We were a party of 24 for a family celebration. Everything was great from start to finish. Fantastic and polite service, food was great. Everyone attending will go back, worth a visit, especially for Sunday Roast.

I used to work at the White Bear over winters and full time during summers between university years, 2017-2019. The pub has gone through a massive renovation since then. Its amazing to see what more could be done with it whilst still keeping its character of an old traditional English pub. Most notable about my return visit was the food... WOW! What an upgrade. I always enjoyed the food before the renovation but its gone to a new level now. Loved it. We ate on a Sunday afternoon, so there were roasts all around the table. Sides also, I would highly recommend the cauliflower cheese if choosing a roast. Beef roast and a delicious yorkshire pudding - 10/10. The puddings were also delicious. We just managed to squeeze in a few by sharing after the large main meals! The staff were very friendly, helpful and quick on their feet (almost as good as I was! ;) Can't wait to go back for another visit and try one of the new choices on the menu + enjoy a beer at the bar!

We had a fabulous meal at The White Bear today. Adam, the new manager from last week, made us feel very welcome. Jay was friendly and helpful at our table. The food came up, I had a Steak & Ale pie, mash, carrots and tenderstem broccoli, I can’t recommend it enough. It was homemade, the steak was excellent quality together with the pastry was absolutely delicious. My hubby had Chicken Supreme with a toulouse sausage, potatoes, tomatoes and butter bean stew. He was equally in raptures over his meal. We finished it up with the Pecan Pie and a special vanilla ice cream. Once again a really delicious dessert. The decor is fresh with the original side of the pub together with a new extended side leading out to the garden. If you are looking for a quality meal in a lovely relaxing setting you will love it here. Best to book to avoid disappointment.

Lovely meal at the new White Bear in Fickleshole yesterday. Lovely service without being too pushy, delightful in fact. The two dishes were produced relatively quickly and tasted just fine. Many quiet areas and a large funky area! A very old pub with a recent £3m refurbish! Great

Delicious food and friendly staff. Food came out quickly and was very tasty. We started with the rosemary sourdough then had the butternut squash rissoto and burger. We finished with pecan pie and a key lime pie. I would recommend every dish. The nicest pub meal we have had in a long time.

Hadn't been to the White Bear in a long time and decided to take the family for my birthday. There is excellent parking and the outside area is open and relaxed. The interior is wonderfully cosy. The food does take a while but it is worth the wait. I had the trio roast which was perfect, even the veg. My daughter had the fish n chips which was light and perfectly cooked. The only negative was the flies in the restaurant brought in by the rear folding doors. Not a great deal they can do about that. Will definitely visit again in winter

This country pub came recommended and I would have given 4 or 5 stars if it wasn’t for the flies. Food was really good, service with a smile albeit was a little slow from ordering to receiving. Atmosphere was good. A little loud for us but was soon accommodated in a quieter area which was really nice. Overall a good experience but really need to do something about the flies.

I went to lunch with 6 friends our table was booked at 3pm we had to leave the table by 6, our food arrived at 5:30, the wait was so long, we wasn’t asked to leave to table thank god, but the wait was a joke it was busy but they seem to have a lot of staff walking around but not doing much, the staff need more training all very polite and friendly but not well trained, The food is average I had a beef roast, 1 carrot 1 parsnip a small amount of leaks 3 peas poor, potatoes tasted old, key lime pie was nice but tasted like lemon meringue pie, my friend ordered chicken Caesar salad and I came with egg that wasn’t on the menu she hates eggs, we asked the young lad to clear out table he removed 2 full wine glasses but not our dinner plates, the waitress did replace our wine. I’ve been going to the white bear since I was a young girl and never had a bad experience such a shame, I will return for a second chance and hopefully things might change.

