We have just walked out of the York one as the waiters were too busy to serve us a total disgrace going yo our usual one in Wakefield

The one at York is the best of the lot

Great value takeaway fish and chips. Very smart restaurant, very swish with good speedy service and quality fish and chips, tad salty but still impressive. Well worth it!

I adore the bread which was soft and crunchy in the same token, buttered creasing into each other were the baps. The chips were with balsamic and were sizzled! The bakedbeans were refreshing! The waterbottle was cold which was ideal! The out door seating area-spoton!

This must be the most popular fish and chip restaurant in the UK, queues for both sitting in and take away, and after eating here I know why!!!

Wonderful service and very tasty, hot, fresh food. We booked ahead as a large group and were looked after by a really lovely and helpful waitress. Everyone's food came quickly and together and was delicious and plentiful. The added touch of a gift for the children when we left was unexpected and a super touch. Thanks for a great lunch.

Called in on my way home near to closing time. Made to feel welcome, excellent service, quick food service, lovely soup to start, good sized fish and chips followed by plum and apple crumble. Can highly recommend.

This place, as well as the staff, is brilliant, warm, and friendly, and the food is perfect. I take my dad there, and the staff all know him as he has dementia. It's a place he can go to by himself and it's not far away. He feels safe knowing he is in the good hands of all the staff who look after him, and that means a lot.

Kids meals good value. Very aware of allergies and cooked food accordingly. Maybe could offer sorbet as an alternative to ice cream for people with milk allergy? Pensioner deal really tasty. Was able to swap soup for.mushy peas. Was offered a chocolate biscuit as an option for dessert and given a 2 finger kit kat?

It was my second visit in a little over a month. The first time I came here was with friends and we thoroughly enjoyed it. I decided to bring my family this time and they were as impressed as me as I was on my first visit. My little daughter loved her fish and chips. Ordered three different types of items from the menu which you'd be able to see from the pictures and the receipt. Plenty of parking around which is always a plus. Just had to wait at the door as literally there was no one for nearly 5 minutes to serve us. Anyhow once inside it was all good from the service to the food and the finishing. Definitely worth the price and the quality. I would highly recommend this place and can honestly say it's 10 times better than Thomsons on A64.

Another fantastic haddock and chips at the York Wetherby Whaler. Generous portions, attentive and efficient staff and a happy, relaxed atmosphere. Worth every penny, value for money. Always eat here when we’re in York.

I go several times a week for coffee or ice cream depending on the season. Great for people/dog watching.

My last visit to the York branch of the Wetherby Whaler was in 2017. Today gave me the opportunity to re live my experience but sadly it wasn't to be. To get straight to the point after ordering my Haddock and chips with a side serving of Mushy peas they arrived on my table. The fish was small and thin, no chunks, batter was smooth and dark brown, not golden and the mushy peas were good although at £2.50 they needed to be. The oval plate that the meal was served was small and only just held the fish and chips. The serving of chips was small and contained a 50% quantity of small sharp and hard chips which I couldn't eat. The restaurant itself appeared dreary and neglected but the staff were polite. Unfortunately for me a couple of hours after leaving the restaurant I got the after taste of old cooking fat which I rarely get with my regular fish and chips. All in all the management need to have a re think. Provide a value for money and quality fish and chip meal at a fair price to it's customers or lose them to it's competitors because they haven't done in this case.......

Just had takeaway and it was awful. It was cold very few edible chips and the fish not much to speak of and soggy.

The staff here are well trained, always occupied, and know exactly what they're doing. A rare quality in the hospitality industry these days. And the food? That was excellent as well. This is a very well run business, and will be going straight on our list of regular lunch venues.

I brought a coach party today on the return from a pilgrimage to Whitby. Despite us being delayed in traffic, staff were very gracious and we were so impressed by the professional way in which they dealt with a large coach party with friendly and efficient service. The food was delicious too. Thank you Weatherby Whaler, York, for a perfect end to a lovely day.

The staff were the highlight. Very polite. The fish batter seemed to be too dark, and the fish was a little mushy and not as meaty as you'd expect from the WW. Chips were nice. Never much of an atmosphere in a sit-down chippy, usually full of OAPs grabbing their discounted specials.

