Old Gate Inn in Canterbury

We stayed the easter weekend with a group of friends and had an excellent experience at this hotel. The service was excellent from checkin to checkout. The staff were super and extremely helpful. The rooms were clean and in good order. The breakfast was also excellent. We would definitely recommend this hotel for a short stay

The evening out was at the spur of the moment together with my wife and daughter. From the start to the end, the service was impeccable and waited upon by Jack who was attentive to everything, even giving me advice on how best to have my rib-eye steak cooked, which I'm glad I took. All our meals were cooked to perfection as one would like when you dine out. My compliments go out to the chef (Chapeau). When we next visit my daughter and her partner we will definitely be dining there again as a must. Thank you 'The Old Gate Inn' team and establishment.

We love this place, we’ve been coming here for a few years now. This time was for our daughter’s fourth birthday and they made such a lovely effort and even made a birthday brownie. Jack gave us excellent service.

We went as a special occasion on mothers day,we expected it to be busy and anticipated delays but we waited over an hour between starters and main course, the starters had ingredients missing and we were not able to order steak as they had run out,there was nothing special regarding the theme "Mothers day" namely nothing extra for the special women (mums) present or at least not that we were offered,at no time did a member of staff speak to us during our meal to ensure we were ok etc and enjoying our experience.We had planned to enjoy the three courses on offer but as we had waited so long and were basically ignored we left after the main course. They were very busy and our server was apologetic and polite but the lack of menu items and the slow service ,soured our experience.

Not the first time we have visited but have to say as a family we had a fantastic experience. From the greeting all the way through to leaving, the service was spot on. We were there for Mother’s Day so went for starters, mains and desserts. The food I have to say for all of us was so so good. Looking forward to coming back soon.

Visited with my partner for lunch. We both had the Signature burger which was absolutely delicious. Service was excellent. There is a good amount of parking available. Would highly recommend.

All expectations were met in this friendly treat of a place,and very historical.Huge portions of food very tasty and value for money as were the drinks.I even took a lovely container full of half of my proprtionous dinner.Although clearly rushed off their feet in this thriving place barman Ray and waiter the ever so friendly James were a pure delight with their welcoming natures!

Lovely Sunday dinner really enjoyable experience

Nicely decorated, 5 ale pumps but only 2 beers available which was disappointing. Doubly disappointing was that 1 of the beers was Doom Bar, which is not a good choice. Cost was astounding - 1 pint, small alcohol free bottled beer and a ½ pint lemonade/lime , £12:20 ! Surely not.

Found this by chance on way back from Dover. Greeted by friendly staff & the pub is really nice & cosy. Me & my partner had the 2 course offer, both of us had 2 different starters & 2 different main courses. I had the duck with spring onion & hoisin sauce pizza, which was one of the best! Lovely thin crust & plenty of duck meat. It was soo big, I took 1/2 of it home. All the meals we had were excellent quality & value for money. A special Thank You to Sam our waiter, who was really friendly, polite & a credit to the place - We can certainly highly recommend & will be going back there for sure.

Lunch time visit, moderately busy however staff and food was not only fast but superb. Well done guys very very enjoyable visit.

Visited this pub a couple of weeks ago to see a friend, the venue and drinks themselves were fine, but a few days ago I received a parking charge notice saying that I am being fined £100 for parking at the pub for 2 hours. There is absolutely no clear signage on entrance to the pub or walking into the pub itself, and I wasn't warned of this by staff at any point when I entered. Very unlikely to ever visit again due to this experience.

4 of us out and had mains and deserts. The food was excellent. The building is really old but clean and lots of smaller rooms and not been ripped open on the inside. Staff were wonderful and couldn’t do enough. They were just a little short of staff at the start. Place was very clean. Definitely go back. Prices on párr with all restaurants/ pubs in this area

Staff, very friendly and welcoming. The food was delicious, I had the steak and wine pie and would have liked more gravy with it.

