The White Cross Inn in Bexley

On recommendation we visited The White Cross for Sunday lunch with friends. The food all round was delicious. The atmosphere, service and overall experience was great. Forgive me if I comment on three most recent negative reviews - Have they made a mistake with the venue?

I’ll start by saying that the food here is very good indeed - I have eaten in high end London restaurants where the food is not as good as this! The issue with the White Cross is that it is not particularly friendly or welcoming. If only the staff were more friendly this would be a 5/5 without a doubt

Rude, miserable staff and a stale atmosphere. Was made to feel unwelcome from the moment I walked in. Wouldn't recommend at all, especially for people of colour. Save your time and money and go to The Albany instead! Much better atmosphere and nice staff.

Awful place, I wouldn’t advise anybody to go here. They are racist, rude and obnoxious.

If I could give O stars, I would. Attended as a group of around 8 with a new born baby and some toddlers. The atmosphere was very cold and intense as soon as we walked in. Most of the group were Caucasian and also consisted of 3 mixed race people and myself an African Woman. There were also mixed race children. Upon entering I felt as though all eyes were on me as if I was an alien and this was confirmed by others in the group who experienced the same. There was only about 6 people in the pub and when trying to put chairs together so that we could all sit together, we were shouted at across the bar and told that for groups of over 6 people we had to book online. The pub was half empty and a very rainy day and one round of drinks for all of us would have probably been £100 and as it was a birthday meet up, we would have purchased several. The pub is in the middle of nowhere and on a rainy day they decided to treat us with hostility and not feel welcome at all. Thankfully an elderly couple offered us their table as it was larger than the one we had acquired. I then went up to the bar to get a round of drinks and the price of the drinks had been changed a couple of times. I repeated the total to the bartender and was greeted with a face of disgust. Staff continued to treat our group as not welcomed and unfortunately I cannot believe I have contributed financially to such an awful establishment. The rest of the group also felt the same and did not have pleasant encounters with staff. I felt stereotyped and a victim of racism in 2024! I was not the only one who experienced this and my mixed race friends and also Caucasian friends immediately noticed this so it is not an isolated incident. Children were with us and to be treated like this with them present is absolutely abhorrent. It can only make me wonder if it would have been worse if it was just us adults. To be made to feel that you are not welcome or seen lesser than just because the colour of your skin is absolutely vile. I hope you continue this behaviour and lose business as there is no place for racists in society. To be made to feel unwelcome in a pub just on the outskirts of London as a British born individual who is also a Nurse and contributes to society by helping saving lives on a daily basis is disgusting. I am glad that my Caucasian friends absolutely noticed this straight away and suggested we left immediately. We would have rather walked in the stormy rain with no umbrellas than spend a second longer in that establishment. To behave like this in 2024 is absolutely revolting when we all bleed the same. The elderly couple who kindly offered us their table had seen the look of disappointment on our face and asked us not too leave. To treat an individual differently due to their skin colour which they cannot change is very vile. I hope and pray no one has to experience this ever again in this establishment.

Very disappointed with the experience I had here. Seems a lot of people feel the same judging by all the poor reviews. I would really watch how customers are being treated. 2025 will be a tough year for all businesses and all busines coming through your door should be welcomed. Please remember there are plenty of pubs out there and if you don't want our business well that's fine, we won't be back and word of mouth also travels far. 1. Please invest in customer service training 2. Please establish correct pricing structure as I'm not the only one on here experiencing the same issues. How hard is it just to get a pricelist together for customers so that they can know what they are paying for instead of staff looking upset when corrected on their mistakes. 3. I would respond to your customers on Google reviews and at the very least apologie for the experience they have encountered when visiting your establishment.Not responding reflects very badly on you as a business and shows you are not in touch with modern day society where unfortunately Google reviews go a long way.

They were so rude, hostile, racist and we didn’t feel welcome there. They didn’t even wanted to serve us like if we don’t had the money to buy they overpriced drinks. Horrendous experience tbh, I wouldn’t ever recommend there.

The food is actually great for such a local pub. The outside area is really nice and new.

Visited here after going pumpkin picking, what a little Gem, Great food large portions Proper Pub Grub and wide range to choose from. Staff were friendly and very helpful we will be back very soon ... Recommend the Ham Egg and Chips Lovely!!!!!

This is a lovely pub with a nice size car park. We all had the Sunday multi roast dinner, which was very tasty and would certainly recommend. Cider wise, we have Inch's on tap. They had live music, who was very good and fitted in very well, playing great music which wasn't too loud, so that you could have a conversation.The staff are friendly and helpful. All in all, it's a nice, decent pub. Would happily visit again.

