The Victoria Inn in Cornwall, Isles of Scilly

We went to OUR LOCAL to celebrate my husbands birthday, we all ordered (2 carvery, 1 fish and chips and a steak for my husband) carvery was ready, we all had our meals, but my husband didn't have his pepper sauce, still no pepper sauce 5 mins later, his steak was cold, and I was told because it was med-rare it wouldn't be hot!!!! Lol!! A "fresh" meal was prepared, the steak was over medium the chips and onion ring were NOT fresh, they had been reheated and he didn't finish his meal.. Bare in mind we had all finished before he'd even started his FRESH meal.. I really wasn't happy as I felt awful eating my food whilst my husband was sat there with nothing (on his birthday!!) We had an apology for the pepper sauce, and a refired meal that was NOT UP TO STANDARDS. Oh and a £2.50 discount.. I'm absolutly fuming and will not be eating here again, which is a shame because we've enjoyed every other time we have dined here.. I will be speaking to the owner within the week as I don't think that it's acceptable to give me a refund of £2.50 when he didn't even eat half his meal!

Very varied and tasty carvery but were a bit mean when I asked if my grandson could have a second Yorkshire. We only put a small amount on his plate as he isn't a big eater so seconds on veg would have been nice. They did give him a 2nd Yorkshire in the end though! Service was good and fast. Would go again.

I think we made a mistake by coming here during the week. We came with friends, looking forward to the carvery. Such a disappointment. The meat was very nice and plentiful BUT the veg and potatoes appeared to have been reheated from lunchtime : very soggy, mushy veg and the potatoes looked grey. The stuffing was dried up squares and inedible. The puddings were very expensive for what there was. I'm sure, by reading some of the reviews, that the weekends are better. But I don't think we will take the chance again. To cap it all, the area above the carvery was being painted whilst we sat eating. Not conducive to a good atmosphere.

9 family members came to the Vic last night 25th for a birthday meal for my son we was there at 5 pm as requested, although there was 9 of us ,we were squashed in on a table for 8 , my son in-law got the spare chair that was up against the wall and put on the end of the table to be more comfortable , only to be told by the blonde waitress,not to sit there as they couldn't get around the next table, which we understand, even though there was plenty of room, we never made a fuss,so my son in-law was eating his food on the corner of the table, which was very uncomfortable for him , although we sat there eating our food and desserts,,and up to the point of finishing and leaving the table, the table at the side of us , which he was supposedly blocking stopping staff from going around, wasn't even used ,the people was just turning up, when we was leaving, perhaps the waitress should of checked the time of when they were coming or even better layed the table for 9 as booked,as my son in-law was uncomfortable for no reason, , The food was good except for the steak and ale pie, it was very dry and no gravy in the pie ,I had to ask a young lad with dark hair to get some gravy for me and showed him if was all dryed out,he didn't make anything of it and got some gravy from the carvery,which took the taste of the steak and ale pie away, I really should off sent it back,but didn't want to embarrass my son on his birthday,in front of all family members, after spending nearly £200 for all meals and desserts, I asked the dark hair waitress for a full receipt,so I could see what my family members owe me,,she mumbles something,gave me a receipt ,my cousin wife was there and went back and said to me Infront her husband, how she wasn't helpful and stood there pressing the till with one had ,and the other hand on her hip ,she gave the impression she couldn't be bothered ,I know they were all very busy, due to having a band playing later in the evening, but although the pie was rubbish,the thing that upsets me most as we booked for 9 and all put on a table for 8 , leaving my son in-law uncomfortable on edge of table,when he could've stayed on the end , being more comfortable,as nobody turned up , hopefully if there is a next time we will get a table for the right amount of people,so nobody feels uncomfortable, the rest of the staff was lovely and friendly and helpful but the 2 waitress and the young boy we had ,needs more training in customer service and being more helpful and perhaps with a smile as no one even came over to check it the food was ok ,as stated when asked for gravy and showed the young lad how dry the pie was ,it was ignored,

Called in for a Sunday carvery and as normal it was hot and tasty. The cost was reasonable and shall be returning again soon. We have been here several times and each occasion we have been looked after by the staff very well. Really great location right on the roadside and easy to get to.

Booked in for our first meal here before attending the Truro v Torquay football match. The food - the day after it was still on my mind. It was so good, great value for money and very tasty. The service - a couple of our friends were late joining us but the team were very relaxed and let us take our time. All in all it was a first class experience and even though we live miles away we've already spoken about taking the drive down for another lunch. This was all the while the pub had been given Fanzone statue for the travelling Torquay fans, drinks chants bit all on good humour and well behaved. There are some pubs which wouldn't have coped but this team did and superbly too. Well done all.

