I am now losing faith in Wetherspoons as the value for money place to eat, we came here last Wednesday, three adults and two children for our tea time treat as a family but I am sorry to say that, and speaking personally for my meal alone, which was the small mixed grill, the peas were cold, the chips were warm and one of the pieces of meat in the mixed grill which I believe was supposed to be beef was also cold and almost impossible to chew. Time was when we never had a bad word to say about this chain of pub eateries but since Covid, the only road they are travelling is downwards. Won't be rushing back.

It was Tuesday with steak offer, classic steak was a steak & chips, the gourmet was steak, chips, peas, tomato, mushroom & onion rings & a sauce. I went to order behind the bar was an elder lady that just screamed to everybody & not talk. I ordered 2 sirloin steaks rare with my choice of no sauce. They came with no onion rings, steaks very thin no taste like eating cardboard. Food was really poor really really poor has gone a long way down hill. Lady behind the bar that screams to communicate pull it in. Before I ordered somebody said they wished they had ordered on the app because of loud lady & now I know why. This is not cheap & cheerful anymore food is really poor

Nice place nice food but horrendous staff. Girl with pink and black hair behind the bar walking back and fourth slurping a drink loudly and then talking loudly, constantly repeating oh my god over and over and stating loudly why do I always get the sh** shifts! Staff all gathered at one end of bar chatting and eating and ignoring customers. Kitchen guy came and opened kitchen door to speak to his mate loudly telling her f this and f that. Other guy that was serving nearly gave me a heart attack came rushing in from outside and was shouting about how cute a dog was he’d seen again repeated over and over. No professionalism from any there and left most of lunch as was more like sitting in a playground

Sadly the worst Wetherspoons we have been in .Although the food was ok the staff were not . All they seemed to do was talk at one end the bar when customers were waiting to be served . You know what to expect with the food and menu at a JD Wetherspoons pub, however on this occasion we were disappointed with the slow service because of the level of staff on shift, covid or no covid customer service means a lot, the lady on the table behind ours waited for more than 15 minutes before anybody approached her. When we finally were attended to, the carry about Tablet that the waitress used to place our order apparently did not work and send the info into the kitchen, so we gad to do it all again, this also failed and the order had to be done the old fashioned (and much quicker) way, i.e written down on a piece of paper. More staff required and if the restaurant insists on modern technology, then make sure it works. This was not up to the normal standard expected of this restaurant chain and detracted from the normal dining experience.

Me and wife decided to go to Wetherspoons for our anniversary dinner here as nowhere else was open. We were greeted with an interrogation as to whether we live together even though they’ve seen us countless times before. We could past this if it were not bc the appalling service, we went to smoke out the back, my wife Leaving her bag on the seat to show we were still sat there, and we returned to see a barmaid clearing our table with her fingers in my nachos. She then assured us she had not touched the food and left it in front of us to eat. After Finishing our food and going for another Cigarette we n return to see the duty manager who be believe to be called Craig clearing our plates. He proceeded to ask us if we had just came in , when I said no we were sat at this table, he looked frustrated and told me We had to leave as there was a 2 hour time limit. I checked this with a friend of mine who manages another Wetherspoons to discover this rule is false! I was appalled! If I could rate 0 stars I would. DO NOT RECOMMEND!

Visited here on Saturday lunchtime for a quick pint and a bite to eat. Wouldn't say it was a particularly well looked after Wetherspoons mind and also a lot of the tables weren't clean. We ordered using the app and our order came fairly quickly. I got a skinny chicken burger but doubled up on the burger and it was really nice. I tried the Sriracha sauce for the first time but this wasn't very hot or tasty.. just kind of salty.

Just needed somewhere to get a quick bite having been searching round the countryside for somewhere to get lunch. When all else fails, you can get a meal quickly at Wetherspoons. Food: First visit - scampi and chips, very tasty. Ditto for chicken masala on second visit. Not expensive but on the Wednesday no mention of Boss Tim’s publicly stating that the Spoons would continue the special August deals “Eat out to help out.” Googled later and discovered all he said was that his burgers would be cheaper than take-away. COVID issues: Table we sat at second time was very messy. On placing order, asked for it to be cleaned. It wasn’t. When food arrived, server simply took a dodgy looking cloth and wiped it across half the table.

Typical Spoons, so you know what to expect. Great value across the board. All the usual beers, but have any of the guest beers as a preference. Meals start with breakfast, and continue through the day. Nice dining area away from the bar. Once the all day every day regulars had left it was much nicer. Can’t fault the staff.

