Superb old coaching inn in the pretty town of Bishop's Waltham almost opposite the Palace Ruins great location for Winchester, Southampton and Portsmouth. The pub is beginning a huge renovation from the 20th October to 7th November which is much needed.

Loads of character inside with all of the old wooden beams and low ceilings. Would of liked to of tried the food but unfortunately I missed out because the kitchen had already closed after lunchtime. Yet another location for which the Google review can only handle it being a hotel **OR** a restaurant **OR** a pub. <sigh> I'm thinking we don't have too much to worry about AI taking over our lives just yet. For food, The Crown is a really excellent pub. The interior is sufficiently dark and gloomy with low ceilings to give it that authentic old boozer ambience, and yet they don't overfill the place with tables. There is an outside terrace at the back which is a suntrap in the summer, and the nearby road noise is screened nicely. The menu is pretty good, and gets away from the usual pub-grub enough to be interesting without going all Gordon Ramsay on you. Really 5-star food. But the really outstanding element at the Crown is the really positive attitude from the lads behind the bar. The cheerfulness and helpfulness of this gang is a real credit to the pub management (and the parents of the young men) and we feel this really was the icing on the cake. So 5-star service too! The pub is also dog-friendly (not just dog-tolerant but dog-friendly). The Crown is rapidly becoming our favourite pub for both drink and food: what's not to love?

A refreshing change from the standard square box hotel room you get with the big chain hotels. The floor slopes and ceiling is low. The is the old style bedstead design. I found it very comfortable. The bathroom was clean and adequate. I went out for supper with friends, I can't comment on the evening menu. Breakfast was delightful. Fresh warm croissants and fruit juice that had some flavour in it. I had the eggs florentine which was delicious. The staff were all friendly and helpful. I'll be staying again.

First the pub is steeped in history and feel like a real country pub in the heart of village. always feels warm and welcoming by the staff. Sunday roast trio is to die for if you can't choose what meat you want. As is eating out these days prices reflect the economy and so has become a treat for us.

I stayed here overnight whilst visiting friends. Firstly as a pub it ticked all the boxes, good beer and friendly staff. I ate dinner there and again appreciating it’s a pub that serves food, ate a most enjoyable meal from a good menu, served promptly and again by friendly staff. Finally I stayed the night. The room was a reasonable size, with a large bed and decent sized walk in shower with toiletries provided and would give a number of dedicated hotels I have stayed in a run for their money. The staff were extremely helpful and one who had just finished work even gave me a lift to the house of a late friend to attend the celebration of his life. (Taxis busy). I have mentioned “it’s a pub” as some reviewers have in my opinion written as if they were eating at a fine dining establishment and hotel. I would definitely recommend the crown to drink, eat and stay.

No vegan menu. I had to scan the QR code to look up what was in the food to see if it was vegan. However, before I could do that I had to register with the pub to gain access to the Internet in order for the link to work from the QR code! This is 2024! This is not service. Also very few choices. I chose a wrap with hummous and peppers, and that was it - not even a little lettuce leaf! The wrap was not even warmed, just tough and cold. Very poor.

Terrible service, very young uninterested staff, average food, sent one meal back, had to ask twice for drinks, no one asked if we wanted further drinks or desert. When mentioned staff member said he’d fetch the manager to discuss but he/she was so disinterested they didn’t even bother to come and talk to me, just knocked off 10%. Real shame, hundreds of nice pubs to eat in locally, wouldn’t recommend or return to the Crown again. Based on our experience avoid at all costs! 1/10. Nice cosy looking pub. We wanted to eat so we asked for a table in the restaurant section. Only 1 table was occupied but we were told without a reservation we could only sit in the bar area. Considering it was a Tuesday evening and the restaurant section was pretty much empty I thought it was odd but ok. Once we had chosen what we wanted to eat, we were then I informed 3 items on the very limited menu were out of stock. We ended up going for the chicken schnitzel and Caesar salad. This was a terrible choice. I’ve eaten a great many schnitzels and Caesar salads in many countries as I like both. However this was not a schnitzel but a whole breaded chicken breast. I guess nobody understood that a schnitzel is a thin piece of meat and not usually chicken either but again, ok, this was the best part of the plate. The salad…. how do I even say this… there were a few little gem leaves (I’d say 4-5), the tiniest drizzle of dressing, some limp bacon slices, a bit of grated cheese and two dry (or was it toasted?) baguette slices. The whole thing STANK and tasted like it had been pulled out of a fish entrails bucket. I love fish and I adore anchovies but this was not right. Yes, I am aware anchovies belong into a Caesar dressing. I have eaten a lot of Caesar salads before. Just use a jar from the supermarket if yours is gross. I’d honestly rather have that than your rank fish party. The chicken was a good size but the salad was tiny. For £16 I’d have expected a better size. 2 draught pints £12. No real cider selection - only Stowford on draught and Old Mout bottles.

