What a real treat. Myself and my partner eat out most weekends, it's genuinely quite difficult to find a local pub with service and food this good. Real cosy pub atmosphere, lovely food and superb service. For the first time in a while we left feeling full and like we've had a evening worth going out for.

Found this place by accident and had the most incredible evening. Staff knew what we wanted before we did. Our waitor Tess was super friendly and charismatic. Other pub goers were friendly also. Well, if you are in the bar area then, yeah, the atmosphere is a lot better...still not great, mind you. The other restaurant part, though (to be fair, like many establishments in Norfolk!) is not good - especially if you are sat alone, like we were. All you can hear is the kitchen staff...and watch them marching up and down outside and inside taking the bins out, accessing the fridges / freezers, which are positioned bizarrely away from the kitchen. The food was mediocre. My venison stew was nice, but insanely hot, the dumplings dry and crusty and tepid in the middle - and tasteless. Basically, all the elements of the dish had been largely assembled from pre-cooked food - which is fine, if you actually do it right! The chicken caeser salad was weird and the burger mediocre. Not good value for the money. Wouldn't go back.

It was a sunny Sunday lunchtime, but even though we were just there for mid-walk drinks, we were warmly welcomed. The staff were all friendly and helpful – and the gentleman behind the bar was very knowledgeable about the Norfolk Rum on offer. His recommendation was very tasty indeed. There’s a good selection of drinks and the seating in the garden is perfect. The food looked fantastic – we’ll definitely be back to try it.

Been wanting to try the Walpole Arms for ages. Inside and out it looks great and reviews seemed positive so went for dinner. Unfortunately we were met by a number of staff who seemed to be struggling with the busy service, kept apologising and forgetting simple requests. The menu was pretty limited and the food, to be frank, less than generous and very average. Some items also were rediculously expensive e.g. a very small quantity of sliced breakfast sausage "nibble" with honey & mustard at £8 and ham, egg and chips at £18. It was one of those meals where you pay, don't make a fuss, grumble and vow not to come again. Sorry guys.

Lovely old pub, first time I have visited since before covid. Thought I’d try it for a Sunday lunch. However, disappointed that they could not offer me a gluten free beer, had to opt for a cider. Checked menu out for gluten free options, waitress said she would have to check with the kitchen to see whether they had gf flour for batter for fish. I actually opted for a burger(always a safe bet) waitress came back to advise that they did not have any gf buns. However I must say the burger was very good. Decided to have a dessert, sticky toffee pudding was annotated with GF and confirmed by waitress that it was, so I ordered that, 5 mins later she came back to inform me that it was a typo and was not gf at all. Warning to coeliac’s, check menu and don’t assume that because it says GF on the menu, that is actually is. Still Walpole is a smashing old world pub and very popular but it needs to give a bit more thought when it comes to catering for those who have to follow a gluten free diet.

Two sandwiches, and two kids meals which are massively over the top for kids! Practically an adult meal and kids hardly ate them due being far too strong in flavour which after trying they were. Sixty quid later for 3 drinks and four main meals, probably look elsewhere next time due to being very expensive for what you get.

For what we learned was a relatively new pub, The Walpole Arms feels like a community fixture for the picturesque village of Itteringham. Our meals, a chicken shawarma and an oxshin stew, were delectable and enhanced by the good company of our hosts, Peter and Lis, of the Itteringham Mill B&B a stone's throw away. They have a great couple of holiday cottages, one suitable for a couple like us, the other for four, in dreamlike repose by the river over which sits the Mill, and in whose every verdant and carpented detail their hard work is evident. We would visit again and again so long as the Mill, and The Walpole Arms, remain in such good hands.

We made our first visit to The Walpole Arms following the recommendation of friends. It was a lovely sunny day and lots of people were seated outside. We had a quiet inside table and appreciated the cool atmosphere. Once our drinks has been brought, we ordered roasts and they arrived promptly. However, there was quite a gap between the arrival of our plates of meat and the supporting vegetables. By the time we got to eat, the meat had cooled. The food was well cooked and there were plenty of vegetables and lots of gravy to enjoy. After our plates had been cleared, we ordered desserts but, this time, the wait was considerable and then they were delivered in drabs and drabs. Again the food as excellent. Overall the ambience was great; the food was excellent but the service was poor. Meanwhile, everyone was very friendly which pushed the overall score up from 'average' to 'good'! On getting home, I discovered that a 10% service charge had been added to our bill. We were not told about this at the time and - if I'd known - I would not have added a substantial tip!

There was even a mini pot of their ox shin stew alongside it. This place is truly a hidden gem, everything about it is just perfect. This pub is so remote and isolated that it gets no passing trade, the only way for it to thrive to make sure that the food/service/beer is top notch and they achieve this with flying colors. The menu is adventurous without being pretentious and the food is simply outstanding. Every dish my wife and I had was fantastic, even the beef stew absolutely sang with flavor. The kitchen crew certainly know their trade and clearly aim for excellence with everything they prepare. The chips were the crispiest that I have ever had in a pub and were a great contrast to the tender and juicy stew. The cask ales were kept very well too. The serving staff were very friendly but always professional. They are recommended in the AA food guide, but are certainly worthy of a rosette.

