This is our second stay at The Victoria, and for the second time the food and service has let down, what could have been a great stay. The vegetarian curry was so ordinary - undercooked broccoli and cauliflower with curry sauce. How easy would it have been to add some yogurt or almonds? A popadom? Something to make this worthy of being in the menu at £18. I had to ask for chutney, but the curry was still uninspiring. And no one - not any of the 4 staff who served us - asked if the meal was okay. Basic service etiquette, surely? All of this was passed on the following morning, but no recompense was offered - we still paid in full. We also had a disappointing meal last time, so for us this is our last stay at The Victoria. Shame, because the location is fab.

Came just for dinner and left feeling disappointed. The service cpuld have been more attentive. The restaurant ambience was poor and would have really benefitted from some low level background music. But the food was most disappointing. A real shame for what could be a real destination restaurant in a stunning g location.

I have been to the Victoria a few times 1st time seven years ago with my late husband and our 1 year old dog it was great then and has been every time I have been over last few years. Staff are friendly and love dogs a big plus for me. Todays fixed price set Sunday lunch was perfect for me the pheasant starter followed by cod loin with gnocchi and crab was excellent light and beautifully cooked

I am reposting this review as nobody at the Restaurant has the time to respond to negative views. Trying to find the car park at night is somewhat of a challenge. Very badly illuminated and sign posted. Eventually we parked, still in darkness, My wife got out of the car and was terrified and panic stricken by the verocity of the barking from, what we later established was an extremely a large dog, we also later established that we had parked next to a dogs cage, with a number of dogs in it. I have attached pictures and a video of the car park. Getting from the car park to the Restaurant entrance, was in my mind extremely dangerous. IT can only get better. At 18 .45 we found the restaurant, not so busy however, the greeting from the staff was both friendly and professional and the ambience and décor, were very pleasing and relaxing. The Restaurant Manager, was welcoming, professional and had a good sense of humour. The wine list is excellent, with a good variety of wines at various price points. The Menu had a good variety of dishes, with a wide range of prices. For a starter, we both chose the Prawns, an excellent choice, good size and a good number of Prawns, deep fried in a light Tempura batter. My Main course was a Cannon of Lamb, fantastic choice, well cooked with great flavour and hot, as it should be. We now come to the two Elephants in the room, I will leave the larger of them to the last. It is now about 19.40 and we feel that we are sitting in the middle of a dogs home, some well behaved but others a damn nuisance. We are dog lovers but this was totally over the top. Diners should be prewarned of the preponderance of these animals. Now to the larger of the Elephants. At this stage I will inform you that we have owned an upmarket Restaurant and been involved in the Hospitality business for some years. My Wife ordered the !/2 a Lobster at £31.50, whilst it is not necessarily in High season, she would have expected to more than three or four small mouthfuls and a plate covered in greenery. Why spoil, what is a good reputation, by ripping your clients off with this type of dish. Very disappointed that didn't choose, what is a huge variety of local fish, other than this monstrosity.

Great food at a great price too! Broccoli tempura to start was cooked in a really light batter and the flavours were subtle but very good. Haddock for main was again very good and the sauce was amazing. Chef's flair continued with the mille feuille, delicious brandy soaked cherries and a lovely nutmeg ice cream on the side 😊

We know this part of Norfolk very well as a holiday spot. We have been coming to the Victoria on and off for years. It is now a hotel that serves lunch and dinner NOT a pub. We booked Sunday dinner and I was happy to find that despite an 8pm. table there was still roast beef available. It was delicious 😋! Good portion of medium rare sirloin accompanied by crispy roast potatoes, a fine Yorkshire pudding, a good assortment of vegetables and cauliflower cheese. A few years back I rated a bunch of places local to home and I think the Victoria would have only been beaten by Cliveden We did have room for pudding and thank goodness we did. The rice pudding was spectacular! Unusual but inspirational flavours. The staff were happy and attentive. We took our well behaved dog and saw a couple of others in the restaurant. We chose to come here as it’s dog friendly. Perhaps ask for a quiet table if you’d prefer not to be around dogs when you eat. Overall highly recommended and excellent value. Thanks all.