The new decor and garden are amazing. Much lighter and brighter than the old pub. It had a really lovely feel to it but let down by service from the kitchen. Sadly the food took so long to arrive. We had a table booked for 7.15 and did not get our main courses until nearly 9.15pm. The waitresses were lovely but they needed to be more proactive in telling customers that their food was going to take so long. One told us that the computer booking system does not limit the numbers of covers being booked at the same time. This meant that the kitchen staff, a sous chef and an agency chef were completely overwhelmed with the numbers to cook for. This really needs sorting out as we were a party of eleven who go out most Fridays and we won’t be going there again. Food was mainly good but lambs dish was totally overcooked and had to be sent back.

We’ve visited The White Bear twice now in the last couple of months. We used to go there a bit before they closed and refurbished. It’s a really nice Pub with lovely views and a good selection of beers, wines and cocktails. The food is also really nice, the presentation of the food is fantastic and they have a good choice. I’ve had the Mussels and chicken wings for starters, both nice and tasty. My wife had the Cauliflower wings for starter and enjoyed them. We had a selection of mains. I’ve had the sirloin steak and the lamb, both were nice but the lamb was the best. My wife had the fish pie and really loved it, lots of fish and very tasty. There is indoor and outdoor seating if you want and have kids who need to run around a bit. Plenty of parking too. All in all a nice restaurant with a nice atmosphere. Definately will be back again soon.

It was our first visit to the White Bear (family of 4), we had driven past it many times & it looked a lovely place. Having booked a table to eat there I regret not driving past one more time. The starters and one of the mains (Wagu Burger) were ok, but the rest of the food was very poor, the mussels were small & gritty, the grilled flatbread was too tough to get a knife through and the fisherman’s pie was just awful, there was no fish in it, 99% cheesy mash. The menu claimed it would come with salmon, king prawns, cod, smoked haddock, lobster bisque & pan-seared scallop. There was one scallop on top of the mash, but nothing else that the menu promised. I complained when the table was cleared (approx one hour after we had given up on our food). The Manager was a lovely guy & very understanding, he took money off the bill for the poor food. Overall we were very disappointed, its not good when you have to stop at a takeaway on your way home from a meal because you are still hungry.

Firstly a gorgeous looking establishment , everything you want to see from a Country pub and was pleasantly surprised at the standard of refurbishment. We booked for Sunday lunch for 4 and was really looking forward to it. Our server was young and frankly miserable. I'm not sure if she is new, inexperienced or just not a people person but we never once experienced a smile. Drinks took forever to arrive but we're all in a good mood and looking forward to lunch. Lunch came, the wrong plates given to 2 of our guests, who had to swap after they realised they both had each other's lunch. The food was served and the waiters disappeared, no offer of any condiments, so had to seek service and wait around 5 minutes for a blob of English mustard and was told they had run out of apple sauce....it was 1.30pm. The extra order of roast potatoes never arrived which were very much needed as only 3 potatoes per plate and at £22.95 was disappointing. When we pointed out that we had not received the potatoes, the server was quick to defend herself by saying she had requested them. No apology, no would you still like them, nothing! We had to again ask where our second drinks order was, which we could see was sitting at the bar awaiting collection. Truly disappointing, not what we were expecting or have experienced before, if this is what refurbished looks like, then bring back the old staff who always greeted you with a smile, made polite conversation and made you feel very welcome, none of which we experienced today. As we were leaving there is a hand written sign tempting you to try a steak... Look at the spelling mistakes, at least we left laughing. Not sure we'll be back....

Although we were initially welcomed by our waiter he quickly became inattentive ingnoring our request for a spoon so that we could serve the side dish. We weren't offered condiments with our roasts either and the oddest thing was the sliced beetroot served along side our roast dinners, what was the chef thinking?! However, the quality of food was good and the pecan pie was lovely (but please leave the micro salad off my pudding). My partner enjoyed his paella and the building was very historic dating back to the 16th century.