Excellent carve, great selection of meats but could do with a few more vegs and sauces e.g parsnips and mint sauce but the staff were friendly and attentive

Came for my Dads 60th birthday with a party of 30, service was great and food delicious. They even made a personalised banner for my Dad. Everyone so friendly and helpful from the booking right through to the day.

Unfortunately not a good experience for us Saturday evening 29th March, hardly any meat for Carvery I got literally scrapings of what was left although we did better than people behind us who was told only chicken left and that would be 20 mins or so .. it was busy and a private function going on but surely they should know what bookings they have and have enough meat ready to cater for … also even though it says on dessert cabinet vegan available there was nothing other than sorbet that was dairy free when I asked very disappointing 🤦‍♀️

We celebrated Mother's Day here, and as usual, the roast was excellent. The complimentary Prosecco for my Mum was a lovely gesture, and the staff were wonderful. However, we were disappointed to find that the menu had changed since our January booking, removing the pizzas. This meant my nephew had nothing to eat, and sadly, my sister's family had to cancel, which was a real shame as it was intended as a joint treat for our Mum.

Beautiful food, we visited on Mother’s Day, I feel the restaurant was over booked cramming lots of tables into a tight space, and only allowing a 2 hour window.

The service is poor. Poor communication. Felt victimised when we were told to eat fast as the table was booked for other people in a few minutes. We asked for a birthday banner and it was not put up as promised. Staff were generally unfriendly and unwelcoming. More of a half star service

Came with a group ,one of my friends had a vegetable carvery believing it would come with something ,an alternative to the meat . We pointed this out to the waitress who was almost angry at my friend . Who got the menu to point out . I'm not sure what she was pointing out definitely says carvery . Not vegetables from a carvery! My friend pointed out that if you asked a vegetarian what a carvery would be they would say a nut roast . Waitress said well we don't do it . Needs to be more clear on the menu! Everyone was happy with the food. I personally didn't have dessert, very heavy no cheesecake ,pavlova, roulade . I would of thought these would be top sellers

Booked online which was straightforward and convenient, on arrival shown to our table and given time to peruse the menu, order for drinks and food taken promptly and the waitress was friendly, efficient and confident in her role, food came to the table in good time , two meals consisting of Chicken where not the best with the chicken being quite dry and tough to cut through, we mentioned to the waitress and she dealt with it very well and we where happy with the resolution offered by the staff , my only area of concern was the cleanliness of the area, the windows we sat next to where very dirty with dust, cobwebs and some dead flies, easily remedied with a daily clean, and our salt shaker was very rusty on cap where the salt dispensed from, overall happy with the visit and feel it’s a great venue but some general housekeeping would really help.

Lovely pub, we always go there when we are in the area. Outside area , restaurant and B&B.

Always have a great carvery and great service

I was disappointed in the carvery, the pork was tough, cauliflower cheese was tasteless, and the turnip was very watery. Staff were good, surroundings nice.

The only downside was the lack of a dessert option that was suitable for a diabetic.

Best food there I went with truro college and I got chips and after that a brownie

Myself and my husband thought we would call in for a breakfast today (Sunday 29th) just after 9.30. I went in first to ask a young girl if you were serving breakfast. She replied yes, sit where you like. I’ll find you in a sec. They wasn’t anyone else in the room, except the 3 girls, 2 behind the bar and the girl I spoke to who was sat near the door, with a laptop in front of her. Myself and my husband found a nice little sitting area. We sat and we waited and waited for someone to come with a menu. In the meantime, all we could hear was the seating girl and someone behind the bar having a conversation. Surely, seeing to customers would be their first priority. After about 5 minutes the seated girl, walked up with a menu and said, oh you can’t sit here this is for residents. I replied it wasn’t stated anywhere on the table. By there we had had enough and walked out. I definitely will not be recommending to anyone.

We stayed in Victoria Inn over the festive session. The room was comfortable, quiet and clean. The breakfast offering was very good and served with a smile. One thing to improve on is to service the room on a daily basis or at the very least provide fresh towels and toilet paper without needing to ask.

Didn’t think the carvery was anything special and quite pricy. The yorkshire puddings were burnt and the stuffing balls were rock solid. (Like they reheated then from the lunch time carvery. Very disappointing.)

We phoned in advance to see if the pub was dog friendly. We were advised dogs were welcome in the lounge bar. This turned out to be a sports bar. No roomy tables for dog space. Also, if we'd had a carvery we would have had to have walked it through passed the toilets. Better off visiting in the summer and sit outside.