Ended up quite disappointed with my first visit to this branch of Wetherspoons, which looks rather inviting from the outside. A good number of internal rooms, each looking quite cramped due to the seating arrangements. It was busy during this Monday lunchtime, but seats were still available. The tables were cleared reasonably quickly, but not cleaned, leaving much food residue to contend with. Had one drink, and fully intended staying for more plus lunch. However, there was only one poor guy serving behind the bar, and a huge queue had built up. Decided to cut and run, pleased that I did. There was one other older looking male member of staff lurking around, and whilst I did not have any direct dealings with him myself, his attitude did seem to leave a lot to be desired. I overheard his conversations with two separate customers, and he came across as being very rude and abrupt. Extremely poor customer service IMO. Won't be rushing back.

Having eaten at over 70 Wetherspoons pubs (some several times) initially this was by far the worst we have come across for steaks.First rump steaks (medium) were gristly, tough and virtually inedible. Duty manager quickly offered a change to the sirloin steak and this also had to go back as it was nearly raw and tuggy. Again inedible as you could not cut the meat with the steak knife provided. Duty manager very apologetic refunded the cost of the steaks and provided the BBQ chicken melt as our choice FOC.This was very good and at least enjoyable. Only reason we persevered was the fact we were staying in the hotel and had not seen any other attractive restaurants in town (plenty of Italians but not my preferred choice).Apple crumble was good as usual but very very hot initially.Breakfast next morning was good, enjoyed the breakfast wrap and my wife liked the eggs Benedict. Great value as tow breakfasts with unlimited hot drinks were less than £5

We stayed in Ripon for a week and ended up eating at The Unicorn (a Wetherspoons) three times in that week, as the food was so good. I think Wetherspoons - like a lot of chains - can differ between each one depending on the staff and chef(s). Well this is one of the good ones. Each time the service was friendly, the food was quick (but not too quick) to arrive, it was tasty and the prices - which usually included drinks - were so reasonable. Just goes to show that good food doesn't have to be expensive.Reading some of the negative comments, we can't comment on the rooms as we didn't stay here, but hubby used the gents toilet which was perfectly fine he says. We managed to get a table each time in the front part of the restaurant which was light and decorated really nicely.Would definitely recommend this Wetherspoons to anyone visiting Ripon.

A chance to visit The Unicorn as we were caravanning in the area. It was Fish Day but I had been disappointed sometimes with the fish at other Wetherspooons with the fish being cooked a bit too much and rather dry, and had started having something different but decided to try again. It turned out to be one of the nicest fish we have had at a Wetherspoons– it was very large, the batter had not been cooked too much and the fish was nice and moist inside and served with chips and mushy peas.It was priced very reasonably at £7.55 including an alcoholic drink. The tables were quickly cleared and tables wiped over.

The room was large and comfortable, usual facilities tea/ coffee, water, tv and excellent WiFi. The decoration was starting to look a bit tired but as we were only staying the one night it didn’t bother us too much. Parking was in the local council car park which is a three minute walk away and costs £2.50. We ate in the pub downstairs which was busy but wasn’t a problem . Consistency of food across Wetherspoons pubs is always good and their staff training and recruitment must be tip top. No matter how busy they are in this one they always go out of their way to check everything's ok and to acknowledge guests. The Unicorn also does good accommodation and we've stayed several times and booked for start of June. Usual Type Wetherspoons pub. You know you can always get a reasonably priced good meal at a "spoons" venue and the free coffee refills are an added bonus. We broke our journey recently and stopped off here late morning, just in time to enjoy a traditional breakfast before they stopped at noon. It was quite busy and it took us a few minutes to find a clean table in a quieter part of the building. Before leaving I visited the Ladies and as usual they were beautifully decorated and very clean, the only drawback was having to go up two flights of stairs. I found downstairs however to be a little neglected and could do with a bit of a spruce up, although this wouldn't stop me from returning if I was in the area again.

Just returned from lunch at The Unicorn. Normally, I really like Wetherspoons in that Hotel, the food is consistently good - apart from this time. I chose the chicken/bacon/avocado salad (£7.05), which was a big mistake. The salad was distinctly 'old', the tomatoes soft and woolly, 4 pieces of dried, tough chicken and several pieces of very over-ripe avocado - so over-ripe it mushed all over the bits of bacon. Very poor indeed. I get the feeling when a mixed salad is served all old stuff is thrown in and disguised with a dressing, and not for the first time have I felt this either. In future I'll stick to food not mixed together! Very disappointing Wetherspoons.