Environment, staff, service generally very good. A Friday night visit, first time for several years and restaurant was quite busy so a few small waits for drinks and one member of our group's main course. The little "but" in the review title is for comments about two of the main courses. The tomato -chorizo sauce was in the oinion of both diners too intense, even for one of them who is a tomato freak. My paella was tasty and well cooked but the long strips of red pepper and onion, slippery with paella "sauce" did not want to stay on my fork and made eating a bit of a messy experience. Chicken piri piri was v. good. We will return . Special thanks to Emily for service and smiles

Plenty of parking and outdoor space which I’m sure will be very busy when the weather is nice. Service was excellent and the food absolutely delicious. 3 had roast pork, 2 the beef, 1 chicken and another had the wagu burger. Wish I had taken photos! Heard it had been refurbished so thought we would give it a go. It has been extensively reconfigured inside and is a big improvement and includes the outside area. Dining area's are good (a little chilly) but comfortable and plenty of cosy corners and easy on the eye decor. Service staff were ok but they do need to smile a lot more, they were young girls and were either nervous or under pressure not sure which and perhaps one more member of staff would of helped. Fairly attentive but not engaging and the food was served well. The food itself was very good and all of us cleared our plates and the portions were just right. I did manage to squeeze in a dessert, a crumble, that was excellent and no ploppy apple. Good choice of beer, wine and spirits with the wine being typically v expensive especially when you check out the same when buying for your own shopping basket. Would I go back, yes and this time try even harder to get the staff to be a little bit more friendly/engaging.

This was our first return to The White Bear since its redevelopment. We were seated in part of the old pub, close to a wood burning stove. This was alight when we arrived, but the fire soon went out. It was explained to us that the fire caused smoke to enter the room, so it could not be relit. We were a trifle chilly thereafter, though to be fair we were offered a move to a warmer area after eating our starters. The starters were fine, except that my wife’s soup was only lukewarm. My own main course was steak and blue cheese pie, which was very tasty even though the blue cheese influence was slight. However, the accompanying root vegetable mash was cold on the outside and only lukewarm within. A friend’s somewhat insubstantial fish pie arrived in a pot standing on a tray on which was scattered a helping of peas, not the best method of serving vegetables so that they keep warm while the course is being eaten. Service was friendly and efficient, though the supervision of the odd method of adding a tip to the bill was mildly intimidating. An enjoyable meal, but one which did not quite live up to our expectations.

Beautifully refurbished pub which certainly needed attention. Food excellent but was spoilt by the slow service. Drinks took longer to arrive than they should have done and main courses were slow coming. The empty plates were removed at the same time as the dessert menus and once ordered the desserts arrived but only after we approached 3 staff just standing around to enquire were they were. Having done a great refurbishment and improved the food enormously it is a shame that the service isn't up to scratch which is should be easy to improve. Would go again but please don't let us down with sloppy service.

So disappointed with our meal after reading previous reviews and looking forward to a special meal. It took some time for our drinks order to be taken and even longer to arrive Around half the starters were lukewarm. The sticky pork starter was tasty, would benefit from a finger bowl as it was messy. The person who took our order was on his first shift was friendly. Overall our contact with the team was below the standard we would expect and would benefit from training. It felt that the pub had just been opened and lots of minor issues need to be addressed to knock off the rough edges. Not good value for money won’t be going back.

