The Wheatsheaf Hungry Horse in Canterbury

Having stumbled across The Wheatsheaf last night we were glad we did - the staff were extremely friendly, the food was great and cooked just as we asked, even the red wine was warm. We came across The Wheatsheaf when local opposition, The Chestfield Barn, informed us at 8pm that the kitchen had closed, even though it is advertised to stay open to 8.30pm. I have to say Chestfield Barn's loss was The Wheatsheaf's gain and we will return

Pubs alive saver stopped for lunch n returned for dinner everything else in the area was either completely unaccessible or totally overpriced honestly this pub is the only reason I'd return to the area was looked after very well by staff all day very impressed five starts all round and food was spot on x

Hadnt been for a while and saw some reviews wasn't sure about but it's even better than before service was amazing food to a really good standard well worth the 2mains for £15 will be back next week as already booked a table!!!

Drove past and thought it looked nice we went in with friends just for a drink but ended up staying for food the service and staff were so friendly and attentive. The food was great value and really tasty would highly recommend and will return.

Was here for a weekend away to see family and wanted somewhere for the kids to play while having lunch. Kids play area was great and the food was just what we was looking for something for everyone. Amazing new refurb, so different from the previous time I had been in. Manager on shift recommend getting the Greene king sport app as a football game was on, ended up having a free welcome drink, with the app and a further 10% off rounds whilst any sport is being shown! I was only going to stay for one drink but the staff were so lovely and friendly that they made us want to stay longer. Definitely be going back!

Reserved a table and my family dog was also welcomed. Good range of alcoholic and alcoholic drinks for designated drivers :) We went with steak and if you’re very hungry can double it up - very tasty You can also order some food for your canine friend too Friendly staff and warm friendly environment- thanks all :)

Booked for my mother in laws birthday, they was very accommodating. We had to preorder due to being a larger table of 12 however they were more than happy to assist us when adding extra people just the day before! Was a lovely atmosphere with happy staff and good service. Not one of us had any complaints to make about our meal and had a lovely afternoon. So much so that we are going back in a few weeks for another family get together!

I was visiting a friend and she suggested here as it had been refurbished and had recently had an enjoyable Sunday Lunch here. I made a reservation online earlier in the day. We were running late, so tried to amend online but the booking system didnt give that as an option. Tried calling but no answer, but when we arrived we could see why as the pub was busy. We were served instantly, ordered our drinks and were taken to our table. We asked if we could be moved as we liked to look of a booth and it wasn't a problem. Food order was taking and interaction with staff was friendly and welcome. The pub is decorated lovely, tables are spread out and had a good ambience. Food was served quickly and we were asked if we wanted sauces and also checked in to see if everything ok. Food was great - my friend and I shared some small plates and her daughter had a burger. Will definately return when back in the area.

The old Hungry Horse was so bad that even though we could use Tesco vouchers to eat free we didnt go there After the refurb. I was hoping the food would be improved. Nope. It was worse than before. Waited 45 minutes for a coffee! The meals were even longer. 3 Sunday lunches were ordered. The menu shows a lovely plate with gravy boat and lots of veg. The beef is advertised "served pink" it was overcooked and had obviously been warmed up. The "turkey " was a mush of something. Didn't taste of turkey just salt..The meals had a splash of gravy not a gravy boat in sight. Only got cold carrots and peas with a few aunt Bessie spuds. Absolutely disgusting. It's now got a conservatory built on which is non smoking but people were openly smoking. After complaining the manager gave a £25 refund to be fair. Will not be returning .

Great choice on the brunch menu, came with my wife, we both had the full english. Really reasonable and lovely atmosphere.

Came for lunch, we had booked and it was very busy, the girls were run off their feet and clearly trying there best. The roast was lovely, shame that some people were so rude to the staff. We will definitely return in the future

Walked in and waited patiently to be sat. Staff we're walking around at therir own leisure. We were told someones going to serve us. We waited ten minutes and walked out again. Service was much much better before your refurb. Now you've tried to make it into a place its not. We wont be back.

There was a lot to chose from on the menu so was very spoilt for choice. We went to the bar and ordered our food and drinks and was served by jen who was very helpful. We ordered our food and it came out quite quick. It was lovely and hot when it came to the table also tasted very nice.

Came in last Saturday first time since refurb and wow it looks and feels great we ordered off the brunch menu I had the big breakfast and yes it's big!! It's delicious came with our two children the play park is a god send for when they get bored at the table kids food was delicious they loved the hash browns staff were really friendly and attentive. Havent been here for years so decided to give it a try, So glad we did. place looks lovely, open and plenty of seating, nice atmosphere. Food was good and great value. Staff were so kind and attentive. The lovely manager made my autistic daughter’s night , taking the time to patiently interacting with her and blowing up balloons for her. Even letting her take some home, she was over the moon. So thoughtful and kind. (I’m sorry I don’t know her name but Thank you so much!) Will definitely be back. Lovely experience

Date of visit 18/02/2024 We were a party of 10 adults with two children Celebrating my sons birthday we were asked to pre book our meal which we did the day before, the roasts were very mediocre at best 3 slices of meat 2.5 roast potatoes which very small and equal to one medium potato at best, the cauliflower cheese consisted of one small floret, the vegetables were ok but spread around the plate to look more substantial, the only thing which I would say was acceptable was the Yorkshire pudding, a very disappointing experience, it was no better than the Hungry Horse which was the previous incarnation of the Wheatsheaf We will not be going back again

Well, what a change. The refurbishment is lovely. It's like walking into a completely different restaurant. The service was friendly. It was a little slow to be served at the bar, but I think this is down to it being a sunday and busy. You can order via an app, but we were not in any rush. The menu and food are a huge improvement. My mixed grill was cooked to perfection. My hubby had the katsu curry, and it looked delicious. Our toddler finished his dinner off with a chocolate brownie and a climb on the climbing frame. We will definitely be back.

