What a great pub?! Just opposite the pig and close to the bus stop, right on the corner. Outside seating, not vast at the front and not sure if there was any at the back. Big bar and plenty of places to sit for various size of group, great place for social gatherings. I noted that they hire out the entire pub and rooms of anybody wants. They are advertising the New Year 60's night already. I enjoyed a nice glass of white wine and my partner a local Flowers pint which he also enjoyed. Really great selection of ciders and beers, local and wider. I will certainly be going back when I'm next in Winchester.

Another great stay at the Winchester. Came with my husband and timed it just right for tapas night. Food was amazing and staff couldn't have been more welcoming. I believe they do quite a few themed nights and their next one is French cuisine. If we didn't live so far away we'd be back for that. Would definitely recommend The Westgate for a stay whilst visiting Winchester or to dine out. We are looking forward to coming back again soon .

Popped into the Westgate to cheer up a mate who has been really unwell recently, and left feeling rather upset and to be honest quite angry. Our food took almost an hour to arrive despite the place being empty (thinking back now that should’ve been a red flag given it was lunchtime!) and when it arrive it was somehow burnt but cold! The food was sent back and we expected a recook, however the same food was sent back out but just reheated! We asked to speak to the manager. The manager (gave his name as ‘Ben’) eventually came over after he had finished flirting with one of his female waitresses and couldn’t have cared less to be honest. Explained the situation and why we had come out for some lunch and started off his response, and it was a response rather than apology by saying that my friends illness wasn’t his problem and flat out lied to us that the food returned was a recook. We asked for a refund and said we’d go elsewhere and he flat out refused instead offering us 10% off next time. This was not good enough and we said we wouldn’t be back anytime soon at which point he got really angry and started to spit a little bit when he spoke angrily to say we were lucky to be getting the 10% off at all. Pretty sure he called us idiots as he returned to his female waitress ‘friend’ stationed at the end of the bar after we reluctantly paid our bill and were putting on our coats. I understand people have bad days in hospitality as I used to work in the industry myself but this was bad.

Popped in on a freezing cold Sunday afternoon and were served by a very welcoming barman and sat by a lovely warm fire. The pub is located and accessed on a corner and the bar stretches from left to right. The wood flooring gently slopes up to the left. Nicely decorated with character and I believe rooms are also available.

My husband and I plan a visit to Winchester for a little get away while we still can to see the market. It was not as big as we were expecting but we made the most of our time and walked around all that Winchester has to offer. We were keen to see the site of the round table by the great hall right at the top of the big hill in the centre and decided to pop in to the next closest place for some lunch and we went to the Westgate. We were met by some lovely smiles from the brilliant bar ladies, upgraded our plan of coffees to large gins instead! One lady (ponytail and glasses, sorry I don't remember her name) was kind enough to fix us a table right away and brought us some menus. The print is a little small for my eye so the landlady helped us through and we settled on some yummy fish finger sandwiches. It's such a beautiful old building bursting with history, I asked the landlady about the well in the ladies toilet and she stay with us a few minutes and told us the history of Westgate Castle and a few facts about the town. We are part of a heritage tour group so we love to learn about these things. Is was a little busy when we were there so the few minutes of undivided attention was greatly appreciated. I'm not one for online reviews usually but this time we had something to say! We are looking forward to booking to come back in May to come back and stay in one of the rooms Upstairs too.

On Saturday 23rd Oct I ordered a Korean chicken burger with fried chicken, gem lettuce, kimchi and jalapenos, but what I got in my burger instead of the kimchi was coleslaw with chili sauce, which is not kimchi at all. The lettuce was nowhere to be found either. My friends also got burgers, which came with a side of coleslaw and chips. After bringing us the dishes and just before shooting off, the waitress asked if we wanted cutlery. I wonder how else she thought we were going to eat the coleslaw? The chips were tasty, but overall it was a very disappointing experience, as I was really looking forward to having the kimchi, it really stood out for me on the menu. I hope that the other dishes correspond to the menu description but I won't be going there again to check.