Have been to this Pub a couple of times since it was refurbished, food is very good, service excellent, the interior has been extensively modernised but they have left some of the original nookies, outside is virtually untouched and as it has been for many years. Nice outside area when the weather warms up. Easy to get to but beware of the narrow lanes, the locals can use it as a race track!!! The White Bear has been through a massive renovation and is now owned by Breakspear’s. Loving traditional pubs and having patronised The White Bear for years, enjoying its history, its inglenooks and open fires, I was very apprehensive as to what I would think of the transformation. Initially, I was shocked by the huge, new dining conservatory added on to the period building, but then, totally reassured by the fact that the charming little areas, Inglewood fireplaces, flagstone floors and little cosy nooks have been retained, cleaned up, but retained. The White Bear needed investment and despite me, personally, loving the sheer rusticity of this unique establishment, The White Bear is a business and businesses must make a profit and if customer numbers are dwindling, a business is in trouble - this clearly isn’t happening now. The pub was packed on a Wednesday lunchtime, but because the dining areas are so extensive, over-crowding isn’t an issue. The long bar has disappeared and the pub is now mostly an eating area, although drinks only can be served at tables. The outside patio and front areas have many tables also. We turned up on spec, were given a very friendly welcome, were given an excellent table immediately and were given lots of information about the pub’s new transformation. Lunch was very good indeed-I opted for a pastrami sandwich and my friend for a house hamburger- simple fare, but well-presented, tasty and reasonably priced. The menu is interesting with many pub classics, but there’s enough dishes to interest adventurous diners. Service was excellent, friendly, relaxed and efficient. I shall most definitely return.

This is the first time we have been back to the White Bear since it re-opened, first impressions, not very good, they have ruined what used to be a lovely country Inn Pub. I have been going to the White Bear for about 40 years, even though years ago I did not live in the area, it was the place to go, now I live in Warlingham, so we were frequent visitors until it closed. It looks like any other Pub now, no character at all, while we were there we noticed couple of young girls with their children and push chairs, food all over the floor and table, you would think they were in a coffee shop not a pub or restaurant. After the girls left one of the staff made a half attempt to clean the table, but left all the food on the floor for about 15 minutes, then she came and swept the worse of it away but still left a mess. Management didn't seem that bothered which explains a lot. Not a place to go for a nice meal if this is an example of how they run things.

It is some years since we visited the White Bear which we felt was going downhill somewhat. There were other establishments which offered better value for money and superior cuisine We had heard that the inn was due to open under new management and today was the first opportunity we had to see what is is like. We were very impressed. The new owners have certainly transformed the place and although some may feel that it has lost some of the quaintness which it possessed it is now a lighter and brighter environment than before and more to our taste. The siting of a good sized restaurant area where the old bar and kitchen used to be is an asset. The service provided by cheerful and efficient waiters was very good and the food was excellent. My wife had the scampi which were excellent and I had the cod and chips. The portions in both cases were generous and represented good value for money. The menu is imaginative and wide ranging more so than some other eating houses in the area . We enjoyed our visit and they will certainly see us again,

We were looking forward to returning to the White bear following the renovations. We visited with friends for a meal (3 stars are for the meal which was nice but service was slow) and to have a look at accessibility for our daughter and were shocked with what we found and what we were told. The disabled parking bays have been removed, the ramp is now at the rear but to access the ramp you need to attempt pushing the wheelchair through gravel, not an easy task if you’ve ever tried it! The icing on the cake was to find no disabled toilets, we pointed this out to staff who said it was because it is a listed building and they were also upset that this had been overlooked. We have checked the council plans and briefly looked at accessibility regulations and can only think this was a dreadful oversight by the pub owners and Tandridge council. The whole new layout has had zero consideration for wheelchair users. The upsetting thing is the old White bear was more accessible (at least you could get into the pub and have a meal) and the council plans also show the old owners had plans for a disabled toilet and ramp that for some reason never materialised. We will not be returning to The White Bear & discrimination like this should never be allowed!