Lovely old style pub, no TVs, no slot machines just a friendly welcome oh and the food is good too.

Took mum here today for her birthday and we as a group of 11 had nothing but good things to say. Food was amazing. Good value for money, service was impeccable and atmosphere was great too. We will most certainly be returning.

Went for Sunday lunch yesterday with family and friends and the food was the best I’ve eaten in years! I had the pork belly which was just perfect! Juicy pork with fantastic crackling. Very good value for money!

Rapidly becoming pub of choice. Had my husbands wake there, brilliant and now planning my 80th birthday meal. Please give it a try, you won't be disappointed.

First visit to this pub so cannot compare to what it was like previously but it looks recently renovated and staff friendly with food drink at good prices, the food is superb, far exceeding expectations. Will absolutely return here if in the area

First time visit here, very impressed. Had the cheese burger, halloumi hummus wrap and ploughmans, food portions very generous, fair prices and taste delicious. Will visit here again

A hidden gem. If you get the mixed hanging skewers you had better be very hungry. They were huge.

Fantastic pub and food, heartily recommend

We visited the White Cross on a midweek lunchtime. Nice food at sensible prices, good selection of beers. The main menu is slightly limited but this is nicely off set by the daily specials available. The garden area has been recently renovated to a good standard. I believe the pub is under new management, if so they deserve to do well.

Well what can I say? a breath of fresh air and somewhere for the local community and beyond to meet, enjoy, socialise. Its so important to keep our communities going and this pub has been upgraded to a high standard. Fantastic management team and staff, great atmosphere, lovely outside area, great choice of food for all. Doggies allowed (very important) but mostly I cannot stress how important it is to have this great pub where you can meet, socialise, have a few drinks and feel part of the community which is now sadly so often lost. The Sunday singers are great, a must for any Sunday lunch!

Full five star across the board, fresh, clean and trendy decor. The food is AMAZING! Absolutely 💯

Didn't live up to expectations, it was a very average Sunday meal and probably somewhere we won't go back to. One little yorkshire seemed particularly mean although the vegetable were fresh (big tick). Please don't have the 'nut roast' if you are veggie, it consisted of mainly rice and chopped vegetables placed in a mould and turned out, I think the nuts had had a day off, it was bland and uninspiring. Dessert menu was very limited to four things although these were much tastier. Shame about the overall experience.

Wish it was busier a cracking little pub with great food and singer on Sundays. Not forgetting curry and steak nights

Whilst I’m sure this place is very good- has a lovely outdoor area and nice atmosphere on the inside- what let’s it down unfortunately is to turn up on a Sunday and be told for food it is bookings only. Can appreciate that whilst roasts may need to be reserved surely you can do a smaller menu that can help cater for the outdoor area and walk ins. Or at the very least tell people on your website that reservations are essential. So nothing against the quality or service here- but think communication or ability to cater for people needs to improve.

Good home cooked food at very reasonable price.

First visit since new owners and we were not disappointed. Great menu which suited everyone and very reasonably priced. Lovely friendly and helpful staff. Clean and tidy comfortable environment. Not rushed at all. Ladies that do lunch now plan to do dinner next month. Will be telling my Slimming World group too as jacket potatoes were delicious.

This venue has had a thorough upgrade by the new owner. A good and well priced venue to meet friends for lunch.

Did the curry night. Very very nice and filling. Definitely worth the money. Staff are friendly, dogs welcome. Unfortunately when we got seated there was an elderly gentleman that was coughing like he was going to die but that can't be helped. Lovely place, looking forward to visiting in the summer.

Good food and fast freindly service

Had a wonderful meal on Saturday evening. Hanging skewers of lamb and chicken with Mediterranean salads, hummus and dressings. Great atmosphere, friendly staff and clients and very dog friendly. On a trip but will deffo be back.

We had a lovely warm welcome today, my uncle is in a large electric wheelchair, chairs were moved and we had the choice of tables that were most suitable for him. The food was lovely and fresh. We were offered help if we needed it. Would highly recommend this lovely refurbished pub. Thank you for making us so welcome.

Had an enjoyable few beers on a Saturday afternoon here. First time visit but will go again. Some good beers on tap. Reasonable prices. Staff were attentive and has a lovely outdoor area that looks good for the summer. Food looked really good so will have to try next time. Only downside is entrance a bit awkward if you haven't been before. Defo worth a try

Visited here twice now and it's just gorgeous! Yesterday, we called in at midday on the off chance that they had a table for us to have an early Sunday lunch and the staff were accommodating and fitted us in. Food was gorgeous. Great portions and good price! Will visit again, for sure.