Nothing beats a pub lunch on a work day….am I right? Luckily for me, this pub is a short walk from my office location when I work in Winchester and, at the top of the High Street, is also only a short walk from the medieval gateway after which it was named. The Westgate is a medium sized pub, and is busy at lunchtimes, but my dining companion (DC) and I didn’t have much trouble in getting a seat. We ordered from the lunch menu. You need to go up to the bar to order, which was busy when I tried and, with only one member of staff serving, took quite some time. DC and I both ordered the club sandwich, with chips, and a serving of hummus on the side. The food took a fair time to arrive, but as I mentioned, it was busy. As is now common with a lot of eateries, our food was served on a wooden platter topped with paper. As our food was something you would generally pick up to eat, I wasn’t as offended by this as I might otherwise have been as there was little chance of getting shredded paper in my food. The sandwiches are three slices of bread, as you would expect from a club but, due to the lack of filling to the edges, this seems too much and both DC ad I pulled a lot of it away. The filling, in the parts of the sandwich it exists, is a nice mixture of egg, bacon, lettuce, chicken and tomato, although the chicken could do with some more seasoning to make it stand out as a taste of its own, rather than a filler. The sandwich also comes with a serving of salad on top, which is a refreshing mix of undressed salad leaves. The hummus is in the section of the menu described as ‘small plates’, and was a very small serving. In my opinion, it did not have enough tahini in it to give it a full rounded flavour, and was somewhat less acidic that I would have expected. The bread it was served with, however, was absolutely delicious with a good chew and a nice flavour addition of cumin seeds. The chips were exactly what you would expect, nice and fluffy on the inside, with a well seasoned crispy outer crust. I would definitely return to the Westgate for lunch, but would perhaps try to go a little earlier or ring in an order in an attempt to save some time as I do not like the ‘dine and dash’ feeling of being rushed. I think I would try another menu item next time also, to save myself from having to pull it apart to find the best bits. Pricing is fair, with a large lunch costing just £24.70 for two people. Atmosphere is lovely, on the say we went the fires were lit and it was very cosy without feeling cramped or stuffy. Service was fine, but slow as they were busy.

Negatives were the leaking shower head which meant that the flow out was much reduced; there was nowhere to hang drying towels in the bathroom (a hook & a towel rail used to be in there but had been removed and presumably are waiting repair; shelf over sink is also awaiting repair; there was some noise from the kitchen's extractor fan (from 07.00 until they closed down at night).

In particular, there is a member of staff that has the worst attitude! It would be funny if you weren’t trying to actually get things done like being served, having a knife and fork, getting any condiments!! People were eating salad with their fingers today presumably because they too were not getting anything resembling manners or service! Needless to say, think we’ll just walk a few steps further and head to the St James Tavern where all the staff are very helpful and the food is excellent. Lesson learnt- stop being lazy!

The roast beef sandwich was mine - a generous amount of tender, rare beef in fresh bread sliced from a loaf, some hot horseradish and a little side of fresh salad leaves. Perfect. I received a reminder email on the morning of the booking saying that the Westgate was looking forward to seeing us. When we got there the staff turned us away saying that 'they don't use the online booking system near Xmas'. I wasn't told this and it was extremely inconvenient as we then had to walk 2 prams around the city looking for an alternative place to eat which took a long time with crying children. Very disappointed and angry about this. In fairness the lady who talked to me did have the good grace to seem embarrassed and sorry but it doesn't make up for it.

We were very lucky and had the last roast pork and last three apple crumbles but the chocolate pot had already run out by that time...

Admittedly we did come in for a drink the same day as a power outage however that is no excuse for the service we experienced.

Went there for a quiet drink with two friends on a Saturday evening and arrive just before 11, asked what time they finish and confirmed that they where closing at 12. Ordered a drink each and took a seat, my friends cranberry and vodka tasted as though it was just cranberry juice so asked at the bar if he had put a 25ml serving of vodka in the drink. This is where the tall male bartender became very aggressive and started calling us liars and ordered us to leave the pub, he became threatening towards all three of us when we said we would finish our drink and leave and continued to come over to our table. The bartender confirmed her was the manager and said we needed to get out after just asking a simple question. I have never received such threatening and horrible service from an bar before and wish to know if the bar staff was in a position to ask us to leave the pub. DISGUSTING SERVICE. Much nicer warmer pubs all over Winchester!!!

I decided to visit this restaurant with colleagues for a working lunch. The menu looked interesting, if a little on the high side for a lunch. However we decided to give it a try. We wished we had not and will not be returning. To start with when we tried to order off the menu there were items that they did not have: this included a basic staple, cheese. The food when it arrived was very, very average and the fish and chips extremely poor quality and value for money. Drinks were fine. The service was functional and demonstrated no interest in customers. If you are looking for a good quality lunch walk up or down the hill.