It is with regret that I write this review. The attitude of the staff an management was pretty much disgusting. It seems that if you look different to the normal crowd of people you get treated differently this was evident from this pub. Myself an my family my i.e 2 young children arrived looking forward to a Sunday dinner and opening the Christmas envelope as I had come with a friend for lunch last year. One of my children was asleep in my arms whilst we were escorted to our table. The manner of the greeting was cold an uninviting but chose to ignore as we were all hungry an the pub was busy. We sat down to get comfortable only to be told we were put on the wrong table an can we move. I asked where we were going to put and let's put it this way it's right in the middle of the dining area without any consideration that I have a sleeping child in my arms. I kindly requested to be put away from the hustle an bustle. We reluctantly moved and after my child woke realised the table was extremely lopsided. Nothing out of the ordinary so I decided to ask the waitress if she could address this only to be told that there are bar coasters at the bar. I simply asked if she wanted me to fix she replied yes. For me and my family that was enough. So we decided to leave and I asked the lady who wasn't a waitress to cancel any drinks or food we had just ordered. I walked away to not cause a scene. We were approached by another gentleman and asked quite loudly "what's the problem" my wife kindly said we are leaving an do not want a scene. The manager asked again an then gave up an walked away. It was clear the manner in which they came across is that we had the problem we did not we wanted sit somewhere order our meal an enjoy the evening but at a place like this that was not possible. This may not be much for some people writing reviews. But to be treated differently especially with a young family is disgusting. I did not want to feed into the rhetoric of ethnic people making a scene or being angry so we walked away. I am writing a review to let other ethnic families know to be careful when going to this establishment an only hope that they are not treated like we were. Good luck!

So I used to go to the White Bear restaurant many years ago it has now been taken over by a different company. The interior is completely different a cross between modern and traditional . We had a lovely table by the bifold doors , We ordered a starter to share which was the pate, which was really lovely . My husband had one of their specialist pies which he said was very good. I ordered the fish and chips which unfortunately was not the best. I did tell the manager who was on duty and she was very apologetic and gave us a 25% discount on the food portion of our bill . The restaurant had only been open for a month, so there are obviously going to be some teething problems, but this was dealt with very well . I subsequently went back the week after with a friend for lunch and the food was very good. My friend had soup and I had chicken which were both extremely nice. Good range of gins and wine and champagne. Will definitely be going back

I always felt there was something very special having a meal in this old atmospheric pub, now the clean refurbished interior with well trained, uniformed staff has taken that away. Food, no real issues, chicken burger was nicely charred but somewhat dry. Fries, crispy, tasty with just the right touch of rosemary.

Ordered soup and a sandwich. It's not lobster thermidore and tournados Rossini. Soup was tasteless, had a weird texture and had been smothered with chive oil, presumably to make it taste like something. It came with a mini loaf of bread that had been microwaved. The fish goujons sandwich was a small fillet of haddock, which was actually very tasty but not goujons. The bread was whute only because they'd run out of granary and it was at least 2 days old. The sandwich also contained lettuce (fine) and tomatoes that had been butchered into thick and uneven slices including the stalk end. It was lightly covered with mayonnaise. The waitress asked if I wanted sauce, told me it already had tartare on it, and I haven’t seen her again (that was 75 minutes ago). The chips that came with the sandwich were cremated to the point of tooth breaking. About 40 minutes ago, they presented me with a bill for £22.50. I'm waiting for them to try to collect. Take my advice and eat somewhere else.

We were disappointed with our visit to the newly refurbished White Bear. Some of the charm of the pub has been removed by the refurbishment but that could have been forgiven if it hadn't have been for the slow service, lack of meat in the beef and cheese pies and the fact that a £35 bottle of wine was already open when it arrived at the table. We didn't complain but should have but we won't be returning.

Many staff are young, new and inexperienced and could do with some more training to set consistent standards. Seemed to be unclear what they should be doing! Service was slow (both times) and this time my meal came way after everyone else’s had arrived which was disappointing and no apology. Food is ok but more healthy veg , not just broccoli as a side option would make it seem more wholesome. I will go back and give it another chance as it’s our local.

Christmas Eve lunch. We hadn’t booked but staff found us a table for two. Service was excellent and our burgers were very tasty. Neither of us are keen on brioche buns but these were superb. Atmosphere was lovely so a really good experience. Very dog friendly with water bowls, treats and blankets at the entrance for four legged friends. We shall definitely be returning.

