The Coach & Horses in Winchester

I'd heard it had changed hands a year ago, and went based on new recommendation. So, we'd gone in there just after Christmas with family and it looked welcoming enough with decor made up, but needed to keep our coats on for a while until the bar area warmed up as the fire went out, with an empty log shack. Quickly became a full house, however, staff were attentive, and only 20 mins wait for food. I had a nut roast, with all the trimmings, and we were all happy with our meals, all very nicely cooked. Tip- if you go for a sunday roast or around bank holls, book well in advance. New Update - The manager has recently left to reventure into another local pub, taking his chef with him, so it is probably under interim management.

Great Pub. Tall gentleman running this afternoon was great and his service excellent. Meal was great and compliments to the chef. Sounds like a bit of adversary going on about the existence of this pub. Would not like to see such a local asset go. Hopefully you'll be around for many years yet. Sutton Scotney need to retain this local asset...

My lasagne was the worst I've ever had, looked and tasted like it had been stood 3 days.

I can only assume five star reviews are friends, I have gone here on and off for a drink as it’s close and convenient. It has never been a welcoming pub , furnishings are all dirty and in need of repair. Recent experience was the last straw, served raw chicken and the only offering was to take it off the bill or wait for a new one (it had taken over a hour to ‘cook’ the first). I addressed this directly in a message, promised a response directly from the manager but nothing has been forthcoming, this was 3 weeks ago now! Avoid!

Spot on again, really friendly pub, made to feel welcome the moment you walk in.Food is is very good with varied menu and nice portion size.Highly recommended.

We stopped here on the way to Cornwall for a family dinner. The food was exceptional. Wow, the pie! Thank you

A local place for local people, squeeze through the locals sat at bar stools to stand side on and awkwardly ask for a drink. Bonus points if you're female so they can all stare at you. Sit for food and expect long wait times, have a starter which takes best part of half hour to arrive. Wait for main, realise its been ages, you've been there 90 minutes now, main arrives...'everything is cooked fresh to order' the excuse is given, cut into the chicken burger to find it still clucking at you. Return it and ask for the bill to leave. Raw burgers removed from the bill but nothing else, long wait explained as 'well you did have a starter' from the land lord. You can ignore it if there for a drink, but you can't ignore the raw food and nonchalant attitude to food hygiene. Landlord seems fine if things are going well but overall not a high level of hospitality here.

On first impression the pub looked nice. However it soon changed. My dad asked for IPA, it was out of stock. Starters was approx 10 mins to arrive. We then waited 30 mins for mains to arrive. Then within a few minutes of asking for our meals they arrived. For dessert we asked for sticky toffee pudding then crumble these were both out of stock to. Disappointing experience

Met family for lunch. We were sat for our 12.30 booking in a cold part of the pub. Our drink order was taken, 3 of the 5 brought were wrong which was the first thing to go awry. Our food order was taken and then the waiting began. When starters were served they were mediocre, a notable point being the hot plate for the pate and salad leaves to sit wilting on! When we finished these we waited around 80 minutes for our roast dinners. Others patrons were also complaining about the length of time everything was taking with no update from the serving staff. The food items were not very hot nor very well cooked - undercooked parsnips for instance. We did not have pudding as we had already endured 3 hours. Although it was obviously popular we wouldn't return.

Our wonderful local, great good, warm & friendly staff. Haven’t used the rooms to be able comment.but hear they are very nice.

From the time we walked in to the time we left we had a warm friendly welcome and a lovely goodbye , a lovely lunch menu to choose from , the food was outstanding and at a very good price , a nice selection of puddings to choose from as well , this is a lovely place to go for lunch can’t say about a dinner menu as not tried that yet but 10 out of 10 from this customer

So we said to our friend Fag Ash Lill would you care to come out with us sometime for lunch. Cor blimey she said not Arf. My mate Flossy Bagwash said there’s a Banging Gaf in Sutton Scotney , with Banging Snap and Banging Wallop. ( that is Bagwash Speak for Happy Ambiance, Lovely Food and Fine Ales ) . Also , the staff are cheerful and attentive. The Landlord … Hmmmm Strange…Ho Hum… Recommend you give it a try folks, you’ll not be disappointed : or, as Flossy Bagwash would say, Sssweeet. Lovely pub with open fire 🔥. The staff and locals were very friendly and welcoming. They were great with our dogs. The food was beautiful and we were stuffed. 10/10 for everything. (Could you please get some steak knives) although my steak was wonderful.

