We came here for food with a pretty big order. There were certain orders missed, people were waiting for ages, even though we had pre-ordered. When enquired about ordering the ones they’ve missed out, they said they can’t make that. I’m wondering how are they going to accommodate for walk ins? I did not appreciate the very non hospitable behaviour for a hospitality business. Can very confidently say, they have guaranteed a non - returning customer.

Great Sunday roast - really good portion sizes which are definitely value for money. We had the large plate, and had gammon and pork & stuffing. Yorkies are huge! Veggies cooked to perfection. Staff & service were great, nothing was too much trouble at all. Will definitely be back and might try and squeeze pudding in next time!

Great Pub , but barmaid let us down ! Such a shame ! Previous visits have been great but was lied too for no reason as usually i wouldnt let things like this bother me but we were told the chef was grumpy as we would coukdnt order food , yet two tables ordered after us ( and then told it was because they booked, but they hadnt as we were friends with them so lies made it worse )

We came to the volunteer 2 weeks ago we had an amazing Lunch -meat platter. We had our temperature checked & our names taken so felt very safe. We returned yesterday to get a meat platter again but unfortunately it was a disaster, a different member of staff to our previous time! We had no temperature checked, no name taken, and was just told to walk straight in after waiting at the entrance door for 5 minutes where we was following instruction not to enter until we was seen! Instead someone inside told the bar lady we was waiting and she just told us to come in!no soap in the toilet even after asking for soap to be provided, still none put there before we left.The meat platter was nothing like what we had 2 weeks ago, complete different dish and was told it was an error on the menu although we ate there 2 weeks previously and had an amazing meat platter so they lied. Absolutely awful tbh and will never return which is a shame as we recommended to all our friends after our first time.

Have just enjoyed an excellent lunch at The Volunteer, they are participating in the government Eat out to help out scheme so it was a bargain. Food was lovely hot and fresh and the staff are checking everyone in and also taking temperature on arrival so felt very safe and that they are taking government guidelines very seriously. Thank you to the team there really enjoyed our visit

Comfortable and good breakfast reasonably priced. Did not take any other meals. A little noisy from the bar (girls night out!!!) which was right under our room bit it all ended promptly at closing time.

The Volunteer Inn had been booked by my company for my colleague and I for a visit to a local business. The Inn is directly on a busy road next to a local car wash. This initially did not fill either of us with hope especially as the place was ‘decorated’ for Halloween. There were a few locals in the bar but otherwise it was quiet. A relatively small place we were still not sure about it but how wrong could we be. Without exception all the staff we met were really friendly and welcoming. Admittedly my room was a little small and as it faced the road was a bit noisy if you left the window open but it was clean and the bed was comfortable. We met with customers in the evening and decided to eat here rather than travel. Definitely glad we did. For a small pub the food was exceptional. The starters were well presented and really tasty and we all had burgers for mains, these were declared as some of the best we’d had. At all times the staff were really attentive and chatty, putting up well with four rather inebriated blokes! After a reasonable night’s sleep the breakfast was well cooked and plentiful and a great start to the day. Sorry would have been 5 stars but my shower was a bit hit and miss and although you can’t do anything the road noise kept me awake a bit. Sorry a bit picky. Thank you to all at The Volunteer. We had a great time. Hope to be back soon

Myself and my wife stopped and had lunch while getting the car cleaned, this has been 2nd time we have eaten here and thought the basket meals were perfect for a lunch time snack, got greeted by lovely bar staff and shown to a table.My wife wanted a gin & didn’t know to much but the bar maid went through some with her and I must say it was garnished beautifully and not just chucked in a glass like other places I have visited.Would like to come back and have a roast dinner as I see advertised.

Just got back from 2 nights at The Volunteer - attending a wedding at Lains Barns which are only a mile or so away. Stayed here for two nights with my wife, daughter and son-in-law.Rooms were basic but with everything you could need. Spotlessly clean, comfortable bed, tea making facilities, ironing board and iron. En Suite with a shower etc. I have to say the shower was the most powerful I have ever encountered in a hotel. Small wardrobe and shelf space but enough for a couple of nights stay. The biggest asset The Volunteer has is the staff. Warm and welcoming and nothing was too much trouble. When it came to asking about taxis they made all the bookings for us. Breakfast (full English for us) was excellent. We would not hesitate to stay here again.

