We've called here for drinks, light snacks and lunch a few times now while we've been visiting family in the area. It's been lovely, the staff are nice and locals have been chatty and welcoming. We've had lunch which was really nice and reasonably priced. We have also called for drinks and had light food, which was on the starters menu. Absolutely can't fault it and quickly becoming a regular stop off on our way home to Bury. Definitely recommend.

Only about 20 people in at lunchtime but took 45 minutes to bring our meal. Staff never asked if the meal was ok as they seemed embarrassed about the answer they might get. Food average. Really wanted this place to succeed as we need new places to go to in the area.

The service in the pub was ridiculous. We were the only people in the pub so they weren't busy however we were only give 2 napkins for a family of 4 to start with. Then we had a problem with one of the meals and I'm guessing it was the manager who came out and said that this was how it was served, when asked if we could have a full steak they said no as they only serve it in slices, now I have never been anywhere that serves a steak in slices but when asked if we could have a full steak to be refused this is really baffling! Honestly what difference does it make to serve a full steak rather than have it cut up?. Then for 3 meals it cost nearly £70 it's unbelievable no wonder there was noone in there on a Saturday night.

We have been a few times since the pub changed hands. Food is excellent, freshly cooked and comes with good quality vegetables...as it is fresh, expect a little wait. Pudding choice is great too. Plus at the moment mulled wine is on offer...I didn't try it but may call back in just for a drink.

Hearing there was new management, we visited for Sunday dinner which was delicious. 2 of us had starters and both the ham hock terrine and the croquettes were lovely. On Sunday there's a limited menu of classics as well (nice when you don't want a dinner) but we all went for a roast. Beef, pork and chicken breast were all spot on (beef well done but still very nice) and the Yorkshire puddings, roasties and veg were faultless. In fact, the veg spring cabbage, leeks and petit pois) was so nice I even left a roastie so I could eat it all! Friendly staff and a reasonable price, I'll definitely be going back!

My wife and I, along with my mum went for lunch on Friday 30th December and we were delighted by the fantastic service and absolutely beautiful food. The host was just fantastic and took a reasonably busy place in her stride. On leaving we were informed that she and her family will be leaving the premises and moving on, they will be one very difficult act to follow. I hope that their future prospects are successful and that there replacement can keep it going.

We called in this evening for a few drinks in the sun and we were very impressed with the lady behind the bar, she was very pleasant with a good sense humour, but I can imagine that she gets a lot of people thinking the wrong way about her as she is very heavily tattooed but she has opened my eyes regarding that stigma surrounding ink on ladies, and I admire her attitude, she wears her ink with pride and isn't ashamed of her look, you could tell just by watching her and the way she was with the regular drinkers in there, that she is a well respected and liked person., and the people in there don't see her tattoos, they see her and only her,..she has banter to match even the wittiest of people, and can adjust her attitude to any age or gender.... You can really tell the old guys that were in this evening like her, and after talking to her, we found out that she suffered from anxiety and since working there she has come out the other end of the dark tunnel that brings. After talking to her, and having a good laugh at her ways, she certainly has a way of cheering people up. We would definitely recommend this place whether it be for a bite to eat or just a drink, you won't be disappointed. We were told that the manager that is in there now is leaving in the next couple of weeks and we really hope that whoever takes it over has the sense to keep this young lady on, the regulars like her and she makes you feel welcome as soon as you walk through the door...

Cannot comment on the food itself as we waited so long that we had to leave without eating. Were told food would be up to half an hour so that was fine but after 50 minutes asked how much longer as my daughter had a train to catch and was told it would be 5 mins as was just finishing our order, I said would it really be as if not we would have to leave but was assured 5 minutes. 10 minutes later still no food so had to request a refund and was asked what had we had!! Not enough staff obviously. Four people at next table ate and then ordered desserts which came well after we had ordered. Might be nice to eat lunch there if you have 2 hours, definitely not a place to go for lunch if you have to get back to work or catch a train to London within 2 1/2 hours!

We used to love this place and been several times since the new owners took over .. BUT … there are several things about the pub/restaurant that is beginning to niggle me.. There is a sign outside and several A4 signs stuck on the doors saying "SUNDAY LUNCH - 3 COURSE SET MENU £9.95" .. When my daughter ordered this, she was told it was not £9.95 as advertised, but £12.50 (isn't that illegal) ? .. When my daughter pointed out it said £9.95 on the board outside, she was told the pub was waiting for "them" to come and change it, but the £9.95 sign had been there for at least two months since the change to £12.50.. and there was still the A4 pieces of paper sellotaped to the doors with £9.95 still on them.. A very poor show indeed and does make you wonder - If they are slap-dash with their advertising, what else are they slap-dash at.