It was a buffet for a wake and more people attended than expected. However, there was still plenty of delicious food. Would definitely recommend the venue for a wake.

Chris and his team were very welcoming for our large group celebrating a birthday they catered for everyone's needs from my 1 year old son to my 80year old nan. The staff are so friendly and the food and service was excellent.

Great, homecooked roast (good portion size, nice selection of well cooked veg) , great service, cosy and vibrant atmosphere. I'll be back soon!

This is my local and it never disappoints! Food is always 10/10 with amazing options. Service is always spot on and staff are always so friendly. Such a good atmosphere and homely feel to the pub. Could not recommend enough!!!

This place is great! We always come here on an occasion and never disappoints. Always greated by a friendly smile. Foods always top notch. Great value for money, plenty of variety. We'll definitely be back.

A really good place to go for food a drink service was good and felt welcomed from when stepping through the door. Food was really good no complaints.

A really romantic setting for me and my partner. Food was exceptional, so tasty and presentation was fab. The staff were so friendly and welcoming. Such a warm atmosphere and very reasonably priced. Will 100% be going again!

Dinner was cold particularly the veg, I had a particularly large parsnip which was raw. I know veg can be served al dente but that was ridiculous. The rest of the meal tasted like it had been reheated and of poor quality. I chose the 3 meat option, beef good, turkey good and pork belly poor. Will not be returning.

The staff were really welcoming and could not have been more attentive. The place was very clean and we were seated quickly. The food was delicious four of us went and had different meals and they were all great. Value for money was good. Plenty of parking. We will be back

Warm welcome on a very cold winter evening. Good choice of ales and excellent evening menu. Very good service from all staff and the quality and price of the meals was spot on.

Table 16 is my favourite table and we were able to sit there. The music was too loud, but guests at the next table asked for it to be turned down which it was, otherwise I would have asked. The mushroom starter was not hot enough. I had to ask it to be returned to the microwave half way through eating it. Overall we both felt the food was okay, but not great. Service was good except the young man kept repeating 'No worries' all the time. This was annoying.

Christmas menu had by all. Superb food. Outstanding and prompt service from Freya and Chris. All staff very attentive but not over bearing. Good value for money.

It was 36f outside but warm and welcoming in this great pub. Lovely seating areas with a good atmosphere. Food for all 4 people was excellent. All served together and food piping hot. Excellent service from Sam and other staff. Have been here many times and will be returning again.

The brunch was exactly what I needed, piping hot and timely. Will visit again.

If you like battered fish and chips, be prepared for a whale. Really enjoyed it

We didn't eat food here today, but received a lovely friendly welcome when we arrived, had a drink followed by a later coffee, wasn't rushed at all, plenty of extra inside seats through a side door, cosy, plenty of history in this building, very friendly landlord. We will definitely be back to eat and followed you guys on the socials.

First Time there. The Staff pleasant and polite. The place is nice, good atmosphere. But we ordered dishes that include Chips, the Chips were rock hard ( double fried maybe, left overs and then refried for us maybe) ruined the experience for me. At that price I expect every bit of my meal to be fresh and perfect .

Relaxing, good food and excellent service.

Admittedly the pub was very busy but the wait for our food was not acceptable.Also not all options were available and what food we did has was very unpleasant.Even my vegetables were cold,and as for my fishcakes,tasteless.What a shame.A second visit will not be warranted!

Service was horrendous today. Took over 20 minutes to clear table after finished eating and we had to get someone’s attention. Nobody came to ask how the meal was and after waiting 25 mins for a brownie it took over 30 mins for anyone to come down and ask in-fact nobody came down and we had to go to bar to pay. Only to be told I couldn’t use my voucher as the card I was given told me, you can’t use it within 24 hours of downloading the app which isn’t stated anywhere on the card given. Will not be returning.

