Staying near by it an Airbnb thought would call in. We received a very welcome from Nicola ( who only works Tuesday nights) great knowledge about the local area and where to visit. We decided to stay for some dinner and the food was absolutely delicious cooked by Grace who also is the ladyland. Very friendly pub and fabulous dog friendly pub.

So to put it into context for you, me and me friend are 21 years old and drove over 3 hours to come away and visit the mendips. We decided to go out for dinner and regardless of the “no light policy” walked to the restaurant to have a nice dinner on our final night here. We went inside and instantly everyone seemed to go quiet. We sat down for 10 mins as the waitress walked past us easily 8/10 times passed food to nearby tables as well as drinks. After 15 mins she then looks over and said to me “go up to the bar if you want drinks” and to that I responded “can we get a menu?” To which she once again told me to go up to the bar to get one? We had looked at each other as she’s been taking drinks and food orders as well and bringing them out out the whole entire time but gave us the cold shoulder.. did she hate us because we’re obviously not from around here? Possibly.. will we return? Never.

Fantastic roast dinner which was plentiful in content. Lots of incredible flavours on the plate & the roast potatoes & gravy were amazing. Home made horseradish & apple sauce which were both top notch. Starters were also great, but we were so full we couldn't manage a dessert. Been here several times, always a warm welcome, friendly service & quality food in warm & cosy surroundings. Attention to detail over Covid whilst not losing its charm.Highly recommended

Husband and I from Weymouth met up with our daughter, living in Bristol, for a walk and lunch. Chose the Westbury Inn based on the trip advisor reviews. Glad to say it did not disappoint. This clean and covid friendly pub provided us with a lovely lunch served by helpful and very friendly staff. The shared starters of calamari and mushrooms were followed by a lamb, a fish and ploughman's main course and then completed with a banana and amaretto ice cream dish. Heaven !! We will be back when this next lockdown finishes. Thankyou for a lovely lunch

We ate at the Westbury Inn this evening as a family. The pub was busy and had a good atmosphere, and we hadn’t booked so was pleased when they could fit us in. We ordered and the food arrived quickly, with my wife and daughters meals being quite nice. My “special” steak and Guiness pie however was entirely inedible, and tasted as though some sort of cleaning chemical had been spilled in the gravy. A chap walked by the table and asked if the food was ok, but this was 30 seconds after it had been put down and I hadn’t tasted the pie at that point. It was then another 30 minutes before we saw anybody else, and that was the waitress coming to collect our plates (I had opened the pie crust and eaten one piece of meat). I informed her that it tasted of chemicals and wasn’t edible, and she replied “somebody had a piece 2 days ago and said it was lovely, and that’s what Guiness tastes like anyway”. I told her it literally burned my tongue (and not from heat) and she just turned and walked away. I then asked her for the bill when she walked past 5 minutes later and said to remove the pie. She then walked by our table around 10 times over the next 40 minutes, ignoring us entirely, before eventually we lost patience and asked somebody else for the bill as my young daughter was virtually asleep at the table. This other lady was friendly and happy to help. The pie hadn’t been removed from the bill but by this time I was so fed up of waiting that we paid and left. I have often driven by and thought that the Westbury looked like a nice little country pub, but following our first visit we certainly won’t return. It’s now an hour later and my tongue and throat are still burning from whatever chemical was in the pie, and the waitress simply didn’t care.

We arrived early and sat near the bar waiting to be given a table in the restaurant part. While sat in the bar it became clear from overheard chat they were short staffed and in a pickle. The two of us were a little concerned it might become a problem as the evening went on. However, nobody was panicking and we were sat down and served well and politely. One of the staff was obviously short of experience but once again no panic and i doubt many customers even noticed. The food was excellent, the chicken was very well presented and the salmon was also of high quality and the veg cooked just right. Desserts were also lovely. So basically, the staff that were on duty, deserve a lot of credit. They did their job extremely well , at the bar and with the food and if they can run it under pressure like that then they can cope any time. I would recommend this place to anyone passing on the main road and would go back anytime i'm in the area.

