Disappointing couple of visits recently, poor ambiance, no one seems to be in charge or responsible. High prices should be supported by top service. Very quiet, beautiful place, shame

Went on a busy Saturday evening and ate in the "pub" dining area from the A La Carte menu. We had noticed recently an improvement in the food, however this meal was simply another level up; outstanding beginning to end ( turns out GT has a new head chef from a M* restaurant in Nottingham) We had complimentary artisan bread "2 ways" where one half of a mini loaf is one type of bread and a different bread on the other half both served with three types of home made butter? natural, marmite, and one with the texture of custard which had a hint of cheese. To start I had an outstanding terrine where the content wrapped in pancetta had a light whipped texture, the other half said her gin soaked salmon was outstanding. My main was an Indian influenced Lamb Shank, the meat just fell off the bone the delicate flavours a joy. We also shared a white chocolate and apple desert which was an edible mock apple with a white chocolate muse inside with pieces of apple and ginger served with home made "milk" ice cream. It was really good but I would not fancy one to myself just a bit too sweet for my taste. The front of house team has been updated too; fortunately Sylvio the manager is still present and ensures service matches the now outstanding food. We had a great evening. We know a few people who consider GT expensive; they are wrong. For cooking of this standard you would pay much, much more in York and you will not find it in Harrogate at all. My only (very) minor grip is whilst GT goes to the trouble of putting real tea lights on the table they have no effect it is just too bright, dim the lights please it would help the ambience and some of us look better in half light .

We had a lovely dinner and really enjoyed our evening. This was our first visit to the GT for a few years as we felt the standard had dropped previously. With new chef and (i think) new management, things have definitely been restored. Really enjoyed the gin cured salmon starter, and the fish mains. Someone at a nearby table was having the lamb shank which looked great. Very nice friendly and attentive staff. We will be back.

The Taster Menu was well presented but the flavours were lacking finesse. I’ve have sampled many taster menu’s and have never had a poor one until this. Only two of the courses were enjoyable but the rest were tasteless, the sauces were too sharp, the butter lacked any flavour at all even though it was light and fluffy. We didn’t eat most of it but we’re still charged the full amount. To add insult to injury, when I wrote and complained, I had a polite response but was only offered a complimentary drink. Unfortunately this derisory offer would not draw me back for a second visit as I would rather spend my money at the many other establishments who know how to offer a fine dining experience.

A taste safari , take your taste buds on an adventure with their tasting menu and ensure you try every morsal even if it doesn't sound like your thing . Having had many a tasting menu, I was sceptical about this one, having never been its location is a little confusing as it is not particularly centrally located , but don't judge a book . When I saw the words Thai curry ice cream, I Was intrigued but doubtful, but honestly, the best dish on the menu, a tast explosion . The staff were extremely kind and informative , a true professional in the young lady who we were lucky enough to have as our main waitress , age does not define us. She remembered every detail of every dish and her personal recommendations were a beautiful touch and made us feel very relaxed . This may be one hell of a drive from my home town, but I look forward to dining here again one day.

We have just returned from a night away at GT, and have to say we were very impressed. The room was very clean and comfortable, with tasteful decor and an excellent hot powerful shower. We arrived early and had drinks in the lovely bar before going to our rooms. The gin and tonics were like a work of art with lots of lovely bits included which all added to the enjoyment. We had booked for dinner, and on review of the menu we were looking forward to sitting down. The restaurant was comfortable with a nice space between the tables, service was professional and friendly from start to finish and could not be faulted. However the star of our night away was the food. It was excellent. I had the halibut which was cooked perfectly, it had the most tasteful sauce with it. The other 3 had the steak, hake and lamb shank all delicious and of excellent quality. Side dishes were all seasoned perfectly. The limitation on the number of words available is stopping my rave going on and on. Will we visit again absolutely !!!!

