Great ciders, great food and a huge side salad to go with it! The only negative (if it even counts as one) is that it's very small and only has a few large tables, so book well in advance!

I only visit for a Good Pint of Beer, usually after completing my grocery shopping. Wantage is an ancient town, birthplace of Alfred the Great, but it in line with a lot of towns in England it seems like it has changed a lot over the last 20 years. However, walk into The Shoulder of Mutton and you can experience a little taste of "GB" that epitomises 'unique' and all that is good about Great Britain. The Beers are as good as any I have come across (pretty sure there were 21 'Real Ales' available today. This is only the second time I visited and I sat by a Bar, almost in an 'alley' with some regulars, who I am pretty sure I met on my First visit. I would encourage anyone to visit. I am confident the Food would be good too. But as a 'Pub experience' this takes some beating.

We visited this Pub on 28th November. We booked a table first which was fortunate as it appeared that there were only 3 tables and judging by this pub's reviews I would expect them to be all taken by 7.30pm so book if you don't want to be disappointed.I was driving so only had a half of the lowest alcohol cider which was very sad as I'd love to have tried more. Why not offer cider and beer by the wine glass so that customers can try a few types? We were soon asked for our food order and we all chose pies which seem to be a speciality here! Our food arrived promptly, each pie accompanied by a huge salad and new potatoes. I found the fact that the potatoes were cut into quarters a bit strange as I would prefer to have whole potatoes. I suspect this is done to make sure they cook quickly but my solution would be to serve some oven roasted new potatoes which could be pre-cooked and kept hot without losing flavour. I would also offer hot veg instead of a salad in the winter as not everyone likes cold and hot food together. We were too full for a pudding and had a coffee which was in a mug -another suggestion here, offer a cup as not everyone likes a full mug of coffee after a meal. This is a lovely place with really good food and lovely staff with a few tweaks (change the lighting which is a bit over powering in a restaurant and I would move all the games from restaurant room to make space for a small table.)

My wife and I went to this restaurant on Saturday the 18th of October. What a fantastic place. The venue has been sympathetically renovated to retain all its charm. The service was incredibly friendly. My wife only wanted half a cider but the very helpful barman let her try a couple before purchasing, a really nice thought.Peter the owner, was very engaging and nothing was too much trouble. He even brought out some complimentary sweets and gave my wife some poppadoms to take home to cook.Forget the fact its just very good vegetarian food but just very good food and excellent service. We shall return.

First trip to the Shoulder of Mutton and we definitely will be returning. The food was great and the atmosphere was very relaxing. The homemade houmous and veggie curry were delicious and we all left with a very full belly! The menu doesnt really cater for young children, but when we made our reservation, Peter said that he would be more than happy to rustle something up for our 3 year old son that was not on the menu. We really appreciated this. The restaurant isnt the biggest. In order to avoid disapointment, I recommend that you make sure to book in advance to ensure you can be accommodated. The selection of real ales and vintage ciders was fantastic. The landlady allowed me to sample some beers before I bought which I thought was a really nice touch and to be honest, i could have easily stayed all day! This is by far the best pub in Wantage.

Anyone familiar with Wantage will know that there is no shortage of pubs, but the Shoulder of Mutton stands out amongst the crowd. The Shoulder is very much a traditional pub, serving a wide range of real ales and ciders, and is a great place to visit if you want to try something new - the bar staff are incredibly helpful and will happily provide tasters of any of the beers or ciders on tap to help you decide what pint to purchase. The Shoulder has a really homely atmosphere, and the food is absolutely fantastic. If you are deterred by the veggie-only menu, DON'T BE! The food is excellent and I guarantee you will enjoy it so much you won't even notice the lack of meat. Peter and the team have clearly worked hard to make sure the Shoulder offers something different to the other pubs in the town and it has paid off.