Twice I have had fish and chips both times very small portions fish very small not good value at all. Used to be great but would not recommend now at all

Stopped on our way back to Scotland from York. Greeted with an unpleasant manner by a young lady with pleated hair. No welcome, no smile. Waitress seemed friendlier, ordered fish, chips and salad to share with my husband as he has recently had major surgery so he can’t eat large amounts. Our friend also ordered fish and chips. Told we could not share food so we ordered my husband a piece of fish and were given a portion of peas to replace chips. The food arrived quickly. My 8 chips were a JOKE, soggy, limp and clearly heated up. The fish was small and swimming in grease. The salad was not worth the extra money either. The mug was dirty. Cheesecake to go…almost £7!!! Whole meal cost £50. Disappointing and a rip off for what was served. Come up to Scotland so we can show you a proper fish supper including lots of crispy chips and a big piece of freshly battered haddock, freshly caught that day. We will also let you share it because it’s too much for one person!

Just driving by and could smell the fish & chips so swerved in and what a find! fish was fresh and almost swimming! chips were just as I like them soft in the middle and crispy on the outside, mushy peas were tinned, I think but very nice. staff were bob on. Going back soon.

Was hopeful as they advertised gluten free fish and chips and although had debated after previous disappointment with gf fish, decided to give it a go. However when served, the food was disappointing given the portion of fish was at least 33% smaller then the same non GF offering of a standard portion of fish others people I'm my party has, and I was paying a £2 supplement for the privilege of a GF option. And the actual batter on the fish was a disappointment which was flat and unappealing and so much less appetising than I've made myself at home. In all, a disappointment, and not something I'd care to repeat if this is the best they can do for GF fish and chips.

Love the new outside space... and the update to the takeaway shop. Have not been in the restaurant..so don't know if that has been done. But will be back to see😉

Friendly staff. Portion control needs to be more only a handful of chips with the chicken breast and for 11.00 I'd expect a few more. We had dessert and was disappointed with the custard as its powdered custard and for over 6.00 I'd expect proper custard a bit of a let down.

I know this place is very popular but I was disappointed. We waited a while before seating and then the staff seemed pre occupied and not very approachable or particularly friendly. The only vegan option was an aubergine bake. For £15 it was nice but didn't compare in size to the huge portions of fish and chips coming out of the kitchen. The children were given colouring in to do and a toy when we left. This was very thoughtful. Maybe a good place to eat for fish and chips but not for us vegans. I will not be returning for that reason.

Just had GF haddock and chips. Maybe the worst I've had here in over 18months. Th batter was thicker than usual the chips many were hard and end bits and many were blackish.plus the whole meal was cool despite Collecting my order in the time slot ordered. So disappointed as in the past the standard had beeb much higher.

Called in Fri dinner time 7 June 24 for a takeaway. We got them wrapped to take home. We don't often have fish and chips and when we do we only use anyone of three chippies . We've liked the consistency of all three over the years. Today, was not even near what I had I anticipated .The fish was a decent size, but alas the batter was crispy on the outside and uncooked white paste on the inside. The fish itself was lovely The chips, I have searched back 60 yrs into my memory and whether I have eaten anything as bad, no. Every single chip had potato skin on them. They were chewy and tasteless, small bits and sharp hard pieces. We parted the fish from the batter and throw the rest away. I was very close to taking them back, I just won't be going back again.

Just shared a take away with my other half. Large haddock was lovely, nice fish and crisp batter. Sadly the same cannot be said of the chips. Barely edible, I think they were yesterday’s warm ups. Just throw them away rather than spoiling someone’s meal. We have thrown them out for you. Total cost £13.05 fish was good, chips a rip off.

Stopped off for takeaway at lunchtime, ended up with additional food but there wasn't a check through of the order so didn't realise until we drove away (additional £8.80!) chips were full of black and disappointing. Normally love Wetherby whaler but this experience was really below par - will return to the actual Wetherby store from now on!

Always had good fish and chips at Wetherby WhalerYork, but today they were exceptional, the fish flakes were pure white and moist, the batter was golden, dry and crisp. Excellent service, highly recommend with confidence.

The reason why give it 4 stars out of 5 is because it is so hard to find. Also, there is no signs either to help people find it.

The new self-service ordering is a gimmick and so stupidly set up when ordering it’s frustrating as hell. Ordered 2 fish and chips, you have to add scraps as an extra and then add the quantity for those scraps. So we put in x1 for scraps which meant only one fish and chips to have scraps. When we took the order, both sets of fish and chips came with scraps which kinda shows they can’t follow instructions at all! What a bunch of muppets!!

Brought up on Fish and Chips (parents ran two fish and chip shops for over twenty years) and been eating them across the UK for nearly 55 years. So this restaurant was average too me for several reasons: Portion size of regular haddock was smaller than typical experience; mushy peas not authentic in my experience a strange luminous green; batter around fish was slightly crispy which you want but fish not drained enough so a very greasy after taste; cleanliness not the best (bits of batter on seats and carpets need a good wash through too); Ice cream choice was limited to whipped soft from a machine so virtually all desert options off the order potential (need a proper ice cream choice even if it is just vanilla to make dessert offerings more appealing. The only saving grace to me was the staff were attentive and helpful, although I would recommend giving a little more time for guests to eat at least half the meal before asking if everything was ok. You try things once and in my experience this was the once for the weather by Whaler brand….