Reviewing a restaurant is difficult at times as food is a very personal thing, I review based upon one simple rule, do I consider it value for money, unfortunately No is the answer here, overall the food was good, but it wasn't good enough ti justify the high end prices. Bill was close to £190 including tip for 2 people with one of the cheaper bottles of wine, couple of beers and a 3 course meal. Bread was dry, had a crisp outside, it reminded me of frozen bread which had been defrosted and heated in an oven, the Cheddar Custard should be placed in a bin and never seen again, everything was wrong, both myself and wife thought it was horrible, the texture was slimy, consistency like runny yoghurt and had little taste, it was a very poor start. Soup tasted good but was very watery, a Butternut Soup should have some thickness to it, it was more like a ramen broth, Octopus was nice but very small portion which turned out of the be theme. Duck was a nice dish and cooked perfectly, Salt Beef was cooked perfectly as well, top marks to the chef who cooked this, really nice quality and taste with good texture, but it was tiny, the dish was also luke warm at best, it simply was not hot enough and by the time I had finished it was stone cold. Sides were really good, Triple cooked chips great, so was the broccoli but the star of the whole meal was the Cabbage, best cabbage I have ever eaten. I paid £45.50 for Steak, Chips and Cabbage, with a tiny bit of steak, it simple was not worth the money. Worst was to come, Cheese Board, I was going to send it back but my wife told me off, come on guys, a piece of cheese the size of my thumb and about 2mm thick is disgraceful, £15 for 5 tiny bits of cheese, yes I know this also covers the bought in biscuits etc., but this was beyond mean, and celery sliced to 1mm diameter, really !I must say do not get the cheese board, the cheese wasn't that good. I have to say the staff were brilliant, friendly, warm, always on hard, faultless. Overall we did mostly enjoy the food, and if the bill had been around £120 we would have been happy, but the portions are too small, the prices too high and the quality just doesn't justify the cost, I will not be going back.

We enjoyed at short stay at this pub/restaurant/hotel. The welcome was great and the rooms very nice and clean with all the amenities you might need. The food was excellent and very tasty with a good selection - my steak was wonderful. However the steak was £36 and so it is clear these are not pub prices. There are other choices that are more reasonable but if you are being careful this might not be the place. Service was a bit haphazard but i think they were busy so that is understandable.

Ventured further afield to The General Tarleton at Ferensby and tried their 7 course Tasting menu. Varun Khan is the new Head Chef who clearly demonstrates immense talent and creativity both in the kitchen as well as training the waiting staff whose knowledge of the food was second to none. The Taste of Yorkshire menu was absolutely delicious, had some lovely surprises with flavour combinations such as the Thai Curry icecream, which was awesome. The setting was also lovely, which rounded off a great evening.

A lovely bar menu meal followed. Super nights sleep and fabulous breakfast followed. We enjoyed every aspect of our time at the GT and intend to return later in the year. Well done everyone.

Stayed here in this pub with rooms for one night. Greeted by a very helpful woman and shown all. Room very nice and comfortable with good bed and lovely bathroom. Fresh milk provided for tea and a helpful honestly bar. Booked dinner and at dinner was told bar menu was not available by a very inexperienced member of staff. Could not say why. Another very helpful waiter sorted all out. The pub had few people in it. Food was average and not the best quality ingredients. Certainly not gastro pub quality. Then there was a power cut. The so called general manager had no idea how to sort all out. No offer of torches, candles etc health and safety measures were zero etc. we returned to our rooms and were in the dark all night. Told by so called manager we could leave free at charge at 930 pm !! Of no help as we were travelling home the next day. Breakfast poor quality Ingredient's again. This establishment is let down by poor staff bar one , people who are clearly inexperienced, and a general manager who is rude and arrogant. After much deliberation we did get a discount but we will not return. Could be very nice if managed and led well

Met up with friends yesteray for Sunday lunch. The location is good just a few miles from the A1 - ideal for us as equidistant between us and the friends we were meeting.Service was good and it was nice not to be hurried out. Restaurants where they have rebooked the table and are looking to get rid of you after your alloted hour are really annoying. We were there for over three hours and completely unpressured.Foor also was superb - the scallop starter particulalry so. The main was good - plenty of roast meat and a good selection of vegetables, well cooked. Perhaps a few too many sultanas and not enough apple in the apple and sultana crumble but that is nit picking. Not the cheapest location for Sunday lunch and (having been caught out recently by other restaurants) I did check the bill - two mysterious unordered (and unserved) Americano's had appeared on the bill - deducted immediately with a cursory apology. Normally, I don't check the bill as long as it is in the right ball park but I have found recently, in a number of restaurants, mystery extra glasses of wine, coffees, desserts and so on appearing on the bills. I am sure it is very easy for items to be charged to the wrong tables so I strongly reccomend checking the bill.

