all 3 of us had starters and main meals that were served promptly. good portion sizes, steak and fish cooked perfectly and pizza was excellent quality, highly recommended.

My first visit for a couple of years. Pizzas are new here, and we have just had the best pizzas in a long, long time. Highly recommended. Come and try them out. Great beers too 👍🏻👍🏻

Stayed in the onsite accomodation. The holiday let was large, clean and spacious. It had everything you needed and the owner even put in a loaf of bread, teas and coffees, biscuits and milk. There were laundry facilities available, however, we didn't need to use them, but it's nice they are there. WiFi was great considering there is very limited signal in the area. Bed was comfy for me, but not the husband (you can't please everyone!) the sheets and towels smelt so clean and fresh, my only criticism is the size of the towels, as they are on the small side if you are a larger person, however, this didn't effect our stay and would definitely stay again. Would recommend.

Beautifully cooked Sunday Lunch with all fresh vegetables and succulent roast beef, served with proper roast potatoes, home made Yorkshire puddings jug of gravy and separate serving of cauliflower cheese. Finished off with a home made syrup sponge and custard bringing memories of school puddings ! Other items are available on the menu but this is what we had. There is a good stocked bar and a nice selection of wine. The restaurant is clean bright and airy with comfortable seating. A special thanks to Leanne for looking after us but not forgetting the Boss, Gary Millington who has done a wonderful job and working so hard to make this an award winning location. We will be back. Booking is advisable and can be done on line.

Visited this beautiful pub for the first time in years, I was pleasantly surprised to see how modern it was and how beautifully it had been decorated.The atmosphere was lovely, calm and peaceful and not too overcrowded. The menu was simplictic and classic and the food was absolutely delicious. The service was wonderful and the lady and gentlemen who served us were so friendly and polite. We will definitely be returning for another meal soon. Wonderful dining experience

Dinner on a Friday evening 7pm, only one girl behind the bar and taking orders and one girl who had clearly just started bringing the meals out. We ordered 2 starters, only one arrived 15 minutes later after prompting the other came followed quickly by our mains. The meals were very good but our only gripe was the service, there should have been someone front of house I felt sorry for the girl who was in charge, she was run off her feet,. The manager/ owner should realise as they have a caravan site as well that Friday/ Saturday night are not the nights to leave 2 staff on.

Had a fabulous Sunday lunch, the husband had the roast dinner which was beautifully presented, and tasted lovely he had the Belly pork which was cooked to perfection. I had the glutton free Fish and chips which again was beautifully presented ,The service was great the gentleman serving was very polite and was quick to take our order and then bring us our drinks we both decided to have desserts I had warm chocolate fudge cake with fruit and ice cream which was delicious my husband had the sticky toffee pudding ,we really enjoyed our experience of dining here and will be defiantly be returning soon .Well done to the chef and all the staff.

Excellent value for money We had the absolute pleasure of staying in the Chester apartment which is pet friendly from 28/2 - 1/3 2024 we could not fault a thing about the whole place the apartment is beautifully furnished all the home comforts you need tea coffee milk sugar bread butter jam biscuits all provided in a welcome pack . The pub on site is very friendly and everywhere is extremely well cared for .Elesmere is a five min drive away while Wrexham is 20 min s away or a £16 taxi ride we had the best few days and we will definitely be back excellent value for money.

We stayed for 2 nights in the cottage next to the pub, myself and my wife were in The Ascot. The accommodation was much more than expected. Absolutely stunning inside and perfect...we couldn't recommend it any higher and will definitely return. We had an evening meal which was excellent, with a few beers to follow. We visited today as we were in the area and wanted to try somewhere different. We called ahead and booked a table, no issues. On arrival the place looks very nice, there was a table in already and another couple at the bar being served drinks. We were seated by a young girl, again no issues. Then came the service. The poor lady (Mandy I think) who seemed to be in charge at the time, was behind the bar and informed me she normally works in the kitchen, but someone hadn't shown up for the bar and she was waiting on another member of staff to turn up, so it was a bit manic. She said they had only recently reopened and the owner was away for the weekend, leaving them a bit short staffed. A few tables had walked in at once and it was obviously very stressful. She was unsure of the till system and clearly not comfortable behind the bar, but you could really see that she was trying her best. She was assisted by 2 other staff members, both very young and unfortunately inexperienced. The young lad who came to serve the bar had very little idea of how to even pull a decent pint, so much so that customers were explaining to him what to do! There was a table of holiday guests in the pub who seemed like they may be regulars, they were assisting him with their drinks knowledge and advising the young staff on how to use the till!! We ordered food (2 adults roast dinners and 2 kids). The cauliflower cheese, roasties and the gravy were very tasty but the veg was luke warm and the beef was a bit fatty and chewy. Also, we didn't realise until we paid, but the kids roast dinner was £11.95!! Now, don't get me wrong, they were a good size, but I was really shocked at the price and I honestly think that's far too expensive, especially for my 4 year old who rarely finishes a meal. All in all, we left a little deflated at the experience considering the size of the bill. I hope it's just teething problems, because I do think it has the potential to be a great little pub, but they seriously need to get more experienced staff in if they are going to make it work. Other than Mandy, who was an absolute star! Without her the place would be falling apart.