We popped in for a meal to be met with a frosty faced lady. We asked if they were serving food. After several moans and groans about being busy she walked away. We were left standing in the doorway. We had to wait for her to return to ask her if there was availability to eat. I have walked to a table and stood to look at a menu ( there were three free tables ). My husband asked again a out a table and food - The grumpy lady thought I had already chosen a table and continued to grumble. We chose to leave. Infriendly and unwelcoming. A simple no we cant take any more orders would have sufficed. Surely they are used to people walking in to ask about food . Would not recommend other farm friendlier local places to eat with cheaper prices too!

We have just visited the Westbury Inn and had a really lovely meal for my other halves birthday. There is quite limited parking here but on entering the pub (mind your head) it was very welcoming, there was the bar area with stools tables and chairs, a lounge area with large leather seats and sofa. Then through the archway there is the restaurant which was very clean and nicely laid up, the landlord was very pleasant and gave us the bar and restaurant menus. We were told that we could sit wherever we wanted to for our food. We placed our order and didn't have to wait for long to be called through to the restaurant, our young waitress was very polite and courteous toward us. We had a three course meal with drinks and were pleasantly surprised at the final bill, especially as the food was all presented very nicely and cooked to our liking. I found this place online when I was planning a visit to Cheddar recently. I called to book Sunday lunch but unfortunately they were fully booked. The lady I spoke to said she would get someone to call me back. The next day I received a call from Andy who said he could squeeze us in earlier if we didn’t mind sitting at a table in the bar rather than the restaurant. We didn’t mind so booked the table. When we arrived, we were greeted by lovely bar staff that took our drinks order and showed us to the table. The menu looked lovely with a wide variety of Sunday lunch options. We chose the beef and lamb which was amazing, the vegetables were cooked perfectly and the whole meal was absolutely gorgeous. Andy even came out to check if we were happy with the food. By the time we left the place was packed and many people were turned away who hadn’t booked. If you are planning a visit I suggest you book to avoid disappointment. The vegetarian brunch was lentil and cider loaf with hash brown beans tinned tomato and mushroom ..loaf ok but what a mix..and not presented nicely ..again looked like transport cafe food. This meal was such a disappointment ..have previously been very happy with meals here. Service was also very slow and shoddy ..cup of tea came with the tea bag in it!! Well well well. What a surprise. It’s the second visit to this Somerset village pub and the second time l chose the duck. The first time was at Xmas and the chef has changed, even though it was still pretty much in the top class bracket. This time l might add that the Half Duck at £17 was sublime. Falling off the bone it did the job very well. My Bessie had the crispy pork which was also in the top bracket. The area is not reknown for many good eating establishments but the Westbury should not be shunned in anyway considering In was pub food. The staff were very welcoming and although busy were very attentive to our needs. The choice of local ciders was quite impressive, not by the choices but definitely by the quality. The meal came with a substantial addition of mixed fresh veggies and for dessert l had a chocolate thingy which also ticked all the boxes. A delightful expreso completed the meal which came to around £55 which all in all was not bad at all. Well done Westbury Inn we will be back x

Highly recommend this pub for good food and a great selection of gins. It was so good we came back for a second visit in our one week stay. I can highly recommend the steak pie and the cod and chips. You won’t be disappointed.

We were in Wells on holiday for 4 days and we ate here for 3 of them, lovely food and they welcomed our dog. There was four in the group so we had 8 meals in total and everyone loved the food. Very friendly staff and a real good menu. We will dine there again next year when we go back on holiday. The only downside is there is very little parking.

Holidaying in the village we ate here on the first night (Friday) we sat in the garden & it was quite busy with lots of children playing. Ordered fish & chips & it was good but nothing special. The food & drinks are quite pricey & the garden is let down by rubble & rubbish lying around. Decent enough but plenty more places in the area better if you can travel

The pie I had was delicious but they left greaseproof paper at the bottom of my potatoes that I did not find until then end of my meal and had been eating throughout. When I told staff they were apologetic but did not offer me a discounted meal. They did offer me a free drink.