Since the Walpole reopened with new owners we've been a few times. It has a very friendly vibe and has always been a great country pub. It is still early days so things have not yet settled down. Our meal was mixed. The cauliflower tempura, although not coming in what I would expect for tempura batter, was excellent. The hint of sweet chilli and the pickled red cabbage contrasted really well with the cauliflower. The key elements of our main courses (skate and ox liver) were excellently cooked but then it seems as though concentration had failed. My skate came swimming in a rather brown glutinous sauce (supposedly pommes mouselline although it tasted vaguely cheesy) with Brancaster mussels - one of which had not opened and should not have been served. The rainbow chard (or "charred" as on the menu) was absent. My wife's ox liver was supposed to be served with Chardonnay polenta. We could not detect a difference between the sauce on her plate and that on mine. It all tasted OK but was let down by disparity between description on the menu and what was actually on the plate. I'm afraid that is a pet hate of mine. Another visit this time for Sunday lunch (November) Smoked trout tart starter was very good. Roasts were very good with regard to quality of the meat and cooking. However the meal could have done with a larger selection of vegetables. The chocolate delice seemed to have come recently from the fridge and was so dense as to be difficult to get a spoon into, and once in the mouth stuck to the tongue and the roof of the mouth making it rather difficult to eat. One member of our party had the £12 cheeseboard which came with just one piece of cheese and a few artisan biscuits. This was such poor value that we took it back and swapped it for another pudding.

A great find. Lovely character filled pub with restaurant in a great countryside setting. Great beer and food. Worth a visit even if it's a little off the beaten track

Outstanding value for money with a 3 course menu for £29 or 2 courses for £23. (November 2023). We had some high quality dishes, especially the harissa lamb starter and the north sea cod main dish (which had a nice Indian twist). Service was a bit “hit and miss” and some of the tables are poorly placed. (We asked to change tables), but overall this was an excellent experience.

Brilliant, cozy and friendly country pub with excellent service, a very good range of drinks for all tastes and a superb Sunday lunch. One of the best roasts we've had in Norfolk. Excited to go back and try the rest of the menu soon.

Very pretty country pub. Food was superb, with my rare steak cooked perfectly. Staff were very friendly and made a fuss of our dog which is always a plus for us. We will be back!

Lovely well cooked and presented Sunday lunch, promptly served in the wonderful dining area. Only minor issues being that some staff i would suggest were limited with their training, lacking in knowledge on some simple questions asked, and the deserts which were not cheap were very small . But overall an enjoyable experience and we will return.

We went for Sunday lunch on my biryhday Well , absolutely great , We used to visit The Walpole Arms , probably 15 years ago ,things have changed , new owners etc , however the quality and ambience are the same , beautiful 17th century property, remarkable unchanged in 20 years , and doesn't need to be. Low ceilings, wooden beams , lovely woodburners blazing , comforting snell of oak fires . The staff are welcoming and friendly, attentive, and polite. The bar selection was good and also very importantly local. The food was very good , well cooked and well presented, excellent roast rump of beef , portions correct size and very well priced for the quality , the wine list was also good , probably under priced actually. All in All a really pleasant and wonderful day at The Walpole Arms

My girlfriend and I stopped at this pub by chance whilst out for a drive. First impressions were brilliant, a lovely country pub with a beautiful garden (especially in the sun!). We stopped for a drink and a bite to eat at lunch, my girlfriend had a ‘baked copys cloud’ (Camembert style dish) which she thoroughly enjoyed. Meanwhile I opted for the beef pastrami sandwich, again, delightful. Staff were very attentive and helpful. Even provided my girlfriend extra bread without question and free of charge. Overall a lovely experience, reasonably priced food and drinks and a lovely setting. We will be returning!

£15 for what was advertised as Katsu chicken. Turned out to be a chicken cutlet with some sauce poured over it, some crinkled peas and a few dry chips. Beer was good

We phoned through a big order tonight and asked for it to be ready at 6.45pm. We arrived 5 minutes before and the staff were busy cooking and preparing it. This gave me lots of confidence that the food was freshly cooked. Very efficient and good value-£63 for 7 people. Everything was delicious and hot. The fish (of all sorts) was delicious. Chips perfect. Well done and thank you for being so friendly. Good luck and I hope you’re successful!

Tastefully decorated clean bedroom , quiet at night despite overlooking the road . Surprising that no towel rail in the otherwise ample sized bathroom . What to do with damp towels ? The biscuits on my tray were placed in a glass and immersed in an inch of water . £25 dog tax was outrageous on top of an over priced room. The dog didn’t even receive a breakfast sausage. Logging in to the WiFi and you are asked for; name , date of birth , gender, address and email . Why is this and what are you going to do with my data? Dinner was the biggest disappointment. The pie was more air than meat and the accompanying mash was of the instant variety- a very unpleasant texture. Stingy portion of vegetables and again a very odd texture. For a self proclaimed pie champion this is quite sad. The crumble could potentially have been homemade but the fruit was , I suspect , from a can . The grubby looking table menus should have set off the alarm bells. Penny pinching never ends well , customers don’t like it. Staff very friendly but could benefit from introduction of a uniform to smarten them up . Breakfast sausage was anaemic and flavourless. Bacon rasher so small i needed my glasses to find it on the plate. Milk would have been a useful accompaniment to my cereal. Out of the six hotels on my nine night itinerary , this was the most expensive and the most disappointing. No, I would not stay or eat here again.