We ate here the night before lockdown. The staff were excellent and works masks throughout, retained a social distance and felt really safe! Very happy to see that some customers think the opposite as it means more likelihood of getting a table. From start to finish the good was amazing in excellent ambiance.Service was quick.I had the soup and fish and chips and we all had different dishes which were all incredible.Highly recommended and can’t wait to visit again once lockdown is over!!

We were so disappointed that the two staff who served us today (14th Dec 2020 12.30pm) at the White Bear, Warlingham were not wearing masks. We observed 2 other members of staff who we did not come into contact with, one wore his mask on his chin and the other wore his mask correctly. We have friends who were due to go to the White Bear, they will now be cancelling their booking as they do not wish to be exposed unnecessary to the possible Covid virus. We chose the White Bear to go for lunch on a quiet Monday as we thought the White Bear would have been following Government guidance.Really shocked to be served by our waitress who had no mask, as we were seated and she asked what we would like to drink, I asked why she was not wearing a mask, she replied that she had forgotten her mask and she is exempt anyway. So at this stage we had shown our concern. She did not go to put a mask on, she brought the drinks to the table with no mask, with no 2 meter distance. We were then served the food by a male member of staff who was also not wearing a mask, I asked him why he was not wearing a mask and he said he has a chest condition so therefore is exempt....! He returned with no mask to clear our plates and we asked for the bill so we could leave. At no stage were there a 2 meter distance as both members of staff stood over us at the table. So disappointed as the food is always good at the White Bear, but now we and family have no wish to go.

My Wife and I have been coming here since we met in '82 and Sue before that, She had her 18th there. My Wife ordered a Prawn & Chorizo starter and a Steak Sandwich. The prawns were tainted and had to be returned and even the replacement dish wasn't right, possibly even worse. The steak in the sandwich was almost putrid, which was a first for both of us, in a restaurant/pub. We asked our waiter to smell Her food and he simply shrugged his head and agreed. We can't believe how far backwards the food has gone but it's a decent place for a beer or a glass of wine.

We had a great meal this Saturday. 4x adults and 2x children. All the food was excellent. We had a mix of main - burgers, fish and chips, pork belly and pork tenderloin. Everyone cleared their plates and everything came out well presented and hot. Desserts were also great. Again everyone cleared their plates. Service was really good and the all COVID nonsense was handled well.Already planning our next trip. Thank you White Bear!

Booked for a group of 6 for early evening meal. All I can say is excellent service from start to end. Health and safety followed throughout with the pub having lots of different rooms for groups lending itself to being COVID safe. The menu catered for all tastes with a children’s menu also. Had a main and dessert with empty plates for everyone. Will definitely return.

I've visited this pub a couple of times over this summer, delicous food at reasonable prices, lovely ambience, plenty of outdoor space and very cosy inside. Very clean, I stayed until last orders and could smell the disinfectant where they had started cleaning for after closing. I'd recommend this pub to anyone visiting the area and of course locals too. I'll definitely be back for dinner soon!

Really poor management no customer service .We have been here twice in the last month and we have left twice due to the manager .The first time we arrived we had small baby with us and due to this awful virus where nervous to go into a small pub, so we asked could we eat outside in the seating area .The waitress had to go ask the manager who said no food was been served outside today .it was overcast that day So we left no drama .We returned again as it’s a pub we have always enjoyed going too. When we arrived the outdoor seating area was full of people having food.It was a beautiful mid week afternoon,so we asked if we could sit at a table in the garden .The waitress had to go and asked the manager .The waitress retuned to say the manager had said no.I went to manager to try and say we had small baby and the seating area was package with people sitting back to back . Not a meter apart .I said would it be ok if we sat in garden. Her reply was and I kid you not sure if I let you do it I’ll have to let everyone do it .The waitress was even embarrassed by this .I couldn’t believe her remark , so again we left and the pub lost out on over £150 due to a manager who lacks any customer service .I hope in the future she will show a little bit more empathy to new mums in this awful stressful time and understands how difficult trips are with a young baby nowadays for new mums The pub has lost out and we will not be returning.