My partner and I were in Winchester for history weekend and we had walked past The Westgate a couple of times. We were drawn in by the A board breakfast menu which sounded different from just the usual breakfast choices. We weren't disappointed!! My partner and i both had smashed avocado on sourdough toast with mild chillies, red onion, and a choice of added poached eggs or bacon. It was so delicious. I add that my partner usually has normal English breakfast but he loved this choice as much as me. While we were there we accessed their website which was very positive and reflective of what we were witnessing . all clean very friendly and great food too. we will definitely be back there again!!

Want to love this pub as it's local to home and work but the team are struggling to make a good impression. Visited for drinks and had difficulty ordering a very simple round not to mention a fellow customer who asked for a drink they were not aware of (the customer was very embarrassed and it was not picked up on or apologised for their lack of basic bar knowledge)

Went in today for a quick beer after shopping, but wish I hadn't. Although really nicely refurbished, it was clear the staff didn't want to be working and were quite clear we had disturbed them playing on their phones.

Me and a friend have just finished a lovely lunch at this pub. It was perfect for the Friday afternoon, a nice air conditioned escape from the sun with great food and wine. A very friendly young lad served us who was doing everything on his own but still managed to find time to chat to us and make us feel welcome. Would recommend this place for the food and attentive staff.

Visited for a liquid refreshment there was five of us . Not one of us could finish our drink sorry the person drinking a soft drink could . The lager was flat as a pancake , it didn't even improve when poured in to another glass . The real ale the Green jacket looked like mud , as we where in Winchester for the Green jackets reunion that's why we brought it . When explaining to the bar staff why we were not drinking we got rudely told not to moan .the other pubs where packed . And this establishment had a handful of customers in .when I say the town was busy I mean busy there where about a thousand people at the reunion . I wouldn't normally write a bad review but as I had no response of the email I sent I have

Friday night dinner with a group of friends. Food was exceptional - original use of quality ingredients. From making the booking right through to settling the bill, the staff couldn't have done more for us. Atmosphere is relaxed but efficient. Well done James and the team - we'll be back

The staff was very nice, patient and helpful. The pub is nice, the food is medium and took a while until it was served. The chocolate tarte was not my taste - I expected something totally different, which would have been served under this name on the continent. (Photo = crispy tofu)

We have visited the Westgate for the first time for many years, following their recent refurb. Our first impression was positive, noting the transformation of the premises - very tastefully done.

We came here rather late on a Friday night and were really pleasantly surprised. The menu wasn't vast, but the food was very good although I think the veggie option of crispy tofu could have had more flavour and thought put into it. The fish that my husband had was apparently excellent.

This pub has recently re-opened after refurbishment, and is very much now a gastro-pub (hence the 12.5% service charge automatically added to food orders).

The Westgate has just reopened after an extensive refurbishment. As we live just around the corner, we were keen to see what had been done with the place; and got the chance when family came down for lunch the Sunday it re-opened. The bar has been re-organised and is now lighter and more spacious, with smart grey paintwork, the ubiquitous mismatched dark brown chairs and tables, and 'quirky' pictures from pub central casting - all very pleasant, if not yet 'lived in'. The food service was settling down, with the roasts all very well done and good value (with the possible exception of the vegetarian main, which would have been rather a small salad without the 'addition' of a roast aubergine), but the puds a bit large and cold. Nice range of Belgian bottled beers and excellent local 'pots' on draught. Deserves to do well with visitors, local authority staff and about to be wedding guests (the register office is just across the road). May take a while to bed in as a local; but we'll be back (and already have been, for a drink).

The quirky layout of this pub is great, it seems to go on forever until you find the courtyard seating area. Pleasant decor, friendly staff and reasonable prices. This pub with rooms is across the road from The Great Hall, part of Winchester Castle and grounds and a few minutes from the station. We didn't eat when we stopped in but plenty of people did whilst we were there and it looked and smelt good.

We booked Sunday lunch with my sister and brother in law, we wanted to try the Chestnut Horse with the intention to book for Christmas. The starters were lovely but not to be said for the main course, my sister and I had the roast beef, the beef was cut thickly and the whole plate full was verging on cold, my sister order extra cauliflower cheese which arrived towards the end of her meal. We ordered puddings, my sisters came first, ice cream, and ours arrived half an hour later and was not fully as we ordered. The staff were very pleasant and apologetic. Such a shame for a lovely country pub.