Staff excellent, however!!! Prosecco was served at room temperature, replaced by staff, then new small bottle was slightly chilled and for a very small bottle £9.50.Now for the meal, I ordered ribeye steak at £22. Mushrooms cold, tomato not cooked, plate cold, staff apologised , replaced mushroom and tomato, again came out not cooked. Steak was fair but not good, as for what they call triple cooked chips, they are chewy and awful, the chef should hand the hat in!!!!My wife ordered steak and ale pie, pastry ok, gravy very thick, one vegetable which was underdone tough cabbage leaves. We complained and £15 was deducted from the bill. It’s such a shame lovely pub and staff very good, however it is all sadly let down by the awful food.

The question I have to ask is where is the general manager. A family member who works here booked a table for 7pm as it is Father’s Day. On entry we were told no Sunday lunches and the Main Chef is not on site just a trainee and an assistant. I have to say I cannot fault the staff who were all pleasant, helpful and very apologetic. The food delivered was sadly inedible, chicken dry, burger also dry and triple cooked chips chewy. A lovely pub and lovely staff left to flounder due to the General Manager not considering the issues.

I’ve visited a few times this year and good and service was great! Sadly However today, the food wasn’t great. We had 2 haddock and chips with minted peas. Peas really cold and haddock really greasy. The burgers the other 2 had were nothing special but ok.The service wasn’t great, but worst thing was the waiter who delivered our food really stank of BO! Not nice especially in hospitality sector as hygiene is a must.I did mention this to waitress I thought was senior as I left she said ‘ I know’ and I said ‘ well you need to tell him, it’s not good, Good Luck’To sum up not notice smelling an arm pit when food is delivered & taken away. How hard is it to wash and spray deodorant? We all sweat but seriously this was really pungent / not nice.Lovely pub and atmosphere usually but this smelly chap ruined our experience. I hope this helps his future hygiene routine. Food choice wasn’t great, or that great for price and dreadful pong ruined main so we decided to skip pudding! So disappointing when u pay for a meal ur daughter is put off with arm pit smells not great for first meal out after lock down

We had dinner here 4 November with another couple of friends. I thought the menu was a bit limited but when my battered haddock arrived it was enough for the four of us. With the fish came chips and minted peas and when I asked we were given lashings of tartare sauce. The portions were very generous and the staff couldn't have been nicer to us without actually joining us for dinner. Our table for 6 was in an area that is partitioned off and so our social distancing was perfect in that no-one could accidently get close to us without first vaulting a fence. The bill came in at around £90 including drinks and so a bit on the steep side for fish and chips but it was special and the service was spectacular.

We did not stay in the Hotel but visited this Pub on Monday night for a family catch up. Ordered two Haddock and Chips at around £15 per meal. Service was good and staff friendly but oh dear! the food was below average. "Triple cooked chips" were, as far as we could tell, reconstituted oven style frozen chips that were dry and all "endy". We did comment to the waitress and she sent out some more "fresh" chips, marginally better but in no way, shape or form, lovely triple cooked chips. The Haddock was fried in a fatty, oily batter and the mushy peas portion amounted to about a tablespoonful.Wine was good but we won't be back here to eat.

