wise it was generally ok but the young waitress looking after us was maybe was a little over attentive & too keen (new?) asking whether we were enjoying the meal (just after our plates had just been put on the table) & did we want any deserts (only just having had the empty plates taken away – something I always dislike). But overall it was a very enjoyable lunch stop.

The website talks about fresh local produce which was what appealed to me. We arrived early for lunch on Bank Holiday Monday & the restaurant was empty. We all chose asparagus risotto as a main & I queried, laughingly, whether there'd be enough asparagus. The waitress assured me that there was, then came back shortly afterwards to say that they had run out of risotto - I'm not sure why they couldn't have cooked more - presumably there was no proper chef on! The 2 vegetarians in the party then had one option - a red pepper tart so we went for that - which was bland & uninspired - and the 3rd dish we chose was a fish pie. Both meals were mediocre - the fish pie came in a large high-sided china ramekin which was scalding hot and quite tricky to eat from - it was billed as containing scallops, cod or haddock and salmon but no scallops were present. We passed on dessert but even the coffee was disappointing. As for the disabled access, which obviously only affects a few, it wasn't easy getting in to the restaurant with my mother-in-law's wheelchair. We were offered a ramp but she didn't want the fuss so we bumped her down a couple of steps. I know this is an old pub which might be an excuse but a lot of money has obviously been spent recently on the Barn restaurant extension so it's a shame that disabled access wasn't given a higher priority. The ladies' toilets were up 4 stairs & the only disabled toilet facilities were 'across the courtyard' and it was offered that these could be opened up for us - again, really not disability-friendly.

We arrived and realised that a wedding was taking place, which would've been absolutely fine if most of the guests weren't stood around in the bar area....right next to where we had just been seated for dinner. It was so loud that we couldn't hear each other and it took forever to get our drinks ordered. Went in November, we sat it the beautiful Barn, lovely atmosphere and staff, food was ok but could be better. Ribs quite thin, and battered chicken had a little bit lack of flavour. It may be good to somebody's else liking, not really mine. However, I do recommend the place, I'll be coming back to try the sea bass

Me and my wife visited this place on new years day. They were serving the Sunday lunch menu. When we were taken into The Barn it was quiet as there was no background music on. 10 minutes later one of the waitresses put some on, which helped with the atmosphere of the room. I had a pork shoulder with chorizo and chive mash. It was very nice however there was no Chorizo which i was looking forward to. My wife had beef roast which was nice! Its a nice place with nice food and we will visit again. It's a nice place with nice food and we will visit again.

We booked a table for 15 people for Christmas lunch. Some of the party had opted for 2 courses and others for 3. We were served promptly and the staff were polite and helpful.

Visited with some family members for my father in laws birthday and would not return. The prawn cocktail was bland, the £13 for a sunday roast with dry meat, three types of vegetables you would not associate with a roast was terrible. We had 10 people in the group and two small serving dishes of vegetables to go around (roughly equating to one tablespoon of vegetables per person, we were told that was all we would get until we expressed our discontent with this and they then reluctantly brought out one more dish. The last killer for me was when i asked where the baby changing was located to be told in the ladies toilet, single fathers stay away it’s obviously only females that take out their babies! He had to open a hotel room for me to change my sons nappy. First and last visit by far.

Finally had a meal in the Barn, celebrating one of the children's birthday. A warm and cosy setting, very welcoming and friendly staff all evening. Excellent meals, comprising of burgers and steaks with fine Ale and Gins. A lovely touch adding a candle to the birthday girls pudding. A thoroughly enjoyable experience from beginning to end.

Visited recently for the first time and was impressed, no long queues after placing your order like in Costa etc, all staff are young and very helpful & pleasant. This is how a cafe should be run, Yesterday visited the Reading Cafe, same level of service received, we had to amend our order after sitting down, it was no problem for them at all and we were made to feel again nothing is too much trouble. Got home and looked into the Company, they focus on employing the right people & training them. Well done for doing this, your doing the right thing from the top down to the shop floor, If there’s a Boswells near me wherever I am that’s where I will be spending my money. 🙏😁

Excellent service from a very enthusiastic young man. Unfortunately several dishes were not up to the usual standard. The pork rib eye and beef feather were very good and presented well. The tandoori prawns on Naan bread were a poor substitute for the old garlic prawns and more reminiscent of a TV dinner. The chicken schnitzel presentation was poor. It came without the coronation mayonnaise and there could be more imagination with the salad which was just little gem cut up. Flavour, however, was good. The hot drink with small pudding was a winner as usual and delicious.

Have been a few times and it’s been nice but today it seems the owner was around for the first time that I’ve seen him. His attitude was something I can’t explain, rude to say the least! Comes across very intimidating and only seems to favour his regulars… after speaking to other regulars they all said he’s not been around for a while and that he likes to push his weight around when he’s on site. Definitely will not be going again. Shame really….. typical Irish

Stopped here as we were passing through the village. Had the small fish and chips and it was amazing and a good size portion. It was cooked fresh to order so was pipping hot, lovely crunchy batter and really tasty fish. The chips were perfect. Very clean place following covid guidelines. I wish I lived closer as I would 100% return.