Restaurant looks very run down, torn seats, mix match chairs and very dirty. Food- trying to be polite but had no flavour and have seen child’s portions bigger. Meant to be a cheap eating venue but well over priced for what you receive gone right down hill. Tasteless soft drinks, to be honest we would not return nor recommend, it was horrible and a waste of money.

First of all I’d like to mention the staff are very good, this review is not about them! We ordered the Wednesday currie offer two curries including a drink £14.00. On ordering I mentioned I was Gluton free which wasn’t a problem as the currie I ordered is GF. The food arrived cold, one of the dishes was so dry it must of been microwaved to death and left to go cold! The rest of the food was awful, food was missing and replaced with cold chips! Chips were not advertised in this dish they must of just tossed then on to replace the missing Nan bread!. When I went to pay the bill I was charged £22.29 instead of £14.00 as I’d said I was Gluton free it didn’t come under the offer, the curries I ordered is GF anyway so I need not of mentioned it! This meant the drink I ordered cost me an extra £4 (which I did get a refund for) The manager I spoke to was very nice and told me she didn’t realise this would happen and it was a learning curve for her too! Avoid the food it was rank and I’ve been in the loo all night! 🤮 as I said the staff are good but the kitchen should be closed!

Been here twice in a space of a year and half , same experience both times. Limited menu, meals out at different times, kitchen equipment ‘condemned ‘ hence limited menu, hot drinks machine not in use, broken glass in garden which a child cut their finger on, drunk men shouting in the carpark . I witness a poor elderly lady get so flustered and confused as everything she went to order wasn't available. Only positive is staff are friendly and changed an order which was far too spicy for my child to eat. Surely a limited menu is temporary but doesnt seem that way… we never visit again.

Very disappointed after our last visits, burger was lovely but chips were barely warm and same for onion rings. We returned after awhile away to much better food but unfortunately things have gone back downhill. Saying that the staff are really nice.. Not sure that we will return again.

What a morning, my mother & I was looking forward to a Sunday roast ,after a few years of not going to the hungry horse for bad service & food ,I thought maybe just maybe the chef knows now how to use the microwave. First of all I have never EVER been in this restaurant and NEVER had a full menu to choose from. The beef Sunday was not available only turkey or nut loaf, don't like either one of the alternatives so i started to look through the menu..my mother ordered the turkey roast which was warm-ish the turkey ding ( Microwaved obviously ) the Yorkshire puddings were so hard you could of put a window Through...the veg was cold....I ordered a bowl of chips just to get my dear old mum to ear her dinner without me just staring at her.......CHIPS how can you get chips wrong??????????? But you did! Half warm....I did think stuff it! eat them & get out of here!, ate a couple of chips then bit a chip that was hard...horrible! I told the staff about the dinner & 1 bowl of chips and I did get a refund for the chips, I also explained how this lunch had gone, the "sorry so sorry didn't cut it tbh......also I'd love to know when the chief made an Appearance at the adjacent table how comes his tunic was dirty? He doesn't cook!!!!! He dings! Everything is microwaved.....except for their stake thats Apparently cook's fresh that I will never get to try no a chance I've got a feeling it might Chewing a Lump the elastic bands..im not willing to be £15 out of pocket ..1 thing I will say is there was 2 girls working behind the bar.....they were lovely Completely understanding where I was coming from They get it every day its never stops ,bad food everytime, Apologising for missing food the list gose on. Maybe they should change the name to the highwayman.

What you would expect for taking the family out here. Food is cheap and quick. To get served can be a bit slow but is friendly enough

Previously visited The Wheatsheaf four years ago and this has sadly changed for the worse. The dining area is very tired looking which we can understand especially in current climate but the food was poor and that's being generous. Now I fully accept the prices are very reasonable but the food served was no different than your high street frozen microwave roast dinner, as for the stuffing ball you would need an angle grinder to cut into it so would have been better to leave off the plate. The beef (one slice for adult lunch) was tougher than the krays. Such a shame as this used to be worth a visit, unfortunately we will not be returning.

The staff were so helpful. We asked for changes to the vegetarian dish and it was not a problem and they catered for our every need. All the staff were so friendly as well. Would definitely recommend paying the Wheatsheaf a visit.

Waited 40 minutes in a cold room, I completely understand that the door has to be open for the kids, but wow was I cold. After 40 minutes the dinner arrived..Completely underwhelmed.... I can't even tell you. Missed a couple of items off the meal as well, but I already wanted to leave 20 minutes ago, so couldn't really be bothered to ask for these items. Worst dining experience for a long time..... I'm not going to slate the staff, as they were working hard, but management need to look at the wait for the food and the food they serve. Awful.....Could be a better story, it used to be really good in there.