This is our local pub and we have been many times, usually it’s okay. Was not happy at all visiting during ‘eat out to help out’. We came twice. First time the food was pretty poor, dry burgers and the parfait was not great. But the second, most recent time was the worst and we are really disappointed. We came in at 8:20 with a table booked for dinner and asked straight away if we could order. Took about 15 minutes just for a waiter to come back and serve us. We ordered starters and had said we wanted to order mains too but just wanted a second to look at the menu. The starters - just one garlic bread and one crispy squid - took 20-30 minutes to come (the restaurant was almost empty). By the time they came the waiter told us that the kitchen was closed and we couldn’t order mains. No warning, and no chance to order even though we had previously said we were interested in ordering before the kitchen had closed. After that it took about 20 more minutes just to get us the bill. Really disappointed as we are regulars but the service was abysmal and left us with no dinner and little apology at 9pm. Don’t think we’ll be going back anytime soon sadly.

Positive stuff.Really good covid measures and friendly welcome. We were assured there were vegan options.I had the roast beef. Apart from the roast potatoes which were not great it was lovely. The beef cooked the way I like it, a generous portion a good range of veg and a rich gravy. The vegan nut roast was not as successful. The online menu had cauliflower cheese listed as being part of it. When i asked about this I was assured that was an error and the meal was fully vegan. When it arrived we were didsapointed with the portion size, much smaller than the beef dinner, the cauliflower cheese was not on it but its loss had not been made up by larger helpings of the other veg. I was surprised to see a Yorkshire pudding on the plate and asked if it was vegan. She came back it wasn't. There was no real apology, no offer to change the plate that had had animal products on it, not an issue for this person but would be for others and no offer of more veg to make up for the loss of a bit of the dinner. I then lacked confidence that the gravy was vegan and asked for this to be checked. It was obvious the waitress was irritated by my question and went to check, coming back to confirm it was. I feel little real effort was made to provide a vegan meal to the same quality as the meat offering. The burger was great and it was nice to be offered cheese as the fussy eater we were with did not want any if the accompaniments that came with it. I didn't feel we got particularly good value for money.

I'm really reluctant to write a negative review given how difficult the current circumstances have made operating a pub/restaurant. However, I was left feeling disappointed by my visit to the Crown Inn. The food was adequate and our waitress was accomodating. However, a male member of staff responsible for delivering drinks seemed frustrated by our basic requests to have a few mistakes rectified e.g. a distasteful mix of soda water and beer instead of a lemon shandy. Most disappointing, however, was that while the company has clearly spent a good amount of time and money adjusting the business model for Covid-19, I received a glass of water with a lipstick stain on. I was given another, but this error made me question the attentiveness of the staff as well as the lengths being taken to ensure the cleanliness of the restaurant. Needless to say, I will not be returning.

Booked this on a whim, looking for a quick booking at short notice. Arrived at around 5pm, greeted very warmly and check in was quick and easy. Our room, Pelley, Room 3, was stunning, i absolutely loved it, the decor, the theme, the bathroom was gorgeous. I would definitely want to stay in this room again! The bed is soft and so comfortable. No noise late at night despite being above the road. Easy to park. Even with the current covid19 regulations and procedures in place our stay was so relaxed. Stringent procedures to deal with covid19 and support staff and customers in place but not so noticeable that it puts anyone on edge, we are pretty relaxed about the whole thing and didn’t feel under any pressure to be anything but relaxed about it. Staff are friendly and had lengthy conversations with the managers, their dedication and passion to do a great job is apparent and very evident. We will 1000% be back! Thankyou for a great stay!

We went last year for the first time when Kenny was the Manager. Food was great, ambience was excellent as was the service. So we booked again for this year and we were so disappointed. Service was slow, and the food was not up to standard. For a starter described as crab roll, I wasn't expecting a miniscule amount of crab meat in a dry bread roll. The mains of traditional turkey and beef Wellington were served on cold plates. The food was cold, the vegetables were raw, and the roast potatoes were not roasted and were firm to say the least, and the turkey looked like it was processed turkey roll. For dessert the Black Cab Christmas Pudding was dry and disinteresting. There was a long wait for tea and coffee was offered and so we left. Next year we will take our hard earned £200 including drinks somewhere else. Two very disappointed customers who are regulars throughout the year.