Absolutely lovely haddock and chips. Very attentive, polite and friendly service from Jules. That young man shines at customer service and is a credit to this establishment. Highly recommended.

First time visiting here,I used the takeaway part and I can honestly say that the service was spot on! All the staff including the very friendly server guy was fab! had an all round lovely experience! Very efficient and clean! And will defo recommend and will now be my regular chippy as the fish and chips was by far the best I’ve had!

Excellent fayre with very good service in clean surroundings. Whilst the décor may be a little dated and lean towards a certain age group, don't let is put you off having a magnificent meal at a very reasonable price.

Good value seniors special and lovely staff.

I've been a takeaway customer for years and the food is usually ok. Visited today. The lad on the counter was rude to the point of nearly being offensive. I also threw the fish away. It hadn't come straight out of the fryer and God knows how long it had been in the cabinet but it was rock hard!. Looks like it's currently having a refurb but the money would be better spent on staff training.

We decided to order click and collect takeaway from here as we’ve had a few rubbish chippies recently and thought the standard here would be better with it also being a restaurant. The food didn’t disappoint. The scampi was crispy and light, the chips delicious and my other half really liked that you could choose your thickness of batter on the haddock. The portions were also really good sizes without being over faced. Click and collect was also really easily and we only had to wait a few minutes on arriving for our order. We’ll definitely be back for our next chippy tea!

Took 9 friends from Durham. Table prebooked but not ready. A smile and a polite apology would have been fine but we were asked abruptly to wait outside as they had been busy and it couldn’t be helped that the table wasn’t ready. Service was fine but the food not as good as it used to be when this was the best fish and chips around. Senior citizen option now smaller, smaller plate, smaller fish, fewer chips no bread and butter and smaller ice cream but bigger price. And rather than appreciating the extra custom they slapped on a 10% surcharge. No longer outstanding in quality either. Good but no longer better than the average. Not the experience I expect when spending £175 and won’t be back on a hurry. Locally Thompson’s, Millers and Drakes better value now.

Building being renovated so was served through a window Chips were nice but you can't get to the salt and vinegar I like loads on please let us put our own condiments on your doing every thing else right

I’m thoroughly disappointed by the food service and price. I stopped in here for a quick meal with my family I went to the takeaway counter and got greeted by the rudest man in York he was unapproachable and unhygienic. He put half a table spoon of cheese on my sisters chips which he served with his hand after taking payment of £3.25 extra for a sprinkle of that of cheese if that. The curry sauce was like yellow watery and tasteless thank god there were two big red bins outside because they got chucked straight in there. Avoid at all costs. Disgusting. Should get shut down

Along with my wife, we visited the restaurant at tea time Wednesday 20th March. We had seen the restaurant whilst driving past to a nearby hotel. We were politely shown to a table and served by a mature gentleman with a beard who made our visit very enjoyable. My wife and I both had the Seniors meal. The meal arrived and appeared freshly cooked, it was very tasty and ample. Then followed a sweet which again was delightful. Overall, the food was delightful and service excellent.

Today’s outing was to York so we called at The Wetherby Whaler for lunch on the way back. This is a fish & chip restaurant with several branches in nearby towns, but it was our first visit. There was lots of different options on the menu but we all picked haddock - one large one, and two regular size, with chips, mushy peas and I had coleslaw. The fish was excellent, very white and fresh unlike what a previous reviewer has written. There were plenty of chips, and generous portions of mushy peas too. Hot drinks are included in the price, and we all enjoyed our lunch very much.

Quality Rubbish now What’s happened to the nice thick white fresh haddock you used to serve Went yesterday and it was tasteless off white. Maybe I’m wrong but I would say frozen not fresh Very overpriced now will be looking for somewhere else

Always love coming here. First class fish, chips, mushy peas etc for lunch. Superb service by the restaurant staff. It wasn't very busy the day we visited, very popular with the "older" generation, (includes us). The set meal is super value. There is a popular basic Chippie attached if you just want a takeaway.

Great fish and chips and mushy peas we usually get the pensioner's choice as it's three courses, it fills me so that's one good thing, but they are fresh straight out of the pan. And they are the best in the area a lot of people will say that they prefer Thompson's on York road (A64) we used to go there but we prefer wetherby whaler 🐳.