We have been to this pub for a meal 4 times in the last year and have always found the food first rate at a fair price. But what stands out most is the service. The staff have always been very welcoming but last night despite being quite busy, I am sure the waitress was watching us so she could attend to our needs promptly. A quick nod from us and she was there at the table taking drinks order etc. Altogether a very pleasant evening.

Wife said let’s go somewhere Romantic and relaxing for dinner. Trouble is Sweetie , I said, we know of nowhere of that Calibre!!. Hrmm she said , well let’s give Dave’s gaff a tug it’s nice there. I said, @#&@, what again. Erm, well, I was wrong, And moi is a picky grump. Even detected a Whiff of romance!! . My wife said , best Pie and Mash she had ever had, . Harsh i thought as I consider myself self a Cook , Ho Hum. Superb Ale, and now in the good Beer Guide. Do sample it all it’s excellent…… Grump from Overton..

Had a great evening with friends. A very good menu and the food was excellent. There was a live band (Queen bee and the trappers)which everybody enjoyed and some danced to. A really good pub.

Visited for dinner with my 2 teenage boys. Good main course choices on the menu and the portions are very generous. Pub is close to the southbound services on the A34 so good for a stopover near Winchester

Delicious Beef Bourginon, Fish and Chips and Halloumi Burger, large portions. Friendly service. On a Friday night it was full and buzzing, but they took our order and delivered in good time.

We attended around 1830 on a Friday night as a family after travelling 10hrs and staying local was looking forward to a nice meal. We got grunted at by Cheryl on arrival have we booked we said no she gave us the only table she had it appeared as if we were an inconvenience for her took our order after 20 mins and grunted again it will be a while for food all orders have just went in for everyone else, turns out was only 20mins food was ok not great David who worked behind the bar was lovely and friendly and most importantly welcoming he served our foods and drink. Seems like a local pub for local people strange considering a few hotels locally.

Tried this place on the strength of the lunch menu, we wasn’t disappointed, lovely quaint place to go for lunch , very friendly staff , nice and clean and tidy , lunch menu was good , the portion sizes where incredible and very very tasty , and the puddings equally as good , for the price of the meal it was great value for money, would recommend this place , good idea to book as got busy a good sign , I should also add it was such a relaxing place to have lunch at a no rush pace

Lovely stay , visited for friends 50th birthday. Food wonderful and accommodation very good too :-) David is very accommodating and helpful. Will return again soon.

Lovely little pub, we stayed one night the rooms are basic but very clean. Landlord was very welcoming and informative. We ate dinner, very tasty home cooked food. Breakfast was the best we’ve had in a long time, this was included within the price of the room £120.

I hope the people of Sutton Scotney realise what an absolute jewel they have in their village. The Coach And Horses is like one of those pubs you read about but don't think actually exist anymore. The atmosphere couldn't be cozier, with exposed wooden beams, open fire giving a sense of history regular live music. It's the perfect place to enjoy a refreshing pint or a delicious meal. The menu is quite extensive with regular specials, but it never feels like a pretentious overpriced gastro pub. Simple honest wholesome food prepared with care and attention to detail is the order of the day. The staff are the real stars of the show, though. It's always a delight to go somewhere where the people who work there seem to enjoy eachother's company all whilst keeping everything running smoothly catering for a diverse range of local regulars and visiting customers. If you're traveling between Oxford and Southampton, this place is ideal for a visit.