I visited The Crown for lunch with friends. We had been told how lovely it is there. On arrival we were happy with how nicely it had been done out and the lovely Christmas decorations. Also, good atmosphere. But it was very cold. We had a radiator right by our table which either wasn't turned on or wasn't working. We asked the waiter if the heating could be turned on because we were cold. He told us the heating was on and left it at that. As for the food... very nice once we got it. Unfortunately, it took a very long time to be served. Other than us there was only one table in the restaurant, so there was no excuse for such slow service. We mentioned this to the waiter and asked if the desserts would take a long time too. He said the desserts shouldn't take too long. But alas they did. We didn't complain again as we were happy with our food. Desserts were lovely.

Quite a pretty pub (inside anyway) and the rooms are good. However the food was really chain pub style and very mediocre. What spoilt my visit though was a really surely, slow and a bit rude barman - showed a lot more interest in cleaning glasses and chatting to the waitresses than in serving people. So many better pubs in the locailty so they should look carefully at their team.

Met an old friend for lunch at the Crown. Firstly we were told there were no food orders being taken because of a Wake that was on. Why a Wake mean you cant serve food is beyond me. That resolved we had lunch which was well presented and hot. I had a haddock and leek fish cake. It was nearly all potato and quite tasteless. The real point of this post is that I was given the bill at £34.00 I checked my receipt this morning and I was charged £5.10 gratuity that i was told nothing about. I know I should have checked the amount and I take that on the chin. The service was literally bringing it out and taking the plates away. There absolutely no level of service that warranted that gratuity and in any case it shouldn't even be automatically added to a bill. I most definitely wouldn't have paid it if I had noticed at the time. Its not sour grapes on my part but daylight robbery on the venue part if this is standard for every customer.

Following a great circular walk starting & finishing at this venue we had a really great lunch. The menu was extensive plus several roasts to choose from. 2 of the party had roast beef, 1 pork & 1 nut roast. All were excellent with lovely vegetables and really good Yorkshire Puddings. Couldn’t fault the food. Surroundings were really pleasant and the staff very welcoming. Would certainly return here if in the area.

Currently sporting the most beautiful Christmas decorations, The Crown is looking fabulous at the moment. I’ve read the other reviews and it can be busy but it’s a compliment to the pub that people travel a reasonable way to go there. I don’t agree the bar staff are rude, every time I’ve been in there they have been lovely and the other night we had the most wonderful meal - really quite delicious and, as we know, pub meals can be a tad hit and miss so we were pleasantly surprised. Thoroughly recommend currently.

Fullers spent a couple of million quid doing this place up in 2012. They did OK but created more drinking space than the bar can cope with. The food is very average, compared to the Barleycorn Inn. My Mum and Dad stayed in the rooms above and said they were pretty good but a bit expensive for B&B; standard.

Stopped here for pre dinner drinks and for after dinner drinks. Nice and friendly bar staff. Had gin and tonics and they were served in tumbler which didn't seem right. Nice gin goblets would have been better.

Waited over 45 mins after ordering before I asked when our food would be arriving and was spoken to aggressively by bar lady and waitress. I actually had to ask them to calm down in the way they were talking as I didn’t what an argument, just wanted to know if the food was coming soon as our children are normally going to bed at this time and we needed to get home. They rang the kitchen, who lied and said the order had only been in 10mins!

We visited The Crown Inn for a Sunday evening meal. There were 2 other tables occupied but the 2 waitresses seemed determined to avoid us, one disappeared and the other carried on cleaning up around some of the empty tables. She eventually turned her attention to us. The weather was hot so a roast didn’t appeal, the remaining choices on the menu and the specials board were limited and uninspiring but we made a choice. We had to ask for the wine list before we could order. Our glasses of wine came and then the food was served 20/30 minutes later. We had to repeat our request for tap water, this on a hot night, and all was served in a very disinterested manner. The whole experience - food, drink and service was very poor.

