We had our family Xmas dinner there yesterday for the 1st time, and wow we can honestly say it was the best we have had so far. The atmosphere, the staff, the service was just brilliant. It was so lovely, we did not feel rushed and the way they had organised it so everyone did not have to wait for their meals was great. Food was delicious and the service was really good. They catered for my dietary requirements of gluten and dairy free really well too.

Excellent Christmas, we had a Christmas meal at the black dog, the service was spot on and carried out with friendly smiles and excellent timing. The meals were cooked from fresh with excellent ingredients and washed down with superb ales and wine. Merry Christmas to everybody at the black dog.

We had our team Christmas lunch today. The food was really lovely. We all had different dishes and all were good. Very good quality and home made - delicious. The staff are very friendly and the service was perfect.

Fabulous.. We had an on the night booking for a table for 2.. They accomadated us with no quibble or fuss, the service was great and the food was even better, I had the Chicken Diane, my partner had the beer battered fish and chips and we both had the warm chocolate bread and butter pudding... Just to die for.. Lovely atmosphere, great service, highly recommended and we will be back...!!

Had a meal Saturday evening, couldn't have wished for a better evening. Food, service, atmosphere excellent. Been there six or seven now and will back. Live in Warsash and well worth the journey. 😉

Organised a private event with the outside sheltered/ heated area. Staff were fantastic to deal with from booking through out. The area is perfectly warm, even with if cold/wet and suitable for the whole family, any age. They were so helpful with the small details (cake etc). Food was exceptional, out of 29 guests not a single moan or groan, hats off to the chefs. The Landlord has a great team around them, we will be back again soon. Thank you for making our evening as enjoyable as ever.

Have never been disappointed here. Have taken many friends and everyone has enjoyed. Back restaurant area can get noisy,but guess if there's a large group this can happen anywhere . You will need to book.

My wife and I both enjoyed a delicious Ploughmans Lunch here washed down with a glass of Inch's Cider. The staff are very friendly, the service and food are very good and it had a nice lunchtime atmosphere. It is easy to find and has a big car park, with a large garden.

A truly beautiful place, wonderful staff, food and drinks. Fully recommend, ho there, you won't be sorry.

We came here last minute after googling a local restaurant to where we were staying. They were more than happy to seat us without a booking. We had a lovely meal with very friendly staff Very much enjoyed by us all and very nice to feel we weren’t hurried out the door even tho we were the last to leave Thank you

Unfortunately we had a terrible visit, they are selling cheap store brought frozen fries and the lowest quality onions rings. The burger was terrible, small dried out buns. The meat i’m not sure if it’s homemade or not. The venue is really nice, but i’d suggest not eating here.

We visited the Black Dog as a family of three adults and a three year old child. The pub was very busy both inside and out, so booking in advance is recommended. Whilst we were seated quickly, unfortunately the rest of our experience fell way short of expected standards. The menu has enough on for all tastes and the plates are plentiful. I can't comment on what my wife and sister are, but I ordered the meat and potato pie. It was pleasant enough, however the gravy was incredibly watery. I wouldn't recommend. The main issue I have with our experience was the service we received. Clearly, the staff were busy however we were met with a curt tone at times and one young member of staff literally slammed our drinks down on the table and simply walked off. Once we were finished, we were sat at the table for approx. 15 mins without anyone clearing our plates. I completely understand again how busy the place was, so I simply caught the attention of one member of staff and requested the bill. This came and again we were left for another 20 minutes without anyone checking in that we needed a card machine. We made the decision to pay at the till, as my son was now becoming irritable. As I got to the till area I asked to settle our food bill, to which one very rude member of staff simply shrugged at me, then pointed to the main bar area (which was rammed) and said "no, go over there". I then queued for another 10 minutes to get served and then was asked if everything was ok as I was paying. I said unfortunately not, the service has been incredibly poor to which she simply said "sorry, we're under pressure". I've never been to a pub restaurant and made to then queue up at a busy bar to settle a food bill when there's table service, and it's been some time since I was made to feel so unwelcome at an establishment. I think there is an argument for the team to undergo so further training in customer service / hospitality so that next time they find themselves under pressure, they don't take it out on customers like myself and my family.