Fantastic value. I'm a big lad, and there was more on my plate than I could handle! Food tasted AMAZING, and the staff were really lovely, even when another customer doubletheir work, they were still friendly and professional, apologising for any hold ups we may have experienced. I thoroughly recommend the White Cross to EVERYONE, we will certainly be returning 😀

Visited this pub many years ago, was very dark and drab. This is my first visit since new owners have taken it over. They have spent a lot of money on it and it looks lovely, very welcoming. The meals are absolutely fulfilling, very nice choice. Will definitely be going back for another visit. Definitely deserves a 5* rating There is also nice areas outside to sit in the better weather, also outside patio heaters.

Fantastic place with superb food and service with a lovely welcoming feel from the managers and all staff. Would highly recommend a visit. The landlords Mark and Karen can do enough to make you feel welcome and comfortable.

Did not have food, but will definitely be going back and hopefully next time we will try the food. It is a lovely pub with new renovations and the outside area is amazing for the summer time

Absolutely loved our lunch. Nothing pretentious. Just great pub grub. The ham and cheese melt was delicious, with cheese and red onion on top, which was a nice touch, and one I will be stealing for my next sandwich at home! Service was quick, and friendly. A great place for a quick lunch!

Really nice food and staff. Portion sizes were big so good value for money. Naomi said they have good chicken nuggets. Evie said the staff were very kind and friendly.

Nice pub with outside garden but dogs not allowed in the nice bit of garden, which is such a shame.

Three of us sat down for steak night and had two 40oz Tomahawk steaks with 3x chips 3x side 3x sauce each. When the food was brought to the table we couldn't believe how well it was presented and also how much food there was! It was all cooked to perfection and the chef Orlando did an amazing job even going the extra mile to create his own sauces which really were delicious. We agreed it was probably one of the best steaks we’ve had! Thanks to Mark and Karen for doing an amazing job as always too. Highly recommend White Cross Inn.

Was recommended The White Cross and it didn’t disappoint. Sunday roast was absolutely delicious. Booked a large table in advance and the lady was very helpful throughout. Food and service spot on with the singer being an added bonus. Highly recommend and will definitely return.

Under new management and a group of 15 had Sunday roast. Portions were massive and delicious Nobody could fault anything with the food and almost every plate was emptied! Book early and you will not be disappointed

Forgot to add to my review my partner asked for a sausage for our dog & was told abruptly that we'd have to pay for it, we didnt expect it for free but £4.50 for one sausage was a liberty

Just finished a meal of mixed meat roast, my wife had beef roast. Excellent meal, plenty on the plate, cooked to perfection. Certainly busy for a Sunday afternoon/evening but you can see why. Guvnor and staff very friendly and helpful. A good local pub with great food. Will definitely come back.

Second time since new management Food was adequate. Landlady looks like she couldn't be bothered & no atmosphere. Sorry to say wont be returning

Absolutely love this pub. We were lucky enough to see the renovations from start to finish and have got to know the management team really well over the past few months. The staff are so friendly and welcoming and cater for everyone, super dog friendly. Amazing selection of draught beers and a fantastic menu including BBQ food. Plenty of tables inside the restaurant and undercover tables outside. Just perfect for all occasions!!😋

10 of us went for Sunday Lunch and I can honestly say it was the best Sunday lunch I have had out ever. All ten meals served promptly &piping hot . Absolutely would recommend it.

The first time visiting this pub since change of management and refurbishment. We visited for Sunday lunch that was plentiful with well cooked food and tender meats. All in all Impressed and will visit again during the week for there normal menu.

Since the pub has been taken over, it’s cosy with lovely decor, spacious outside area with canopy’s. We’ve eaten here three times, enjoyed all the meals we’ve had.Staff are lovely and friendly, would definitely recommend.

The pub has been refurbished and i think under new management! What a refreshing experience it has given it! I used to go this pub a lot, but stopped as it really just got stale and the staff seemed to not care anymore as well as the beers on tap were often off. Now, its refreshing, staff amazing, great food and great selection on tap! Great work!

Had meal in white cross very good new owners very welcoming the pub has been refurbished and is now looking good there could be more variety on the menu ie salad or chicken breast all in all the food served is very good would recommend lots of parking and dog friendly

Pub has been refurbished and is much improved. Good food, good service and retains the 'pub' atmosphere. Car park has changed so there is only one way in/out which can be tricky and they separate 'drink' and 'food' so we ended with 2 payments which seems silly. Perfectly good place for a nice good value lunch.