We attended the re-launch of The Volunteer Inn on Thursday night and had a great evening.We were really impressed with the portion sizes, the new menu has loads of great choices and it all looked fantastic. The staff are lovely and it has a great atmosphere.

A few of us came here for the breakfast challenge, this is the only place local that offers this challenge and everything was cooked perfectly! I had scrambled eggs with bacon & sausage and it was perfect and both came out together.Lovely customer service from the bar staff.Will return again and maybe come for the quiz night I see advertised that’s fortnightly.

Well we called in on the way home for a drink and meal. Very friendly staffs. Not a great deal of choice on The menu. But we had two steak burgers with very large chips With salad and a fish n chips. Fish was very large a good size with lovely big chips. Would we go again yes for sure.

Had a table booked for Sunday lunch. Sat down and was already disappointed by the menu as the only 2 options were either beef or pork.When we ordered beef, they had to go and check that they still had some left. If they didn’t, we would have had to leave as my partner didn’t like pork and there was no alternative.It wasn’t busy at all, there were 2 tables already in there (3 including us) so not sure why the food took just over an hour to arrive.When it arrived, we had to ask for gravy as it was not already on the plate, to be told that they had ran out of gravy. On a Sunday. For a roast dinner. We then proceeded to eat a very dry and plain roast dinner. Which was not worth the hour long wait or the over £30 bill at the end.

Great for business lunches and dinners for those visiting Williams F1. My colleagues and I have regularly dined there, usually when quiet. Parking is a little awkward as there seems to be a carwash operating in the car park, but once inside, the environment belies the slightly grubby exterior. Staff are friendly and attentive. Food is well- cooked (though there were shortages each visit) and prices are very average, one might say they are good value indeed given the quality coming from the kitchen. There is plenty of space between tables, a rare luxury in today's market.

Booked for 1.30pm on Sunday for lunch, finally got our food at 3.15pm. Ordered chicken only to be told they had ran out although served other diners before us so settled for beef only to be served pork?! It arrived cold and inedible

Would like to say a huge thank you to Lisa and the staff at the volunteer for accommodating my grandfathers wake today . The food was amazing and the service you provided was incomparable. Everything was perfect so thank you from all of us .

We first stopped here to have a coffee en route and the staff were brilliant, cake was delicious. So when we needed to stay somewhere, we phoned and booked a room. We were not disappointed, the room was clean, warm and welcoming, bed was comfortable. We had a great supper, hot and full of flavour. In the morning we were given a great breakfast and the lady was very friendly. Vegetarians catered for. Will definitely be back.

Remarkably good value Sunday Lunch - choice of roasts as well as the main menu. Two size options (the large is huge) and kids' roast are free. Polite, friendly and attentive service. Deserves to do well.

I booked a table for 6 over the phone staff very welcoming the roast its self was so good all of the dishes came out together and hot i was blown away with the food it tasted beautiful came with extra gravy and cauliflower cheese staff very friendly and helpful they offered more drinks and condiments also did a check back to make sure everything was okay i ordered a large the portions are very generous and next time ill order a small the pub itself is clean and homely plenty of car spaces to park we will visit again soon also a great touch at the moment a free kids roast with every adults roast you order ive been looking for the perfect roast and ive finally found it on my door step 5 stars well done guys.

Thought we’d book Sunday lunch here while getting the car cleaned, amazeballs Sunday roast has to be the best so far in the area, so glad we dined here have booked again for their Christmas menu with the family.

In desperate need of a fry up and a pint and this place was like nirvana! Pint of San Miguel and a fantastic cooked breakfast! No skimping on portions and excellent quality ingredients, not like you get at some places. Very helpful friendly staff. Well worth the money. Will come again.

First time eating here, and I was amazed! The food was spectacular. Best omelette I’ve had in the UK! Staff were very approachable, helpful and most of all friendly. Will be back here for sure!

Can’t recommend this quirky little pub enough, The staff are more than happy to fulfill your requests and service is prompt. I’ve enjoyed recently an evening meal after a long day at work and stopped off on my way home and the steak was cooked to perfection! Can’t thank the chef olly and the beautiful host Lisa for a great experience of the volunteer, she made you feel very welcome and was a real laugh. I highly recommend!