I first visited GT in the 80s. It was good then and it's great now. The cooking is the star: delicious, beautifully presented and not over-fussy. For our party of six we really enjoyed the "Ad Hoc" starter (tiny scotch egg, boudin noir, lovely soft belly pork) and the "Money Bags" (folio pastry parcels filled with rich seafood in lobster sauce). Money Bags have been on the menu as long as I can remember and they are always excellent. Everyone in the party enjoyed their main course. Great presentation, portion size and accurate cooking - for example halibut cooked perfectly, crispy skins and juicy, flaky flesh. The wine list is reasonably priced with great balance between old faithfuls and new surprises. The service was first rate: friendly (even funny!), attentive and knowledgable. We visited on a cold, wet Thursday night and this might explain why the restaurant was fairly quiet. As if it could not get better, the Timothy Taylors Landlord was perfect. Value for money was very good for cooking, ambience and service of this standard. Looking forward to our next visit

Past this place many times and always said we would try it after reading some of it’s reviews. Today we booked a table and went for dinner. All staff were very friendly and professional. Ordered lunch, my wife ordered the Halibut and I ordered the roast beef Sunday lunch. The meals looked lovely when they arrived. I put on my veg etc and began to eat. Immediately realising that the plate and the beef were cold. Not warm, cold. I spoke to the waiter and sent the full plate back to the kitchen. After around 10 minutes when my wife had finished her meal a plate of food was brought back to me. It was hot this time with a very small amount of veg on it. No cauliflower cheese or fresh veg brough though. This was all on my original plate. I spent the first five minutes or so cutting the fat and gristle from the beef before eating. Not good at all. The waiter originally said he would speak to me regarding the meal but never did. When we finished and went to pay he was the one who took our money. Not even a mention of how the food was or if we had enjoyed it. To say we were disappointed was an understatement. This is not a cheap restaurant. Unfortunately the price does not reflect the quality of the food served.

To find the quality of dining offered by the General Tarleton, in the middle of the Yorkshire countryside, was one of the highlights of two weeks of a very successful trip. The service was good with efficient and friendly staff making sure that everything from ordering through to tea and coffee ran smoothly without being rushed. The warm and cosy lounge was a great venue to take pre- and post-dinner drinks. The restaurant offered a set menu and a wider choice of dishes. We explored both and were not disappointed by any of the courses on any of our three nights. The portions are generous, well cooked and well presented. The wine list is well thought through with something for all budgets and tastes. I certainly wouldn't hesitate to go back.

Me and my wife came to eat here because we’d heard nothing but good things about it and we were not disappointed. Everything from the food, the service and even the little almond cakes with coffees were just perfect!

WE stayed here for a big family celebration. The food was totally delicious from the canapes before the meal through fabulous starter, equally good main course and a great variety of rhubarb based puddings. The service was immaculate. A wonderful evening for all ages

Have been coming to the general tarlton for many years and it has been a bit hit and miss! Over the past 6 months i have been about 6 times and every time was amazing. Tender meats tasty vegetables and amazing sauces. I would fully recommend this restaurant and travel around 50miles for dinner here.

Visited with extended family for Sunday lunch. Starters good. One main course failed to materialise with rest of meals. The beef was so rare it was bloody. This meal was returned and had to be replaced. Roast potatoes were hard. The fish dishes looked the best option. Children's menu was good. However, our complaints were dealt with promptly and when the bill arrived two main courses and the service charge had been deducted automatically. The service was good and the staff pleasant. All things considered I doubt if we would chose to eat there again

Visited the GT restaurant whilst staying at the hotel. The restaurant is run by top chef, John Topham. Located in a very small village in the Yorkshire dales the restaurant is decorated to a very high standard. There is a lovely large cocktail area for pre-dinner drinks before being shown to you table. You are spoilt for choice from the exciting menu but I would definitely recommend the 'Little Money Bags in Lobster Bisque' to start.

I took my visiting family here as a special occasion. This place is a tried and tested favourite. My family loved it and were really impressed by the choices and seasonal menu. The lamb in particular was very good. We could not resist the desserts which were all excellent and as always really beautifully presented.

Spent Saturday night at The GT after a day at Ripon Races. Our room was a delight with comfortable beds and every need catered for, even full size Molton Brown bath products ! Our evening meal was superb, from the first course right through to our dessert which we were determined not to have but couldn’t risist. The staff were excellent, friendly, efficient and very professional. We couldn’t find anything negative to say about the whole experience. In fact before we left we booked to go back next month as I really need to try the little fishy moneybag starter ! Total triumph !

We picked this place to stay and eat from the recommendation of the Good Food Guide and were not disappointed. All round professionally run gastro pub. The staff were all young and delightful and happy to help in any way they could. The food at both dinner and breakfast was very satisfying - big bold flavours with portion sizes to match. The fried duck egg starter was beautifully presented and the roast spring chicken was swooned over. The suckling pig and excellent black pudding, while tasty was however strangely paired with a very rich and mustardy remoulade salad which didn’t seem to suit it. Breakfast dishes from the hot a la carte were were a hit with excellent eggs royals and benedict, the ‘hipster’ avocado on sourdough toast, plus of course the full Yorshire - pig perfection! The rooms were comfortable with many ‘little extras’, although it might be time for a refurbishment programme soon. One of the best things was being able to open the windows properly and let in the quiet country air without the deafening sound of traffic - heavenly!