Decent beer and good food in generous portions. Friendly and extremely helpful staff. Cheryl was most helpful in accommodating the timing of food servings to match some awkward constraints we were under. All in all excellent value and a very positive experience.

Met friends for lunch and catch up. Warmly welcomed by management , quickly served and seated. Chose from a relatively limited but adequate menu and enjoyed 4 very tasty meals ~ both mains and sweets. Good value, pleasant surroundings and easy parking. We will not hesitate to return.

We absolutely loved this pub. Food and staff were wonderful and made our evening truly enjoyable. The food was delicious with portion sizes being spot on. Not too tiny or grossly enormous. We were staying at the Days Inn on the Southbound A34 and discovered we could walk to the pub, through the trees, in 10 minutes - a real gem of a find and we will definitely return if visiting again.

The Coach & Horses fed my team of 25 people yesterday and did it amazingly 👏 The booking and pre-arrival discussions were easy. They took all of our varied dietary needs/requests into consideration and were unruffled by some last minute changes. Service was quick and friendly. Food was hot (where it should be) and servings were very generous. Thank you David, Cheryl and the rest of your team. We will be back

This is a fantastic bed and breakfast establishment, the owner David and his staff really looked after me , my sister and our disabled mum, nice size family room and fantastic food, highly recommended.

Great pub - excellent location, good beer and food - staff excellent. Just a bit cold at the moment.

Lovely little pub, we called in today on our way home for a bit of lunch. We didn't book, but it wasn't super busy, although there was one other big group there. This pub is dog friendly, which is nice. We both had the southern fried chicken wrap, which was very tasty and full of flavour, came with a very generous side salad and portion of fries as well. Was very filling, and presented nicely. Staff were very polite. We will return next time we are passing. The toilet facilities are also very clean and tidy, a nice touch with quality soap and hand moisturiser avaliable.

We had a wonderful proper pub lunch here. We met up with family and the staff were really accommodating, popping us in the corner room of the pub. The staff showed the children where they could get games and books. Staff were very friendly and the food was delicious, all four children enjoyed their choices from the kids menu, and the adults sandwiches were great. We will definitely visit again when next in the area.

We went for food and drinks on a whim whilst staying locally at the Norton Park Hotel. The service was second to none, friendly, attentive and accommodating. Would definitely recommend.

We discovered the Coach & Horses 18 months ago and have been there regularly ever since. It’s ok if you like good wholesome food, huge portions, friendly staff and landlord, good beer, etc. Shall I go on. Suffice to say, it’s all-round good 👍

This pub is an absolute treasure and nothing is too much trouble with David and brenda. We were so welcomed with such good hospitality and all our needs were met when it came to food and were even allowed things that weren't on the menu. Food was so exceptional. My friend and I really enjoyed our lunch at the Coach and Horses. The staff made us feel welcome and the service was swift and efficient. We both had really fresh sandwiches with salad but also decided to have a side order of macaroni cheese (well, it was a cold day!) which we ended up taking home as the portion was very generous. We look forward to returning to this friendly pub.

So my friend & I decided Sunday lunch was in order so we took a drive out to this pub & it did not disappoint. We arrived early ….ordered, the landlord concerned we’d be cold moved us from one area to another & brought a heater too. The food did not disappoint I had nut roast & my friend had the beef both came with roasties, gravy (veggie in my case), carrots & peas, cabbage & cauliflower cheese, all lovely presented & cooked beautifully. We had enough room for Crumble with custard which was really tasty. My dog didn’t miss out he got a decent bowl of beef off cuts which he thoroughly enjoyed. All reasonably priced too….as we left the pub was quite full of humans & dogs. This pub is extremely friendly, the staff go out of their way to make your visit memorable for all the right reasons nothing is too much trouble. I think the words out already but just in case it’s not go try it for yourselves you will not be disappointed thoroughly recommend.

