Fantastic location for a road trip in the area as it has ample parking, very attentive reception, special attention to Betrix and Turbo who helped me solve a problem with the rent a car. The hotel is older, but the rooms are spacious, with enough closets, good towels and breakfast

I had an extremely disappointing experience with The Chequers Hotel in Newbury. I accidentally booked a room for my daughter and realized the mistake almost immediately. Within an hour of the booking, I tried to cancel the reservation, but they flatly refused to provide any refund I’ve attempted to contact the hotel directly to resolve this issue, but their phone number seems to be disconnected. This lack of communication is highly suspicious and unprofessional. I can’t help but feel like this place is being run by conmen, taking advantage of their customers. I would strongly advise against booking with them. Their refusal to handle a simple request in a fair manner is appalling. Avoid at all costs!

Refuse to stay in any of the outside rooms I think they are all the 300's. You can hear anything and everything the neighbouring rooms do and the door for upstairs slams in the wind if the last one out dosent close it behind them. Ended up with a 6am wake up from next door despite my alarm set for 8. I cannot comment on the inner hotel rooms but bar had a nice vibe and the surrounding area was pleasant

Location was good, 1 minute walk into the centre of Newbury town.. Rooms were clean, but I didn't expect them to be in a different building.. Bathroom was new but shower decided it would go cold every few seconds.. Heating in the room was a disaster and can't be set from the room... Breakfast, was probably one of the worst I've ever had, we avoided it the second day, very little selection and walking across the busy corridor wasn't the best with a plate of food... Staff were very friendly, from reception staff to cleaners. We also had a mix up with the rooms and someone had signed for our room, when they checked out our room cards were then deactivated, not a big job to sort but just another issue that could have been avoided.. For the price I paid I would stay here again but would avoid the breakfast and request a room in the main hotel..

The hotel is very well located close to the centre of town but is far enough to be away from the hustle of the town. The room I was given was genuinely one of the most uncomfortable room I've stayed in. Very small, uncomfortable small single bed, cold and quite grubby in the bathroom. Service and staff were reasonable.

Service was very good. Staff were attentive and hospitable. I tried a main meal and dessert. Main meal was reasonably priced and delicious. Dessert was a tad expensive but good. Whilst the room I was put in was good. It was perhaps a little dated but clean. There were some major issues however. The first was plumbing - the bathroom sink spluttered when using it. The bath tap was so slow it took 40 minutes to fill the bath. And finally, when having a shower, it didn't maintain a stable temperature. The worst issue was the heating. It is controlled by the hotel, and was completely useless during a cold night. I woke up numerous times throughout the night and awoke feeling rather ill. Whilst I am not sure if this was a genuine issue with the plumbing or that the hotel was in cost-saving mode, it made my experience horrible. It is such a shame as everything else was perfect. But, hotels are there for sleeping. If you can't get that right then it becomes a poor hotel. A few days later I got the flu, and I think my stay at this hotel played a part in this. Also, I am not sure who chose to make the body gel, shampoo and conditioner lemon scent. It makes you smell like a toilet.

The staff were welcoming and friendly. Once checked in and bags in an adequate room (bathroom very much in need of a makeover) we called into the bar for happy hour. Could only use the benefit of happy hour if we signed up giving away all our contact details, which we decided not to do. Anyway, ordered our drinks wanting to charge to our room to be told payment was cash or card only!

I booked in and was greeted by a young man who took my details and gave me my key for the room, fanatical about football I asked if they had Sky only to be told "we aren't that advanced" no worries, eventually got to my room lugging my case and lap top bag through so many heavy fire doors it felt as though I was breathing through my nether regions! Because I still had project work to do so I went to the bar for a read and finish off some work, guess what? Empty but open, eventually a miserable young lady came in and I went to be served to a beer, with Smooth radio blaring out mush I engrossed myself in work, I decided, because I like pain and I would stay for another beer and guess what, yes you guessed she wasn't to be found, but then like waiting for a bus two arrive at the same time eventually! And you know what? This one was more miserable than the last one. Next day breakfast time, well this was a rating saver, the food was good except no choice of egg, scrambled or scrambled, the food whilst a buffet style was hot and fresh and the pigs pudding was moist and tasty, so congratulations to the breakfast team

I used to live in a condo complex that had a little shopping center across the street. In that shopping center there was a fairly mediocre Mexican restaurant that given the choice, would be a place I wouldn't eat at. Now given the fact that I was single and extremely lazy, when it came time to decide what to eat for dinner, and if, as it often happened, I had a craving for Mexican food, I was faced with two choices. The crap Mexican that is literally across the street that also happens to deliver or......the really amazing restaurant that is a 5 min drive away that doesn't deliver and I may or may not be under the influence of some sort of legally obtained intoxicant (God dammit I hate today's PC culture). In other words, proximity wins 9 times out of 10 and in my world, the Chequers is that Mexican restaurant across the street that I keep frequenting only because it caters to my laziness. Seriously though, I think the Chequers gets a bad rap. It's a budget friendly center of town hotel with a bar and a restaurant. What more could anyone want? Distance.