Great service,also all staff so polite every one stepped aside as I went back to seat after loo,manager excellent, food and drink excellent ,can't fault anything tbh will most definitely return ,next time with mum when she is well

Christmas Day lunch at the OGI Canterbury was perfect. Delicious food, lovely staff, warm & welcoming festive surroundings.

Atmosphere was warm and festive. True pub dining experience. Really enjoyed the Xmas crackers and card that awaited us. Food was very good. Dessert probably was the most enjoyed of all the courses. Pavlova was outstanding. Improve on the attentiveness for little things. Refill of beverages/water bottle and clearing the table of unneeded items (e.g., wine glasses for the kids). All in all, we left very pleased.

Had a lovely lunch here, warm and friendly, great service and value for money. Food was very good. Will definitely be back. Love that it’s dog friendly too.

Good food, good surroundings and good service.

Stopped for a quick bite to eat after travelling for work. Skipped breakfast so thought I'd treat myself to a nice lunch. Friendly hosting made me feel very welcome and I was seated immediately. Was somewhat busy, and was taken to a quiet nook. Drinks order was taken swiftly, and upon returning with the drinks I was ready to place my order. I had decided on scallops and prawns to start and seabass and chorizo to follow. The timing and perfection of the dishes cannot be overstated. Prompt delivery of the starter, and just as I had cleaned the plate, I was asked if I was ready for the main or if I needed a moment. Famished as I was, I opted for as soon as possible, what couldn't have been more than 5 minutes later. A stunning piece of art is placed before me, the seabass cooked to perfection, and the accompanying chorizo and veg, compliment it beautifully. Not having the intention of getting dessert, but curious to see what I had yet to discover, I ordered a Trillionaire something or other, (I wish I had written it down.) I was not disappointed. Reasonable price, great atmosphere, amazing team, and I highly recommended a coffee from Chris too, he definitely knows his stuff, with promises off more to show if I return, which I definitely will. Possibly as a work function if they provide.

Arrived off the cuff at 5.30 after a pre Christmas shopping trip with the family 7 of us. Checked online and said we're fully booked. However really helpful and asked us to give them 5 minutes whilst they scrabbled a table together for us. Meal was delicious 😋 great service. All were very happy to help and couldn't do enough for us. On the day before Christmas Eve, too. Hats off to this wonderful place. Thank you 😊

Went for Christmas celebration with friends. Service was good. Menu quite varied. Had turkey that came with 'crispy' potatoes, but really hard, so much so that could not put fork into them. Only brussel sprouts, no other veg. Only 1 pig-in-blanket, had to order extra side. Quite disappointing. Not sure if would go there again next year. Quite pricey too. £30+ for each of us, 5 in our party (2 courses set menu) with a £20 discount voucher. Staff very helpful.