We were hoping for a nice peaceful lunch. But, with 16 dogs also in the orangery part of the restaurant, it was anything but. Apart from being a bit smelly there was barking everytime a dog moved! Then a dog relieved itself on the floor which was not brought to the attention of the waiting staff and was just wiped up with a tissue. Totally unacceptable in a restaurant. We are not dog haters as we have had dogs ourselves, but with the ridiculous focus on dogs rather than humans it spoils what could be a nice experience. It wasn't that long ago that animals were not allowed where there was food according to strict health rules. Remember some people are allergic and some children are frightened of dogs. There should be a separate area if dogs are to be allowed in restaurants.

We visited as are often in the area being quiet local. We were shown to a table given some bottled tap water and menus-food seemed very good…..waited around half an hour and despite the people around us having tables cleared and orders taken plus more people being seated by at least 4 different waiters/waitresses we were ignored!-left alone with with a bottle of tap water! No one asked us if we would like a drink from the bar or if we were ready to order some food. (Which is why we were there and the question they asked us when we went in!)they were not even that busy! We decided to accept our fate and then enjoyed waiting to see if any of the servers would actually look up from serving the surrounding tables.Which is after all a waiters job! We were in the patio with just 3 other occupied tables. Anyway we walked out-we did tell them why on way out! Would suggest some staff training! Good news we probably saved about £70 and found somewhere down the road that welcomed our custom and money. Safe to say won’t bother at The Victoria again. The funny thing is that I understand you are not aloud in for just a drink or coffee-you have to order food or be a hotel guest!?

We called in here, initially for drinks, prior to walking into Wells across Holkham beach. Since we were last here that is now not possible due to a change of ownership and policy. We therefore decided to change our plans and have lunch on the patio then walk later in the day. We chose a mixture of the tapas dishes, which we all excellent. I did not notice any statement on the menu that a 10% service charge would be added to the bill, so to keep the peace with my wife, I did not question it with the waiter. It is a gripe of mine that service charges are not shown as discretionary. That issue aside, I would eat here again.

As seems common reading other reviews, we went to the Victoria after walking around Holkham Hall. There were two members of staff (no customers) who refused to serve us drinks as we were not staying at the hotel. We felt like making use of the vintage muskets off the wall. It was very wet outside, and it put us off eating or staying here in the future. My dad lives in Wells and he affirmed that the hotel has a reputation for having rude staff and to avoid. Shame as obviously we will be back, but we won't be returning here.

Noticed the ridiculous and unfair reviews from people who have not actually stayed at the Victoria but were unable to get a pint so decided to post one star reviews. Clearly the management have decided to change the business model to even out custom fairly for guests over the year, and much more sensibly the locals who work here. Having just returned from a weekend at the Victoria I can see why, and it works. The 5 star review is entirely down to the absolutely wonderful staff who made our weekend so special, a genuinely lovely group of people who all went the extra mile. DB&B was very good value, the breakfast was superb, and all of local provinance. The complimentary mini bar a terrific surprise, access to all of the Holkham Estate and a parking pass for all of their various attractions was another unexpected plus. A surprise gem. Top tip, it's a very dog friendly hotel, great if you love dogs, if you don't the Ancient House next door is dog free so bear that in mind when booking.

I took my mother for lunch at The Victoria after a lovely walk around the grounds of Holkham Hall (which I’d highly recommend). From the moment we walked in to book a table right through to the time we left I could not praise the friendliness of all the staff highly enough. The young lady that booked us our table was extremely warm & welcoming. Then the young man who welcomed us into the restaurant was extremely friendly too. He also had time for my pet dog and was quick to offer her a snack. When we sat at our table the staff were extremely attentive, very polite and it made our lunchtime experience a really pleasant one. On top of that the food was delicious, (the Cottage pie was perfect !) the house red was spot on and I would certainly recommend The Victoria to anyone looking for good food, a warm welcome and friendly staff. Lovely welcome from the staff, very comfortable traditional country inn style decor with a crackling fire on a blowy day in February. Excellent place for a pit stop after a walk on the beach and in the woods. Menu isn’t cheap but is good value, and varied. The tapas style small plates make a great alternative for a light lunch or the inevitable soup or sandwich. We chose to have just a main course, seduced by the delicious sounding halibut with mussels, leeks & cider sauce, & the cod with chorizo rarebit- both were beautifully cooked, lived up to expectations and for us required no additional sides. Our dog was also made very welcome, homemade treats provided once we’d given permission and the staff are clearly all animal-lovers. Having said that, we discussed accommodation with our waiter and it was good to hear that the dog-friendly rooms are quite separate from the animal-free rooms. Shows the thought that has gone into ensuring everyone’s comfort and enjoyment.