Came here to eat out with the extended family while staying nearby. Was a great experience, kind and attentive staff, delicious food of decent value, nice setting and good atmosphere, would recommend.

Fantastic meal with the most friendly service. We had Summer Chicken and Lasagne and both were homemade with fresh quality ingredients and so tasty. We both had totally clean plates at the end which speaks for itself. Service is friendly and efficient. All the staff are there to please and not just to earn a wage. Loved it and have already booked to return with friends. Thank you.

Once an excellent Pub for Sunday Lunch. Sadly it is no longer the case. The beef was very thin and tasteless. The vegetables were undercooked and tough to cut. I spoke to the waitress regarding the above... sorry I'll let the chef know. It seems to be the norm of late .. increase the price and reduce the amount and quality ...

Telling us to move chair we'd had to move cos of our dog who'd we'd precbooked a table for our large dog , then on a very hot day that our dog was not allowed a drink under the table even though she's highly trained cos the manager wouldn't be happy made us feel uncomfortable enough to rebook whilst at the black dog with an amazingly helpful accommodating pub x

Fantastic pub, we stumbled on this wonderful pub when we stayed at golf course the night before our cruise, wonderful staff helpful and friendly, we staying at golf course again later in the year for another cruise so will definitely be revisiting the black dog

Wow what an experience at the Black Dog. I rang ahead on Saturday to book for Sunday lunch as reviews raved about fantastic lunch and dog friendly too. I mentioned that we had a large lab sized dog and the table was booked. We arrived for our Sunday lunch and was greeted by the locals all huddled at the entrance with the tables arranged so they could all see the football on the tv. Once passed this obstruction i was shown to a small round table wedged between the gents and a door that said Private. The table had 3 chairs so i moved one chair slightly so my dog could lay partially under the table and in the new space created. I was then told the i had moved the chair in the way of the passage to the gents toilet so my wifed moved around to the large chair squeezed into the corner, i then took her seat that to me seemed to be blocking the entrace to the non dog dining area. I went outside to see if there was outside seating in the shade available but the lovely building out there said no dogs allowed. When i came back in with some water for my dog, bearing in mind it was 25° on this day we were told no bowls of water allowed as its carpeted and the owner doesn't allow it. So i would like to rate the lunch but with one swift phone to a pub 5 minutes away......come out of the car park turn left then right began with the word brick but naming no names we were greeted by a lovely lady showing us to a wonderful table and had a thoroughly lovely lunch

Visited this pub restaurant for the first time. The ales are good with 4 to choose from. Food is wholesome and of good quality. What you expect from a decent pub menu. Nothing to write home about but very reasonable. Good attentive service

Decent roast with nice meats, Yorkshire pudding and a healthy portion of gravy. Veg was a bit meek however and the roasties weren't roasted enough for my personal liking... Needed to be slightly more done. Nonetheless, a quality roast at not a bad price!

We went on a Friday evening and very pleased to see the bar and restaurant were busy. Staff gave a warm welcome and showed us to our table in the restaurant. Good selection from the main menu and some specials, I had the Scotch Egg starter from the specials and was good, the Whitebate was very good. The steaks were very good, I had the burger and in my opinion was a little dry, also the onion rings were not the best. We had a great evening with great service from all the staff. This is our second visit to the pub and we very much like it, would recommend to go.

We visited the Black Dog with family recently for lunch. The pub has a lovely rural country feel. Our food was quite good, without being exceptional as in past visits. My wife and I had the chicken with brie which was pretty good, but just came with a miniscule portion of chips and nothing else, my sister had the fish and chips, which didn't include peas, which both being cheap seemed rather lacking in our opinion. The service by our young waitress was good. All in all our visit was pretty good indeed, but left us feeling just a little disappointed.

Went to the Black Dog the evening of 14 April with friends and once again we had a wonderful evening with great food. So a huge THANKS to the Black Dog and the staff.