We booked breakfast here because it was an ideal spot being right next to the Canterbury park and ride car park. I don't want you to think of this as a bad review, but you are definitely in the "Requires improvement" category. When I walk into any restaurant, the first thing I want is to be greeted. Welcomed with a smile. Even if you're busy, all you need to do is acknowledge my existence. Once you've done that I am happy to wait. Several staff members walked right past us and we we're completely ignored with a sort of "Not my job to serve you" attitude. All it needed was a "Good morning, somebody will be with you shortly" But I had to go and find somebody to announce my arrival for the table that I had booked. So, you're on the back foot right now, and whilst the rest of the service was adequate, it was what I would describe as indifferent. Not friendly or welcoming in any way. During the meal there was no "Is everything OK for you?" or "Can I get you anything else?... A top up for your coffee perhaps?" After the meal, I had to go and find somebody in order to pay. This really annoys me and I'm always tempted to simply walk out.... Although, of course I never would. Afterwards, in all fairness I was seen off with a "Thank you" and a "Merry Christmas" which sounded genuine but too little too late I'm afraid. My wife very much enjoyed her Eggs Royale, which she said was delicious. My full English breakfast however was lacking. And here's why: You know when you've had the mushrooms in the fridge a bit too long and they start going a bit wrinkly? This is the point where you throw them in the recycling.... You do not serve them to me. They were not eaten. I enjoy a fried tomato on my breakfast, but I do not enjoy a raw tomato which has been introduced to a hot frying pan for about 2 seconds. Cold, hard and not eaten.... £10.95 for a full English. OK, that's 2 sausage, 2 bacon (so far so good) and 1 egg. One egg? Come on, the sausage to egg ratio is now off by 100%. If I have two sausage, 2 bacon then I want 2 eggs..... The toast was nice, albeit from the world's tiniest loaf of bread, and everything else was decent enough. Hot, fresh and tasty. You see, I will give credit where it's due. The coffee was good too, but at £3.75 for a rather small cup, on top of the price of the breakfast, I wasn't going to fork out for a second cup. But that's OK because you never offered my one anyway. Even though by the time you served our breakfast both our coffee cups were empty. Don't get me wrong, the experience was not terrible, and you may even think I am being "Nit picky" but the truth is that there are plenty of alternative venues where I can get a great breakfast for a similar price without all these minor errors. Which is exactly what I will be doing in future. Not out of vindictiveness or because I'm a "Grumpy old man". But simply because in these times, forking out £25 - £30 for breakfast for two is not a everyday treat... It's a rare treat and I want to get the best value for money that I can. I hope you take this honest review in the spirit in which it is sent and I am sure you will do better in future.

Visited yesterday. Haf festive menu. Delicious!! Staff were so attentive without being intrusive. Served quickly even though restaurant full with quite a few large table groups. Lovely cosy atmosphere. We'll be back and I will thorough recommend it

Walked in - didn't book ahead - plenty of space Friday lunchtime. Excellent food, refreshing beer! Food arrived quite soon after ordering and was piping hot! Staff were friendly and welcoming.

We parked for the night in our motorhome at the Park & Ride next door, and went in for our evening meal with our dog. We ordered gammon eggs, chips & peas and eggs, chips & peas + shandy & cider. Very good price and service.

Great location. Really nice welcome as we arrived. Food was good, lots of choices. Seemed short of staff for the number of people in there, we had to wait a while to order our food. But staff very pleasant.

Looking at my previous review I had not eaten here for 8 years!! (not having enjoyed the experience at that time). I believe it's changed management since then :-). 10 of us attended for Christmas lunch. Everyone really enjoyed the excellent food, lovely turkey roasts, steak, pies. Friendly service. Very happy to eat here again in the future.

Family lunch on a Sunday. We had a very young baby with us and were provided with a good table tucked out of the way from the main dining area. The service was excellent and the food was very good. If you have not visited before, just remember to enter your car's registration number into the console next to the front door. It might be advisable to book at weekends.

Myself my son and grandson found this gem of a place yesterday on a cold wet Sunday From the moment we arrived we were greeted warmly by the friendly staff We shared the snacking board which was delicious and very good value ,will definitely go again and sample the lunch menu . Five stars all round and well done to all the team!

A really nice, well maintained, friendly pub. Huge selection of drinks, cosy seating area for just drinkers, real fires going. Toilets were clean. Priced right. Don’t forget to enter your car registration when you go in. Recommended

Service was so friendly from the moment we walked through the door with all staff bright chatty and efficient. The food was outstanding we really didn’t expect this quality, hats off to whoever was in the kitchen on December 2nd the chicken burger was coated...

The food here was very tasty, large portions, hot, and well presented. Everyone in our 7 person party enjoyed their food.

There was a technology problem between order being taken and it getting to the kitchen,we waited an hour for our meal!! Also I am vegetarian, there was only a vegan roast dinner,the vegan option was horrible and didnt eat it need vegetarian option as well the potatoes veg were nice

Good value nice food well cooked

We had the pie of the day (steak and red wine) with mash and seasonal veg. With a nice bottle of Shiraz to accompany it. The food was amazing. Full of juicy steak with a very light puff pastry. Staff very attentive. Highly recommended.