Went with a group of girls to celebrate a friend’s birthday. The staff could not have been more friendly and accommodating. One of the group has some food intolerances so, having told the restaurant on booking, they presented her with a list of menu items she could choose from. So helpful. Food was excellent. We all enjoyed our starters and main courses but were sadly too full for desserts.

This is our second visit to the General Tarleton and yet again the food impressed. While waiting for the appetizers we had a bowl of home made crisps with garlic, very very moorish. I started with an appetizer called "Ad Hoc" a wonderful mix of crispy belly pork, a scotch egg, black pudding served on a pea puree STUNNING. My wife had the chicken liver parfait with toasted brioche, again excellent. Mains were Seafood thermidor served with dressed leaves and an extra portion of triple cooked chips, great for mopping up the cheesy sauce. My wife had Lamb confit with mixed veg, lets just say there was nothing left on our plates. We were very good and resisted the sweets.

We visited the General Tarleton in October during their Seafood Festival and the food was excellent! The Popcorn King Prawns and Seafood 'Moneybags' were delicious and I tried lobster for the first time, which did not disappoint! The staff always take great care and are very accommodating with food allergies, suggesting alternative dishes if necessary. I wouldn't hesitate to book a meal here!

Our family group - four adults, a three-year old and a baby of 15 months - enjoyed the good-value New Year's Day menu, which was varied and well-presented. We ate in the conservatory area and had our (excellent) coffee in the adjacent comfortable lounge. The ' little money bags' seafood starters were particularly appreciated, as well as the pear and celeriac soup and the smooth chicken liver pate. The main courses were excellent - the accompanying lovely mashed potato and cauliflower cheese merit a mention. The two small children with us were treated very well. All-in-all, a very good start to 2019.

I am now losing faith in Wetherspoons as the value for money place to eat, we came here last Wednesday, three adults and two children for our tea time treat as a family but I am sorry to say that, and speaking personally for my meal alone, which was the small mixed grill, the peas were cold, the chips were warm and one of the pieces of meat in the mixed grill which I believe was supposed to be beef was also cold and almost impossible to chew. Time was when we never had a bad word to say about this chain of pub eateries but since Covid, the only road they are travelling is downwards. Won't be rushing back.

We recently stopped at Wetherby Drive Thru and were refused service as we had a dog with us. We all know that Costa have recently changed their policies and allow dogs in most coffee shops. Despite sharing the specific branch amenities stating dogs allowed the staff were totally inflexible. Staff should be fully aware of company policies and Costa should update door posters at the same point in time with such changes to avoid ambiguity. Finally staff should not hide behind the fact they are a franchise, branches branded as Costa have identical look and feel and follow same policies otherwise there are inconsistencies which lead to poor customer service and satisfaction.

Oh. My. GOD. Let me tell you about my night at this pub in Knaresborough because, honey, it was an absolute disaster – and not the fun, reality-TV kind. No, this was the kind of drama that would make a telenovela look like a casual tea party. I sauntered in, thinking I was about to have the night of my life – and with this face, why wouldn’t I? The place was cute enough, I’ll give it that, and I thought, “This might actually be fabulous.” But oh no, darling, the universe had other plans. First off, the online ordering system was down. DOWN. In 2024! I mean, I might as well have been trying to send a telegram! The whole point of going to a pub these days is to sip a cocktail while casually tapping away on your phone, right? But noooo. Instead, I had to walk to the bar like some peasant from the 1800s. The nerve! The bar? PACKED. I could feel the wrinkles forming as I waited, endlessly, for someone to notice me. And when they finally did? They had the audacity to act like it was my fault that their ancient system had crumbled. I swear, I was two seconds away from giving them a live performance of “And I Am Telling You” right there. But wait, there’s a twist: the toilets. GORGEOUS. I mean, I walked in and thought I’d been transported to a high-end spa. Marble, mirrors, the lighting was divine—honestly, it was like a little slice of heaven in the middle of this disaster zone. I spent more time in the bathroom admiring the décor than I did actually eating or drinking. Priorities, darling. So, here’s the tea: if you’re after a stunning restroom experience, by all means, swing by. But if you’re hoping for decent service or a smooth ordering process, save yourself the heartbreak. I left hungry, frustrated, but at least with a fabulous selfie from the loo. 1.5 stars – And that’s only because the toilets SLAYED.