Came to this Wetherspoons in early September at lunchtime with my mother. The menus had just been changed and the staff were struggling to adapt - the only waitress did apologize and said the kitchen did not have all the ingredients for the new menu, so she provided us with a print out, which was so small that neither my mother nor I could read it. A lady at the next table let us borrow a magnifying glass! The waitress failed to clean our table which was covered in grease and debris, until we called her back, and then she gave it a cursory wipe, which made very little difference. In fact the whole place looked as if it needed a good cleanAs with all Wetherspoons you have to go to the bar to order and when I got there things were fraught - there was quite a queue and some of the regular customers were getting angry - the two barstaff looked harassed. The poor woman who served me was obviously frustrated by the situation, but stayed polite: the barman was rude both to her and the customer he was serving to say the least. She explained what was available and took my order - she even carried the drinks over to our table - I think she just wanted to get away for a minute or two!The food was poor - I had chicken strips (the southern- fried coating was very gritty at the ends; the chicken dry) with some sort of sauce, which was congealed, served with chips, which were overcooked. I was not impressed and will not be returning in a hurry.

We were here for a two night stay for the races. Check in was quick and the room was very nice, with tea and coffee, water and biscuits. First night was fine, we slept well. Breakfast in the bar was good as usual. We had a problem with the room not being made up when we returned in the evening. This was soon rectified and we were offered a free breakfast for the morning after as an apology. On the second night our sleep was disturbed about 4am with a thumping sound that went on for about an hour. We would stay here again and the staff are always very friendly.

We went here to eat as a family on a Saturday night, as my brother in law (who lives in Ripon) is a fan. The plae was packed and pretty loud as the Ripon races had been on and it seems as though the serious drinkers had moved on to the Unicorn. That said, we managed to get a table in the front section that was significantly quieter - no problems moving chairs all over to get 6 chairs round our table. My beer was good, but given how quickly they were getting through barrles that not too surprising. What was a surprise was how good the food was, particularly given the prices. So I am not sure I'd recommend it on race day (unless you're a drunk race-goer) but the staff and the food made for a good evening

One of the worst mixed grills everWent for a bite to eat Sunday with 3 other people 2 had the meat pie and mash the other had lamb shank all were reasonably happy.I had the mixed grill wow I wish I hadn't. The chips were the only thing which were not dried up . The Gammon and steak together with the pork were like leather.I could not chew the mushroom.I did not complain at the time because my meal was the last to arrive had I tried for a replacement I would have been Sat on my own eating it ages after everyone had finished. The day before we had a meal at the Wetherspoons in Garforth near Leeds that was spot on

I only booked our stay with friends at the Unicorn because of the excellent reviews on TripAdvisor so thought it only fair to leave our review! I felt very responsible as I was booking for us and friends! We booked for three nights. All the staff were very friendly. We arrived late and the man on the desk was so helpful! We unloaded and then he showed my husband where to park as the car park was quite awkward to find round the back. The reception area is quite dated and I was a little dubious of where I'd brought us to. This didn't last long!! Both our rooms were amazing -very well decorated and comfortable. The bathroom and shower were lovely! Breakfast was just as good, the guys had full English while fruit, yoghurt and porridge were also available! We would thoroughly recommend!!!! Don't forget either that at 9pm EVERY evening the Horn Blower literally blows his horn four times in the city square (outside the hotel). Don't miss this lovely piece of history-it was very interesting!!

How is it that filter coffee in Harrogate, Knaresborough, Otley, and Skipton branches of JDW is £1.10 and Ripon JDW is £1.29

We've been in here so many times over the past few years since moving to Ripon, and seen the worst and the best of food served up during this time, but always a great atmosphere and friendly staff.Hadn't ate in the restaurant for a good few months then this week after dropping our son off for a couple of hours, my hubby and I thought we'd take advantage of that time and pop in for a quick bite to eat and a couple of drinks. Forgetting it was Ripon races day, it was mobbed, hardly any seats/tables available and about 6/7 deep at the bar, so just as we decided against the idea, we passed an empty table near the door, so thought why not! We then discovered this new "APP" ordering service! Wow! Men and gadgets, well, my hubby was well impressed, considering how manic the place was, our drinks were at the table within 3 minutes of ordering them, and food arrived 10 minutes later! Fab service! Really didn't expect that on such a busy evening, and the food to be fair was really good! We just got like a tapas dish of 3 dishes for £10, really decent portions and great choices too! Both really enjoyed it! And hubby loved the fact we had great service and never even had to leave our seats! Perfect!

..... need I say more. Usual mix of beers, ciders, wines, sprits and food at affordable prices. Can highly recommended the pale ales currently available. When we visited the tables were mainly uncleared of glasses and plates etc but it was Friday evening. Service at the bar more than made up for this.

lice in Wonderland theme that runs throughout the Hotel. With a six foot plus unicorn standing by to greet you at the door and the Alice in Wonderland memorabilia everywhere, it's good fun. The staff are very friendly and cannot do enough for you. Brilliant.

