Beautiful place and the food is excellent, especially the jacket potatoes.

The pulled pork sandwich (£4) and the cream of mushroom chicken pie (£2.5) are both to die for! I also appreciate that they provided an extensive list of ingredients for each sandwich. However, I was disappointed to find that rapeseed oil is used in the sandwiches. If you're not aware of how harmful rapeseed oil can be, I recommend looking it up.

Fantastic lamb mixed mint flavor

Classic British cafe/bakery with THE BEST battenberg I've EVER TASTED! Honestly, it should win awards. The alternating sponge cubes actually have noticeably different flavours, they use raspberry (or maybe strawberry) jam to stick the sponge together, instead of gross apricot or even grosser buttercream, and it's all surrounded with a hefty slab of marzipan. 11/10

The sign in the front says it all: probably the best sandwiches in the entire world. I come here often, all the flavors are great. My favorite is the new york pastrami, definitely recommend!

Browns have brilliant selection of cold, fresh sandwiches, do a good sausage and bacon Butty and have a fine selection of pies and sausage rolls. (the meat and potato has been the best I’ve tasted around York) There’s something for everyone!

Definitely worth a trip to Heslington to look at the gorgeous cottages and have lunch at Brown's. We had the vegan sandwiches, but there are plenty of options for vegetarians, pescatarians and meat eaters. The jacket potato options looked good too. Very friendly staff and a lovely setting.

Lots of choices of homemade sandwiches in decent sized chunks of baguette. Very tasty. I can recommend the lamb and mint sauce. Lots of fresh biscuit and cake products too. Best sandwiches in York.

Some lovely sandwiches — especially the mint and lamb is worth trying. If you’re after something healthy or vegan 🌱 you’re in the wrong place though. It’s changed quite a bit over the years but their sandwiches are remarkably consistent over the past 12 years that I’ve gone to get them :)

Best sandwiches in the universe

I've been coming here for years and its always been very good. Its basically a sandwich shop but when I say sandwich you get a baguette type thing with a good amount of proper filling (i.e. it'll actually fill you up). They also sell things like pasties, sausage rolls, cakes and stuff, and its properly home made. Prices are OK, its about £3 for a sandwich but they're a good size. My only slight criticism would be that you cant pay by card, but in fairness to them it is a small business and there is a cashpoint at the bank just down the road so not really a problem.

I had been to this bakery every day I was working in York. The pies, pasties and rolls are always hot and fresh. The sandwiches are also fresh that day too. As well as sweet treats, I'm sure many locals would say a bakery of perfection. Best time for availability would be anytime before 11:30am. After this time you be disappointed to find your favourites already sold, not to say your eyes will not be caught by another product, for sure! The interior is qaint. Mystic one might say. With being from the bussling city of Manchester, its not very often I stumble across such a place. The staff are very friendly and the bakery is very fair priced. I would visit again indefinetly when next visiting/working in York. Well worth checking out!

£3 fresh sandwiches is an amazing lunch, you can get a decent meal for £5. The Main Street is a lovely spot to walk around and have a little lunch. As a student at the uni it is very convenient :)

We have been getting hot & cold sandwiches, jacket spuds with amazing fillings, sausage rolls, pork pies (chilli jam my favourite) freshly baked bread, cakes, the list goes on!! The staff are very friendly & helpful & if you can’t find the sandwich you want, just ask and if possible they will make it for you! It gets very, very busy at lunchtime as it’s very popular! Love this place!

I visited here for a Beef Salad Sandwich on Saturday Lunchtime. Great Sandwich which was very tasty. Well worth it for £3!

I called off for a cup of tea and a piece of cake on a very long bike ride. The cake was fine, but this is a tea shop where you have to use a machine to get your tea in a paper cup. Tea from a machine is always disgusting so I didn't bother. Avoid like the plague.

I popped in here a few days ago as I needed lunch on the go- sandwiches great but have to agree with other reviews staff are RUDE, no CUSTOMER SERVICE at all, walked out feeling like I'd been an inconvenience ! It's not rocket science to break a smile or a "thanks" will do!

This is a place to avoid. The clueless proprietors provide a wide range of rewrapped sandwiches, all of which are dripping with cheap coleslaw - whether you want it or not. Trying to find an unspoiled sandwich is a futile task here. Add to that a shamefully low rating for hygiene and you'll be well advised to find the nearest petrol station to get something edible.