A lovely Victorian hotel that reminds me of a Sherlock Holmes set. Good hotel, great breakfast, lovely staff.

Booked 2 weeks in advance and requested a gluten free meal required. On the day there were no gluten free Yorkshire puddings available. How much notice do they need? The carvery meal was poor, nothing special. Staff were friendly and helpful. I wouldn’t recommend the poor carvery possibly try something else. The website states that they cater for gluten free, not today unfortunately.

Had lunch carvery was nice staff a little out of sink. Asked for drinks gave order then food order, only to be approached few mins later ask for food order again had to say already given it. Once we sat to eat our carvery was approached asking if meal was ok, it was so said yes, only to be approached within few mins being asked again. Lovely staff but leave the customers be and give staff their own tables so customers don't get inundated with bring asked over and over. Not a complaint just our observation on service.

Should have posted this back in July, We were on holiday and called in for a carvery. The pub was very busy with it been quiz night so we had to sit in the covered area outside. Unfortunately, my wife's bag fell off the fixed seating and disappeared underneath out of sight. On not being able to see it when we were ready to leave, we feared the worst and spoke to the manageress Amber. As it was that busy, Amber told us she would look back on the cctv at the end of her shift. I received a voice message at around 1am saying she had found the bag by tracking us as we entered and left the pub. What a relief that was. So, a big thank you to Amber and her team.

A group of us arrived at The Victoria Inn for the first time after reading good reviews. On arrival we stated that we would like to have a meal at lunchtime. We were one of the first ones to arrive for lunch. We asked for a table and was told we would find you one, can you go to the bar and order your drinks. We were served the drinks and had to carry our own drinks to the table. As we sat at the table, I noticed new arrivals coming in being seated at their tables and then the waiter/waitress asking what they would like to drink. I didn't know I was in a self service restaurant, it threw me on arrival as I didn't see a square fast food takaway service window to order from. The fact that we had to take our own drinks to the table and other groups had table service, made me feel inadequate, sitting there feeling the value of my pound was lesser than anyone else's and subsequently feeling of a lower class. The carvery: I'll say it as it is, and it was the groups opinion, it was rubberised, the chef must be highly skilled he or she was able to make potatoes, vegetables, yorkshire pud, etc all taste the same and the meat, I must admit, gave me my monies worth I chewed on that piece of beef for 10 minutes, my jaw began to ache. My fellow companions said you are quiet today, I responded achingly my jaw aches, I didn't have the energy to pass words through my lips. Overall, very poor and I suggest the Victoria Inn staff look up diversity, inclusion and equality, we should all be treated the same and let all the other customers carry their drinks from the bar next time, like we did.

We went for lunch we both enjoyed our meals. It was good to see that they do a carvery not many do these days. It looked good and was very popular. We will try that next time. The two young staff on duty were friendly and helpful.

I ordered 5 bean chilli and rice and 5 bean chilli dirty fries. One of the dishes had been swapped for meat! Neither of us has eaten meat for over 30 years. This is not the first time this has happened here. My vegetarian breakfast a while ago was swapped for meat. We used to go to the Victoria every couple of weeks. After giving it a break for a while, it seems they still can't get it right. To be confronted with meat was nauseating. All we got was an apology and the meal changed. Neither of us could enjoy the food after that.

Lovely friendly staff and the carvery was spot on! Plenty to choose from. Unfortunately the parking is very tight in the carpark if you have a wider than average car but on road parking as available. Restaurant is spacious and was lovely and clean. Its a very popular place which speaks volumes.

Recently became a regular at this pub, one afternoon while watching the ufc that was being streamed a group came in celebrating a birthday, and started dancing in front of the projector, when being told to move out of the way they started getting confrontational and deliberately dancing in front of the projector again. one of the people dancing is in a relationship with one of the workers at the pub, after she had reported that we were ‘rude’ to her partner who was not working at the time we were barred from this pub.

We had carvery, it was fantastic, it's served all day every day. Nice friendly staff

We have always found this pub to be very pleasant. We had a big disappointment today, meat and veg were hard and burned Yorkshire puddings. Also a member of staff with a big attitude problem when told about it.