Last minute decision to pop in with friends for brunch and is now our first choice from now on when we decide to eat out. The food was delicious and served beautifully. We were served by the young lady behind the bar (Lisa) who was very polite and made sure we had everything we needed.

Wow what a great little pub, we've heard about this little pub through friends and thought we'd give it a visit for the Sunday roast, so glad we did, it is by far the best Sunday roast we have had in a pub.

A friend I had not seen for a while came over to take me out for a meal we arrived at the volunteer to warm friendly staff a busy restaurant which always is a good sign then ordered a lovely bottle of red my friend had a starter the tomato soup full of flavour and then the roast beef yummy and delicious the gravy was epic!!

4 of us visited today for a staff lunch and I was delighted with the pub. (we've been to a few venues in the area but never here) Very pleasant decor and lovely staff. We had a variety of meals and each of us enjoyed our food. The fish and chips were amazing! We shall definitely be back!

Fantastic breakfast challenge, the only place in the area that does this and boy isn't it a challenge and at a very good price as well! freshly cooked, very friendly bar maid, lovely music being played, will defiantly return as I'd like to try the steak offer they currently offer on a Thursday evening.

I’ve dined here quite a few times as I work close by. Over the summer a new chef has started and the food has changed slightly but is a massive improvement. You can still get your pub classics but there is also an al a carte menu which is slightly more pricey but the food is almost Michelin quality. There are several different ales and largers available and assortment of wines. The outside is very misleading. But inside is clean, comfortable and full of quirky character. I will be back again and again!

Ordered food. Asked for no salad in pulled pork burger. Came with salad all mixed into the pulled pork. was told to pick it out.maybe we were unlucky but wouldn’t visit again.

We popped in on the off chance last Sunday for roast dinner.

Went at 7:00pm we were the only ones in the pub! Very friendly welcome , good choice of beer. Food was pretty good, they are trying really hard to make a go of it , just need some more customers. We will return!

Dinner for two on a Wednesday evening - super choices on the menu, with an a-la-carte menu to choose from too. I chose the Roasted Duck Salad with beetroot and pomegranate which was delicious and plentiful, my son chose the Sausage and Mash with 3 large very tasty sausages, we also shared a bowl of rosemary fries which were delicious. I chose the brownie for dessert which was one of the best I have ever tasted. Certainly value for money too. I would definitely recommend this establishment now that it has a wonderful chef and better management - I had visited a year ago and was very disappointed but I am glad that I tried again because the improvement is over 100%.

As others have said, The Volunteer doesn’t have a great deal of kerb appeal but don’t let this put you off. The food is wonderful; good portions, very fresh and well presented. The evening was made more pleasant by the friendly staff and great service. Having lived in Grove for a year, I’m sorry that I haven’t eaten here before. It’s good to know they also do breakfast as I can see this as a regular place to go the morning after the night before!

I have previously been here before and had some good food. However it saddens me to write this but my last recent visit is just a disappointed from my previous one before. Decided to come back, the set course Sunday meal wasn't anything close to the first visit. I don't want to be negative because we did enjoy our first visit but we wanted to be honest and suggest the standard of food should be more consistent and

We stayed at the Volunteer for two nights using it to access Oxford, the Inn was not how I envisaged, out of town, on a main road, car wash in the car park, the stairway past the kitchen, no information from staff about wi fi accessing and about returning late, virtually no shower pressure when other residents are using theirs. The positives were, Clean recently updated room and comfortable bed, quiet room considering being on a main road, adequate breakfast.

We were advised to give the new menu at the Volunteer a try as everyone had said how great it is. We were greeted by welcoming bar staff and shown to our table. The pub may not be a looker from the curb, but inside it is a chilled and relaxing place to be.

Outstanding food and amazing service by very attentive staff! Excellent value for money and considerable portion sizes! Having specials on for each day of the week is a lovely addition.