You know what you are getting with Wetherspoons (most of the time) and the Unicorn in Ripon is a good one. Usually busy, but service is generally good and food usually done to a reasonably high Wetherspoons standard. Woiuld recommend this place for food, drink or both as a good atmosphere.

2.00pm and we were hungry, wandering about Ripon and wondering where to go to eat. We stopped to take a look at the menu outside The Unicorn, it looked very extensive so we went inside.First impression, it was packed, so it must be good. Only one table available, so we sat down and scanned the menu. Turns out Thursday is also Curry Day, (they claim to be the biggest Curry House) and we love Curry. We both decided on Lamb Roghan Josh. No waitress service, you take your table number, order and pay at the bar. The meal arrived, the Curry in attractive copper bowls, on large plates, and on the plates, boiled rice, a large naan bread, and 2 poppadum's each. The waitress asked if we would like Mango Chutney, which I love. The meal was delicious, the lamb tender, with no fat or gristle. It was also very filling, but we decided to have a dessert too, and chose Knickerbocker Glory, a nice finish to a very satisfying meal.As we pass through Ripon at least once a month, we will definitely be visiting again.

Weatherspoons is always great for having a good range of real ales. Except at the Unicorn! They do have several real ales on the pumps, but they are ALWAYS really similar to each other. You can bet every pump will have a standard, unadventurous, bitter on, at somewhere between 3.8 and 5.2 abv. There is NEVER a stout, never a porter and never anything higher than 5.3 abv. Even during their recent beer festival, none of the interesting beers that were available at other Weatherspoons were available here. Whoever does the ordering needs to be a bit more adventurous. I tend to go down the road 100 yards to "So" they do a great "Thistle" beer that's 5.6% and interesting and a bit different.

A large party of us stopped here for a family wedding. Staff were very helpful. Good range of beers and food at reasonable prices, as is expected from the Wetherspoon chain. Lots of interesting pictures on the walls relating to Alice in Wonderland.

There usual wetherspoons food. Used the app to order all food including breakfast and evening meal. Well impressed. The staff were excellent, so friendly and hard working. The pub is right in the square so could nip out to see the Hornblower at 9. Loved it

Disappointing couple of visits recently, poor ambiance, no one seems to be in charge or responsible. High prices should be supported by top service. Very quiet, beautiful place, shame

We recently stopped at Wetherby Drive Thru and were refused service as we had a dog with us. We all know that Costa have recently changed their policies and allow dogs in most coffee shops. Despite sharing the specific branch amenities stating dogs allowed the staff were totally inflexible. Staff should be fully aware of company policies and Costa should update door posters at the same point in time with such changes to avoid ambiguity. Finally staff should not hide behind the fact they are a franchise, branches branded as Costa have identical look and feel and follow same policies otherwise there are inconsistencies which lead to poor customer service and satisfaction.

Oh. My. GOD. Let me tell you about my night at this pub in Knaresborough because, honey, it was an absolute disaster – and not the fun, reality-TV kind. No, this was the kind of drama that would make a telenovela look like a casual tea party. I sauntered in, thinking I was about to have the night of my life – and with this face, why wouldn’t I? The place was cute enough, I’ll give it that, and I thought, “This might actually be fabulous.” But oh no, darling, the universe had other plans. First off, the online ordering system was down. DOWN. In 2024! I mean, I might as well have been trying to send a telegram! The whole point of going to a pub these days is to sip a cocktail while casually tapping away on your phone, right? But noooo. Instead, I had to walk to the bar like some peasant from the 1800s. The nerve! The bar? PACKED. I could feel the wrinkles forming as I waited, endlessly, for someone to notice me. And when they finally did? They had the audacity to act like it was my fault that their ancient system had crumbled. I swear, I was two seconds away from giving them a live performance of “And I Am Telling You” right there. But wait, there’s a twist: the toilets. GORGEOUS. I mean, I walked in and thought I’d been transported to a high-end spa. Marble, mirrors, the lighting was divine—honestly, it was like a little slice of heaven in the middle of this disaster zone. I spent more time in the bathroom admiring the décor than I did actually eating or drinking. Priorities, darling. So, here’s the tea: if you’re after a stunning restroom experience, by all means, swing by. But if you’re hoping for decent service or a smooth ordering process, save yourself the heartbreak. I left hungry, frustrated, but at least with a fabulous selfie from the loo. 1.5 stars – And that’s only because the toilets SLAYED.