So disappointed, we went as a family of 8 for my sons birthday ( to be followed by a bike ride). Very limited menu, children meals were tiny, I had a 7 &8 yr old and they asked if their tiny square of fish and 3 potatoes was a starter? My children love veg but after asking for veg for my children ( they love veg most veg) but cabbage and pickled cucumbers was not for most! My pudding looked amazing but very flavourless. My children both orders pancake and ice for pudding, one came and my son kindly let his sister have the first one, nothing came for my son, we ask two members of staff for our missing pudding, over 1/2 hour and nothing. Unfortunately 30 mins after we had all finished pudding, my son ( who birthday it was) said I do to want to wait any longer. So we paid and walked walked out. For dessert, the four cheeses with Armagnac were a great choice. The service by Flo and the team was attentive, and the restaurant had a great ambiance. Having grown up in the area and previously frequented the place just for drinks (when we perhaps didn't want a meal), we were always made welcome. Now, today we have been told unless you are booked in for a meal you can't be served drinks as its "not bar!". How pretentious and business naive is that to turn away footfall business. Won't recommend and won't come back until management are changed or change their business direction. Clearly that explains how QUIET it was with people using the car park to simply go walking!

On arrival although the place is open between lunch and evening meal times, we were immediately told that they only sold drinks with meals and we were therefore unable to just buy drinks. Me and my 76 year old mother and two primary school children arrived at the Victoria after a walk on Holkham beach. Having missed the coast hopper back to Wells we had to wait an hour for the next one so were in need of shelter and refreshments - despite the rest of England having balmy weather, Norfolk was in fact 12 degrees and we were cold and fed up. On arrival at reception I light heartedly explained our dilemma, politely asking if they could host us for an hour while we wait for the next bus. The response was a flat no - they could not serve food or drink to any non residents, and the ‘sitting room’ despite being completely empty was for guests only - we had to leave. Upon explaining that we’d be keen to buy some food and drink, we were cold, it was drizzling outside and we were stranded for an hour etc etc they stood their ground and insisted that despite the hotel common parts being completely empty, everywhere was for residents only and please could we leave. I’ve been hearing mixed reviews about this place for a while now, and my experience today has proven then all to be right; unfriendly and not a place I’d ever return to. In its hey day this place was great, no more. Hospitality is having a tricky time at the moment and this place is doing it no favours.

Enjoyed the venison on the Norfolk restaurant menu. Staff efficient and polite but shame there is no atmosphere. Maybe a bit of background music would help ?

What a fabulous place!! Situated right on the waterfront of the River Bure, where you can watch the comings and goings of all the boats and their occupants, most of whom know what they're doing, but some beer swilling oiks are absolutely clueless in the art of sailing and boat craft in general but seem hellbent on causing as much carnage as they can!! It's very comical to watch, and in the Swan inn you're in the perfect place to do so. The property itself is wonderful, genuinely old with loads of character, and the food is amazing, plentiful portions and of very good quality. We arrived almost at the end of lunch service after a boat trip on the Broads, but were greeted with warmth and cheer, offered a seat overlooking the river, and enjoyed a very fine, if belated lunch, which was demolished with gusto. Well worth a visit when in Horning. There are other hostelries in the village so it would be unfair to attempt to compare the Swan with the others, but our experience here was VERY favourable!!

We have visited this pub a couple of times over the last few weeks as it’s on the route of a walk from Cley up to the nature reserve. On both occasions, we only chose from the lunch light bites, which are on the back of a beer mat. On the first visit, the food was excellent. On the 2nd visit, our food was just about warm, although it was still tasty enough. We felt that it could have been served straight away, rather than sitting in the kitchen. Our other halves were pleased with the choice of ales.

Excellent pub. Good food which exceeded our expectations. Great service from the lady behind the bar. Let us order despite us cutting it fine near cut off time just before 2PM and even allowed us to add desert. Warm and welcoming with roaring log fire. Ideal if you are visiting Hickling Broad nature reserve at the end of the road. We look forward to going back in the future.