Had an event here this week. Absolutely awesome event, where the Victoria Inn team went out of their way to make sure everything was way above expectations. Lovely people. Venue was awesome. Food was lush. Also had accommodation there, and the bed was beaut. Thank you so much to all the guys and gals there ❤️

Visited on a weekday and it was a very pleasant experience! We sat in the beer garden with our dog which he loved and got ourselves a carvery. The guy serving the carvery was absolutely lovely and even did his best to find me some crackling at the end of the service! We came close to the end of the carvery service so there were only the ends left but that was our own fault for arriving later. I'd recommend coming closer to 12 to get the fresh out the oven bits! Thank you for a lovely meal regardless 😊🫶🏻

I was returning home from Truro, when I decided to have some lunch in the Victoria, so I hadn't booked.The very busy staff were able to squeeze us in🙏. My partner and I had the carvery, and delicious it was!! Choice of 3 sizes, and all the meats were available, and cooked to perfection, full range of vegetables, also delicious, plus all the trimmings 😋 I would definitely recommend this place for Sunday roast, I spent £30 on 2 roasts and 2 large soft drinks, and will definitely be going back!!!!😋😋😋🙏

Stayed for a few nights when visiting the area. A good central location in Cornwall with easy access to all attractions. Staff lovely, friendly and helpful, plus all the facilities you need either within the pub/restaurant with parking and breakfast included and a Co-op directly next door. Room was nice and big with 2 very comfortable double beds (not like the usual sofa-bed you get stuck with). Very quiet with no noise of the pub that we noticed. Breakfast was pretty good - option of fruit would be beneficial. Had the carvery in the evening which was all nice enough without being amazing. A few opportunities for improvement: Access is via a fire escape at the rear, which is not so attractive. The kitchen vents blast oily smelling air across your path when entering / leaving. The room although very nice overall had poor shower pressure and slightly inconsistent heat, and the window had to remain closed due to some smokers outside...probably kitchen staff having their deserved break, but it did not smell so nice coming in the room. Would definitely return due to to the comfort level being really good, plus the restaurant / shop convenience.

We had the carvery delivered and I'm honestly just gobsmacked at how it tasted to be honest. The cauliflower was very hard the meat very dry and pickled cabbage just ruined it .it didn't state this was on there

Highly recommend. we booked for Sunday carvery for 8 adults 2 children, my parents don't eat a lot, so was able to get small plates for them which was cheaper. On day Vic inn was extremely busy with another big party behind us plus everywhere else. Great selection of meat, not to fatty and very tender. good choice of veg and all was fresh and hot. The staff all worked very hard and nothing was to much trouble :) Thanks very much great job :)

A buzz of energy from the mixture of clientele. This is clearly very popular and for good reason. The beer was great and the menu varied. There was a carvery which was great and a good selection of other menu options, including specials.

We came here for dinner from a recommendation, The staff are extremely friendly and helpful, The food we all had different, 3 had the carvery and four of us had off the menu. The carverys were huge, 2 had the medium and one had the large, they would have lasted me 2 days. I had the seabass which was really nice on a bed of rocket, roast tomato and onion. The satay chicken burger was really good and the pulled pork burger also.

We stayed overnight at the Victoria. The gentleman that we checked in with was delightful and very friendly and escorted us to our room, which on first impressions was more than adequate for the price we were paying. However we started to notice a bad smell coming from the bathroom, and the following morning was so unbearable, we couldn't stomach entering to shower and brush our teeth. Looking at previous reviews this as been a long standing problem in room 3 and I feel it was poor judgement to allocate it. On reporting it to the female member of staff in charge she said she would report to the general manager which we hope was done because she seemed to be lacking in management skills. She was asked on several occasions for drinks to be topped up, surely she should be keeping an eye on the situation. After our breakfast, which like our evening meal we could not fault, I returned my room key to said member and thanked her for a lovely breakfast which was barely acknowledged as she couldn't be bothered to lift her head from the computer screen. Overall the food was amazing but some members of staff could do with some customer service training and room 3 should not be let until all issues have been resolved. Although I appreciated a reply about my above review, the reply was very unsatisfactory. I am not the first to bring this room to your attention, there are reviews going back over 3 years about this room, WHY LET IT?????

Lovely little Megan what a Star nothing is to much trouble for her being a bit disabled I needed help dishing up my carvery and she was extremely helpful if you ever need a helping hand ask for Megan she's brilliant

Had a Sunday carvery had not booked but managed to get a table staff were very friendly and the food was excellent definitely come back