Wow! What a Sunday lunch, it was amazing. I had the chicken my husband had the Pork Belly. The plate was full with 4 different veg, roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding the full works, tasted fantastic. Then we had desert, mango and lime cheesecake, superb, will definitely be going back to have Sunday lunch again. And an added bonus there is a car cleaning firm next door so while we had a fantastic lunch we had the car cleaned too. Win-win

My wife went last night with two friends

Took a friend for a meal one Monday evening. Place was almost empty. Food was OK except for 'mushy peas'. Very odd taste and texture. The barman was very attentive and helpful.General appearance of property looks good until you view the back/kitchen from the car park.

An improvement to the garden since last summer although there was a large rubble pile in one corner, probably awaiting a skip. Food was fantastic, light bites/small plate choices ideal for lunch and enabled us to have room for a dessert. Only gripe as far as the service was concerned was that the waiting staff seemed to leave on the dot of 2pm so there was nobody around to take our payment so we had to go and pay the bill at the bar. Will definitely go again though.

We were looking for somewhere to have lunch today and I thought why not try the volunteer. We always drive past and have never eaten there. I must say we were pleasantly surprised everyone was do friendly and the pub itself was lovely, we both ordered roast lamb it was amazing and the roast potatoes were to die for. We both had dessert as well and again beautiful as well as being beautifully presented and all reasonably priced . We will definitely go again and soon thank you guys

We hadn’t used The Volunteer for a while but decided to book in for Mother’s Day and wow, what a treat!!! I loved the wide variety of gin on offer and the service was great. And the food...just fantastic!! We had a party of 10, all having a mixture of meals and we all commented on how superb it all was. Many of us had a roast and it was all cooked to perfection. I had beef and it was beautifully roasted and totally delicious. Everything tasted home cooked (fabulous Yorkshire Puddings) and the perfect sized portions. And as for the desserts....wow again!! And all at a good price too. We were all very impressed by the whole experience. The place seems to be run by young staff but what a fantastic team they are. We will definitely be going back very soon!!!

6 of us came to have a family meal and it was amazing! Lovely friendly staff, quick service and the food was to die for! Will 100% be coming again!

Just had a lovely lunch at the volunteer, the food was delicious and the service was warm and friendly willl definitely be returning. If you do visit you must try the fish and chips I can also recommend trying the delicious chocolate brownie

Went for a Christmas meal with some friends . We had 3 courses and a glass of bucks fizz which was included in the price the food was excellent and well presented. Will go back again with my family .

This was our second visit. On both occasions the delicious and beautifully presented food was served by friendly, helpful staff.

Yet another lovely meal at the Volly, staff, food and atmosphere all excellent. Can’t fault it. We both had fillet steak for two with chips.

Went for my son birthday, fantasic meal, wonderful staff, very friendly and helpful, The food was 10 out of 10, I highly recommend this for a visit, we will be going next week, my meal was so tasty and the flavour were amazing.

I am a frequent visitor to the volunteer and often come with friends. Last week I had a wonderful bangers and mash meal, so delicious I couldn't wait to come back and have the same tonight. Jackie, Jordan and Lisa are always welcoming and friendly. 10/10.

We came to try out the gin night and were pleasantly surprised by the team. The showed us their menu and we booked to come back with the kids.

Booked to have lunch, menu quite limited ,but we made our choices. 8oz rump steak medium rare and local sausages with creamy mash ,peas and a red wine jus.The staff were attentive and food looked very nice coming out of the kitchen. When ours arrived my companions steak was nearly raw and my sausages were cold in the middle (the plate was hotter than the sausages)We complained and the plates were returned to the kitchen and returned later ,we were told we could have complimentary desserts.

After a very bang average roast 6 months ago, we decided to give the volly another try after hearing from numerous people the menu had improved. Thoroughly enjoyable and one of the best roast around could not be faulted. We will be back!

Always looking for somewhere new to go and eat we had heard from various friends that the Volunteer Inn had recently been re opened and they were doing great meals, so we decided to give it a go and go for the Sunday lunch. It was nice to be greeted with a lovely smile and we were shown to our table where we ordered a starter and then 2 Sunday Roasts. The food was simply delicious, can not fault a thing. The waitress even came over and asked if we would like some more potatoes.

I popped in for a sunday roast after seeing the children's offer, kids free roast dinners on a sunday. i wasn't disappointed by far one of the best roasts in the wantage area.