Went with daughter, grandson and husband for a meal. Ordered the deal of fish and chips for two and my daughter wanted chilli con carne burger which was on the menu as Wicked burger. The waitress who was so unfriendly it was unbelievable came some time later to say that they had no rice left (would you believe) and it would have to be chips which my daughter did not want. Turns out they had put down chilli con carne meal not burger. The girl was adamant my husband had asked for this and I then asked could she not change to the burger now seeing as how they had no rice. She was really rude and said she would ask to ask chef and walked away. When the meal came it was terrible over cooked chips turned dark brown, small bowl of chilli con carne and that was it. Our fish and chips were fine but far too many of the overcooked chips. Our little boy of 2 was presented with a huge plate of chips and chicken pieces and as the forks and knives on the table were huge, elaborately etched ones we asked for a smaller set and she said they had none. So he had to eat with his fingers. The new landlady is unfriendly too, this is our third visit since she took over and the other two times the staff were ok but we won't be going again.

Group of 4 - I went for the Hunter's chicken which was fine. However, my parents ordered 'roast meals' from the OAP menu and got less than my 2 year old who had a meal from the kids menu. The place was freezing so we moved next to the fire which was barely on. We asked the waitress if we would put some logs on and she said she would have to ask somebody and never came back. The meat on the roast dinners was not carved from a joint, more like pre-packed luncheon meat that tasted really bad. We'll be back at the Pear Tree for out next outing.

Called in for a late lunch yesterday (Sat 4 th Nov) with my Mum, husband & son as we'd tried to eat at the Miller & Carter down the road & had got fed up of waiting for a table. Got a warm welcome at the bar, very pleasant lady took our order, found the pub & toilets clean, the menu was more varied than we expected. There was an extensive range of traditional pub food, 2 of us had the cheese burger which came with salad & skinny fries, 1 had gammon, egg, onion rings, salad & chunky fries & I had giant Yorkshire pudding with 2 types of meat (pork & turkey, could have had beef as well) mash, little boiled potatoes, carrots, broccoli & cauliflower & gravy. All the food was hot & filling, just what we needed, we all enjoyed our food & felt full up. We would definitely visit again for a casual meal, it's not really the sort of place for a posh meal or celebration but for an every day meal it was great. They also seemed to do senior citizens portions for reasonable prices. Overall a nice place to eat.

2 regulars took 2 guests for lunch ,we were the guests. Friendly welcome. Minor requested adjustments to the main course dishes were met. Strange that the menu just said white fish without identifying the type . Beef stroganoff was served pre plated with rice, potatoes and over cooked cauliflower and broccoli...strange combination. Roast of the day was served within a giant Yorkshire pudding with the meat being ,,,well .brown and the gravy obviously turning the pud base into a soggy gloop.

We had heard fabulous things of The White Gate, especially the cafe. I decided to treat my Mum and take her there for lunch. My Mum uses a walker to assist her and is not very mobile. When we went in we had to walk right around the shop to get to the cafe, my Mum did ask which was the easiest way to the cafe and, bearing in mind she was using her walking frame, was directed to an entrance with steps!! With the help of other members of the public we got her down the steps to then find there is a ramped walkway, but we weren't told this and there is no signage. The cafe was extremely busy, the staff were pleasant and the food was okay, hot and fresh. The tables however are crammed in and again we had problems getting seated because of Mums mobility and again it was members of the public that assisted us rather than staff. I personally wouldn't visit again, we went on what we thought would be a quieter day but it was overcrowded and stressful. It is definitely not user friendly for disabled or those with poor mobility.

We happened upon the White Gate on a night out treat. we had tried to get a table at two other restaurants but being 'pay day' weekend we were out of luck (or so we thought). Heading back towards home in the dark and rain we saw the 'Food served here' sign and decided a pub meal would be better than no meal. The empty car park gave no warning of the lovely warm welcome we were to receive! With plenty of choice from the pub food menu we soon made our choices and in a reasonable amount of time some lovely 'grub' appeared. It tasted as good as it looked; staff were attentive but not overly and other diners, though few, seemed very happy with their experience. We will certainly visit again probably to try something off the Sunday lunch menu. It;s a shame it was so quiet as people are missing out on a little gem!

We were hungry, so called in here for a beer and some food.We had a choice of two real ales, so opted for the bitter and a blonde. The barmaid was friendly and we were soon seated at a table by a window and next to a real fire. The pub has some interesting lighting features in what appears to be chandeliers, but on closer inspection turns out to be inverted wine glasses. Very clever. We opted for Chicken Caesar Salad and the Steak Pie and chips with peas. Nothing too fancy, but it was very tasty and well cooked. The service was efficient. We would come here again.