Delicious menu, great selection of wines and ales, classic oldy-worldy country pub environment, coupled with warm, friendly, attentive service and very reasonable prices - the White Bear is a fantastic place to go with friends and family. Cannot recommend it highly-enough. Looking for somewhere special to go for traditional Sunday roast or an evening out - look no further.

Tranquil countryside location. Lovely old pub. Mediocre food. Staff was very friendly and responsive, but in need of good training. We loved the location and the countryside views. Huge parking, making it very convenient. Even during the pandemic it was busy, quite popular as it seems. We were not impressed with the cleanliness, our table bad baby high chair were sticky, not clean. Staff helped with this quickly though.Wine selection is very good. We enjoyed both rosé and white. Food however, far from impressive. Chicken was dry and overcooked. Beef in burgers was excellent, but the dishes themselves were just average.Would recommend, but they need a serious boost in regards to the food they serve. It let's the place down a bit. The building is lovely, interior is traditional, cozy and quirky.Would come back, hoping for better food.

went here on Tuesday, average food, limited menu which is understandable, that does not excuse the fact that they have doubled the price of alcohol to almost London club prices, just under £4 for pepsi, nearly £7 for a 500ml cider.wetherspoons are £2.40 and £3.30 respectively, it is a shame as i had heard some good revues about this place, alas i will not be returning.

There were flys everywhere in the garden. believe me when I tell you we have eaten in some of the best Resturants and pubs in the U.K. and travel up and down the country and we know “standards”, this is not a decent Sunday roast. presenting and cooking standards need to be lifted massively. off to the dentist to get the chip in my teeth the poatatos left... won’t be back.

I've always been a big fan of The White Bear and was keen to see how they've adapted following coronavirus. We went for a lunch break lunch in the garden and it was delicious! My partner had fish and chips, I had the bacon cheeseburger and we shared a side of onion rings. Food was fantastic as was drinks and service. Would highly recommend for anyone looking for an outside eating spot.

Today 12 of us chose the White Bear as our first post-lockdown pub. We were attracted by the fact we could eat in the garden as per their website - "food served every day from 12 noon to 7pm from the Burger Shack in the garden". When we arrived the Shack was closed and food could not be taken into the garden. To rub salt in the wounds there was no real ales and only one lager. Disappointing but these are unusual times and we will be back having given them time to get their act in order.

Our group of four friends thoroughly enjoyed a midweek luncheon here, before sitting around the coal fire with coffee. The interior is highly attractive: chunky carved furniture in beamed rooms, with alcoves and window bays adjacent. Seats are cushioned and comfortable; framed photographs and prints line whitewashed walls.Steak, sea-bass, lamb burger and vegetables were all delicious. Service was courteous. One point prevented the White Bear from being a five-star success. The four handpulled beers, all from microbreweries, are undistinguished. May I suggest a full-bodied, old-fashioned English ale such as Taylor's Landlord or Greene King Abbot?Highly recommended.

We have visited this pub a lot over the years and experienced its ups and downs. Last time we went last summer it was poor for food and service but we were sitting outside. We decided to visit with my daughter who has autism and learning difficulties and thought if she presented any behavioural challenges on the day we would not be too disappointed if we had to leave. We arrived at nearly 2pm knowing they stop serving at 3pm but were relying on it being quieter by then.On this visit service couldn’t have been better. We sat at a large table-we could have sat in any area. There are a couple of small steps but managing a wheelchair would not be difficult. Our waiter (Paul I think) came and said hello immediately and smiled at my daughter. This made her feel comfortable and at ease. We chose a large table so we could spread out her paraphernalia she needs to feel calm. We ordered drinks and Paul asked if a glass would be ok for Georgi-good attentive service. The food was fine-plenty of it and quality was good. The steak is a little overpriced for the type of cut but we don’t mind paying if our general experience is enjoyable. We were nearing kitchen closing time but they didn’t mind serving us desserts and coffees-we even asked if it was ok and were totally reassured by our waitress. The atmosphere was calm and efficient and service was very prompt-a necessity for our party! The White Bear has redeemed itself for us so we will return for a garden visit in the summer.