If you like your beers, this is the place to be. The walls comemorate Best Pub Awards and with a selection of 12+ beers and other CAMRA affiliated drinks to choose from you can see why. The place is smallish, has a warm, friendly, local pub atmosphere, and the landlord treats you as if you are part of the family. The idea of a vegetarian pub is a novel one. Although I am no food critic, I thought the food was a bit bland. The pies and tortilla omelette were a little dry to my taste, and all the food contained lots of plain tasting potatoes. The salad portions are large, though again could do with something extra rather than just a drizzle of dressing. Overall a great place to try different beers, though feel that the vegetarian food option can really offer a lot more.

There were loads of delicious Real Ales on offer, so we had to try a number of different 'halves' until we found our favourite, 'Feckless'. We couldn't decide what to eat as everything on the menu sounded yummy & it's so unusual as vegetarians to be able to choose anything we fancied. The portions were generous so having eaten our bowl of pistachios we managed to finish our main courses (Mushroom Risotto, Lentil and Cheddar Flan & Mushroom & Stilton Tart) with enormous accompanying mixed salads, but sadly had no room for a pudding. I visited the Shoulder of Mutton with my family on a Saturday evening for dinner. Ironically, given the name, the pub now offers a completely vegetarian menu, with everything prepared freshly & dishes changing depending on what ingredients the chef has available. For starters, we shared sweet potato pokharas which were served with a houmus dip. For main course, I had butternut squash tortellini in a tomato & mascarpone sauce, which was really tasty. Other options on the menu included a potato, cheese & leek bake, 'mutton' curry and a vegetable tart. All the main courses were served with a huge bowl of salad (leaves, cucumber, cherry tomatoes, mixed beans & cous cous). All of the food our table had looked & tasted delicious. The main meals cost about £10 each, which was really good value considering the generous portions that we got. We felt very welcomed by the landlord, who took the time to have a chat with us in between serving our drinks, taking our orders, cooking our food & serving it to us! We also liked that there are a stash of board games in the pub, so we had a fun game of Jenga while waiting for our food. It is worth booking ahead if you visit for food, because there are only a few tables for diners. A great choice for a delicious, filling dinner. Highly recommended.

Having been drawn in by the promise of award winning and varied real ale, one can only drool in anticipation at the beer and food menus as you wait at the bar.Friendly welcoming staff are happy to offer samples of the former, whilst the latter is sampled in flavours and smells drifting from the newly refurbished kitchen. We have eaten in there several times now and often pop in for a cheeky pint whist in town. The mutton has proved itself to always be an open and welcoming place with plenty of atmosphere and entertainment provided by staff and clientèle alike.highly recommended

My husband and I went to the Mutton last Thursday for a drink, we were served by a lovely 2 top quality bar staff who were very attentive to our requirements and couldn't have been more helpful. After smelling the delights Peter was cooking in the kitchen we decided to stay for dinner, we weren't disapointed, the curry was delicious, full of flavour, I would highly recommend people to try the exquisite food served in the Mutton. Wantage do you realise what you have on your doorstep??????

After seeing all the good reviews, we decided to have lunch there. The beer selection is very impressive, and they even offered a taster as I didn't know what to choose. First time I had beer in a shot glass :) The beer was really nice - traditional bitter for me. the first thing I like about the menu, there was no quorn, burger etc... pseudo meat dish. This is a vegetarian restaurant and proud of it. And they should. The food was explained by the owner. I went for falafel and risotto, my wife for wasabi peas and "mutton" curry. As you would expect in a vegetarian restaurant mutton was just a name:). The food was delicious, plentiful and very tasty. The ingredients are way better than what you can find in a supermarket, the owner explained that they are sourced locally and you can taste the difference. The side salad was very impressive (beetroot were very earthy for example) Overall a great experience, nice atmosphere, great food and good value. This might become our local, even for a meat lover :)