Pretty terrible. I quote my boyfriend "Please make me never go back." Food was poor, burnt lasagne, burnt toast. Service was okay, but the restaurant full of very rowdy people.

Booked for 1.30 well in advance. Ordered carvery and waited 45 mins to be called up. No roast potatoes, no parsnips, no cauliflower cheese, only burned broccoli, hard carrots and new pots. Only meat remaining was gammon and pork (beef all gone with no refill!). Not the best really… very disappointed ☹️ Our waitress was lovely… felt very sorry for her 😍

We had just arrived at our holiday destination about a mile down the road and decided to come here for lunch. It was about 3pm when we arrived, place was empty but we had a very nice greeting from the barmaid. We all ordered a sandwich and a portion of chips, it was all freshly made and very tasty, would definitely recommend.

The service was excellent but 2 of us asked for medium rare steak and the owner even asked how rare but both were too well done. Disappointing as the place was recommended. We did mention it but no offer of any discount, just "I'll tell the chef off"

We booked here for carvery (3) of us ,upon arrival drinks came when ordered,then we asked to go up for food ,minimal choice of veg,cauliflower cheese not enough sauce and cauliflower hard as was the broccoli, it was fit for rabbits ,also if u do roast potatoes do your own and not aunt Bessie's ....tried will not be returning for carvery ,but good luck in th future 👍

The pub restaurant has just been taken over... The food is excellent... We're staying locally and have been 3 times this week... Outstandingly good Sunday Roast. Everything was absolutely spot on - all beautifully prepared, cooked and served. We had 3 courses each and thoroughly enjoyed all of it. Good portions including an extra serving of gravy without having to ask for it. Roast potatoes to die for ! Very good value for money. Helpful and welcoming staff. We will most definitely return again. Highly recommended !

I booked a table for eight at pretty short notice. Then I was held up on the way and arrived nearly half an hour late. Despite this, we were welcomed warmly. Eight different meals arrived within moments of each other, all beautifully cooked and presented, including one that had to be specially prepared as one of my party is on a very restricted diet. Service was prompt and helpful. The young lady behind the bar dealt competently and calmly with a spilt drink. I was very impressed with everything here: the food, the service and the decor which was light and pleasant. Even the background music, which I usually find irritating, was quiet and unobtrusive. I'll definitely be back. Oh, and the bill at the end of the evening was very reasonable, too.

This pub is lovely and has a warm cosy feel. We had a Sunday roast which I couldn't fault. I had Turkey with all the trimmings and my mum had the beef, both excellent! Great efficient service from staff members. I will definitely be returning for more lovely food!

What a great little pub. We stayed at the caravan park next door and popped in to have food on the Saturday night. Very friend and helpful staff from the moment we got there. We sat pin a nice beer garden and ordered 2 crispy beef starters, 3 curries and a sea bass. All were absolutely delicious. Just had a great weekend at the trotting mare. Had one of the holiday let’s which was great. The cottage was spotless and specked to a very high standard. The cottage had everything you could possibly need and included a welcome basket on arrival which was a very nice touch. Had a bar-b-que in the pub on the Friday night which was great. Food and staff were great. Great base for exploring Llangollen and nearby towns. Will return.

Just been for an average meal, tried to use our Meerkat meals only for it not to be honoured. Ordered 3 meals, two of them set price 3 courses. Went to pay and told set menu not included, no mention of this on their menus or on their Meerkat meals entry RIP OFF!!

It must have 20 years ago I last visited here,what a change.Inside all new interior and furnishings,bright and airy and the chairs are big and comfortable.Lovely decor and fixings.It was very quiet on the Sunday afternoon we arrived only another couple in dining and they moaned about the small portion of meat on the Sunday Roast menu ! a bit off putting,however ...when our arrived my wife had the roast with 2 meats,beautifully cooked and plenty for one person.I had the cod and chips and it was freshly cooked and just perfect.So the person moaning could obviously eat a bucket more than a sow? but I did hear him apologize at the end of his meal.Great selection of beers and nothing overpriced.There is also an award winning caravan park at the rear of the pub.I will definitely go back and next time take the family.I think we just picked a quiet period to go but would recommend if you are in the area.