Very unexciting menu. Normal 'pub grub' not done very well and the surroundings were somewhat indifferent too. Wouldn;t go back..

We booked in for an early evening meal for a small party of 6 on a Saturday. The atmosphere was good, the staff were quite pleasant and the starters were really nice. However, over an an hour and half after the starters were taken away, and with 2 polite nudges, we were still waiting for mains. When they eventually came, without exception, they were overcooked and didn't even look like freshly prepared food but meals you just put in the oven to heat up. The waitress was really nice and apologetic as well as embarrassed but even though most plates were taken away with lots not eaten, there was no sight of management to support her of offer any kind of resolution to recover the situation or smooth the path for future visits. Will not be coming back!!!

We live in the village and this is the only pub/ restaurant we return over and over again. Whether it’s for a glass of wine/pint of beer, lunch with friends in the bar, or parents visiting and dining in the restaurant. I would highly recommend.

We pre booked a table for 31 people and the pub were amazing. Our tables were ready when we arrived, drink orders were taken and every meal arrived accurately and on time. Food was very good indeed, especially since it was such a busy day and we were a big party. What made it even better was the staff. Helpful, calm, happy and knowledgeable. We made a bit of a racket (18 kids. It was never going to be quiet) and yet no one scowled at us or asked us to pipe down. A huge success and a great start to our NYE celebrations

Sunday lunch with wife and 2 1/2 year old. Service as ever was friendly if a little inattentive at times. Good selection of choices on the children's and adults lunch menus if a little pricey. Roast turkey and roast beef for adults was ordered and chicken and chips for our child. Can't fault the turkey roast, very good. But the beef was grisly, fat, tough and inedible! My biggest concern was the amount of salt on the child's portion of chips, far too salty for an adult let alone a toddler! You don't put salt on children's food! Needless to say she didn't eat much. One out of three meals being edible is not good enough in this day and age. The Crown has been so much better in the past let's hope lets hope they sort the kitchen out soon!

This is the second time I have had very poor service in this pub. The kitchen has a good reputation if one likes fairly standard pub food and the pub itself was warm and the decor classically old English pub style.

We came here for a few drinks after lunch at the weekend. A great range of drinks available but at the higher end of the scale. Food looked nice which we saw being served but again very expensive at £7 for a sandwich. Nice surroundings and bar staff were pleasant.

Went here for dinner with my Inlaw's as I've visited a few times with friends. Lovely staff lovely pub but not a place for children! my son who's only 3 wanted a bit of cheese in his burger and they wanted a £1!!! They didn't state it would be £1 extra till we got our bill, It wasn't even a hole slice of cheese. I had fish and chip witch I haven't had there before and it didn't have much flavour witch was disappointing. think there prices are way to high for what it is I've had fancy pricey food and it wasn't to that standard at all. My mum Inlaw had plaice witch was on the specials it came with a glass of wine there was a lot of bones in the fish and just came with normal boiled Potato that were dry not new potatoes as they listed thats what the fish came with. No vegetables either. We said to the manager £1 is a bit ridiculous for tiny bit of cheese in a tiny kids burger. Disappointed. Staff were lovely, lady served us through the evening and was very polite.

The service was very poor. I asked for hot chocolate with pistachio and the guy just gave me normal chocolate dr8nk. I double checked before taking the drink and he confirmed that pistachio is in there. Paid and got deceived - no pistachio ☹️

We booked to come here tonight for my 40th birthday meal. On arrival there was plenty of parking and everything inside was how we hoped it would be. A beautiful little country pub with an open fire burning away ,very friendly attentive staff. We were a party of 7 and all our drinks came promptly and each meal came out together so nobody was left waiting. The food was beautifully served, fresh and hot. I have no pictures to add unfortunately as we got stuck straight in to enjoy it. I'm very grateful to our servers this evening and our compliments to the chefs. We will certainly be coming back again. Thank you for a wonderful evening.

Have never been disappointed here. Have taken many friends and everyone has enjoyed. Back restaurant area can get noisy, but guess if there's a large group this can happen anywhere . You will need to book.