Food very tasty and well presented, good value. Garden is shingle and concrete, not exactly easy on the eye and easy to trip if you're not careful. I understand it's under new ownership so hopefully garden is a work in progress.

Lovely evening arranged by the staff who were pleasent and helpful all night. Great music,wine and as much cheese as you could eat!

Called in here for lunch today on one of my regular visits to Oxfordshire. As with so many places it's not particularly attractive on the outside but is good on the inside: I found a tasteful mauve decor and good ambience with light pop music playing quietly in the background. Service was prompt and friendly and I was soon enjoying a Gourmet Home-made Fish Finger Baguette served with Chunky Chips (£6.95) - nicely cooked, beautifully presented, and very tasty! My Diet Coke with ice and lemon (£1.25) was refreshing. I went on my way rejoicing - thanks guys!

I had the lamb pie and my wife had the sausage and mash which we both enjoyed. Washed down with a couple of diet cokes.

I was pleasantly surprised by this place. I decided to try as the reviews seemed pretty good. I must admit I drive past this place regularly and it does not look very appealing from the outside. However, do not judge a book by its cover. The decor inside is actually very welcoming and so are the staff. It was quiet when we went in we were the only people and I was surprised this place deserves a lot more business. I am hoping it was just an early time and not a busy day. We opted for a Sunday roast and it was very good! I would recommend this place and very good value at £10.95 you can get a similar quality dinner in surrounding pubs but for at least £5 more. The bar has a good selection of drinks. I will be back and will sample main menu. Also will try steak night as appears very good value. Give this a try!

Promising start, greeted by waiter who showed us our table ...... and advised that we could take our pick of the others if we wished as they weren't exactly busy. Offered drinks which were brought straight away and menus ( very restricted Sunday Menu ).

The two of us went for the 'special' steak night. Two steaks cooked to order with a bottle of wine. At the time it was priced at £25-00 for the deal excellent value and a lovely meal. Would definitely do it again.

We had lunch at the Volunteer on Saturday and the food was fantastic. We took the grandparents and they enjoyed ham,egg and chips and a macaroni cheese all cooked quickly. The staff were really helpful and couldn't do enough for us.

My wife and I called in for dinner in the way home from work, very friendly service, good food presented well Definitely recommend

Visited here with two little ones to have a Sunday roast.

This was disappointing. 25 of us went from Wantage WI. We pre ordered food but it was really very slow and disorganised. They needed at least one more waiting staff and probably someone else in the kitchen. Some food was cold and one persons ham wasn't cooked. They paid no attention to the pre ordered menus and just stood there asking things like "whose a tart?" That was quite funny as 3 elderly ladies shouted "we are, we are tarts!" They weren't tarts...so tart ran out for the ladies who were tarts! I feel the volunteer missed a trick to be honest. Whilst not in Wantage they are on the Oxford/Wantage bus route and if they got their act together they could be quite a sort after venue.

Three of us had lunch at The Volunteer today. Excellent service. good food with chef who was willing and able to rustle up alternative vegetarian options and friendly helpful staff. A real find and we'll be back.

Despite having a limited vegetarian menu, the food was fresh, tasty and very good. I had mushroom soup to start which was bursting with flavour and my husband had the thai fishcakes (his first choice was the pulled pork and stilton croquettes but the butcher hadn't delivered them so weren't available! I then had a mushroom & cauliflower melting pot, which was again very tasty but very rich. My husband had fish & chips which he thoroughly enjoyed and said the chips were to die for!

We went a little while ago for Sunday lunch after reading the positive reviews. It is a friendly place with helpful staff and the decor is nice. The food was fine, but not excellent as some was a little bland and not warm enough.

Popped in here for a quick Sunday lunch with family. It's great value and the staff were welcoming. Food is reasonably priced and tasty. I was really impressed when I enquired about a vegetarian roast option and the chef offered to whip up a veggie wellington on the spot. When it came it was tasty and well cooked. Had the crumble for pudding which was delicious and a nice modest portion which is perfect after a huge roast. Great place for a relaxed, good-value meal and judging by the packed events calendar on the wall it looks like it might be a good evening out too.

Our 2nd visit tonight for a meal and as it was on the first visit we were not dissapointed, beautifully presented and wonderful flavours. We have recommended to friends after our first visit and we will definately recommend to others. Also has rooms to rent so a definately must if your in the Wantage area.