We have been to the Trotting Mare for lunch today, this is my third visit.The food was delicious, and was lovely and hot, but my review is mostly about our lovely waitress.She coped on her own, not only with our table of 14, but with another table in the next room with about the same number, and the bar. She was pleasant, friendly and couldn't do enough for us. Owners, please take note, staff like this are like hens teeth, especially when out in the country like you are, she is a big part of your success.

This pub has been completely renovated and now has a relaxing interior with sage green beams and grey walls. The menu offers good choice for sandwiches at lunchtime and main meals. Food is served all day and dogs are also welcomed. Our food was excellent ,the fish finger sandwich is delicious. We are looking forward to returning.

The Trotting Mare went through a bad patch a couple of years ago, but I have been twice in the last six months and the change is incredible. Today, my sister and I went for lunch, we were looked after extremely well by John, who was attentive but not pushy in anyway. We usually only have two courses but as each course,came we just wanted more!!!!. This eatery is definitely back on the map, please call as I know you will not be disappointed.

Highly recommended, incredible food and lovely staff. Bonus if you have dogs too as it is dog friendly. We ordered Sunday roasts and there wasn’t a bad word to say, lovely atmosphere and chilled music on in here. Great if you want food but also if you just want a drink with your family/friends. After a successful party for 17 at Christmas time with no complaints, we decided to try out the Valentine menu.From the pan-seared scallops to the Rib-eye steak, everything was perfectly cooked and hot. Desserts did'nt disappoint either and the service was attentive but unintrusive. This new-look restaurant deserves to be a regular favourite.

Driven past this pubmany times on the way to Ellesmere, but today decided to stop for lunch. We were very impressed with the decor and the greeting we received. A very good small menu (meaning usually that the chef cooks fresh) the food was delicious. My husband and friend had the meat and mushroom pie, which they said was amazing. My friend had the seafood pasta which was packed with fish and prawns. I, modestly had the small portion of battered fish and twice cooked chips. Although a small portion, it was more than enough for me. The fush was gorgeous, beautifully cooked and the batter sublime. WE WILL NOT DRIVE PAST AGAIN.This will be a regular lunch stop.

What can I say. Tip top. Greeted with a big smile by the bar manager. Seated quickly and efficiently. Lovely atmosphere in a nice light and airy room which was tasteful and modern. A lovely refurb. Orders given and meals arrived very quickly. We both ordered ribeye steak. It was absolutely perfect. I can be critical as I love cooking but this meal was faultless. It was cooked to perfection, medium rare melted in your mouth. Thanks chef. A big thumbs up to all the staff. Brilliant.

Met up with family at this convenient venue. Hadn't been before but warm greeting while we awaited the arrival of others. Food good and the battered chicken strips went down well with the children.

Had a very pleasant 3 night stay at Trotting Mare. Gary, the owner, was very helpful and showed us to our pitch and gave us the guide to the park. The facilities were spot on with spotless toilets and showers. The pub on site has been recently refurbished to a high standard and was very welcoming with Gary and the bar staff being very cordial. The site is very well maintained but some might find the pitches small compared to some sites. The site is well positioned for walkers and we had a pleasant walk around Colemere.lake Would return but would request a pitch further away from road.

A great makeover but the food is average with too much emphasis on the deep fat fryer. Fish is good unbattered and maybe something other than chips and peas. The staff are good and obliging.

Having booked to stay on the adjacent caravan site, we were looking forward to visiting the refurbished pub. Unfortunately although it had reopened a couple of days previously, the only beer available was a small stock of bottled beer. Not what was expected of the 'country pub' in our brochure. The decor although clean pleasant and contemporary was not condusive to visiting just for a drink. The menu was quite limited and plain. We did eat there later in the week, still no beer, food was a bit delayed. Felt that the staff were still trying to find their way around the menu, kitchen etc. Having looked at previous reviews we were a little disappointed with the menu. Shame as we were so looking forward to not having to venture too far on an evening. Beer was installed on our last evening, but looked like the pub was full of invitation holders so we went elsewhere to eat.

Just had the best lamb henry with apple and red cabbage and minted gravy. Absolutely delicious. Followed by amazing homemade baileys cheescake. One of the best meals i have ever had . We stayed on the Trotting Mare caravan site behind the Trotting Mare pub. This is a great little hidden gem. We tried most of the menu and everything was superb freshly made and great value. I certainly would recommend trying the home made items.