Under a five minute walk from the centre of Wantage, the Shoulder of Mutton is the kind of ‘local pub’ that I’ve only been able to dream of in Cardiff. The owner has created something special here. The interior has a personality and charm that enhances the warm welcome you’ll get from staff and the cheerful locals that seem to love the place too. The food cooked and served by the owner – who seems like a great bloke – is home-cooking at its best. There’s a fine range of real ale’s behind the bar, including one made by the owner, to be enjoyed on their own or as an accompaniment to the dishes on offer. My partner and I shared an impressive Spanish Tortilla as a starter but if eaten alone would make a meal, and it melted in the mouth. For mains we shared – we always share half of each other’s meals – a Cheese, Leek, Onion & Potato Bake and a Spicy Red Lentil & Cheddar Flan. Other options on the menu included ‘Mutton’ Curry, Butternut Squash Ravioli, Gnocchi and Creamy Mushroom & Cepe Risotto. Like the Tortilla you could taste that they were both made with good quality ingredients. The bake was hearty but not heavy, and the Flan had a great texture and well balanced flavours. Encouraged by the owner we decided to squeeze in dessert. We had a little bit of everything left on the menu which included a home-made chocolate brownie and flapjack, and some top quality ice cream. We are now considering a move to Wantage!

This was our second meal at the Mutton and it was fantastic. We had the vegetable curry which was delicious and very well spiced. It was served with naan and rice. My partner had butternut squash ravioli in tomato sauce, excellent as well. Service from Peter and his staff is faultless, the selection of real ale is exceptional. Overall a very nice evening!

What a fantastic pub. Why aren't there more places like this? It was heaven for us as I am a vegetarian (who loves real ale) and my husband is still telling everyone about the beer. The staff were really friendly and Peter who cooked and served the food treated us very well. The food was delicious and the portions large. There were large vases of fresh flowers on all the tables and the pub is cosy and snug. Although it is 40 mins drive for us, we will go again regularly as there is nothing comparable in the Witney area.

A wonderful friendly place in Wantage with a perfect host. There is a selection of real ales that a connoisseur would be amazed to see, the Mutton also houses a vast selectin of spirits, wines and also provides a menu cattering for vegetarians. You have to go and experience the hosts hospitality to believe it.

I visited with a group of friends and family who varied greatly in age and tastes, and we all thoroughly enjoyed our lunch. The barman, owner (Peter) and other customers were so friendly, and Peter is an attentive host and excellent chef who clearly adores what he does. He took time to tell us about the ingredients, including some fantastic Sussex cheeses, and we felt really well looked after. Food was fresh and tasty, the menu (vegetarian) has a good and varied selection, and the place itself is light and attractive, and from the musical instruments, games, wide selection of ales and fab ciders, it looks like it would be a great place for evenings too! Will definitely return.

I went in here with my mum and boyfriend as we were being thoroughly indecisive as to what we wanted for dinner, and 'somewhere with beer' won the vote, and I'm very glad it did. The food was fresh, homemade and delicious! We ordered a selection of nibbles which were so great that we ordered more within minutes. There is a very wide selection of beers and ciders, which were clearly well kept. Also, the puddings were delicious and enough to feed a small army. Very friendly staff who were happy to chat with my slightly (read 'very') eccentric mother. I shall be returning.

I was recommended to try this pub out a few months ago, but only made the effort yesterday, let me tell you, I am kicking myself that I left it so long!!I was lucky enough to choose a night when there was folk music, belly dancers and barber shop singers on (I am told by the extremely friendly regulars that this is a regular occurance!) The atmosphere was electric! Having only planned on staying for one or two pints, I ended up staying the whole night, partly due to the atmosphere and my new found friends but also because the beer was so damn scrumptious!! The hangover the next day was well worth it!!This is a place not to be missed by anyone with half a brain!!I have read in another review that The Shoulder of Mutton is White Horse Pub of the Year, I am not surprised. I can honestly say, I have never been anywhere quite like it (and I've tried a few!!)This will certainly NOT be my last visit, with the ever changing choice of real ales, I don't think I will ever be away!!

What a little gem, I can't fault this place! Fabulous food, atmosphere, and service. From the minute you walk in you are treated like one of the family.I am not personally a vegetarian but the food is delicious and very plentiful. The landlord makes a brilliant pub exceptional! He has earned the title of White horse pub of the year. I can't imagine there are many establishments such as this so national pub of the year should be a walk in the park!!If you are a real ale drinker, a lover of food and good entertainment, this will be right up your street.Thank you Peter and massive well done!!