Visiting the Williams F1 centre a couple of hundred yards away, we chose to stay at this little Pub/Inn and were glad we did.

Food= awesome Staff= lovely and professional Location= suitable for some but a bit 'out of the way' for others Rooms= small, compact, tiny but well presented and warm Price= reasonable Would I recommend? Yes

Had a lovely meal tonight would highly recommend the food was amazing and the service was brilliant it was the first time here since opening and it's really nice more people need to try it as very quite which is such a shame because it's really is top quality food and service . Will be returning very soon

Went for the 'fish and fizz' last night, partly out of curiosity and partly to support the new owners' efforts to revitalise the pub (which had been closed for some time while the railway bridge was being rebuilt).

Friendly and efficient staff, comfortable atmosphere, and delicious, well-presented food. Recommended.

Me and 3 friends went for lunch on Monday. We all had sandwiches/baguettes which were served with salad and chips, and it was delicious! Everything was perfect, the lunch menu is very reasonably priced, in fact very cheap but beautiful fresh food! Can't wait to try the evening menu!

I booked The Volunteer Inn for a lunch celebrating my parents 25th Wedding Anniversary. I honestly couldn't fault a thing. From start to finish the staff were helpful and friendly. They even catered for the fussy family members who were picky about the menu, saying they would order in special options for them (as long as they knew in advance).

On arriving we where the only people in the pub, another couple arrived just after us. No music playing after 20 minutes which it needed when so few people are in the pub. We ordered food this arrived in good time and all courses both starters and main meals where excellent. A real find when wanting food a little more special then pub grab in wantage or grove. The only thing to let this evening down was the lack of staff service. Two young ladies on this evening both polite but neither tried to service us any more then they needed to. We had to go to the bar to order out drinks when eating, when we where asked if we wanted pudding we said no within minutes a bill was almost thrown on the table with the comment there's your bill, no would you like coffee or any more drinks etc. What a let down. We tried this evening to see if I wanted my birthday meal here unfortunately we will not be booking due to the lack of service, not due to the excellent food. Phones and laptops should never be used when you are working behind a bar espically when you have paying customers.

Joining friends for a catch up lunch, we arrived at 12.30hrs and the place was empty; but were greeted by with warm smile and choice of tables.

We have just returned from the Volunteer Inn for lunch. The Caesar salad did not contain the parmesan cheese, egg or anchovies listed on the menu, my sister in law's ploughman's did not contain any cheddar or onion (again specified on the menu) and my brother's spuds were not cooked and the omelette was like leather. This is after having waited for 1 hour for it to be served. In fairness when we complained the staff did understand why we were so unhappy - and offered to recook my brother's meal - but we did not want to wait another hour for an omelette. Having had some money taken off we left extremely dissatisfied at out Bank Holiday experience, which was supposed to be a treat of a day out.

stayed on saturday night as was going to frinds birthday party not far away welcome was ok beer just ok had no lights going to rooms which was not good in morning because we wasnt out there by 11.00am had 2 calls for us to leave even thou answered the first time wont be going back next time in area

We recently visited the Volunteer for the first time to try their Sunday lunch. The food was wonderful! We had amazing slices of roast beef with freshly cooked vegetables including a delicious cauliflower cheese! We decided to try the two course lunch and went for starters and a main. We spotted the delicious looking sweets on our way out from the restaurant and we wished we had left space for another course - maybe next time! I would highly recommend a visit to this very welcoming restaurant and wish them every success for the future. Finally I wanted to mention we were shown the bedrooms that are available to book. Very clean and comfortable if you have guests coming to stay in the Wantage and Grove area. Very good value too!

We had a family meal at The Volunteer as we wanted to see what it was like after re-opening a couple of years after it was last open. There was only one real ale on tap which was a bit sad, but it was a very nice local beer, from Bellingers, literally a couple of hundred yards away.

My wife and I popped in for lunch and it was great. Friendly service, great food and excellent value - highly recommended!

Dropped in for dinner on a whim, and had a brilliant meal! The steak was cooked to perfection, even the peas where lovely. The staff where jolly and brought the food out in no time. Would defiantly visit again.