On arrival for lunch, pre booked.. Was asked loads of times who I was, couldn't find me on system called me many people's name before finding correct person. Was shown to our seats where we was informed straight away .. we don't do table service here you need order at the bar, ok so asked for menus, brought Over and slammed on the table. Went to bar to order food the bar staff was more worried talking to the men than serving customer for food. Asked for assistance and told goto carvery they do it there. Ordered food ,. drinks brought to table by two men who were polite as anything and wished us a happy afternoon. Now was told get our food, which was adequately warm, I had asked three times for my latte that was ordered with the other drinks beforebeing brought over. Asked if everything OK. Asked girl who slammed the menus down to clean our table as there was five of us and that the children can have their pudding, the waitress took two plates away did not come back for the rest. We waited for her to return but 10 minutes later with no arrival from her I went and found her cleaning another table. Asked her again to clean table, someone else came in and done it, why?? If your cleaning one table clean it properly then go onto another table. The meals were OK, the service from certain female young staff was shoddy as anything, I will not be going back in a hurry, but as and when I do return I do hope that the service will be better than what we had today. I do think that staff should wear name tags so at least you can give praise or negative comments to the correct person when putting in a complaint and they know who your talking about. So all in all... Not. In no hurry go back even though just up the road from us. Reading other reviews I get where they are coming from. Staff need to look after customers, clean tables when asked, bring drinks etc when asked not leave for another member of staff to do your job that you get paid for. I know this much though whenMr& Mrs Trick had the place it was run a lot better than today!!!

Ventured to this location for two evening as it was convenient to where we were staying, but we were excited to find that there was a carvery on offer as well as the main menu. Carvery vegetables were a little discoloured but still edible all the same. The desserts were tasty and the young staff were mostly attentive.

Had a meal yesterday afternoon it was expensive for what we got. The manager was a bit of a bully. I don't think I will ever visit again, it was nice when St Austell Brewery owned it.

Came here last night for carvery. We all had a standard carvery, meat was lovely and plenty of veg, which wasn’t the warmest, but the plates are so small you have to pile all your veg on top of each other. The potatoes were awful, aunt bessies potatoes that were rock heard, it really let the meal down. I did tell the waitress and her response was she’d pass it on to the chef. So a carvery with no roast potatoes. We’ve been here many times before and never had a poor carvery like this..

Overnight stay, Good value for a family of 4 the staff were friendly. The disappointing thing was the food the alepie did not taste great and only had peas and small amount of mashed potatoes could of done with another veg and more mashed potatoes lot of money. I looked forward to a cooked breakfast was not much to it and the toast was of a poor quality and slightly burnt. The other thing was we were awaken around 6am by a worker moving stuff around outside. I had mentioned this at checkout. I wouldn't stay here again good price for the room but the food was disappointing as well as being waken up at 6am by worker/worker's.

Unfortunately, the expectations were not so surprising in the room and the breakfast did not seem so fresh either. It looked completely different from the pictures. The staff was very kind and helpful in everything and I can say that the staff deserves 5 stars

After reading the reviews we thought we’d try the pub . Wish we never ! We ordered a drink which took at least 15 mins to arrive , We had French onion soup that was on the specials they obviously don’t know what that actually is it was just a bowl of gravy with loads of onion no cheese no croutons no nothing , we then had to wait for spoons to eat it with for over 5 minutes then we went on to have the carvery hoping that would be better everything apart from the turkey tasted horrible now granted this was at tea time and was probably sat there for a long time but if you are serving carvery all day at least have some standards! Whilst we were in there we witnessed two complaints ……. Wish I had taken photos . Hindsight we should have took notice of the red flags at the beginning ! I just can’t understand how you can have good reviews and experience what we and the other two people did within such a short space of time . If I could give no stars I would have

2 roasts delivered with extra gravy. Great roast for the price.

A hidden gem of a pub, food is always super.

We took our grandchildren but my granddaughter couldn't eat as has a peanut allergy and wasn't guaranteed no risk. Not sure why a peanut cheesecake is on the menu shame as nice place to eat normally.

I went there for my Unc funeral and this place is awesome and beautiful. Peter Lazenby was my Unc. And my Aunty Mary there to arrangement. It was lovely . Iam from Woolavington bridgwater somerset. 👍

Had the tomato soup which I actually managed to split in two as it was more like a passata than soup. It was congealed around the edge and served with a thin slice of white bread for £6.50 I personally would of preferred if they had opened a tin of Heinz. My husband ate his lasagna and I ate his garlic bread. Left hungry and very disappointed.

Rooms nice and relatively quiet, accessible via outside stairs, service nice, food good.

Lovely friendly place, they do a fabulous carvery. Definately worth taking a trip here.

Excellent dishes particularly the carvery. And friendly helpful staff. We wish we had a pub/restaurant to compare near us .... in Hemel Hempstead, Herts.

Oh my goodness what has gone wrong at the Victoria, couldn't believe the difference since visiting back in February. Really disappointed with our food last night it was just terrible. I'm afraid we won't be coming back as the quality was always amazing but now absolutely awful