What can l say but what a little gem of a pub Barry and Pat are super host's and shaun is just a great chef they made us feel so welcome from the very first moment we walked in and the food is fabulous we tried the basket meals which took us back in time also the steaks and the afternoon two course meals and puddings and good old home cooked chips all the food was excellent. If you are in the area you must visit this pub would just like to say sorry we did not come in today as we decided to go home early because of the weather but thank you for making our holiday stay so much better regards Sue and Chris Yorkshire x

Metimos en un domingo ayer y ambos tuvimos cerdo asado. Realmente encantadora, comida deliciosa, pero no pude comer todo. Tuvimos una agradable charla con la pareja corriendo el comedor y realmente sorprendido de que éramos las únicas personas allí. Estaba lleno cada vez que llegaba antes, pero luego me di cuenta de que era el primer fin de semana de las vacaciones escolares, así que esto sólo haya descendido. Estábamos en una zona de caravanas justo abajo de la calle, así que era bastante práctico para nosotros. Recomendaría este lugar a cualquiera.

La comida en el Hipódromo es fabulosa. Mare El personal es muy amable me pidió un sobresaliente bistec y mi mujer pidió lubina. Las comidas eran preciosas y el chef incluso salió para comprobar que los disfrutamos. Nos alojamos en el parque de caravanas y sin duda volvería a comer en el pub. Si tuviera que dar alguna crítica constructiva sería que el pub le hace falta un poco de ambiente. Es un lugar muy pequeño, y aunque había un poco de música de fondo quizás haría una diferencia. Dicho esto volveríamos por la comida.

My favourite local place to eat. Lovely atmosphere, staff most friendly and obliging. good choice on menu for everyone. Sunday roasts are to die for, pity I can only manage a small one! Prices are comparable. A must to visit.

Agradable tener auténtica comida en un pub, no ponerla en el insípido cosas. El personal era encantador y me gustó el toque de vasos de la nevera y un vaso de hielo cuando que se caliente. Sin duda recomendaría comer aquí.

Harto de tener que elegir la cadena que vende comidas habituales propiedad pubs y pollo ding a clientes como caseras mi esposa y yo decidimos ir a la trotamundos mare ubicados después de leer las críticas en tripadvisor.

Tenía un bistec entre semana y el domingo asados durante nuestra estadía en el sitio y me puedo quejar de nada. Generosas porciones, cada cosa muy bien preparadas y bien de precio. No dudaría en recomendar ☺ ️ (la tarta de queso con miel y nueces es celestial).

Good value for money. We had the meal in a basket meals £5.95 chicken and chips, battered sausage and chips and pork schnitzel with chips really nice. Staff friendly good atmosphere well worth a try. Children also welcome

We went last night (Friday) with friends who had recommended it, as we had booked we were shown to the table almost immediately.Nice area by the bar to chill if you wanted a drink before going to the table.The pub is dog friendly which is a plus, we hadn't ours with us but is something we will bear in mind for next time.Tables are well set out with plenty of pace so no sense of overcrowding.We all had starters soup With two bread rolls and plenty of butter for my wife,pate for my friends and prawn cocktail for me, my only mistake was I should have skipped lunch as I had to leave most of my salad.Starters ranged from £3.75 to 4.75 and were excellent.Mains 2 chose steak and ale pie (proper pie with case) one had curry and I had lamb shank (cooked for 5 hours with mash and root vegetables exceptional gravy and probably the best lamb shank I've ever had well done chef!!.I kept the bone for our dogs and the chef provided another large bone for our Rottweiler she was still enjoying it today.Great food and value for money ( Rib eye 10 oz for £13.50 there are many places charge £18.50 for 8 oz.)Will we going again definitely but I shall have to fast for a few days first!! Well done to all concerned

Went for lunch with friends food was all very nice and tasty but room did not have much appeal have always wanted to visit here but sadly it wasn't what we thought expected more atmosphere.

We visited the Trotting Mare for dinner, last time we were here is some years ago and its much smaller now than we recalled.Hosts are very nice and menu is not to large. Prices are good too. Portions sizes are generous. Steak Pie is amazing (pastry excellent) as was the Steak Burger. The rump steak meal was good too as was the sea bass.Brownies for desert were good (nice sauce), fruit pie was disappointing poor pastry (Why not have individual pies like the steak pie?)Only a handful of beers and lagers on offer, although a nice pint.Dining room is shared with bar area (there are very reasonable basket meals too). The only problem is if one the noisy locals comes in for a pint and a chat, as we experienced, it kind of fills the place as its a bit small which is unavoidable. Lunch menu also looks good and 2 courses for £7.50 is a great price.We will return and not leave it as long next time.