The hotel is located very near the centre of Newbury (which is well worth a visit). The interior of the hotel is being refurbished/redecorated and progress so far is good, smart and tasteful (although there is a little way to go before it is completed). The bathrooms are dated but spotlessly clean and functional. With one slight exception all the staff were excellent. When I arrived I found my room (101) was right at the front of the building near the road so I ask if there was any chance of a change. No quibble, I was offered a room (107) at the rear of the property, so good customer service. Room temperature was spot on. The bed was comfortable and I had a good night's sleep. Firstly, and this is not the hotels fault, Laterooms website contrived, once again, to book the wrong night so I have ended up paying for two nights. I felt a little aggrieved when the hotel then tried to charge me £92 for the same room that last night was £69. After a little discussion they conceded to charge me the same price. I bowled up, checked in, left my card open for my evening meal and drinks and retired. Arriving in the bar for dinner, imagine how surprised I was to find the kitchen closed for refurbishment. This stinks. The hotel had ample opportunity to warn me on Laterooms website, twice during phone calls and at the time I checked in!!! Not once did anyone bother. The only consolation is that I have just received a free sandwich :(.The room is poor, noise from the above room unbelievable and I would not recommend anyone stay here. £69 is excessive, £92 is outrageous.Ironically this review seems to be for the restaurant which I never saw. I have therefore rated the hotel as a whole.

To me, this is a complete LACK OF RESPECT FOR THEIR GUESTS. One night, this week, I was refulsed completelly. The other night, I was told "only bar food" was available. They also need to add waffles, pancakes, or French toast to their breakfast menu. The good part, is that whatever food they do serve, is very very good. I even asked the chef for his recipe. Also, the bathtub in my room is so narrow that you can't help but touching the (cold) shower curtain. They need to add the newer curved shower curtains, so you have room to breath, when taking a shower. The front desk staff was very helpful in arrangin my room and also getting me directions. This hotel is situated in the centre of Newbury. The cost for a double was about £90.00 per night, including breakfast. This was apparently a reasonable rate, given what can be charged. The hotel looked tired and, in most places it needs a lick of paint. There's no lift and finding rooms is a bit of a maze. Some of the floorboards seemed very unsafe under the carpet and seemed badly fixed. I couldnt see them, but I could feel the gaps and the movement! Some of the communal areas seemed reasonable and the receptionist was very helpful. She's wasted in this hotel. The hotel doesn't have WiFi in the rooms either, although I got a 'just about' connection via iCloud, although I am not sure how secure it was. There is, apparently, a better connection via iCloud in the common areas. My room was large and reasonably laid out, so it was satisfactory. The restaurant dinner menu was really poor, with limited vegetarian options, unless you like salad. Even the bar menu was hopeless for vegetarian options. I don't get it... when will hotels realise that meat and fish eaters will also eat vegetarian meals, if they are interesting and that they lose a lot of business from us veggies. I ate somewhere else. I wouldn't stay again either, so they lose my business in the future too.

Considering we were the only guests booked in to the restaurant as a party of 15, the customer service was virtually non existant. We arrived at the venue for 7.30pm, and seated at 8pm, it was only at that point that our menu choices were taken (3 courses & a glass of wine), we then had to wait nearly an hour before our starters arrived. Most of the guests gor bored and wandered off into the other room or outside. The food was very average for a hotel that the owners are trying to convey as top quality. There was no atmosphere in the restaurant at all, and no background music in the room. The evening was for a birthday party, but there was no ambiance to reflect this, except for our own amusements. I wouldn't recommend this place for a social gathering or a meal out, unless the service and food quality is increased.

The attention to detail was highly impressive and we both agreed, that this was by far the best meal we had enjoyed in a long time. The entire evening was extremely enjoyable and I can't wait to go back. Keep up the good work JP's and a big thankyou!

As a group of friends who dine out regularly and use the JP Bistro at the Chequers Hotel we cannot understand why it is not full. The Friday 3 course evening meal and glass of wine for £15 is excellent. We went to the preview dinner before the reopening of the bistro. It was a great evening out yet again . Home made bread, ham hock with apple & fennel sauce for my starter, very tender medium lamb with baby roast potaotes& carrots followed by a burnt orange pannecotta with strawberries. All the dishes had lovely flavours correctly balanced. The service was professional - attentive but not intrusive. The bisto has been refurbished and is crisply decorated as is the bar area. Do try it out.

A first visit - which will not be the last. We visited on a Sunday, and from the moment we arrived till the time left we felt welcomed. The food was so good, the service was fast and the staff attentive. The staff were a credit to this place. So often a venue will put a really nice looking picture of the food on the website, and so often it doesn't match - This was not the case at The Butt Inn

A really nice local pub - with plenty of good ales and beers on - lovely to sit in a great pub garden to enjoy a beer in the sun - great friendly service too 🍻🍷☀️😊😊

Excellent service from a very enthusiastic young man. Unfortunately several dishes were not up to the usual standard. The pork rib eye and beef feather were very good and presented well. The tandoori prawns on Naan bread were a poor substitute for the old garlic prawns and more reminiscent of a TV dinner. The chicken schnitzel presentation was poor. It came without the coronation mayonnaise and there could be more imagination with the salad which was just little gem cut up. Flavour, however, was good. The hot drink with small pudding was a winner as usual and delicious.

Have been a few times and it’s been nice but today it seems the owner was around for the first time that I’ve seen him. His attitude was something I can’t explain, rude to say the least! Comes across very intimidating and only seems to favour his regulars… after speaking to other regulars they all said he’s not been around for a while and that he likes to push his weight around when he’s on site. Definitely will not be going again. Shame really….. typical Irish

Visited recently for the first time and was impressed, no long queues after placing your order like in Costa etc, all staff are young and very helpful & pleasant. This is how a cafe should be run, Yesterday visited the Reading Cafe, same level of service received, we had to amend our order after sitting down, it was no problem for them at all and we were made to feel again nothing is too much trouble. Got home and looked into the Company, they focus on employing the right people & training them. Well done for doing this, your doing the right thing from the top down to the shop floor, If there’s a Boswells near me wherever I am that’s where I will be spending my money. 🙏😁
