Called in here for lunch 16/05/2025. This place seemed to have skipped decades of progress, that’s by no means a criticism, it’s a plus where I’m concerned. Unfortunately these places are few and far between with their delicious genuine home made food served in cosy surroundings. There were 3 guys and we all agreed that the food was delicious, well kept beer, and friendly service, TOP MARKS.

Horrendous experience here discovering the vegan burger is not in fact vegan! We only discovered this as I have a dairy allergy and after terrible customer service and communication from the kitchen, finding that there were very little dairy free options, we suggested that I have the beef burger in the vegan burger bun. The kitchen initially claimed the beef burger had dairy in to try and stop me from ordering it, then created some made up story that the vegan burger did not actually come in a vegan bun, but a dairy based Brioche bun, making the vegan burger not actually vegan as advertised. The kitchen insisted that anyone claiming to order the vegan burger was informed of this and people who are vegan often enjoy the vegan burger without a bun - however we found this hard to believe. A much more likely option we felt is they often serve the vegan burger with the diary based bun telling people that it is vegan. However they only refused to serve me it due to my allergies. The only bright side was that our waiter was very accommodating and kind. Very professional young lad, in contrary to the kitchen. Half the menu was also missing and they claimed it was due to a busy Easter weekend. We only came for lunch on Sunday so seemed very early to be running out of food only half way into the bank holiday weekend. Not sure how a business can be such poor planning. Overall however, terrible service with allergies and if you are vegetarian or vegan I’d be sceptical of how vegan the dishes they serve you actually are.

Looks a bit tatty from the outside to be honest, but a proper old pub inside. Great selection of beers and ciders, which I couldn't unfortunately sample as I was driving, but I got told (numerous times) by the other members of our large party... Food was just good pub stuff, fish and chips, burgers, chilli etc - but my partners whitebait was some of the best I've ever had. Simple food but well made with fresh ingredients, easy really.

We parked on the pub carpark , booked a table, then walked to the beach to see the seals. What an excellent decision this proved to be. The 20 min walk to the beach was quiet and pleaseant and we stoped to watch deer in the woodlnd, Then, at the beach we were blown away by the number of seals we saw just chilling and not at all bothered by us taking photos. Then back to the pub to be greeted by very freindly staff and shown to our reserved table. The food was all freshly prepared and was excellent. What happened??? 😭 This feels like punching an old friend and something I never thought I'd do as we've been here so many times over the years and had amazing meals, so we were greatly looking forward to one for my birthday Son and I were craving some of the steak with stilton and mushroom sauce that we'd not had in a couple of years (oh boy was that GOOD), but we sit with menus to see they don't do steak anymore (nor much that used to be on the menu unfortunately) Very generic pub food, didn't fancy much but decided on garlic mushrooms as a starter, and spaghetti Bolognese from the Specials Board - "sorry we don't have spaghetti", ok I'll try ham egg and chips then 'Starter' comes, was absolutely huge and could have fed all 4 of us! They were ok, no more no less Mains arrived, my Mum on finally being given her Halloumi burger was informed "we're out of chilli jam" (it was what sold her on it, had she been told they were out she'd have ordered something else) Ham, egg and chips - eggs good and cooked nicely, but unfortunately the ham was so sweet and dry, and the chips (unlike what seemed like fresh last time we came) were clearly frozen, dry, and like cardboard making those two elements almost inedible We had to ask for cutlery and condiments (which now come in fiddly packets rather than bottles/dispensers), asked for a bottle of water and the waiter slammed it down and took two of our glasses away 😆 Ladies toilet was out of order so we had to use the men's, which smelled like it hadn't been cleaned in a year (a fact we were reminded of every time someone entered as we were seated quite close) So to say we were disappointed with our food is an understatement, plus point and saving graces were that the ale I had was very good, there were a couple of very nice customers and an extremely lovely dog who I'd have run off with! Pub itself is as gorgeous and atmospheric as ever but please please please sort out your food! Last rating I gave was 5 across the board, never envisaged leaving anything lower yet here we tt

Not been to the Nelson Head for a few years and it use to be an old favorite but sad to say we won't be back anytime soon. The attitude of the young lady serving at the bar and taking food orders really set the scene from the beginning, completely disinterested, not an ounce of warmth or any senses of customer service. Commenting to someone as she poured our drinks that she had enough and was already looking forward to the end of the shift and this was at about 18:30! The food was okay though not cheap and there was a long list of things whilst on the menu that were not available which seemed strange so early on a Saturday evening. We were not expecting fine dinning or 5 star service but it would have been nice to have been made to feel welcome customers rather than just an inconvenience.

Came in for food. Went to the toilet to wash my hands only to find after i had soaped up that there was no water. I asked for somewhere to rinse my hands as i will be eating etc to be told they cant do anything and tissue was the best they can do. I said come on mate i need water. He said sorry he couldn't do anything. I had to smuggle my way into the ladies toilet. We went elsewhere. How stupid is that..

Just eat here! If you’re in the area and trying to decide where to eat. Just eat here. We sat and read dozens of Google reviews of local pubs and it felt a bit like a mine field. It was our last night of holiday and we wanted a great night out. We couldn’t decide on where to go (and obviously didn’t want to be disappointed) we took a gamble and chose The Walpole Arms. Needless to say, we weren’t disappointed. It was a Saturday evening, we booked late and they were able to accommodate us. We sat outside in the sunshine. The service from the bar staff was exceptional, the young girl behind the bar really was a credit to the place. We were a family of four and took our drinks outside to sit in the garden in the sun. The menu was adequate for both adults and children. The service was also pretty quick - which helps when you have two hungry kids. The food was priced well and I can’t not recommend enough. We had the crab linguine, burger, cod and chips and kids chicken goujons. A beautiful pub/restaurant in a beautiful setting. Stop looking, and just book. Thanks.

No disabled access currently - 01/05/2025. Be aware that the Holkham Estate is currently resurfacing the parking at Lady Ann Drive and this is not mentioned on the Holkham website. We were directed to park on a rough field, a long way away from the cafe and beach walkway and the field is not suitable for wheelchairs/walkers/mobility aids. We checked with the Attendants and there was no option to drop off less mobile family closer to the walkway on more stable ground so we left and went to Wells-next-the-sea Harbour instead, which was accessible.