Lovely welcome when we visited with our cockapoo, we sat in the bar area and were given a tab for our food and drinks. The meals didn't take long to come out and were cooked to perfection with the portion sizes being very generous!

After a hectic couple of weeks, we decided to have lunch out. The Westbury has built quite a reputation locally. We both ordered the scampi from the bar menu with new potatoes rather than chips. It arrived promptly but, oh dear, 7 or 8 rather lonrly, overcooked pieces of scampi, small pot of tartare sauce plus a small pile of mushy(!) peas and a few unbuttered potatoes. No attempt at presentation, no seasoning. £11.50 each.

We ate here 3 times while staying at the nearby Westbury Corner House B&B.; Made to feel welcome which doesn`t always happen in a village pub. Enjoyed our meals, only downside was that they don`t do small portion meals. Even the bar meals are big. Food was very nice, so was the wine. A lot of more unusual things on the menu, including pigeon. The stuffed potato skins were lovely, so was the salmon fillet & the quiche. The menu does change so unfortunatey things on the sample menu at the B&B; weren`t on this week. Never mind, enjoyed what we had. Will definately eat there again if we are in the area. Pub has a new owner & is still aving some work done. Will be even better soon.

We stayed in the village and ate at The Westbury every night. We hadn’t planned to but the food was so good we kept coming back for more. The Sunday lunch was the best we have ever had - we had brisket beef which was literally falling apart and so tasty, this came with seven varieties of veg, lovely roast potatoes and a Yorkshire pud - it was fantastic. We also had mains of turkey, ham & leek pie, lamb shank, cod and chicken all of which were excellent. If you have any room left for desserts the cheese board was great and the creme brûlée with shortbread was delightful. Staff were friendly and helpful - special mentions to Ann-Marie, Henry and the young lady who served us Sunday lunch on June 24th but whose name we didn’t get. Many thanks to all. We wish you continued success.

The food was not good, gammon steaks thick and tough accompanying fried egg over cooked, lamb dish overherbed and overwhelmed by gravy/jus. Food took a long time to appear presumably had to be thawed first. Wines by the glass not good either. Shame because we had seen good reviews and the pub and garden have been well refurbished. No apology from staff even though it was obvious that we were not happy.

My elderly parents took my wife and I to this pub. I have to say I didn't have high expectations. However, the food and service were excellent. Well done Westbury Inn. What a gem.

A fortunate find for lunch on our way home. Driving home and looking for somewhere to have lunch we stopped at the Westbury Inn in the charming village of Westbury sub Mendip. My first question was do you take credit cards as I had forgotten to get cash - OK. Second question do you offer a Ploughman's Lunch; not on menu but told can do. My wife and I both ordered Ploughman's and were presented with a fabulous plate each of a delicious assortment of cheeses, meat and dressed salads which were delicious. The Patron/Chef came through and asked us if the meals were ok, the Barmaid/waitress was very friendly and gave us a brief history of the pub which had undergone a complete refurbishment to a very high quality, the garden was still being rebuilt and was looking very good. We wished we were staying around longer to try the other meals on the menu but alas we had to leave. In summary a great lunch, good value, lovely pub and friendly staff, we will try to revisit when in the area again.

Another outstanding meal. Exceptional food, attentive and friendly service, beautifully and tastefully refurbished pub retaining all of its authentic appeal, and brilliant value for money. Absolutely nothing to fault. It's utterly insane that a place can be this successful and busy and also financially unviable. So sad to hear that the tenants are having to leave when they've done everything perfectly. Impossible to imagine the brewery finding a tenant who can do anything better, so it just feels like they want the pub to fail.

Good afternoon , just want to give some feedback to our disappointing visit to Passeys today . We booked for breakfast and everyone in our group agreed that half the breakfast was cold or warm at the best . One breakfast had a hair in it also . This is not good at all for the premium price charged . We have been several times before as a group of six or less with no problems. I wanted to discuss with the lady serving but one of our group did not want to cause a scene so we just paid and left . This used to be our go to place on Sunday morning . It’s the most expensive breakfast in Portobello, and the quality of food does not now justify the price . We won’t be back .