Quick service, fresh/large sandwiches. Raved about by many of the local students. A little off the beaten track but worth a few minutes walk (next to the Charles pub and Natwest bank).

Agreed to meet a family member for a quick lunch we arrived and were blown away by the options inside this place. It looks small from the outside but you name it they seem to have most of it in there. Very reasonable priced and with a few indoor and outdoor seats it makes for a very enjoyable lunch.

Have gone here with friends and alone. Good variety of sandwiches for reasonable prices. The lamb and mint sandwiches and the bacon/sausage butty are some of the delights this place has to offer. Location is a few minutes walk away from the university. Though they only take cash, there is a bank machine nearby.

Everyone must try the sandwiches here - they are to die for! There is a wide variety of flavours, we especially love the spicy chicken and jalapeno and the spanish chicken and chorizo. The flavours change by day so there is always something new to try. The service is ALWAYS friendly, especially one member of staff (Sue). We visit often and will not stop - definitely worth a try!

A few of us often go here for lunch and the food is always lovely.. However I am shocked at how rude some of the staff ALWAYS are. What happened to customer service with a smile and since when did it be ok to be so rude to your customers?

I have stopped here for sandwiches and pastries several times and it is always busy. It is not surprising as the food is great (especially the hot breakfast sandwiches - I had sausage) and the portions are massive. I have a healthy appetite but the breakfast sandwich filled me up until tea time. You could spend ages in here as the shelves are also lined with high quality local foods which I have never had time to properly look through as I am always just nipping in for breakfast or lunch. I hope to go in with a bit more time in the near future! I would highly recommend this place.

After passing this shop regular I decided to pop in for a sandwich, really good choice and they all looked delicious... What a disappointment , it was made up of lettuce and nearly £3 ... It's not Harrods although I think the staff thought they was in there, so rude and how dare they look down their noses at people the way they do... Only work in a sarnie shop for god sake !!!Will not be returning

What a great find this is, once you fought through the mass of students from the near by university. Great food, not cheap, but there's nothing worth having that is. Well maybe love. But is love truly cheap? Not in my house. Recommend the sausage & bacon sandwich, frazzle and ginger beer combo. Magnificent.

For starters the actual building itself is beautiful as well as the village that surrounds it, the staff are always friendly and helpful but most importantly every single item of food sold in that place seems to have been made by God himself and if you arent religious then prepare to be converted and consider Browns your church, give us this day our daily jacket, and deliver us our steak and red wine, as we forgive those who walk straight to the pasty aisle, and give into chicken tikka pasty temptation. Popped into browns after a hard days work on the university campus. My colleagues had stumbled upon this place by accident the day before due to getting lost. Had the reggae reggae sausage sandwich and a chilli jam pork pie will definatly be visiting again when in the area

I've visted Browns on several occasions to purchase a sandwich, and they are excellent and pretty good value also.

I was told the sandwiches here are 'the best sandwiches in the world', which is the reputation Browns is known for by most of the students at the University of York. Every sandwich I have bought from has certainly lived up to my high expectations. I recommend the turkey and cream cheese; this sandwich is something magical.

Maybe not the world but certainly very, very good. Expensive for a daily shop perhaps but definitely worth a special trip for the sandwiches.

A few years ago my wife and I were in Browns the way the girl on the till spoke to the foreign young man in front of us was disgusting - leading to a complaint {in person} from us - I was in yesterday it seems things havn't changed much - I have no complaints with the food {bit on the expensive side} - the staff --- TRAINING - REPLACE or employ people that are naturally friendly

Brown's of Heslington really do the best sandwiches in the world. They also do lots of other delicious things, baked potatoes with every kind of filling, cakes, breads and deli stuff. Sandwiches and other lunch goodies are good value; the rest may be a bit expensive for students.

I came in here for a toasted sandwich and a drink and at nearly £8 through it was expensive for what you got. They did do other options and it was extremely busy

I studied at York. I graduated 20 years ago, and all this time I've missed the sandwiches from Browns. I had one today, the lamb and mint one, it hasn't changed and I am soooooo glad. You're only ever likely to go here if you study at York, but it should be on your list of reasons to do just that!

Amazing sandwiches that will keep you going all day. They also do baked pots and other tasty lunch time treats. There is a nice range of deli food and there is bound to be something to please every taste.