My daughter worked here a good number of years ago and food was lovely, but I haven't been in a while, it was Hobson Choice tonight but I thought they always did a nice steak so we gave it a go. Won't be returning staff friendly and pub clean and tidy, food not so much. Garlic mushrooms starter very nice except the Garlic bread was undercooked, my friends Calamari was in bread crumbs deep fat fried, very hard to cut. We both ordered steak and was surprised not to see rump, sirloin or ribeye on the menu, it was just described as prime steak, very accommodating when it came to asking for veg not Chips, one steak ordered medium, one rare. On being served the steaks there were plenty of potatoes and veg on the plates, mushrooms were nice onion rings again deep fat fried couldn't even cut them with a steak knife, garden peas like bullets and then the steak not nice at all, the rare had never seen rare more like medium, very fatty and hard to cut and quite tasteless. The Medium one was more like well done and again very hard to cut and tasteless. No one came during the meal to ask if it was ok and we were sat quite a while before they cleared the plates (that may have been because they thought we hadn't finished as we both left half the steak and onion rings and veg on the plates) when they did clear we were asked if it was ok and we said no and told them about the steaks. The cook offered there apologies and we were asked if we would like a free dessert or drink, we opted for a pot of tea for 2. Won't be returning even if it was only £36 for both meals, have paid same in other pubs and enjoyed it so much better. Very disappointed.

Went as we were advised that the was a nice new menu and was ment to be really nice. We had not been for a year so thought we would try it out. Food was ok. Looked like the place had had a bit of a revamp but not much of one tbh. Id go for a pint after work but as gor a meal.... think id go elsewhere tbh.

We have been here several times for drinks and have enjoyed the comfy atmosphere however we went for Sunday lunch and were not so impressed. They do a 3 course set menu for £9.95, so fair enough it's not going to be great food but it wasn't too bad, I had the garlic mushrooms to start and the portion was huge--- I only ate half, the beef was quite nice with veg and Yorkshire pudding , and the pudding was very nice I had chocolate fudge cake with cream, our problem was the slow service, maybe they were short staffed as the staff that were working did their best to keep things moving. I would call here again for drinks but not sure about having food .

Family meal. More bar staff needed and some did appear somewhat stressed. I ordered the rack of ribs, they tasted lovely but were no where near hot enough. Good JD sauce. The corn on the cobs were inedible, boiled within in an inch! My husband enjoyed his beef burger, but overall, for the price of food, it’s nothing special. Most of the party were just ‘erm, it was okay’. Good price on a bottle of red wine and the food came out as we ordered, we they wanted us to pay at the bar due to party size. Main male staff member greeting as we walked in was friendly.

We were so looking forward to our romantic valentine's evening. Sadly the previous reviewer has said most of it for us. Extortionately expensive, to be honest, for actually a less than mediocre meal which was not particularly enjoyable. It was obvious, from the occasional groans, the that something was very very wrong in the kitchen, even though front of house staff attemped to cover the cracks with gracious service. Also, yes it was far too cold. Have had lunch several times in this beautiful building, which have been very pleasant, although they really do need to sort out the heating problem.

After a bracing walk around part of Digley Dam this was an ideal stop off to satisfy healthy appetites. It wasn't particularly busy so my friend and I were fortunate to select a table by the window to sample views of the surrounding countryside that the area is famous for. We both chose the regular Fish & Chips, good value at £12 though smaller portions are available at £9.50. My friend's Side Salad cost £4 which I thought expensive for what he received while a side order of Mushy Peas set him back £2. I thought the drinks were expensively priced, £2.90.for a pint of Fanta Orange but we'd visited for the Fish & Chips and these were delicious so it was definitely worth the effort. The menu is quite extensive so there are plenty of alternatives to satisfy most appetites and palates. A good experience.

We didn’t have much time so rather than go ti RMT Kitchen where our friends said parking is a nightmare, they suggested we hit Toby. We were seated and drink orders were taken and then nothing more happened so eventually I went over to a waitress and ordered the Ultimate Roast Dinner Sandwich for our son (just some carvery stuff in a roll or pud basically), and carvery for the two of us. We went to get it, meat was cold as well as most of the veg, and the sandwich never came. After about 20 minutes we asked for it and it had obviously been forgotten so she rushed off and got us an Ultimate Roast Beef Sandwich which is just some beef and gravy slapped on a roll. Honest misunderstanding so no big deal. We asked for a replacement, she took away the tray, manager showed to to ask about our issue, both said it would be sorted, again nothing for another 20 minutes, and we had to ask yet one more time to get a sandwich that was sloppy, but too hot to touch, and a bowl of cold gravy. Desert was fine, but the custard with the apple pie was again a tongue burner (nuked maybe?). When time to pay came, none of this had apparently discouraged the waitress from asking for a tip. She was lucky we were leaving that day and there to burn off no longer needed GBP so she got wholly underserved 6 quid for her efforts. Overall we lost more time waiting than it would have taken us as per our friends to find parking near RMT Kitchen, and the food was absolutely not worth it.