We read the great reviews here on TripAdvisor so were expecting a really good Sunday lunch. The prices are high so we expected good quality food. We were disappointed with our starters, which wasn’t a good sign, but we thought the roasts may make up for it. Alas, they were just tasteless. The potatoes were insipidly pale and the few vegetables were overcooked. Everything on the plate was lukewarm too.The only good thing about the experience was the service. We couldn’t wait to leave and won’t be back.

A nice pub. We had Sunday roast which was very average. Roast potatoes are pretty tasteless. Veg was basic and just ok. I had chicken which I couldn’t fault as plenty although the stuffing was laughable. My partner agreed regarding veg and potatoes. She had the pork belly which she said was nice but the crackling was a joke as not only couldn’t cut it or break it as so rubbery so how do you eat it? Couldn’t fault the service but then again how hard is it to put drinks and plates on a table. Been here before in the summer and is always nice if you can get a seat in the garden. Would come again to try other food off the menu.

We have been coming here infrequently for years, sadly we suspect this place is now resting on its past reputation. When we arrived, one end of the restaurant smelled very unpleasantly of fish and the other end of the toilets. We also left smelling like a bonfire, I get there are open fires, maybe they need cleaning. We only had main courses, the veggie sausages and the halloumi burger. My burger was served on a tiny wood board, unsanitary and completely impractical. The halloumi appeared to have been deep fried to death and the whole thing was dry and squeaky. Fries were tasty though. The veggie sausages came with hard, inedible peas and the gravy was lumpy and appeared to be made up from powder. Considering the price of our meals there was no love put into preparing and serving them and they were very poor. There are very few options for vegetarians or vegans. The front of house staff were fabulous and very kind and helpful, we were very grateful to them and enjoyed the complementary coffee and tea they gave us.

Such a lovely venue with lovely food always. This sunday however we were in for a shock when we ordered extra custard for the crumble. The waitress came back and informed us that there wasn't much left so we would not be getting any. she did say it was strange as she had put extra on the bill.I spoke to the manager and pointed out that it was 4.00pm and they serve up until 9 so why not make some more.she did agree and take the sweets of the bill.It did feel a bit like trying for seconds at school, although this time we were paying.Poor show white bear.Staff are always perfect and manager helpful.I would be very careful about what your kitchen staff inform the waitresses in the future. One more thing, way to many cloves in the crumble. We counted an average of 12 in each bowl.

We visited The White Bear in 2017 as a group of 6 and had a great evening, food was really nice and the setting was exactly what you want around Christmas. Because of our good experience in 2017 we decided to go back there this December for our annual pre Christmas dinner. Unfortunately it was not how we remember. Everything on our dinner was hard apart from the turkey and Yorkshire's (which to be fair were really nice). You could barely cut through the potatoes and A sprout flew off of my plate when trying to cut into it.

Returned to this lovely garden centre and was warmly welcomed into the restaurant,it was early lunchtime but there was a good buzz of others enjoying their food. There is a seasonal menu and wanting a fairly light lunch we opted for the mezze platter to share. The service is first class our waitress very friendly,we ordered a beer and glass of red wine to accompany the dish. The drinks and food arrived speedily and it was delicious, colourful, and beautifully presented. Our waitress returned to check everything was ok which of course it was.We had coffee afterwards then left.We were acknowledged by all the staff working there who cheerfully said Goodbye. This is a venue not to be missed,I noticed the lunch menu, they also do breakfast and whilst there at the weekend they were serving a beautiful afternoon tea to a group of ladies…I look forward to a return visit soon…Yours Stuart…