Staff were so accommodating. Girlfriend car battery died and we walked in here, they didn't hesitate to allow us to plug it in and sit for a while. Couple of beers and some food and we were on our way. Can't fault them, lovely people and a lovely pub 👍👍

Dave and the team at The Coach and Horses looked after us really well today, when seven of our family ate lunch there. The service was friendly, the food was tasty and the prices were very reasonable. Well situated, in the centre of Sutton Scotney, The Coach and Horses offers a warm welcome to all visitors. I’d recommend it.

We stumbled across the coach and horses last December while renting an airbnb. We enjoyed our visit so much we booked the same airbnb just to visit the pub. The staff are all so friendly and the food is wonderful. Home cooked meals and great value for money. I'm sure we will be back again. Kelly

We went as a family for a Christmas meal, absolutely beautiful. It was beautifully cooked. Staff were the best, nothing to much trouble.

Lovely food. Wasn't too expensive. The wait wasn't too long either for a midday Saturday around Xmas time! Poor parking but not their fault so I wouldn't mark down

Reserved a table online earlier in the day for dinner when staying at a nearby hotel. Arrived to a warm welcome. Was seated near the fire and picked the sirloin steak from the menu, and the crumble with custard for pudding. I am not kidding when I say the steak was AMAZING! The best I’ve ever tasted. Seasoned and cooked perfectly. Enjoyed the salad it came with. The crumble was lovely too. The customer service was excellent, we were made to feel very welcome. This place has set the bar very high, if you’re debating going, I’d highly recommend. I just wish I lived closer so I could visit more often!

What a lovely evening we had, the staff made sure we had a great time, food was 5*, our special occasion celebration could not have been bettered, big thanks to the landlord Dave and his excellent staff.

We have eaten here many times in the past but today was our first Sunday lunch visit. It was excellent. All the staff are very pleasant and the landlord makes everyone feel very welcome which is lovely. Would strongly recommend. We will be back soon

Literally the best Sunday Roast we have had for a long time! Thick cuts of beef, Yorkshire, plenty of veg and cauliflower cheese. Friendly and welcoming staff and warming log fire. This place is amazing!

Just waited over an hour for food to be told you’re next, just plating it up & then food came out for people who’d come in half an hour after us! Again & again . I Don’t mind waiting but I don’t like being lied to. Left hungry & missed quality time with my son. Won’t be going back any time soon.

Popped on on the office chance on Saturday as we went to Stockbridge and found it too snobby and our usual place closed down. Had lovely Katsu Chicken and Chips and Scampi and Chips and some beers. Good Price and Excellent Service, certainly would go back if more local.

We had a fabulous dinner here last night with a friend from London. David and the team were as always welcoming, helpful and efficient. There were so many lovely choices on the menu it was difficult to choose, but the salmon with stirfry veg and the battered fish and chunky chips were amazing, leaving us too full to try many of the desserts but we did manage to share a white chocolate pannacotta which certainly lived up to expectations and more. this was restaurant quality food for sure.

What a fantastic experience. We were a group of 15 looking for a nourishing meal after a days cycling in the area. The food and drinks were excellent, management and staff did everything to ensure we were well looked after and we had a memorable evening. There was plenty of choice in the menu and everything was perfectly cooked and beautifully presented. We particularly enjoyed the candle lit atmosphere. A perfect night that more than compensated for a disappointing meal the previous night in a nearby spa hotel. Very highly recommended

Excellent quality food at a reasonable price served swiftly. This place was busy, even on a weds lunchtime and still we were served quickly. Will return.

Called in for an early tea after reading the reviews on here.. and couldn’t be anymore pleased that we did. We hadn’t booked but the lovely waitress found us a table straight away.. Friendly staff and locals, and the food was amazing, the Hunters Chicken...

A lovely pub in a delightful village. Excellent food and accommodation. Dave and his team couldn't have been more welcoming. Breakfast is continental with cereal, croissants, fresh bread, cheese and ham. Our room was clean and comfortable. Recommended!

We found this a very average pub. It was quite busy because most other pubs in the area are closed early in the week so it has a bit of a monopoly at lunchtime. Nothing bad to say other than they don't serve coffee with...