Its been the best day of spring stop off for lunch it best spot ever in the garden. Kids played on the swing and slide. Food was fab could not get a picture before was eaten

We stopped here on a Sunday noon and the place was filled with locals, which is a clear statement that the place is good. It was, nonetheless, their roasts are a must, I can vouch for them. Tried all three types, all were outstanding! Their local beer is great, as well as other beer options. Enjoy!

Both our kids meals (for example fish fingers and chips) did not include any greens. Never seen this with any other pubs children's meals. Usually you get a few peas, beans or whatever on the plate. Nothing. Just beigeness. Other than that it was fine waffles were lovely, just a strange omission, considering it's not a budget place to eat.

A visit for Sunday Lunch after a walk along the Meon Valley trail. Probably the most tenderness piece of beef I’ve ever tasted, plentiful vegetables and efficient service. A vibrant atmosphere for a Sunday Lunchtime

It's a nice place for a drink and meal. Staff were friendly enough. It seemed a bit rushed to close up kitchen which was a shame and despite closing time showing as 11pm, they shut at 10pm which meant we had to leave earlier and were not able to have a drink after our meal. Food is decent, and reasonably priced.

The Black Dog has become our go to “local”, even though it’s a short drive away. We enjoy the friendly atmosphere that the pub provides together with the superb food offerings. The menu is regularly updated with weekly specials. We own a dog and tend to eat in the bar area (dogs allowed). It’s important to us that our dog settles so as not to disturb other customers. It’s his favourite pub as well!! The staff are extremely welcoming and nothing is too much trouble. Thank you.

Nice little pub on main road Wickham to Bishops Waltham. Dog friendly inside bar area with good seating available . Shared a starter of whitebait then both of us had the steak burger and chips. Whitebait excellent. Burger very good but chips needed more cooking. Poor range of ales . Think it was Tribute and GK IPA. Plus one called Black Dog ( appropriately). Price wise quite expensive. Burger £15.75 I think and the basic ale £5-10. Thankfully had a 50% off main course voucher so burgers now a decent price!! Ale overpriced for what it was. But overall an enjoyable evening in a popular and appealing pub. Staff very friendly. A bonus.

Ah, Christmas Day, the season of joy, generosity, and, if you’re dining at The Black Dog, the unforgettable £85 roast dinner. Unfortunately, my experience was more ‘unforgettable’ in the way a clown at a funeral would be. Due to unforeseen circumstances, I couldn’t grace the establishment with my presence. Instead, the group I was meant to be with asked to box up and bring this culinary masterpiece back for me. Imagine my glee when I was presented with a portion so meager, it wouldn’t even suffice as a light snack for a famished squirrel. The presentation? Think abstract art, if the artist was a toddler in a temper tantrum. As a seasoned connoisseur of fine dining across the UK, I’ve seen my fair share of roast dinners. But this? This was a culinary catastrophe wrapped in a riddle, topped with a mystery. At the princely sum of £85, one might expect a feast fit for royalty. Instead, what I received was more akin to a jesters’ joke. I can’t help but chuckle in despair and extend a warm, hearty warning to fellow diners: at The Black Dog, your Christmas spirit might just turn into a ghost story. Bon appétit!

Staff attentive and pleasant, but food was dreadful. I ordered a Cheeseburger (see picture). Cheapest white bun, a thin cheap burger and a piece of processed cheese on top not even warmed up. No relish, no salad absolutely dreadful. Told the waitress but did not make a fuss as didn’t want to spoil lunch out with my 93 year old mother.

Wonderful food served by welcoming and friendly staff. Would recommend the roast beef Sunday. It was tender tasty. Perfection on a plate.

A cosy village pub on the outskirts of Waltham chase. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. The food is good, a little expensive for what it is perhaps but it was made up for by the staff’s warm hospitality.

3 of us went here for a birthday meal for my dad. Service was first class, food was delicious and plenty of it. We had a lovely time. Will definately be returning.

Never had a bad meal always lots of lovely food on offer, great little pub with lovely friendly staff. We ordered the Sunday roast beef and wasn’t disappointed, it’s was so nice. Highly recommend this place and especially for their Sunday roasts !!
